1 ἐν ἔτει εἰκοστῷ καὶ ἑβδόμῳ τῷ Ιεροβοαμ βασιλεῖ Ισραηλ ἐβασίλευσεν Αζαριας υἱὸς Αμεσσιου βασιλέως Ιουδα 2 υἱὸς ἑκκαίδεκα ἐτῶν ἦν ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτὸν καὶ πεντήκοντα καὶ δύο ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ὄνομα τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ Χαλια ἐξ Ιερουσαλημ 3 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ εὐθὲς ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν Αμεσσιας ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ 4 πλὴν τῶν ὑψηλῶν οὐκ ἐξῆρεν ἔτι ὁ λαὸς ἐθυσίαζεν καὶ ἐθυμίων ἐν τοῖς ὑψηλοῖς 5 καὶ ἥψατο κύριος τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ ἦν λελεπρωμένος ἕως ἡμέρας θανάτου αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν οἴκῳ αφφουσωθ καὶ Ιωαθαμ υἱὸς τοῦ βασιλέως ἐπὶ τῷ οἴκῳ κρίνων τὸν λαὸν τῆς γῆς 6 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Αζαριου καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίου λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ιουδα 7 καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Αζαριας μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἐν πόλει Δαυιδ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ιωαθαμ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ

1 It was in the twenty-seventh year of Jeroboam that Azarias succeeded his father Amasias on the throne of Juda. 2 He was then sixteen years old, and for fifty years he reigned at Jerusalem; his mother’s name was Jechelia, a woman of Jerusalem. 3 He obeyed the Lord’s will, following in all things the example of his father Amasias, 4 but did not destroy the hill-shrines; men still sacrificed and burned incense on the mountain tops. 5 On him the Lord’s hand fell, and he ended his days as a leper, dwelling apart in a house of his own, while his son Joatham had charge of the palace, and heard the complaints of his subjects. 6 What else Azarias did, all his history, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Juda. 7 So he was laid to rest with his fathers; among his ancestors, in the Keep of David, they buried him; and Joatham came to the throne.

1 Anno vigesimo septimo Jeroboam regis Israël, regnavit Azarias filius Amasiæ regis Juda. 2 Sedecim annorum erat cum regnare cœpisset, et quinquaginta duobus annis regnavit in Jerusalem: nomen matris ejus Jechelia de Jerusalem. 3 Fecitque quod erat placitum coram Domino, juxta omnia quæ fecit Amasias pater ejus. 4 Verumtamen excelsa non est demolitus: adhuc populus sacrificabat, et adolebat incensum in excelsis. 5 Percussit autem Dominus regem, et fuit leprosus usque in diem mortis suæ, et habitabat in domo libera seorsum: Joatham vero filius regis gubernabat palatium, et judicabit populum terræ. 6 Reliqua autem sermonum Azariæ, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda? 7 Et dormivit Azarias cum patribus suis: sepelieruntque eum cum majoribus suis in civitate David, et regnavit Joatham filius ejus pro eo.

8 ἐν ἔτει τριακοστῷ καὶ ὀγδόῳ τῷ Αζαρια βασιλεῖ Ιουδα ἐβασίλευσεν Ζαχαριας υἱὸς Ιεροβοαμ ἐπὶ Ισραηλ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ ἑξάμηνον 9 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου καθὰ ἐποίησαν οἱ πατέρες αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπὸ ἁμαρτιῶν Ιεροβοαμ υἱοῦ Ναβατ ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ισραηλ 10 καὶ συνεστράφησαν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν Σελλουμ υἱὸς Ιαβις καὶ Κεβλααμ καὶ ἐπάταξαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐθανάτωσαν αὐτόν καὶ Σελλουμ ἐβασίλευσεν ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ 11 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ζαχαριου ἰδού ἐστιν γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ 12 ὁ λόγος κυρίου ὃν ἐλάλησεν πρὸς Ιου λέγων υἱοὶ τέταρτοι καθήσονταί σοι ἐπὶ θρόνου Ισραηλ καὶ ἐγένετο οὕτως 13 καὶ Σελλουμ υἱὸς Ιαβις ἐβασίλευσεν καὶ ἐν ἔτει τριακοστῷ καὶ ἐνάτῳ Αζαρια βασιλεῖ Ιουδα ἐβασίλευσεν Σελλουμ μῆνα ἡμερῶν ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ 14 καὶ ἀνέβη Μαναημ υἱὸς Γαδδι ἐκ Θαρσιλα καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς Σαμάρειαν καὶ ἐπάταξεν τὸν Σελλουμ υἱὸν Ιαβις ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν αὐτόν 15 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Σελλουμ καὶ ἡ συστροφὴ αὐτοῦ ἣν συνεστράφη ἰδού εἰσιν γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ 16 τότε ἐπάταξεν Μαναημ τὴν Θερσα καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ τὰ ὅρια αὐτῆς ἀπὸ Θερσα ὅτι οὐκ ἤνοιξαν αὐτῷ καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὴν καὶ τὰς ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσας ἀνέρρηξεν

