1 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τῇ Σινα ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου ἐν μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ δευτέρου ἔτους δευτέρου ἐξελθόντων αὐτῶν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου λέγων 2 λάβετε ἀρχὴν πάσης συναγωγῆς υἱῶν Ισραηλ κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ἐξ ὀνόματος αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πᾶς ἄρσην 3 ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν δυνάμει Ισραηλ ἐπισκέψασθε αὐτοὺς σὺν δυνάμει αὐτῶν σὺ καὶ Ααρων ἐπισκέψασθε αὐτούς 4 καὶ με{Q'} ὑμῶν ἔσονται ἕκαστος κατὰ φυλὴν ἑκάστου ἀρχόντων κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν ἔσονται 5 καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν ἀνδρῶν οἵτινες παραστήσονται με{Q'} ὑμῶν τῶν Ρουβην Ελισουρ υἱὸς Σεδιουρ 6 τῶν Συμεων Σαλαμιηλ υἱὸς Σουρισαδαι 7 τῶν Ιουδα Ναασσων υἱὸς Αμιναδαβ 8 τῶν Ισσαχαρ Ναθαναηλ υἱὸς Σωγαρ 9 τῶν Ζαβουλων Ελιαβ υἱὸς Χαιλων 10 τῶν υἱῶν Ιωσηφ τῶν Εφραιμ Ελισαμα υἱὸς Εμιουδ τῶν Μανασση Γαμαλιηλ υἱὸς Φαδασσουρ 11 τῶν Βενιαμιν Αβιδαν υἱὸς Γαδεωνι 12 τῶν Δαν Αχιεζερ υἱὸς Αμισαδαι 13 τῶν Ασηρ Φαγαιηλ υἱὸς Εχραν 14 τῶν Γαδ Ελισαφ υἱὸς Ραγουηλ 15 τῶν Νεφθαλι Αχιρε υἱὸς Αιναν 16 οὗτοι ἐπίκλητοι τῆς συναγωγῆς ἄρχοντες τῶν φυλῶν κατὰ πατριάς χιλίαρχοι Ισραηλ εἰσίν 17 καὶ ἔλαβεν Μωυσῆς καὶ Ααρων τοὺς ἄνδρας τούτους τοὺς ἀνακληθέντας ἐξ ὀνόματος 18 καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν συναγωγὴν συνήγαγον ἐν μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ δευτέρου ἔτους καὶ ἐπηξονοῦσαν κατὰ γενέσεις αὐτῶν κατὰ πατριὰς αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν 19 ὃν τρόπον συνέταξεν κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ καὶ ἐπεσκέπησαν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τῇ Σινα

1 In the second year after the escape from Egypt, on the first day of the second month, the Lord spoke to Moses in the tabernacle which attested his covenant, there in the desert of Sinai, giving him this message: 2 Register the whole people of Israel by their clans and their households[1] and their several names, all that are of the male sex, 3 of twenty years or more. Count up, thou and Aaron, the warriors of Israel by their companies; 4 and from each tribe you shall have one man to help you, the head of a household and of a clan. 5 These are their names; Elisur son of Sedeur for Ruben, 6 Salamiel son of Surisaddai for Simeon, 7 Nahasson son of Aminadab for Juda, 8 Nathanael son of Suar for Issachar, 9 Eliab son of Helon for Zabulon; 10 and among the descendants of Joseph, Elisama son of Ammiud for Ephraim, and Gamaliel son of Phadassur for Manasses. 11 For Benjamin, Abidan son of Gedeon; 12 for Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammisaddai; 13 for Aser, Phegiel son of Ochran; 14 for Gad, Eliasaph son of Duel; 15 for Nephthali, Ahira son of Enan. 16 These were the men chosen out of the whole multitude to represent their tribes and clans, the leaders of Israel’s host. 17 They were summoned by Moses and Aaron in the presence of the whole multitude, 18 assembled there on the first day of the second month, and together they made a register by clans and households and families and persons, enrolling each man who was twenty years old or more. 19 All alike were counted, there in the desert of Sinai, as the Lord had bidden Moses count them.

