1 ἐν τῷ ὀγδόῳ μηνὶ ἔτους δευτέρου ἐπὶ Δαρείου ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρὸς Ζαχαριαν τὸν τοῦ Βαραχιου υἱὸν Αδδω τὸν προφήτην λέγων 2 ὠργίσθη κύριος ἐπὶ τοὺς πατέρας ὑμῶν ὀργὴν μεγάλην 3 καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ ἐπιστρέψατε πρός με καὶ ἐπιστραφήσομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς λέγει κύριος 4 καὶ μὴ γίνεσθε καθὼς οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν οἷς ἐνεκάλεσαν αὐτοῖς οἱ προφῆται οἱ ἔμπροσθεν λέγοντες τάδε λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ ἀποστρέψατε ἀπὸ τῶν ὁδῶν ὑμῶν τῶν πονηρῶν καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἐπιτηδευμάτων ὑμῶν τῶν πονηρῶν καὶ οὐ προσέσχον τοῦ εἰσακοῦσαί μου λέγει κύριος 5 οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ποῦ εἰσιν καὶ οἱ προφῆται μὴ τὸν αἰῶνα ζήσονται 6 πλὴν τοὺς λόγους μου καὶ τὰ νόμιμά μου δέχεσθε ὅσα ἐγὼ ἐντέλλομαι ἐν πνεύματί μου τοῖς δούλοις μου τοῖς προφήταις οἳ κατελάβοσαν τοὺς πατέρας ὑμῶν καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν καθὼς παρατέτακται κύριος παντοκράτωρ τοῦ ποιῆσαι κατὰ τὰς ὁδοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ κατὰ τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα ὑμῶν οὕτως ἐποίησεν ὑμῖν

1 It was in the second year of Darius’ reign, and the eighth month of it, that a message from the Lord came to the prophet Zacharias, son of Barachias, son of Addo. And thus it ran: 2 Beyond question, your fathers incurred the Lord’s displeasure; 3 and now this word thou must proclaim from the Lord of hosts, Come back to me, he bids you, and I, he promises, will come back to your side. 4 Prophets there were long since, that warned those fathers of yours in his name, they should turn away from ill living and rebellious thoughts; yet neither heed nor hearing, he says, would they give me; not for you to follow their example. 5 Gone, the men of an earlier day; prophets that spoke to them might not live on for ever, 6 but warning of mine, promise of mine, entrusted to the prophets that were my true servants, live on yet. See how the fulfilment of them overtook your fathers, till at last they must needs repent, must acknowledge the Lord of hosts had not threatened them, sinners and rebels, in vain!

1 In mense octavo, in anno secundo Darii regis, factum est verbum Domini ad Zachariam filium Barachiæ filii Addo prophetam, dicens: 2 Iratus est Dominus super patres vestros iracundia. 3 Et dices ad eos:

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:
Convertimini ad me, ait Dominus exercituum,
et convertar ad vos, dicit Dominus exercituum. 4
Ne sitis sicut patres vestri,
ad quos clamabant prophetæ priores, dicentes:
Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:
Convertimini de viis vestris malis,
et de cogitationibus vestris pessimis:
et non audierunt, neque attenderunt ad me,
dicit Dominus. 5
Patres vestri, ubi sunt?
et prophetæ numquid in sempiternum vivent? 6
Verumtamen verba mea, et legitima mea,
quæ mandavi servis meis prophetis,
numquid non comprehenderunt patres vestros,
et conversi sunt, et dixerunt:
Sicut cogitavit Dominus exercituum facere nobis
secundum vias nostras, et secundum adinventiones nostras,
fecit nobis?

