1 And now Jeroboam’s son Abia fell sick. 2 Whereupon Jeroboam said to his wife, Here is a journey needs to be made; but first disguise thyself, so that none may know thou art the wife of Jeroboam. It is to Silo thou must go, where Ahias lives, the prophet who foretold that I should be king of this realm; 3 to him betake thyself, bearing ten loaves with thee, and some pastry, and a pot of honey; from him thou wilt learn what is to become of the boy. 4 So Jeroboam’s wife did his bidding; to Silo she made her way, and found Ahias’ house. Ahias had no sight left now, so dim were his eyes grown with old age; 5 but the Lord made it known to him that Jeroboam’s wife was coming to ask him about her son, that had fallen sick, and told him what words he must use to her. She, as she entered, would have given herself out to be other than she was; 6 but Ahias, as soon as he heard the fall of her feet on the threshold, cried out, Come in, wife of Jeroboam; why dost thou feign thyself to be another? I am charged with bitter tidings for thee.

1 In tempore illo ægrotavit Abia filius Jeroboam. 2 Dixitque Jeroboam uxori suæ: Surge, et commuta habitum, ne cognoscaris quod sis uxor Jeroboam, et vade in Silo, ubi est Ahias propheta, qui locutus est mihi quod regnaturus essem super populum hunc. 3 Tolle quoque in manu tua decem panes, et crustulam, et vas mellis, et vade ad illum: ipse enim indicabit tibi quid eventurum sit puero huic. 4 Fecit ut dixerat, uxor Jeroboam: et consurgens abiit in Silo, et venit in domum Ahiæ: at ille non poterat videre, quia caligaverant oculi ejus præ senectute. 5 Dixit autem Dominus ad Ahiam: Ecce uxor Jeroboam ingreditur ut consulat te super filio suo qui ægrotat: hæc et hæc loqueris ei. Cum ergo illa intraret, et dissimularet se esse quæ erat, 6 audivit Ahias sonitum pedum ejus introëuntis per ostium, et ait: Ingredere, uxor Jeroboam: quare aliam te esse simulas? ego autem missus sum ad te durus nuntius.

7 Go and give Jeroboam this message from the Lord God of Israel: Was it for this I chose thee out among the common folk, and gave thee command of my people Israel, 8 tearing David’s kingdom asunder to enthrone thee? My servant David was not such a man as thou art. He kept my commandments, obeying me with all his heart, and doing my will. 9 And thou? Thou hast done more amiss than any who went before thee, making thyself molten images of alien gods; me thou hast defied, me thou hast rejected. 10 And I, in return, mean to bring ruin on all Jeroboam’s race, smiting every man that belongs to it, bondman or free man, throughout all Israel;[1] I mean to sweep away the last remnants of his race, like the dung that must be swept away till all is clean. 11 Die they in the city, they shall be food for the dogs; die they in the open country, they shall be food for all the birds of heaven; it is the Lord’s decree. 12 Up, then, betake thyself home, and as thy feet cross the threshold of the city, thy son will die. 13 Lament and burial he shall have from the people of Israel; in him alone, of all Jeroboam’s race, some loyalty to the God of Israel is found, and he alone, of all Jeroboam’s race, shall be carried to the grave. 14 This day, even as I speak, the Lord has marked out for the throne of Israel one who shall destroy the race of Jeroboam. 15 And as for Israel itself, it shall tremble under the hand of the Lord God, as a reed trembles in the water; he will root them out from the fair land which he gave to their fathers, and scatter them beyond the Great River, men that defied the Lord with forest-shrines of their own fashioning. 16 And if the Lord abandons Israel thus, it is for the guilt of Jeroboam, that sinned, and taught Israel to sin.

