1 καὶ ἔστησεν κύριος τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ ὃν ἐλάλησεν ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς δικαστὰς ἡμῶν τοὺς δικάσαντας τὸν Ισραηλ καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς βασιλεῖς ἡμῶν καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας ἡμῶν καὶ ἐπὶ ἄνθρωπον Ισραηλ καὶ Ιουδα 2 οὐκ ἐποιήθη ὑποκάτω παντὸς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καθὰ ἐποίησεν ἐν Ιερουσαλημ κατὰ τὰ γεγραμμένα ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Μωυσῆ 3 τοῦ φαγεῖν ἡμᾶς ἄνθρωπον σάρκας υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἄνθρωπον σάρκας θυγατρὸς αὐτοῦ 4 καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτοὺς ὑποχειρίους πάσαις ταῖς βασιλείαις ταῖς κύκλῳ ἡμῶν εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν καὶ εἰς ἄβατον ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς λαοῖς τοῖς κύκλῳ οὗ διέσπειρεν αὐτοὺς κύριος ἐκεῖ 5 καὶ ἐγενήθησαν ὑποκάτω καὶ οὐκ ἐπάνω ὅτι ἡμάρτομεν κυρίῳ θεῷ ἡμῶν πρὸς τὸ μὴ ἀκούειν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ 6 τῷ κυρίῳ θεῷ ἡμῶν ἡ δικαιοσύνη ἡμῖν δὲ καὶ τοῖς πατράσιν ἡμῶν ἡ αἰσχύνη τῶν προσώπων ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη 7 ἃ ἐλάλησεν κύριος ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς πάντα τὰ κακὰ ταῦτα ἦλθεν ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς 8 καὶ οὐκ ἐδεήθημεν τοῦ προσώπου κυρίου τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι ἕκαστον ἀπὸ τῶν νοημάτων τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν τῆς πονηρᾶς 9 καὶ ἐγρηγόρησεν κύριος ἐπὶ τοῖς κακοῖς καὶ ἐπήγαγε κύριος ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς ὅτι δίκαιος ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ ἃ ἐνετείλατο ἡμῖν 10 καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσαμεν τῆς φωνῆς αὐτοῦ πορεύεσθαι τοῖς προστάγμασιν κυρίου οἷς ἔδωκεν κατὰ πρόσωπον ἡμῶν

1 That is why the Lord our God has made good his threats against us; against the rulers of Israel, whether kings or nobles, and against the common folk of Israel and Juda. 2 Here was a threat made in the law of Moses, that went beyond all hitherto seen on earth, and yet in Jerusalem it came true; 3 that men would be eating the flesh of their own sons and daughters! 4 Neighbouring kings had the mastery, and in all the far countries to which the Lord had banished us, we became a thing of scorn and horror. 5 Slaves are we, that might have ruled; and the reason of it? Because by sinning we offended the Lord our God, and left his voice unheeded; 6 his was never the fault; for us and for our fathers the blush of shame, as this day can witness. 7 No calamity has befallen us but he, the Lord, had prophesied it; 8 and still we would not sue for the divine mercy, but each of us went on straying by false paths. 9 That is why the Lord’s jealous care was for our undoing; he has but fulfilled what he threatened; in all he has imposed upon us,[1] the Lord our God is without fault. 10 It was our fault if we would not listen to his warnings, would not follow the divine commands which he set before us.

quod locutus est ad nos,
et ad judices nostros qui judicaverunt Israël,
et ad reges nostros, et ad principes nostros,
et ad omnem Israël et Juda: 2
ut adduceret Dominus super nos mala magna,
quæ non sunt facta sub cælo
quemadmodum facta sunt in Jerusalem,
secundum quæ scripta sunt in lege Moysi, 3
et manducaret homo carnes filii sui et carnes filiæ suæ. 4
Et dedit eos sub manu regum omnium qui sunt in circuitu nostro,
in improperium et in desolationem in omnibus populis
in quibus nos dispersit Dominus: 5
et facti sumus subtus, et non supra,
quia peccavimus Domino Deo nostro,
non obaudiendo voci ipsius. 6
Domino Deo nostro justitia,
nobis autem et patribus nostris confusio faciei,
sicut est dies hæc: 7
quia locutus est Dominus super nos omnia mala hæc
quæ venerunt super nos: 8
et non sumus deprecati faciem Domini Dei nostri,
ut reverteremur unusquisque nostrum a viis nostris pessimis. 9
Et vigilavit Dominus in malis,
et adduxit ea super nos:
quia justus est Dominus in omnibus operibus suis
quæ mandavit nobis, 10
et non audivimus vocem ipsius
ut iremus in præceptis Domini,
quæ dedit ante faciem nostram.