8 It was in Azarias’ thirty-eighth year that Jeroboam’s son Zacharias began his reign in Samaria; it lasted six months. 9 He defied the Lord’s will, like his fathers before him, and would not forgo the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nabat, that taught Israel to sin. 10 But soon a conspiracy was made against him by Sellum, son of Jabes, who attacked and killed him in the open street, and took the throne for himself.[1] 11 What else Zacharias did is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel. 12 Long before, in Jehu’s time, the Lord had promised, Thy heirs shall keep the throne of Israel till the fourth generation; and so it proved. 13 For one month this Sellum reigned as king at Samaria, in the thirty-ninth year of Azarias; 14 then he was killed and superseded by Menahem, son of Gadi, who marched on Samaria from Thersa; 15 what else Sellum did, all the history of his secret conspiracy, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel. 16 (From Thersa),[2] Menahem brought destruction on Thapsa, and all its inhabitants, and all their country-side, because they would not open the gates to him; ripped up the wombs, too, of the women that were pregnant.

17 ἐν ἔτει τριακοστῷ καὶ ἐνάτῳ Αζαρια βασιλεῖ Ιουδα καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Μαναημ υἱὸς Γαδδι ἐπὶ Ισραηλ δέκα ἔτη ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ 18 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπὸ πασῶν ἁμαρτιῶν Ιεροβοαμ υἱοῦ Ναβατ ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ισραηλ 19 ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις αὐτοῦ ἀνέβη Φουλ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν καὶ Μαναημ ἔδωκεν τῷ Φουλ χίλια τάλαντα ἀργυρίου εἶναι τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ με{T'} αὐτοῦ 20 καὶ ἐξήνεγκεν Μαναημ τὸ ἀργύριον ἐπὶ τὸν Ισραηλ ἐπὶ πᾶν δυνατὸν ἰσχύι δοῦναι τῷ βασιλεῖ τῶν Ἀσσυρίων πεντήκοντα σίκλους τῷ ἀνδρὶ τῷ ἑνί καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων καὶ οὐκ ἔστη ἐκεῖ ἐν τῇ γῇ 21 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Μαναημ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ 22 καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Μαναημ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Φακεϊας υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ 23 ἐν ἔτει πεντηκοστῷ τοῦ Αζαριου βασιλέως Ιουδα ἐβασίλευσεν Φακεϊας υἱὸς Μαναημ ἐπὶ Ισραηλ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ δύο ἔτη 24 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπὸ ἁμαρτιῶν Ιεροβοαμ υἱοῦ Ναβατ ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ισραηλ 25 καὶ συνεστράφη ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν Φακεε υἱὸς Ρομελιου ὁ τριστάτης αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ ἐναντίον οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως μετὰ τοῦ Αργοβ καὶ μετὰ τοῦ Αρια καὶ με{T'} αὐτοῦ πεντήκοντα ἄνδρες ἀπὸ τῶν τετρακοσίων καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ 26 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Φακεϊου καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἰδού εἰσιν γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ

17 It was in Azarias’ thirty-ninth year that Menahem, son of Gadi, began his reign of ten years at Samaria; 18 he defied the Lord’s will, and would not forgo the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nabat, that taught Israel to sin. All through his reign 19 the country suffered invasion by Phul, king of Assyria, and Menahem paid him a thousand talents of silver, to win support for his claim to the throne. 20 To find this tribute for the Assyrian king, Menahem imposed a tax of fifty silver pieces on all the rich and powerful men in his kingdom. Thus the Assyrian king was induced to go home and rid the country of his presence. 21 What else Menahem did, all his history, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel; 22 he was laid to rest with his fathers, and succeeded by his son Phaceia. 23 It was in the fiftieth year of Azarias that this Phaceia, son of Menahem, began his reign of two years at Samaria; 24 he defied the Lord’s will, and would not forgo the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nabat, that taught Israel to sin. 25 A conspiracy was made against him by one of his own commanders, Phacee son of Romelia, who attacked and slew him in his castle keep (close by Argob and Arie), with fifty Galaadites, and so became king in his place.[3] 26 What else Phaceia did, all his history, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel.

17 Anno trigesimo nono Azariæ regis Juda, regnavit Manahem filius Gadi super Israël decem annis in Samaria. 18 Fecitque quod erat malum coram Domino: non recessit a peccatis Jeroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israël, cunctis diebus ejus. 19 Veniebat Phul rex Assyriorum in terram, et dabat Manahem Phul mille talenta argenti, ut esset ei in auxilium, et firmaret regnum ejus. 20 Indixitque Manahem argentum super Israël cunctis potentibus et divitibus, ut daret regi Assyriorum quinquaginta siclos argenti per singulos: reversusque est rex Assyriorum, et non est moratus in terra. 21 Reliqua autem sermonum Manahem, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël? 22 Et dormivit Manahem cum patribus suis: regnavitque Phaceia filius ejus pro eo. 23 Anno quinquagesimo Azariæ regis Juda, regnavit Phaceia filius Manahem super Israël in Samaria biennio. 24 Et fecit quod erat malum coram Domino: non recessit a peccatis Jeroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israël. 25 Conjuravit autem adversus eum Phacee filius Romeliæ, dux ejus, et percussit eum in Samaria in turre domus regiæ, juxta Argob et juxta Arie, et cum eo quinquaginta viros de filiis Galaaditarum: et interfecit eum, regnavitque pro eo. 26 Reliqua autem sermonum Phaceia, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?

27 ἐν ἔτει πεντηκοστῷ καὶ δευτέρῳ τοῦ Αζαριου βασιλέως Ιουδα ἐβασίλευσεν Φακεε υἱὸς Ρομελιου ἐπὶ Ισραηλ ἐν Σαμαρείᾳ εἴκοσι ἔτη 28 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ πονηρὸν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου οὐκ ἀπέστη ἀπὸ πασῶν ἁμαρτιῶν Ιεροβοαμ υἱοῦ Ναβατ ὃς ἐξήμαρτεν τὸν Ισραηλ 29 ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Φακεε βασιλέως Ισραηλ ἦλθεν Θαγλαθφελλασαρ βασιλεὺς Ἀσσυρίων καὶ ἔλαβεν τὴν Αιν καὶ τὴν Αβελβαιθαμααχα καὶ τὴν Ιανωχ καὶ τὴν Κενεζ καὶ τὴν Ασωρ καὶ τὴν Γαλααδ καὶ τὴν Γαλιλαίαν πᾶσαν γῆν Νεφθαλι καὶ ἀπῴκισεν αὐτοὺς εἰς Ἀσσυρίους 30 καὶ συνέστρεψεν σύστρεμμα Ωσηε υἱὸς Ηλα ἐπὶ Φακεε υἱὸν Ρομελιου καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ ἐν ἔτει εἰκοστῷ Ιωαθαμ υἱοῦ Αζαριου 31 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Φακεε καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν ἰδού ἐστιν γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ισραηλ

27 It was in the fifty-second year of Azarias that Phacee, son of Romelia, came to the throne at Samaria; he reigned over Israel twenty years, 28 and defied the Lord’s will, never forgoing the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nabat, that taught Israel to sin. 29 During the reign of Phacee, the Assyrian king Theglath-Phalasar invaded Israel, taking Aion, Abel-Beth-Maacha, Janoe, Cedes and Asor, with Galaad and Galilee and the whole territory of Nephthali, and carrying off their inhabitants into Assyria. 30 As for Phacee, he was caught unawares and slain by a conspirator, Osee son of Ela, who succeeded him on the throne in the twentieth year of Joatham, son of Ozias. 31 What else Phacee did, all his history, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Israel.