7 Vade, et dic Jeroboam: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus Israël: Quia exaltavi te de medio populi, et dedi te ducem super populum meum Israël, 8 et scidi regnum domus David, et dedi illud tibi, et non fuisti sicut servus meus David, qui custodivit mandata mea, et secutus est me in toto corde suo, faciens quod placitum esset in conspectu meo: 9 sed operatus es mala super omnes qui fuerunt ante te, et fecisti tibi deos alienos et conflatiles, ut me ad iracundiam provocares, me autem projecisti post corpus tuum: 10 idcirco ecce ego inducam mala super domum Jeroboam, et percutiam de Jeroboam mingentem ad parietem, et clausum, et novissimum in Israël: et mundabo reliquias domus Jeroboam, sicut mundari solet fimus usque ad purum. 11 Qui mortui fuerint de Jeroboam in civitate, comedent eos canes: qui autem mortui fuerint in agro, vorabunt eos aves cæli: quia Dominus locutus est. 12 Tu igitur surge, et vade in domum tuam: et in ipso introitu pedum tuorum in urbem, morietur puer, 13 et planget eum omnis Israël, et sepeliet: iste enim solus inferetur de Jeroboam in sepulchrum, quia inventus est super eo sermo bonus a Domino Deo Israël in domo Jeroboam. 14 Constituet autem sibi Dominus regem super Israël, qui percutiet domum Jeroboam in hac die, et in hoc tempore: 15 et percutiet Dominus Deus Israël, sicut moveri solet arundo in aqua: et evellet Israël de terra bona hac, quam dedit patribus eorum, et ventilabit eos trans flumen: quia fecerunt sibi lucos, ut irritarent Dominum. 16 Et tradet Dominus Israël propter peccata Jeroboam, qui peccavit, et peccare fecit Israël.

17 So Jeroboam’s wife left him, and made her way back to Thersa, where her feet no sooner crossed the threshold than her son died. 18 Burial he had, and all Israel mourned for him, as the prophet Ahias had promised in the Lord’s name. 19 What else Jeroboam did, how he fought and how he reigned, is to be found written in the Annals of the kings of Israel. 20 When his reign had lasted twenty-two years, he was laid to rest with his fathers, and the throne passed to his son Nadab.

Et planxit eum omnis Israël juxta sermonem Domini, quem locutus est in manu servi sui Ahiæ prophetæ. 19 Reliqua autem verborum Jeroboam, quomodo pugnaverit, et quomodo regnaverit, ecce scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Israël. 20 Dies autem quibus regnavit Jeroboam, viginti duo anni sunt: et dormivit cum patribus suis, regnavitque Nadab filius ejus pro eo.

21 καὶ Ροβοαμ υἱὸς Σαλωμων ἐβασίλευσεν ἐπὶ Ιουδα υἱὸς τεσσαράκοντα καὶ ἑνὸς ἐνιαυτῶν Ροβοαμ ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτὸν καὶ δέκα ἑπτὰ ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ τῇ πόλει ἣν ἐξελέξατο κύριος θέσθαι τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἐκεῖ ἐκ πασῶν φυλῶν τοῦ Ισραηλ καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Νααμα ἡ Αμμανῖτις 22 καὶ ἐποίησεν Ροβοαμ τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον κυρίου καὶ παρεζήλωσεν αὐτὸν ἐν πᾶσιν οἷς ἐποίησαν οἱ πατέρες αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις αὐτῶν αἷς ἥμαρτον 23 καὶ ᾠκοδόμησαν ἑαυτοῖς ὑψηλὰ καὶ στήλας καὶ ἄλση ἐπὶ πάντα βουνὸν ὑψηλὸν καὶ ὑποκάτω παντὸς ξύλου συσκίου 24 καὶ σύνδεσμος ἐγενήθη ἐν τῇ γῇ καὶ ἐποίησαν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν βδελυγμάτων τῶν ἐθνῶν ὧν ἐξῆρεν κύριος ἀπὸ προσώπου υἱῶν Ισραηλ 25 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἐνιαυτῷ τῷ πέμπτῳ βασιλεύοντος Ροβοαμ ἀνέβη Σουσακιμ βασιλεὺς Αἰγύπτου ἐπὶ Ιερουσαλημ 26 καὶ ἔλαβεν πάντας τοὺς θησαυροὺς οἴκου κυρίου καὶ τοὺς θησαυροὺς οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ τὰ δόρατα τὰ χρυσᾶ ἃ ἔλαβεν Δαυιδ ἐκ χειρὸς τῶν παίδων Αδρααζαρ βασιλέως Σουβα καὶ εἰσήνεγκεν αὐτὰ εἰς Ιερουσαλημ τὰ πάντα ἔλαβεν ὅπλα τὰ χρυσᾶ 27 καὶ ἐποίησεν Ροβοαμ ὁ βασιλεὺς ὅπλα χαλκᾶ ἀν{T'} αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπέθεντο ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν οἱ ἡγούμενοι τῶν παρατρεχόντων οἱ φυλάσσοντες τὸν πυλῶνα οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως 28 καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε εἰσεπορεύετο ὁ βασιλεὺς εἰς οἶκον κυρίου καὶ ᾖρον αὐτὰ οἱ παρατρέχοντες καὶ ἀπηρείδοντο αὐτὰ εἰς τὸ θεε τῶν παρατρεχόντων 29 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ροβοαμ καὶ πάντα ἃ ἐποίησεν οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐν βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ιουδα 30 καὶ πόλεμος ἦν ἀνὰ μέσον Ροβοαμ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Ιεροβοαμ πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας 31 καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ροβοαμ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ θάπτεται μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἐν πόλει Δαυιδ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Αβιου υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ

