The House of Baliol


This family descended from the Baliols of Normandy and established themselves in England after the Norman Conquest in 1066. They were the senior representatives of the claim to the Scottish throne after the extinction of the Dunkeld dynasty in 1286

One Renard de Bailleul, Sheriff of Shropshire, fl 1086,accompanied William the Conqueror in 1066; m.Amiera de Montgomery, niece of Roger II de Montgomery, Earl of Shropshire

Another branch was founded by Renard’s possible brother Guy/Guido de Bailleul, fl 1066-93, 1st Baron of Bywell, in Northumberland; He had issue:
