1 καὶ ἠθέτησεν Μωαβ ἐν Ισραηλ μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν Αχααβ

1 It was after Achab’s death that the Moabites threw off their allegiance to Israel.

1 Prævaricatus est autem Moab in Israël, postquam mortuus est Achab.

2 καὶ ἔπεσεν Οχοζιας διὰ τοῦ δικτυωτοῦ τοῦ ἐν τῷ ὑπερῴῳ αὐτοῦ τῷ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ καὶ ἠρρώστησεν καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ἀγγέλους καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς δεῦτε καὶ ἐπιζητήσατε ἐν τῇ Βααλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ακκαρων εἰ ζήσομαι ἐκ τῆς ἀρρωστίας μου ταύτης καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ἐπερωτῆσαι δ{I'} αὐτοῦ 3 καὶ ἄγγελος κυρίου ἐλάλησεν πρὸς Ηλιου τὸν Θεσβίτην λέγων ἀναστὰς δεῦρο εἰς συνάντησιν τῶν ἀγγέλων Οχοζιου βασιλέως Σαμαρείας καὶ λαλήσεις πρὸς αὐτούς εἰ παρὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι θεὸν ἐν Ισραηλ ὑμεῖς πορεύεσθε ἐπιζητῆσαι ἐν τῇ Βααλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ακκαρων 4 καὶ οὐχ οὕτως ὅτι τάδε λέγει κύριος ἡ κλίνη ἐ{F'} ἧς ἀνέβης ἐκεῖ οὐ καταβήσῃ ἀ{P'} αὐτῆς ὅτι ἐκεῖ θανάτῳ ἀποθανῇ καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ηλιου καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς 5 καὶ ἐπεστράφησαν οἱ ἄγγελοι πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς τί ὅτι ἐπεστρέψατε 6 καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν ἀνὴρ ἀνέβη εἰς συνάντησιν ἡμῶν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς ἡμᾶς δεῦτε ἐπιστράφητε πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα τὸν ἀποστείλαντα ὑμᾶς καὶ λαλήσατε πρὸς αὐτόν τάδε λέγει κύριος εἰ παρὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι θεὸν ἐν Ισραηλ σὺ πορεύῃ ζητῆσαι ἐν τῇ Βααλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ακκαρων οὐχ οὕτως ἡ κλίνη ἐ{F'} ἧς ἀνέβης ἐκεῖ οὐ καταβήσῃ ἀ{P'} αὐτῆς ὅτι θανάτῳ ἀποθανῇ 7 καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς λέγων τίς ἡ κρίσις τοῦ ἀνδρὸς τοῦ ἀναβάντος εἰς συνάντησιν ὑμῖν καὶ λαλήσαντος πρὸς ὑμᾶς τοὺς λόγους τούτους 8 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτόν ἀνὴρ δασὺς καὶ ζώνην δερματίνην περιεζωσμένος τὴν ὀσφὺν αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν Ηλιου ὁ Θεσβίτης οὗτός ἐστιν

2 It went ill with Ochozias; he had a fall from the window of his upper room at Samaria. And he sent messengers to consult Beelzebub, the god they worship at Accaron, whether he might hope to recover from his sickness. 3 But an angel of the Lord bade Elias go to meet these messengers from Samaria on their way, and ask them, Has Israel no God of its own, that you should go and consult Beelzebub, the god of Accaron? 4 Here, then, is the Lord’s message to Ochozias, Never shalt thou leave the bed thou liest on; thou art doomed to die. So Elias went on his errand; 5 and Ochozias’ messengers returned to their master. When he asked why they had returned, 6 they told him how one had met them and bidden them go back to the king who sent them; of the Lord’s message, too, that rebuked him for sending to consult Beelzebub, god of Accaron, as if Israel had no God of its own, and doomed him to die where he lay. 7 Then he would know what was the look of the man who had met them and so spoken. 8 A shaggy fellow, they told him, with a skin girt about his loins. And he said, It was Elias the Thesbite.

