1 καὶ παραγίνονται πᾶσαι αἱ φυλαὶ Ισραηλ πρὸς Δαυιδ εἰς Χεβρων καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ ἰδοὺ ὀστᾶ σου καὶ σάρκες σου ἡμεῖς 2 καὶ ἐχθὲς καὶ τρίτην ὄντος Σαουλ βασιλέως ἐ{F'} ἡμῖν σὺ ἦσθα ὁ ἐξάγων καὶ εἰσάγων τὸν Ισραηλ καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς σέ σὺ ποιμανεῖς τὸν λαόν μου τὸν Ισραηλ καὶ σὺ ἔσει εἰς ἡγούμενον ἐπὶ τὸν Ισραηλ 3 καὶ ἔρχονται πάντες οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ισραηλ πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα εἰς Χεβρων καὶ διέθετο αὐτοῖς ὁ βασιλεὺς Δαυιδ διαθήκην ἐν Χεβρων ἐνώπιον κυρίου καὶ χρίουσιν τὸν Δαυιδ εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ πάντα Ισραηλ 4 υἱὸς τριάκοντα ἐτῶν Δαυιδ ἐν τῷ βασιλεῦσαι αὐτὸν καὶ τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν 5 ἑπτὰ ἔτη καὶ ἓξ μῆνας ἐβασίλευσεν ἐν Χεβρων ἐπὶ τὸν Ιουδαν καὶ τριάκοντα τρία ἔτη ἐβασίλευσεν ἐπὶ πάντα Ισραηλ καὶ Ιουδαν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ

1 After this, all the tribes of Israel rallied to David at Hebron; We are kith and kin of thine, they said. 2 It is not so long since Israel marched under thy orders, when Saul was still reigning; and the Lord has promised thee that thou shouldst be its shepherd and its captain. 3 And so the elders of Israel went to his court at Hebron; and there, at Hebron, in the Lord’s presence, David made a covenant with them, and they anointed him king of Israel. 4 He was thirty years old when his reign began, and it lasted forty years; 5 for seven and a half years over Juda only, with its capital at Hebron, then for thirty-three more years over Israel and Juda both, with its capital at Jerusalem.

1 Et venerunt universæ tribus Israël ad David in Hebron, dicentes: Ecce nos os tuum et caro tua sumus. 2 Sed et heri et nudiustertius cum esset Saul rex super nos, tu eras educens et reducens Israël: dixit autem Dominus ad te: Tu pasces populum meum Israël, et tu eris dux super Israël. 3 Venerunt quoque et seniores Israël ad regem in Hebron, et percussit cum eis rex David fœdus in Hebron coram Domino: unxeruntque David in regem super Israël. 4 Filius triginta annorum erat David cum regnare cœpisset, et quadraginta annis regnavit. 5 In Hebron regnavit super Judam septem annis et sex mensibus: in Jerusalem autem regnavit triginta tribus annis super omnem Israël et Judam.

6 καὶ ἀπῆλθεν Δαυιδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτοῦ εἰς Ιερουσαλημ πρὸς τὸν Ιεβουσαῖον τὸν κατοικοῦντα τὴν γῆν καὶ ἐρρέθη τῷ Δαυιδ οὐκ εἰσελεύσει ὧδε ὅτι ἀντέστησαν οἱ τυφλοὶ καὶ οἱ χωλοί λέγοντες ὅτι οὐκ εἰσελεύσεται Δαυιδ ὧδε 7 καὶ κατελάβετο Δαυιδ τὴν περιοχὴν Σιων αὕτη ἡ πόλις τοῦ Δαυιδ 8 καὶ εἶπεν Δαυιδ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ πᾶς τύπτων Ιεβουσαῖον ἁπτέσθω ἐν παραξιφίδι καὶ τοὺς χωλοὺς καὶ τοὺς τυφλοὺς καὶ τοὺς μισοῦντας τὴν ψυχὴν Δαυιδ διὰ τοῦτο ἐροῦσιν τυφλοὶ καὶ χωλοὶ οὐκ εἰσελεύσονται εἰς οἶκον κυρίου

6 When the king and his army marched on Jerusalem, to attack the Jebusites, that were native to the soil, they met him with the taunt, Thou must rid thyself of blind men and lame, before thou canst make thy way in here, meaning that David would never make his way in; 7 but take it he did, the Citadel of Sion that is called David’s Keep. 8 He had promised a reward to the conqueror of the Jebusites, to the man who should reach the gutters of the roofs, and clear them of the blind and lame (as he called them) that were David’s enemies. That was how the saying arose, No entry into the precincts for the blind and the lame.[1]

6 Et abiit rex, et omnes viri qui erant cum eo, in Jerusalem, ad Jebusæum habitatorem terræ: dictumque est David ab eis: Non ingredieris huc, nisi abstuleris cæcos et claudos dicentes: Non ingredietur David huc. 7 Cepit autem David arcem Sion: hæc est civitas David. 8 Proposuerat enim David in die illa præmium, qui percussisset Jebusæum, et tetigisset domatum fistulas, et abstulisset cæcos et claudos odientes animam David. Idcirco dicitur in proverbio: Cæcus et claudus non intrabunt in templum.