7 τῇ τετράδι καὶ εἰκάδι τῷ ἑνδεκάτῳ μηνί οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ μὴν Σαβατ ἐν τῷ δευτέρῳ ἔτει ἐπὶ Δαρείου ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρὸς Ζαχαριαν τὸν τοῦ Βαραχιου υἱὸν Αδδω τὸν προφήτην λέγων 8 ἑώρακα τὴν νύκτα καὶ ἰδοὺ ἀνὴρ ἐπιβεβηκὼς ἐπὶ ἵππον πυρρόν καὶ οὗτος εἱστήκει ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν δύο ὀρέων τῶν κατασκίων καὶ ὀπίσω αὐτοῦ ἵπποι πυρροὶ καὶ ψαροὶ καὶ ποικίλοι καὶ λευκοί 9 καὶ εἶπα τί οὗτοι κύριε καὶ εἶπεν πρός με ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ λαλῶν ἐν ἐμοί ἐγὼ δείξω σοι τί ἐστιν ταῦτα 10 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἀνὴρ ὁ ἐφεστηκὼς ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ὀρέων καὶ εἶπεν πρός με οὗτοί εἰσιν οὓς ἐξαπέσταλκεν κύριος τοῦ περιοδεῦσαι τὴν γῆν 11 καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν τῷ ἀγγέλῳ κυρίου τῷ ἐφεστῶτι ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ὀρέων καὶ εἶπον περιωδεύκαμεν πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν καὶ ἰδοὺ πᾶσα ἡ γῆ κατοικεῖται καὶ ἡσυχάζει 12 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου καὶ εἶπεν κύριε παντοκράτωρ ἕως τίνος οὐ μὴ ἐλεήσῃς τὴν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ τὰς πόλεις Ιουδα ἃς ὑπερεῖδες τοῦτο ἑβδομηκοστὸν ἔτος 13 καὶ ἀπεκρίθη κύριος παντοκράτωρ τῷ ἀγγέλῳ τῷ λαλοῦντι ἐν ἐμοὶ ῥήματα καλὰ καὶ λόγους παρακλητικούς 14 καὶ εἶπεν πρός με ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ λαλῶν ἐν ἐμοί ἀνάκραγε λέγων τάδε λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ ἐζήλωκα τὴν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ τὴν Σιων ζῆλον μέγαν 15 καὶ ὀργὴν μεγάλην ἐγὼ ὀργίζομαι ἐπὶ τὰ ἔθνη τὰ συνεπιτιθέμενα ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἐγὼ μὲν ὠργίσθην ὀλίγα αὐτοὶ δὲ συνεπέθεντο εἰς κακά 16 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐπιστρέψω ἐπὶ Ιερουσαλημ ἐν οἰκτιρμῷ καὶ ὁ οἶκός μου ἀνοικοδομηθήσεται ἐν αὐτῇ λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ καὶ μέτρον ἐκταθήσεται ἐπὶ Ιερουσαλημ ἔτι 17 καὶ εἶπεν πρός με ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ λαλῶν ἐν ἐμοί ἀνάκραγε λέγων τάδε λέγει κύριος παντοκράτωρ ἔτι διαχυθήσονται πόλεις ἐν ἀγαθοῖς καὶ ἐλεήσει κύριος ἔτι τὴν Σιων καὶ αἱρετιεῖ ἔτι τὴν Ιερουσαλημ

7 Then, on the twenty-fourth day of Sabath, which is the eleventh month, word came from the Lord afresh, and once more it came to Zacharias, son of Barachias, son of Addo. 8 A vision appeared to me in the night, of one that was mounted on a sorrel horse, at a stand among the myrtle-trees, down in the Valley; and never a horse in all his company but was sorrel, roan or white. 9 Scarce had I asked, My Lord, what be these? when the angel that inspired me[1] promised he would shew me the meaning of it; 10 and with that, my answer came from him who stood among the myrtle-trees, These have gone out on the Lord’s errand, patrolling the earth. 11 And to him, now, the angel of the myrtle-wood, those others made their report: All earth we have patrolled, said they, and everywhere is safety, everywhere is rest. 12 Ah, Lord of hosts, my angel monitor said, wilt thou never relent, never take pity upon Jerusalem and the towns of Juda? Here be seventy years come and gone. 13 And with that, the Lord answered him; gracious his words were, gracious and full of comfort. 14 Cry it abroad, now, my monitor said to me, this message from the Lord of hosts: Jealous, right jealous my love for Sion’s hill, 15 deep, full deep my anger against the heathen that are so well content! I would have punished Jerusalem but lightly, it was these drove home the blow. 16 And now, the Lord says, I am for Jerusalem again, bringing pardon with me; temple shall be built there for the Lord of hosts, Jerusalem shall see mason’s plummet busy once again. 17 And this, too: A promise from the Lord of hosts! Yonder towns shall yet overflow with riches; Sion shall yet receive comfort, Jerusalem be the city of my choice.