1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen in deserto Sinai in tabernaculo fœderis, prima die mensis secundi, anno altero egressionis eorum ex Ægypto, dicens: 2 Tollite summam universæ congregationis filiorum Israël per cognationes et domos suas, et nomina singulorum, quidquid sexus est masculini 3 a vigesimo anno et supra, omnium virorum fortium ex Israël, et numerabitis eos per turmas suas, tu et Aaron. 4 Eruntque vobiscum principes tribuum ac domorum in cognationibus suis, 5 quorum ista sunt nomina: de Ruben, Elisur, filius Sedeur; 6 de Simeon, Salamiel filius Surisaddai; 7 de Juda, Nahasson filius Aminadab; 8 de Issachar, Nathanaël filius Suar; 9 de Zabulon, Eliab filius Helon; 10 filiorum autem Joseph, de Ephraim, Elisama filius Ammiud; de Manasse, Gamaliel filius Phadassur; 11 de Benjamin, Abidan filius Gedeonis; 12 de Dan, Ahiezer filius Ammisaddai; 13 de Aser, Phegiel filius Ochran; 14 de Gad, Eliasaph filius Duel; 15 de Nephthali, Ahira filius Enan. 16 Hi nobilissimi principes multitudinis per tribus et cognationes suas, et capita exercitus Israël, 17 quos tulerunt Moyses et Aaron cum omni vulgi multitudine: 18 et congregaverunt primo die mensis secundi, recensentes eos per cognationes, et domos, ac familias, et capita, et nomina singulorum a vigesimo anno et supra, 19 sicut præceperat Dominus Moysi. Numeratique sunt in deserto Sinai.

20 καὶ ἐγένοντο οἱ υἱοὶ Ρουβην πρωτοτόκου Ισραηλ κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 21 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ρουβην ἓξ καὶ τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι 22 τοῖς υἱοῖς Συμεων κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 23 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Συμεων ἐννέα καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τριακόσιοι 24 τοῖς υἱοῖς Ιουδα κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 25 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ιουδα τέσσαρες καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑξακόσιοι 26 τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισσαχαρ κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 27 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ισσαχαρ τέσσαρες καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τετρακόσιοι 28 τοῖς υἱοῖς Ζαβουλων κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 29 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ζαβουλων ἑπτὰ καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τετρακόσιοι 30 τοῖς υἱοῖς Ιωσηφ υἱοῖς Εφραιμ κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 31 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Εφραιμ τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι 32 τοῖς υἱοῖς Μανασση κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 33 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Μανασση δύο καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ διακόσιοι 34 τοῖς υἱοῖς Βενιαμιν κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 35 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Βενιαμιν πέντε καὶ τριάκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τετρακόσιοι 36 τοῖς υἱοῖς Γαδ κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 37 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Γαδ πέντε καὶ τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑξακόσιοι καὶ πεντήκοντα 38 τοῖς υἱοῖς Δαν κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 39 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Δαν δύο καὶ ἑξήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ ἑπτακόσιοι 40 τοῖς υἱοῖς Ασηρ κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 41 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ασηρ μία καὶ τεσσαράκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ πεντακόσιοι 42 τοῖς υἱοῖς Νεφθαλι κατὰ συγγενείας αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ ἀριθμὸν ὀνομάτων αὐτῶν κατὰ κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν πάντα ἀρσενικὰ ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος ἐν τῇ δυνάμει 43 ἡ ἐπίσκεψις αὐτῶν ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Νεφθαλι τρεῖς καὶ πεντήκοντα χιλιάδες καὶ τετρακόσιοι 44 αὕτη ἡ ἐπίσκεψις ἣν ἐπεσκέψαντο Μωυσῆς καὶ Ααρων καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες Ισραηλ δώδεκα ἄνδρες ἀνὴρ εἷς κατὰ φυλὴν μίαν κατὰ φυλὴν οἴκων πατριᾶς ἦσαν 45 καὶ ἐγένετο πᾶσα ἡ ἐπίσκεψις υἱῶν Ισραηλ σὺν δυνάμει αὐτῶν ἀπὸ εἰκοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω πᾶς ὁ ἐκπορευόμενος παρατάξασθαι ἐν Ισραηλ 46 ἑξακόσιαι χιλιάδες καὶ τρισχίλιοι καὶ πεντακόσιοι καὶ πεντήκοντα