11 καὶ νῦν κύριε ὁ θεὸς Ισραηλ ὃς ἐξήγαγες τὸν λαόν σου ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου ἐν χειρὶ κραταιᾷ καὶ ἐν σημείοις καὶ ἐν τέρασιν καὶ ἐν δυνάμει μεγάλῃ καὶ ἐν βραχίονι ὑψηλῷ καὶ ἐποίησας σεαυτῷ ὄνομα ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη 12 ἡμάρτομεν ἠσεβήσαμεν ἠδικήσαμεν κύριε ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν ἐπὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς δικαιώμασίν σου 13 ἀποστραφήτω ὁ θυμός σου ἀ{F'} ἡμῶν ὅτι κατελείφθημεν ὀλίγοι ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν οὗ διέσπειρας ἡμᾶς ἐκεῖ 14 εἰσάκουσον κύριε τῆς προσευχῆς ἡμῶν καὶ τῆς δεήσεως ἡμῶν καὶ ἐξελοῦ ἡμᾶς ἕνεκεν σοῦ καὶ δὸς ἡμῖν χάριν κατὰ πρόσωπον τῶν ἀποικισάντων ἡμᾶς 15 ἵνα γνῷ πᾶσα ἡ γῆ ὅτι σὺ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν ὅτι τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐπεκλήθη ἐπὶ Ισραηλ καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ γένος αὐτοῦ 16 κύριε κάτιδε ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου τοῦ ἁγίου σου καὶ ἐννόησον εἰς ἡμᾶς κλῖνον κύριε τὸ οὖς σου καὶ ἄκουσον 17 ἄνοιξον κύριε τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς σου καὶ ἰδέ ὅτι οὐχ οἱ τεθνηκότες ἐν τῷ ᾅδῃ ὧν ἐλήμφθη τὸ πνεῦμα αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῶν σπλάγχνων αὐτῶν δώσουσιν δόξαν καὶ δικαίωμα τῷ κυρίῳ 18 ἀλλὰ ἡ ψυχὴ ἡ λυπουμένη ἐπὶ τὸ μέγεθος ὃ βαδίζει κύπτον καὶ ἀσθενοῦν καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ οἱ ἐκλείποντες καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ ἡ πεινῶσα δώσουσίν σοι δόξαν καὶ δικαιοσύνην κύριε

11 Lord God of Israel, whose constraining hand rescued thy people from Egypt with portents and wonders, with sovereign power signally manifested, and won thee renown that is thine yet, 12 we are sinners! We have wronged thee, revolted against every claim thou hast upon us. 13 But oh, would thy vengeance give over the pursuit! So wide thou hast parted us, and we are left so few. 14 Grant a hearing, Lord, to this our plaint and plea; for thy own honour, be our rescuer still, and win over the hearts of our captors; 15 prove to the whole world that thou art the Lord our God, that it was thy name Israel bore, and Israel’s race yet bears. 16 Look down upon us, Lord, from the sanctuary where thou dwellest; thine be the attentive ear, 17 the watchful eye! Once breath has left body, and a man lies in the grave, honour and devoir is none he can pay thee; 18 but let a man be downcast over his great misfortune, so that he goes bowed and tottering, dim eyes and hungry belly, there, Lord, thou shalt have the honour that is thy due.

Et nunc, Domine Deus Israël,
qui eduxisti populum tuum de terra Ægypti
in manu valida, et in signis, et in prodigiis,
et in virtute tua magna, et in brachio excelso,
et fecisti tibi nomen sicut est dies iste: 12
peccavimus, impie egimus,
inique gessimus, Domine Deus noster,
in omnibus justitiis tuis. 13
Avertatur ira tua a nobis,
quia derelicti sumus pauci inter gentes ubi dispersisti nos. 14
Exaudi, Domine, preces nostras et orationes nostras,
et educ nos propter te,
et da nobis invenire gratiam ante faciem eorum qui nos abduxerunt: 15
ut sciat omnis terra quia tu es Dominus Deus noster,
et quia nomen tuum invocatum est super Israël,
et super genus ipsius. 16
Respice, Domine, de domo sancta tua in nos,
et inclina aurem tuam, et exaudi nos. 17
Aperi oculos tuos et vide:
quia non mortui qui sunt in inferno,
quorum spiritus acceptus est a visceribus suis,
dabunt honorem et justificationem Domino: 18
sed anima quæ tristis est super magnitudine mali,
et incedit curva et infirma,
et oculi deficientes, et anima esuriens,
dat tibi gloriam et justitiam Domino.