9 καὶ ἐκάθισεν Δαυιδ ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ καὶ ἐκλήθη αὕτη ἡ πόλις Δαυιδ καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν τὴν πόλιν κύκλῳ ἀπὸ τῆς ἄκρας καὶ τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ 10 καὶ ἐπορεύετο Δαυιδ πορευόμενος καὶ μεγαλυνόμενος καὶ κύριος παντοκράτωρ με{T'} αὐτοῦ 11 καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Χιραμ βασιλεὺς Τύρου ἀγγέλους πρὸς Δαυιδ καὶ ξύλα κέδρινα καὶ τέκτονας ξύλων καὶ τέκτονας λίθων καὶ ᾠκοδόμησαν οἶκον τῷ Δαυιδ 12 καὶ ἔγνω Δαυιδ ὅτι ἡτοίμασεν αὐτὸν κύριος εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ισραηλ καὶ ὅτι ἐπήρθη ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ διὰ τὸν λαὸν αὐτοῦ Ισραηλ 13 καὶ ἔλαβεν Δαυιδ ἔτι γυναῖκας καὶ παλλακὰς ἐξ Ιερουσαλημ μετὰ τὸ ἐλθεῖν αὐτὸν ἐκ Χεβρων καὶ ἐγένοντο τῷ Δαυιδ ἔτι υἱοὶ καὶ θυγατέρες 14 καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν γεννηθέντων αὐτῷ ἐν Ιερουσαλημ Σαμμους καὶ Σωβαβ καὶ Ναθαν καὶ Σαλωμων 15 καὶ Εβεαρ καὶ Ελισους καὶ Ναφεκ καὶ Ιεφιες 16 καὶ Ελισαμα καὶ Ελιδαε καὶ Ελιφαλαθ Σαμαε Ιεσσιβαθ Ναθαν Γαλαμααν Ιεβααρ Θεησους Ελφαλατ Ναγεδ Ναφεκ Ιαναθα Λεασαμυς Βααλιμαθ Ελιφαλαθ

9 And now he made his dwelling in the Citadel, and called it David’s Keep; he built walls round it, too, with Mello for their outer bastion. 10 So he went on, prospering and gaining in strength, and the Lord God of hosts was with him. 11 Hiram too, king of Tyre, sent messengers offering him cedar planks and carpenters, and stone-masons for the walls; and they built David’s house for him. 12 No doubt could David have that the Lord had ratified his sovereignty over Israel, and made him the king of a great people. 13 So, when he removed from Hebron to Jerusalem, he provided himself with fresh wives and concubines there, and more sons and daughters were born to him; 14 Jerusalem was the birth-place of Samua, Sobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Jebahar, Elisua, Nepheg, 16 Japhia, Elisama, Elioda and Eliphaleth.

9 Habitavit autem David in arce, et vocavit eam civitatem David: et ædificavit per gyrum a Mello et intrinsecus. 10 Et ingrediebatur proficiens atque succrescens, et Dominus Deus exercituum erat cum eo. 11 Misit quoque Hiram rex Tyri nuntios ad David, et ligna cedrina, et artifices lignorum, artificesque lapidum ad parietes: et ædificaverunt domum David. 12 Et cognovit David quoniam confirmasset eum Dominus regem super Israël, et quoniam exaltasset regnum ejus super populum suum Israël. 13 Accepit ergo David adhuc concubinas et uxores de Jerusalem, postquam venerat de Hebron: natique sunt David et alii filii et filiæ: 14 et hæc nomina eorum, qui nati sunt ei in Jerusalem: Samua, et Sobab, et Nathan, et Salomon, 15 et Jebahar, et Elisua, et Nepheg, 16 et Japhia, et Elisama, et Elioda, et Eliphaleth.