20 Clan and household that came down from Ruben, Israel’s first-born, could muster warriors of twenty years and more, 21 forty-six thousand five hundred. 22 Of Simeon, 23 fifty-nine thousand three hundred. 24 Of Gad, 25 forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. 26 Of Juda, 27 seventy-four thousand six hundred. 28 Of Issachar, 29 fifty-four thousand four hundred. 30 Of Zabulon, 31 fifty-seven thousand four hundred. 32 Among Joseph’s descendants, of Ephraim, 33 forty thousand five hundred; 34 of Manasses, 35 thirty-two thousand two hundred. 36 Of Benjamin, 37 thirty-five thousand four hundred. 38 Of Dan, 39 sixty-two thousand seven hundred. 40 Of Aser, 41 forty-one thousand five hundred. 42 Of Nephthali, 43 fifty-three thousand four hundred.[2] 44 Such was the register Moses and Aaron and the twelve chiefs of Israel made, household by household and family by family; 45 so that the whole muster-roll of warriors in Israel, twenty years old or more, by their households and families, 46 was six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty men.

47 οἱ δὲ Λευῖται ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς πατριᾶς αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπεσκέπησαν ἐν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ 48 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων 49 ὅρα τὴν φυλὴν τὴν Λευι οὐ συνεπισκέψῃ καὶ τὸν ἀριθμὸν αὐτῶν οὐ λήμψῃ ἐν μέσῳ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ 50 καὶ σὺ ἐπίστησον τοὺς Λευίτας ἐπὶ τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτῆς καὶ ἐπὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐστὶν ἐν αὐτῇ αὐτοὶ ἀροῦσιν τὴν σκηνὴν καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτῆς καὶ αὐτοὶ λειτουργήσουσιν ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ κύκλῳ τῆς σκηνῆς παρεμβαλοῦσιν 51 καὶ ἐν τῷ ἐξαίρειν τὴν σκηνὴν καθελοῦσιν αὐτὴν οἱ Λευῖται καὶ ἐν τῷ παρεμβάλλειν τὴν σκηνὴν ἀναστήσουσιν καὶ ὁ ἀλλογενὴς ὁ προσπορευόμενος ἀποθανέτω 52 καὶ παρεμβαλοῦσιν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ ἀνὴρ ἐν τῇ ἑαυτοῦ τάξει καὶ ἀνὴρ κατὰ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἡγεμονίαν σὺν δυνάμει αὐτῶν 53 οἱ δὲ Λευῖται παρεμβαλέτωσαν ἐναντίον κυρίου κύκλῳ τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ἁμάρτημα ἐν υἱοῖς Ισραηλ καὶ φυλάξουσιν οἱ Λευῖται αὐτοὶ τὴν φυλακὴν τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου 54 καὶ ἐποίησαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ κατὰ πάντα ἃ ἐνετείλατο κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ καὶ Ααρων οὕτως ἐποίησαν

47 But no family in the tribe of Levi was counted in the reckoning; 48 the Lord had said to Moses, 49 Do not count the tribe of Levi, or register them among the sons of Israel. 50 Give them charge of the tabernacle that bears record of me, all its appurtenances and all that goes with its worship. It is they who will carry the tabernacle with its appurtenances, they who will attend to the tabernacle and pitch their tents about it. 51 The Levites will take the tabernacle down when the order is given for marching, and set it up when the order is given for encamping; no one else must come near it, on pain of death. 52 Each Israelite will pitch his tent among the regiment, the company,[3] in which he goes to battle; 53 round the tabernacle itself none but the Levites must encamp, or the whole people of Israel will incur my displeasure; theirs it is to keep watch over the tabernacle that bears record of me. 54 Such was the Lord’s bidding to Moses, and the sons of Israel faithfully observed it.

47 Levitæ autem in tribu familiarum suarum non sunt numerati cum eis. 48 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen, dicens: 49 Tribum Levi noli numerare, neque pones summam eorum cum filiis Israël: 50 sed constitue eos super tabernaculum testimonii et cuncta vasa ejus, et quidquid ad cæremonias pertinet. Ipsi portabunt tabernaculum et omnia utensilia ejus: et erunt in ministerio, ac per gyrum tabernaculi metabuntur. 51 Cum proficiscendum fuerit, deponent Levitæ tabernaculum; cum castrametandum, erigent. [1] ‘Clans’ and ‘households’ are frequently mentioned as sub-duvisions of the tribe, and the Latin version is not always consistent in its choice of equivalents for them. Where confusion might otherwise be caused, this translation follows the Hebrew in preference to the Latin.

[2] The figures given in verses 21-43 are set out, after the manner of ancient records, with much repetitiveness; the translation given here cuts out the repetitions, to make the passage read more easily.

[3] This Hebrew word is the same as that translated ‘banner’ in 2.2.