19 ὅτι οὐκ ἐπὶ τὰ δικαιώματα τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν καὶ τῶν βασιλέων ἡμῶν ἡμεῖς καταβάλλομεν τὸν ἔλεον ἡμῶν κατὰ πρόσωπόν σου κύριε ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν 20 ὅτι ἐνῆκας τὸν θυμόν σου καὶ τὴν ὀργήν σου εἰς ἡμᾶς καθάπερ ἐλάλησας ἐν χειρὶ τῶν παίδων σου τῶν προφητῶν λέγων 21 οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος κλίνατε τὸν ὦμον ὑμῶν καὶ ἐργάσασθε τῷ βασιλεῖ Βαβυλῶνος καὶ καθίσατε ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἣν ἔδωκα τοῖς πατράσιν ὑμῶν 22 καὶ ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσητε τῆς φωνῆς κυρίου ἐργάσασθαι τῷ βασιλεῖ Βαβυλῶνος 23 ἐκλείψειν ποιήσω ἐκ πόλεων Ιουδα καὶ ἔξωθεν Ιερουσαλημ φωνὴν εὐφροσύνης καὶ φωνὴν χαρμοσύνης φωνὴν νυμφίου καὶ φωνὴν νύμφης καὶ ἔσται πᾶσα ἡ γῆ εἰς ἄβατον ἀπὸ ἐνοικούντων 24 καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσαμεν τῆς φωνῆς σου ἐργάσασθαι τῷ βασιλεῖ Βαβυλῶνος καὶ ἔστησας τοὺς λόγους σου οὓς ἐλάλησας ἐν χερσὶν τῶν παίδων σου τῶν προφητῶν τοῦ ἐξενεχθῆναι τὰ ὀστᾶ βασιλέων ἡμῶν καὶ τὰ ὀστᾶ τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτῶν 25 καὶ ἰδού ἐστιν ἐξερριμμένα τῷ καύματι τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τῷ παγετῷ τῆς νυκτός καὶ ἀπεθάνοσαν ἐν πόνοις πονηροῖς ἐν λιμῷ καὶ ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ καὶ ἐν ἀποστολῇ 26 καὶ ἔθηκας τὸν οἶκον οὗ ἐπεκλήθη τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐ{P'} αὐτῷ ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα αὕτη διὰ πονηρίαν οἴκου Ισραηλ καὶ οἴκου Ιουδα

19 Well for us, O Lord our God, as we pour out our supplications for thy mercy, if we could plead that fathers of ours, kings of ours, did loyally thy will. 20 But no; thou hadst given them due warning, through those prophets that were servants of thine, before letting thy angry vengeance have its way, and the warning went unheeded.[2] 21 Bow shoulder and bow neck, said the divine voice, and be vassals to the king of Babylon; and the land I gave to your fathers shall still be your home. 22 Refuse to serve the king of Babylon at my divine bidding, and Jerusalem with her daughter cities shall mourn their loss; 23 no more the cry of joy and mirth, no more the voice of bridegroom and of bride; untrodden the whole land shall be, and uninhabited. 24 But all thy threats could not persuade them to be the king of Babylon’s vassals; thy servants prophesied in vain. And so thy threats were performed; kings of ours and fathers of ours might not rest quiet in their graves; 25 their bones were cast out to endure sun’s heat and night frost, and great anguish they endured in their deaths, from the sword, and famine, and pestilence.[3] 26 As for the temple that was the shrine of thy name, thou madest it into the thing it is this day, for Israel’s sin, for Juda’s sin.

Quia non secundum justitias patrum nostrorum
nos fundimus preces et petimus misericordiam
ante conspectum tuum, Domine Deus noster: 20
sed quia misisti iram tuam et furorem tuum super nos,
sicut locutus es in manu puerorum tuorum prophetarum,
dicens: 21
Sic dicit Dominus:
Inclinate humerum vestrum et cervicem vestram,
et opera facite regi Babylonis,
et sedebitis in terra quam dedi patribus vestris. 22
Quod si non audieritis vocem Domini Dei vestri,
operari regi Babyloniæ,
defectionem vestram faciam de civitatibus Juda,
et a foris Jerusalem, 23
et auferam a vobis vocem jucunditatis et vocem gaudii,
et vocem sponsi et vocem sponsæ,
et erit omnis terra sine vestigio ab inhabitantibus eam. 24
Et non audierunt vocem tuam,
ut operarentur regi Babylonis:
et statuisti verba tua,
quæ locutus es in manibus puerorum tuorum prophetarum,
ut transferrentur ossa regum nostrorum
et ossa patrum nostrorum de loco suo: 25
et ecce projecta sunt in calore solis et in gelu noctis,
et mortui sunt in doloribus pessimis,
in fame et in gladio, et in emissione. 26
Et posuisti templum in quo invocatum est nomen tuum in ipso
sicut hæc dies,
propter iniquitatem domus Israël et domus Juda.