17 καὶ ἤκουσαν ἀλλόφυλοι ὅτι κέχρισται Δαυιδ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ Ισραηλ καὶ ἀνέβησαν πάντες οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι ζητεῖν τὸν Δαυιδ καὶ ἤκουσεν Δαυιδ καὶ κατέβη εἰς τὴν περιοχήν 18 καὶ οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι παραγίνονται καὶ συνέπεσαν εἰς τὴν κοιλάδα τῶν τιτάνων 19 καὶ ἠρώτησεν Δαυιδ διὰ κυρίου λέγων εἰ ἀναβῶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους καὶ παραδώσεις αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰς χεῖράς μου καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Δαυιδ ἀνάβαινε ὅτι παραδιδοὺς παραδώσω τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους εἰς τὰς χεῖράς σου 20 καὶ ἦλθεν Δαυιδ ἐκ τῶν ἐπάνω διακοπῶν καὶ ἔκοψεν τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους ἐκεῖ καὶ εἶπεν Δαυιδ διέκοψεν κύριος τοὺς ἐχθρούς μου τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους ἐνώπιον ἐμοῦ ὡς διακόπτεται ὕδατα διὰ τοῦτο ἐκλήθη τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου ἐπάνω διακοπῶν 21 καὶ καταλιμπάνουσιν ἐκεῖ τοὺς θεοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐλάβοσαν αὐτοὺς Δαυιδ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ με{T'} αὐτοῦ 22 καὶ προσέθεντο ἔτι ἀλλόφυλοι τοῦ ἀναβῆναι καὶ συνέπεσαν ἐν τῇ κοιλάδι τῶν τιτάνων 23 καὶ ἐπηρώτησεν Δαυιδ διὰ κυρίου καὶ εἶπεν κύριος οὐκ ἀναβήσει εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῶν ἀποστρέφου ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν καὶ παρέσει αὐτοῖς πλησίον τοῦ κλαυθμῶνος 24 καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῷ ἀκοῦσαί σε τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ συγκλεισμοῦ τοῦ ἄλσους τοῦ κλαυθμῶνος τότε καταβήσει πρὸς αὐτούς ὅτι τότε ἐξελεύσεται κύριος ἔμπροσθέν σου κόπτειν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ τῶν ἀλλοφύλων 25 καὶ ἐποίησεν Δαυιδ καθὼς ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ κύριος καὶ ἐπάταξεν τοὺς ἀλλοφύλους ἀπὸ Γαβαων ἕως τῆς γῆς Γαζηρα

17 When news reached the Philistines that David had been anointed as king of all Israel, they mustered their forces to hunt him down. David, hearing of it, withdrew into his stronghold, 18 while the Philistines came in and occupied the whole valley of Raphaim. 19 Thereupon David consulted the Lord; should he attack the Philistines? Would he be given the mastery? And he was bidden to go to the attack; the Philistines would be at his mercy. 20 So David marched out to Baal-Pharasim, and defeated them there; The Lord has parted the enemy’s ranks before me, he said, as easily as water parts this way and that; so the place came by its name, Baal-Pharasim, The Master of the Breach. 21 They left their idols behind them there, and these fell into the hands of David and his men. 22 But once more the Philistines came to the attack, and occupied the Raphaim valley; 23 and this time, when David asked whether he might attack them with good hope of mastering them, the answer was, Do not go to the attack, circumvent them and come upon them from the direction of the pear-trees yonder. 24 Wait till thou hearest, in the tops of the pear-trees, the sound of marching feet; then offer battle; it is a sign that the Lord will pass on before thee, to smite down the army of the Philistines. 25 So David did as the Lord had bidden him; and he drove the Philistines before him all the way from Gabaa to Gezer.

17 Audierunt ergo Philisthiim quod unxissent David in regem super Israël, et ascenderunt universi ut quærerent David: quod cum audisset David, descendit in præsidium. 18 Philisthiim autem venientes diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim. 19 Et consuluit David Dominum, dicens: Si ascendam ad Philisthiim? et si dabis eos in manu mea? Et dixit Dominus ad David: Ascende, quia tradens dabo Philisthiim in manu tua. 20 Venit ergo David in Baal Pharasim: et percussit eos ibi, et dixit: Divisit Dominus inimicos meos coram me, sicut dividuntur aquæ. Propterea vocatum est nomen loci illius, Baal Pharasim. 21 Et reliquerunt ibi sculptilia sua, quæ tulit David et viri ejus. 22 Et addiderunt adhuc Philisthiim ut ascenderent, et diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim. 23 Consuluit autem David Dominum: Si ascendam contra Philisthæos, et tradas eos in manus meas? Qui respondit: Non ascendas contra eos, sed gyra post tergum eorum, et venies ad eos ex adverso pyrorum. 24 Et cum audieris sonitum gradientis in cacumine pyrorum, tunc inibis prælium: quia tunc egredietur Dominus ante faciem tuam, ut percutiat castra Philisthiim. 25 Fecit itaque David sicut præceperat ei Dominus, et percussit Philisthiim de Gabaa usque dum venias Gezer.

[1] The sense of these verses is much disputed, and some think the text has suffered from corruption. As it stands, the meaning seems to be that David had, in the first instance, described the Jebusites contemptuously as blind men, to be torn from their battlements.. The Jebusites retorted (verse 7) by telling David that he would not make his way in until he had rid himself of blind and lame men; by which it seems they meant his own troops, since we are told at the end of verse 8, ‘That is why they said, The blind and the lame shall not make their way into the house’. The Latin version treats the remark as a proverbial saying, and gives ‘temple’ instead of ‘house’; but the Hebrew text does not necessarily imply this. Some think the reference in verse 8 is not to a gutter, but to a conduit controlling the water-supply of the city.