27 Anno quinquagesimo secundo Azariæ regis Juda, regnavit Phacee filius Romeliæ super Israël in Samaria viginti annis. 28 Et fecit quod erat malum coram Domino: non recessit a peccatis Jeroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israël. 29 In diebus Phacee regis Israël, venit Theglathphalasar rex Assur, et cepit Ajon, et Abel Domum, Maacha et Janoë, et Cedes, et Asor, et Galaad, et Galilæam, et universam terram Nephthali: et transtulit eos in Assyrios. 30 Conjuravit autem et tetendit insidias Osee filius Ela contra Phacee filium Romeliæ, et percussit eum, et interfecit: regnavitque pro eo vigesimo anno Joatham filii Oziæ. 31 Reliqua autem sermonum Phacee, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro sermonum dierum regum Israël?

32 ἐν ἔτει δευτέρῳ Φακεε υἱοῦ Ρομελιου βασιλέως Ισραηλ ἐβασίλευσεν Ιωαθαμ υἱὸς Αζαριου βασιλέως Ιουδα 33 υἱὸς εἴκοσι καὶ πέντε ἐτῶν ἦν ἐν τῷ βασιλεύειν αὐτὸν καὶ ἑκκαίδεκα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ὄνομα τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ Ιερουσα θυγάτηρ Σαδωκ 34 καὶ ἐποίησεν τὸ εὐθὲς ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς κυρίου κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν Οζιας ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ 35 πλὴν τὰ ὑψηλὰ οὐκ ἐξῆρεν ἔτι ὁ λαὸς ἐθυσίαζεν καὶ ἐθυμία ἐν τοῖς ὑψηλοῖς αὐτὸς ᾠκοδόμησεν τὴν πύλην οἴκου κυρίου τὴν ἐπάνω 36 καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ιωαθαμ καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν οὐχὶ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ιουδα 37 ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἤρξατο κύριος ἐξαποστέλλειν ἐν Ιουδα τὸν Ραασσων βασιλέα Συρίας καὶ τὸν Φακεε υἱὸν Ρομελιου 38 καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Ιωαθαμ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐτάφη μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἐν πόλει Δαυιδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Αχαζ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀν{T'} αὐτοῦ

32 It was in the second year of Phacee, son of Romelia, that Joatham, son of Ozias, came to the throne of Juda. 33 He was twenty-five years old when he came to the throne, and his reign at Jerusalem lasted sixteen years; his mother’s name was Jerusa, daughter of Sadoc. 34 He obeyed the Lord’s will, following in all things the example of his father Ozias; 35 but did not abolish the hill-shrines; men still sacrificed and offered incense on the mountain-tops. He it was built the high gate that leads into the Lord’s house. 36 What else Joatham did, all his history, is to be found in the Annals of the kings of Juda. 37 This was the time at which the Lord began subjecting Juda to attack from Rasin, king of Syria, and Phacee, son of Romelia. 38 So Joatham was laid to rest with his fathers, with the Keep of David for his burying-place, and the throne passed to his son Achaz.

32 Anno secundo Phacee filii Romeliæ regis Israël, regnavit Joatham filius Oziæ regis Juda. 33 Viginti quinque annorum erat cum regnare cœpisset, et sedecim annis regnavit in Jerusalem: nomen matris ejus Jerusa filia Sadoc. 34 Fecitque quod erat placitum coram Domino: juxta omnia quæ fecerat Ozias pater suus, operatus est. 35 Verumtamen excelsa non abstulit: adhuc populus immolabat, et adolebat incensum in excelsis. Ipse ædificavit portam domus Domini sublimissimam. 36 Reliqua autem sermonum Joatham, et universa quæ fecit, nonne hæc scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda? 37 In diebus illis cœpit Dominus mittere in Judam Rasin regem Syriæ, et Phacee filium Romeliæ. 38 Et dormivit Joatham cum patribus suis, sepultusque est cum eis in civitate David patris sui: et regnavit Achaz filius ejus pro eo.

[1] ‘In the open street’; the words used in the Hebrew text are of doubtful interpretation. The Septuagint interpreters seem to have rendered a text which read ‘at Jeblaam’.

[2] ‘From Thersa’ is a phrase difficult to explain, and perhaps corrupt; Thersa was to the north and east, Thapsa to the south and west, of Samaria.