27 καὶ ἐποίησας εἰς ἡμᾶς κύριε ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν κατὰ πᾶσαν ἐπιείκειάν σου καὶ κατὰ πάντα οἰκτιρμόν σου τὸν μέγαν 28 καθὰ ἐλάλησας ἐν χειρὶ παιδός σου Μωυσῆ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐντειλαμένου σου αὐτῷ γράψαι τὸν νόμον σου ἐναντίον υἱῶν Ισραηλ λέγων 29 ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσητε τῆς φωνῆς μου ἦ μὴν ἡ βόμβησις ἡ μεγάλη ἡ πολλὴ αὕτη ἀποστρέψει εἰς μικρὰν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν οὗ διασπερῶ αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ 30 ὅτι ἔγνων ὅτι οὐ μὴ ἀκούσωσίν μου ὅτι λαὸς σκληροτράχηλός ἐστιν καὶ ἐπιστρέψουσιν ἐπὶ καρδίαν αὐτῶν ἐν γῇ ἀποικισμοῦ αὐτῶν 31 καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς αὐτῶν καὶ δώσω αὐτοῖς καρδίαν καὶ ὦτα ἀκούοντα 32 καὶ αἰνέσουσίν με ἐν γῇ ἀποικισμοῦ αὐτῶν καὶ μνησθήσονται τοῦ ὀνόματός μου 33 καὶ ἀποστρέψουσιν ἀπὸ τοῦ νώτου αὐτῶν τοῦ σκληροῦ καὶ ἀπὸ πονηρῶν πραγμάτων αὐτῶν ὅτι μνησθήσονται τῆς ὁδοῦ πατέρων αὐτῶν τῶν ἁμαρτόντων ἔναντι κυρίου 34 καὶ ἀποστρέψω αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν ὤμοσα τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν τῷ Αβρααμ καὶ τῷ Ισαακ καὶ τῷ Ιακωβ καὶ κυριεύσουσιν αὐτῆς καὶ πληθυνῶ αὐτούς καὶ οὐ μὴ σμικρυνθῶσιν 35 καὶ στήσω αὐτοῖς διαθήκην αἰώνιον τοῦ εἶναί με αὐτοῖς εἰς θεὸν καὶ αὐτοὶ ἔσονταί μοι εἰς λαόν καὶ οὐ κινήσω ἔτι τὸν λαόν μου Ισραηλ ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς ἧς ἔδωκα αὐτοῖς

27 No greater proof we could have had of thy consideration, of that abundant mercy[4] which is thine. 28 And merciful was the promise thou didst make to thy servant Moses, when thou badest him write down thy law for Israel’s acceptance. 29 Out of all this swarming multitude, thou didst say to him, what a sorry remnant of scattered exiles will be left, if my voice goes unheeded! 30 And go unheeded it will; this is a race that ever spurns the yoke. What then if they come back to a right mind, there in the country of their banishment? 31 What if they learn to recognize that I, the Lord, am their God (the heedful heart, the listening ear, are mine to give them); 32 what if they remember to honour me, to invoke my name, in their exile? 33 What if they follow the example of their fathers, that were sinners before them, repent of their stubborn indifference and of all their ill doings? 34 Then they shall come home again; back to the country I promised to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; they shall be masters of it, and their dwindled strength shall thrive anew. 35 A fresh covenant I will make with them, that shall last for ever; I their God, and they my people; never again will I banish my people, the sons of Israel, from the land I have made theirs.

dicens: Si non audieritis vocem meam,
multitudo hæc magna convertetur in minimam inter gentes,
quo ego eos dispergam: 30
quia scio quod me non audiet populus:
populus est enim dura cervice.
Et convertetur ad cor suum in terra captivitatis suæ, 31
et scient quia ego sum Dominus Deus eorum:
et dabo eis cor, et intelligent;
aures, et audient: 32
et laudabunt me in terra captivitatis suæ,
et memores erunt nominis mei, 33
et avertent se a dorso suo duro,
et a malignitatibus suis:
quia reminiscentur viam patrum suorum,
qui peccaverunt in me. 34
Et revocabo illos in terram quam juravi patribus eorum,
Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob:
et dominabuntur ejus, et multiplicabo eos,
et non minorabuntur: 35
et statuam illis testamentum alterum sempiternum,
ut sim illis in Deum,
et ipsi erunt mihi in populum:
et non movebo amplius populum meum, filios Israël,
a terra quam dedi illis.

[1] This is usually understood of God’s commandments, but the context suggests rather a reference to his chastisements.

[2] ‘And the warning went unheeded’; these words are not in the original, but are supplied here from the context in order to make the connexion between verses 19 and 20 intelligible.

[3] The Greek word used here (of which the Latin gives a literal rendering) means ‘a despatching of envoys’, and does not justify the translation ‘banishment’. It is probably used here, as in Jer. 32.36, to represent the Hebrew word for ‘pestilence’, as something specially sent by Almighty God.

[4] In verses 19-26, the divine mercy has been shewn in the warning issued to the Jews against further resistance. In verses 27-35 the same mercy is shewn in the promise of ultimate restoration.