2 Ceciditque Ochozias per cancellos cœnaculi sui, quod habebat in Samaria, et ægrotavit: misitque nuntios, dicens ad eos: Ite, consulite Beelzebub deum Accaron, utrum vivere queam de infirmitate mea hac. 3 Angelus autem Domini locutus est ad Eliam Thesbiten, dicens: Surge, et ascende in occursum nuntiorum regis Samariæ, et dices ad eos: Numquid non est Deus in Israël, ut eatis ad consulendum Beelzebub deum Accaron? 4 Quam ob rem hæc dicit Dominus: De lectulo, super quem ascendisti, non descendes, sed morte morieris. Et abiit Elias. 5 Reversique sunt nuntii ad Ochoziam. Qui dixit eis: Quare reversi estis? 6 At illi responderunt ei: Vir occurrit nobis, et dixit ad nos: Ite, et revertimini ad regem qui misit vos, et dicetis ei: Hæc dicit Dominus: Numquid quia non erat Deus in Israël, mittis ut consulatur Beelzebub deus Accaron? idcirco de lectulo, super quem ascendisti, non descendes, sed morte morieris. 7 Qui dixit eis: Cujus figuræ et habitus est vir ille, qui occurrit vobis, et locutus est verba hæc? 8 At illi dixerunt: Vir pilosus, et zona pellicea accinctus renibus. Qui ait: Elias Thesbites est.

9 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡγούμενον πεντηκόνταρχον καὶ τοὺς πεντήκοντα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνέβη καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτόν καὶ ἰδοὺ Ηλιου ἐκάθητο ἐπὶ τῆς κορυφῆς τοῦ ὄρους καὶ ἐλάλησεν ὁ πεντηκόνταρχος πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν ἄνθρωπε τοῦ θεοῦ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐκάλεσέν σε κατάβηθι 10 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ηλιου καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν πεντηκόνταρχον καὶ εἰ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐγώ καταβήσεται πῦρ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ καταφάγεταί σε καὶ τοὺς πεντήκοντά σου καὶ κατέβη πῦρ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ κατέφαγεν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς πεντήκοντα αὐτοῦ 11 καὶ προσέθετο ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἄλλον πεντηκόνταρχον καὶ τοὺς πεντήκοντα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀνέβη καὶ ἐλάλησεν ὁ πεντηκόνταρχος πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν ἄνθρωπε τοῦ θεοῦ τάδε λέγει ὁ βασιλεύς ταχέως κατάβηθι 12 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη Ηλιου καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν εἰ ἄνθρωπος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐγώ εἰμι καταβήσεται πῦρ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ καταφάγεταί σε καὶ τοὺς πεντήκοντά σου καὶ κατέβη πῦρ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ κατέφαγεν αὐτὸν καὶ τοὺς πεντήκοντα αὐτοῦ 13 καὶ προσέθετο ὁ βασιλεὺς ἔτι ἀποστεῖλαι ἡγούμενον πεντηκόνταρχον τρίτον καὶ τοὺς πεντήκοντα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὁ πεντηκόνταρχος ὁ τρίτος καὶ ἔκαμψεν ἐπὶ τὰ γόνατα αὐτοῦ κατέναντι Ηλιου καὶ ἐδεήθη αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν ἄνθρωπε τοῦ θεοῦ ἐντιμωθήτω δὴ ἡ ψυχή μου καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ τῶν δούλων σου τούτων τῶν πεντήκοντα ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου 14 ἰδοὺ κατέβη πῦρ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ κατέφαγεν τοὺς δύο πεντηκοντάρχους τοὺς πρώτους καὶ τοὺς πεντήκοντα αὐτῶν καὶ νῦν ἐντιμωθήτω δὴ ἡ ψυχὴ τῶν δούλων σου ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου

9 Thereupon the king sent a captain at the head of fifty men to find him. And this captain, climbing the mountain on which the prophet then dwelt, bade him come down in the king’s name. 10 If prophet I am, Elias answered, let fire come down from heaven to consume thee and thy men with thee; and with that, came fire from heaven, and he and his fifty were consumed. 11 So the king sent another captain with fifty men more, and he too would have the prophet come down in the king’s name. 12 If prophet I am, said he, let fire come down from heaven to consume thee and thy men with thee; and once more, captain and men were consumed by fire. 13 But when a third captain was sent out with his men, he came and knelt before Elias in entreaty; My lord prophet, he said, have some regard to my life, and the lives of these that follow me. 14 Two other captains the fire from heaven has consumed, and fifty men with either of them; on my life, I pray thee, have pity.