21 Meanwhile king Solomon’s son Roboam was reigning in Juda. He was forty-one years old when he came to the throne, and for seventeen years he reigned as king at Jerusalem, the city which the Lord chose out of all the cities of Israel to be the sanctuary of his name. His mother was an Ammonitess called Naama. 22 In his reign the men of Juda earned the Lord’s displeasure by sinning against him more defiantly than their fathers ever had before them. 23 They, like the men of Israel, raised altar and image and shrine, on every high hill and under every spreading tree; 24 and these shrines had their prostitutes; they flourished again, all the unnatural deeds of the heathen, whom the Lord dispossessed at Israel’s coming. 25 In Roboam’s fifth year, Sesac king of Egypt marched on Jerusalem, 26 and took away all the treasures from temple and palace, plundering everywhere; took away, too, the shields of gold which Solomon had fashioned. 27 In place of these, Roboam made shields of bronze, which he entrusted to the captains of his shield-bearers and palace guards; 28 when he made a progress into the Lord’s house, they were carried by the officers that marched before him, and afterwards taken back to the shield-bearers’ armoury. 29 What else Roboam did, all the history of his reign, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Juda. 30 All through his reign there was war between him and Jeroboam. 31 So Roboam, son of the Ammonitess Naama, was laid to rest with his fathers, with the Keep of David for his burying-place; and the throne passed to his son Abiam.

21 Porro Roboam filius Salomonis regnavit in Juda. Quadraginta et unius anni erat Roboam cum regnare cœpisset: decem et septem annos regnavit in Jerusalem civitate, quam elegit Dominus ut poneret nomen suum ibi, ex omnibus tribubus Israël. Nomen autem matris ejus Naama Ammanitis. 22 Et fecit Judas malum coram Domino, et irritaverunt eum super omnibus quæ fecerant patres eorum in peccatis suis quæ peccaverunt. 23 Ædificaverunt enim et ipsi sibi aras, et statuas, et lucos super omnem collem excelsum, et subter omnem arborem frondosam: 24 sed et effeminati fuerunt in terra, feceruntque omnes abominationes gentium quas attrivit Dominus ante faciem filiorum Israël. 25 In quinto autem anno regni Roboam, ascendit Sesac rex Ægypti in Jerusalem, 26 et tulit thesauros domus Domini, et thesauros regios, et universa diripuit: scuta quoque aurea, quæ fecerat Salomon: 27 pro quibus fecit rex Roboam scuta ærea, et tradidit ea in manum ducum scutariorum, et eorum qui excubabant ante ostium domus regis. 28 Cumque ingrederetur rex in domum Domini, portabant ea qui præeundi habebant officium: et postea reportabant ad armamentarium scutariorum. 29 Reliqua autem sermonum Roboam, et omnia quæ fecit, ecce scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Juda. 30 Fuitque bellum inter Roboam et Jeroboam cunctis diebus. 31 Dormivitque Roboam cum patribus suis, et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David: nomen autem matris ejus Naama Ammanitis: et regnavit Abiam filius ejus pro eo.

[1] ‘Bondman or free man’; literally, ‘shut up or last’. The same Hebrew idiom is used here as in Deut. 32.36.