Et dixit ad me angelus qui loquebatur in me: Ego ostendam tibi quid sint hæc. 10 Et respondit vir qui stabat inter myrteta, et dixit: Isti sunt quos misit Dominus ut perambulent terram. 11 Et responderunt angelo Domini, qui stabat inter myrteta, et dixerunt: Perambulavimus terram, et ecce omnis terra habitatur, et quiescit. 12 Et respondit angelus Domini, et dixit: Domine exercituum, usquequo tu non misereberis Jerusalem, et urbium Juda, quibus iratus es? iste jam septuagesimus annus est. 13 Et respondit Dominus angelo qui loquebatur in me verba bona, verba consolatoria. 14 Et dixit ad me angelus qui loquebatur in me: Clama, dicens:

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:
Zelatus sum Jerusalem et Sion zelo magno, 15
et ira magna ego irascor super gentes opulentas,
quia ego iratus sum parum,
ipsi vero adjuverunt in malum. 16
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus:
Revertar ad Jerusalem in misericordiis,
et domus mea ædificabitur in ea, ait Dominus exercituum,
et perpendiculum extendetur super Jerusalem. 17 Adhuc clama, dicens:

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:
Adhuc affluent civitates meæ bonis,
et consolabitur adhuc Dominus Sion, et eliget adhuc Jerusalem.

18 καὶ ἦρα τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου καὶ εἶδον καὶ ἰδοὺ τέσσαρα κέρατα 19 καὶ εἶπα πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον τὸν λαλοῦντα ἐν ἐμοί τί ἐστιν ταῦτα κύριε καὶ εἶπεν πρός με ταῦτα τὰ κέρατα τὰ διασκορπίσαντα τὸν Ιουδαν καὶ τὸν Ισραηλ 20 καὶ ἔδειξέν μοι κύριος τέσσαρας τέκτονας 21 καὶ εἶπα τί οὗτοι ἔρχονται ποιῆσαι καὶ εἶπεν πρός με ταῦτα τὰ κέρατα τὰ διασκορπίσαντα τὸν Ιουδαν καὶ τὸν Ισραηλ κατέαξαν καὶ οὐδεὶς αὐτῶν ἦρεν κεφαλήν καὶ εἰσῆλθον οὗτοι τοῦ ὀξῦναι αὐτὰ εἰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν τὰ τέσσαρα κέρατα τὰ ἔθνη τὰ ἐπαιρόμενα κέρας ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν κυρίου τοῦ διασκορπίσαι αὐτήν

18 Then I looked up, and what saw I? Here were four horns;[2] 19 and when I asked my guide what they should be, he told me, Upon these horns, Juda and Israel and Jerusalem were tossed about. 20 After that, the Lord sent me another vision of four blacksmiths; 21 What errand, said I, have these? Why, said he, yonder horns made such havoc of Juda till now, never a man might lift his head; what should be the blacksmiths’ errand but to turn them back?[3] Polled they must be henceforward, the heathen folk that once tossed Juda to the winds.

18 Et levavi oculos meos, et vidi, et ecce quatuor cornua. 19 Et dixi ad angelum qui loquebatur in me: Quid sunt hæc? Et dixit ad me: Hæc sunt cornua quæ ventilaverunt Judam, et Israël, et Jerusalem. 20 Et ostendit mihi Dominus quatuor fabros. 21 Et dixi: Quid isti veniunt facere? Qui ait, dicens: Hæc sunt cornua quæ ventilaverunt Judam per singulos viros, et nemo eorum levavit caput suum: et venerunt isti deterrere ea, ut dejiciant cornua gentium, quæ levaverunt cornu super terram Juda ut dispergerent eam.

[1] Literally, ‘the angel who spoke in (or, by means of) me’. The Hebrew text can also be rendered, ‘the angel who spoke to me’ (cf. Num. 12.6 and 8). But see note on 2.3.

[2] The horns evidently represent four (or perhaps two) enemies of the Jewish people, but they cannot be identified with certainty.

[3] ‘Turn them back’; literally, ‘scare them away’. It seems probable that there is an error in the manuscripts, and that some word more appropriate to the activities of blacksmiths originally appeared there.