9 Misitque ad eum quinquagenarium principem, et quinquaginta qui erant sub eo. Qui ascendit ad eum: sedentique in vertice montis, ait: Homo Dei, rex præcepit ut descendas. 10 Respondensque Elias, dixit quinquagenario: Si homo Dei sum, descendat ignis de cælo, et devoret te, et quinquaginta tuos. Descendit itaque ignis de cælo, et devoravit eum, et quinquaginta qui erant cum eo. 11 Rursumque misit ad eum principem quinquagenarium alterum, et quinquaginta cum eo. Qui locutus est illi: Homo Dei, hæc dicit rex: Festina, descende. 12 Respondens Elias, ait: Si homo Dei ego sum, descendat ignis de cælo, et devoret te, et quinquaginta tuos. Descendit ergo ignis de cælo, et devoravit illum, et quinquaginta ejus. 13 Iterum misit principem quinquagenarium tertium, et quinquaginta qui erant cum eo. Qui cum venisset, curvavit genua contra Eliam, et precatus est eum, et ait: Homo Dei, noli despicere animam meam, et animas servorum tuorum qui mecum sunt. 14 Ecce descendit ignis de cælo, et devoravit duos principes quinquagenarios primos, et quinquagenos qui cum eis erant: sed nunc obsecro ut miserearis animæ meæ.

15 καὶ ἐλάλησεν ἄγγελος κυρίου πρὸς Ηλιου καὶ εἶπεν κατάβηθι με{T'} αὐτοῦ μὴ φοβηθῇς ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν καὶ ἀνέστη Ηλιου καὶ κατέβη με{T'} αὐτοῦ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα 16 καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν Ηλιου τάδε λέγει κύριος τί ὅτι ἀπέστειλας ἀγγέλους ζητῆσαι ἐν τῇ Βααλ μυῖαν θεὸν Ακκαρων οὐχ οὕτως ἡ κλίνη ἐ{F'} ἧς ἀνέβης ἐκεῖ οὐ καταβήσῃ ἀ{P'} αὐτῆς ὅτι θανάτῳ ἀποθανῇ 17 καὶ ἀπέθανεν κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα κυρίου ὃ ἐλάλησεν Ηλιου 18 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Οχοζιου ὅσα ἐποίησεν οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίου λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ καὶ Ιωραμ υἱὸς Αχααβ βασιλεύει ἐπὶ Ισραηλ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ ἔτη δέκα δύο ἐν ἔτει ὀκτωκαιδεκάτῳ Ιωσαφατ βασιλέως Ιουδα καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐνώπιον κυρίου πλὴν οὐχ ὡς οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ οὐδὲ ὡς ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀπέστησεν τὰς στήλας τοῦ Βααλ ἃς ἐποίησεν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ καὶ συνέτριψεν αὐτάς πλὴν ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις οἴκου Ιεροβοαμ ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ισραηλ ἐκολλήθη οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν καὶ ἐθυμώθη ὀργῇ κύριος εἰς τὸν οἶκον Αχααβ

15 Then the angel of the Lord said to Elias, Go down with them; thou hast nothing to fear. So he set out to accompany the man into the royal presence. 16 And he told the king, Thou, who hast sent to consult Beelzebub, Accaron’s god, as though God in Israel there were none, shalt never leave the bed thou liest on; thou art doomed to die. 17 And die he did, as Elias had foretold in the Lord’s name, with never a son to follow him; the throne passed to his brother Joram. This was in the second year of Josaphat’s son, Joram, king of Juda. 18 What else Ochozias did, all his history, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel.

15 Locutus est autem angelus Domini ad Eliam, dicens: Descende cum eo: ne timeas. Surrexit igitur, et descendit cum eo ad regem, 16 et locutus est ei: Hæc dicit Dominus: Quia misisti nuntios ad consulendum Beelzebub deum Accaron, quasi non esset Deus in Israël a quo posses interrogare sermonem, ideo de lectulo super quem ascendisti, non descendes, sed morte morieris. 17 Mortuus est ergo juxta sermonem Domini quem locutus est Elias, et regnavit Joram frater ejus pro eo, anno secundo Joram filii Josaphat regis Judæ: non enim habebat filium. 18 Reliqua autem verborum Ochoziæ quæ operatus est, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?
