1 προσευχὴ Αμβακουμ τοῦ προφήτου μετὰ ᾠδῆς

1 A prayer of the prophet Habacuc for Shigionoth.[1]

1 Oratio Habacuc prophetæ, pro ignorantiis.

2 κύριε εἰσακήκοα τὴν ἀκοήν σου καὶ ἐφοβήθην κατενόησα τὰ ἔργα σου καὶ ἐξέστην ἐν μέσῳ δύο ζῴων γνωσθήσῃ ἐν τῷ ἐγγίζειν τὰ ἔτη ἐπιγνωσθήσῃ ἐν τῷ παρεῖναι τὸν καιρὸν ἀναδειχθήσῃ ἐν τῷ ταραχθῆναι τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐν ὀργῇ ἐλέους μνησθήσῃ 3 ὁ θεὸς ἐκ Θαιμαν ἥξει καὶ ὁ ἅγιος ἐξ ὄρους κατασκίου δασέος διάψαλμα ἐκάλυψεν οὐρανοὺς ἡ ἀρετὴ αὐτοῦ καὶ αἰνέσεως αὐτοῦ πλήρης ἡ γῆ 4 καὶ φέγγος αὐτοῦ ὡς φῶς ἔσται κέρατα ἐν χερσὶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθετο ἀγάπησιν κραταιὰν ἰσχύος αὐτοῦ 5 πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ πορεύσεται λόγος καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ἐν πεδίλοις οἱ πόδες αὐτοῦ 6 ἔστη καὶ ἐσαλεύθη ἡ γῆ ἐπέβλεψεν καὶ διετάκη ἔθνη διεθρύβη τὰ ὄρη βίᾳ ἐτάκησαν βουνοὶ αἰώνιοι 7 πορείας αἰωνίας αὐτοῦ ἀντὶ κόπων εἶδον σκηνώματα Αἰθιόπων πτοηθήσονται καὶ αἱ σκηναὶ γῆς Μαδιαμ

2 I have heard, Lord, the tale of thy renown, awe-stricken at the divine power thou hast. Reveal that power in these latter days, in these latter days make it known once more! And though we have earned thy anger, bethink thee of mercy still. 3 God coming near from Teman, the holy One from yonder hills of Pharan! See how his glory overspreads heaven, his fame echoes through the earth; 4 the brightness that is his, like light itself, the rays that stream from his hand, masking its strength; 5 pestilence his outrider, the wasting sickness[2] in his train! 6 There stood he, and scanned the earth; at his look, the nations were adread; melted were the everlasting mountains, bowed were the ancient hills, his own immemorial pathway, as he journeyed. 7 I saw the Ethiop quail in his tent,[3] the dwellings of Madian astir with terror.

in medio annorum notum facies:
cum iratus fueris, misericordiæ recordaberis. 3
Deus ab austro veniet,
et Sanctus de monte Pharan:
operuit cælos gloria ejus,
et laudis ejus plena est terra. 4
Splendor ejus ut lux erit,
cornua in manibus ejus:
ibi abscondita est fortitudo ejus. 5
Ante faciem ejus ibit mors,
et egredietur diabolus ante pedes ejus. 6
Stetit, et mensus est terram;
aspexit, et dissolvit gentes,
et contriti sunt montes sæculi:
incurvati sunt colles mundi ab itineribus æternitatis ejus. 7
Pro iniquitate vidi tentoria Æthiopiæ;
turbabuntur pelles terræ Madian.

8 μὴ ἐν ποταμοῖς ὠργίσθης κύριε ἢ ἐν ποταμοῖς ὁ θυμός σου ἢ ἐν θαλάσσῃ τὸ ὅρμημά σου ὅτι ἐπιβήσῃ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἵππους σου καὶ ἡ ἱππασία σου σωτηρία 9 ἐντείνων ἐντενεῖς τὸ τόξον σου ἐπὶ τὰ σκῆπτρα λέγει κύριος διάψαλμα ποταμῶν ῥαγήσεται γῆ 10 ὄψονταί σε καὶ ὠδινήσουσιν λαοί σκορπίζων ὕδατα πορείας αὐτοῦ ἔδωκεν ἡ ἄβυσσος φωνὴν αὐτῆς ὕψος φαντασίας αὐτῆς 11 ἐπήρθη ὁ ἥλιος καὶ ἡ σελήνη ἔστη ἐν τῇ τάξει αὐτῆς εἰς φῶς βολίδες σου πορεύσονται εἰς φέγγος ἀστραπῆς ὅπλων σου

8 Is it the rivers, Lord, that have awaked thy anger; should it be the rivers? Or has the sea earned thy vengeance, that thou comest thus mounted on thy horses, on thy victorious chariot; 9 that bow of thine brought into full play, which grants to Israel the assurance of thy succour?[4] Earth is torn into ravines; 10 the mountains tremble at the sight. Fierce falls the rain-storm, the depths beneath us roar aloud, the heights beckon from above; 11 sun and moon linger in their dwelling-place;[5] so bright thy arrows volley, with such sheen of lightning glances thy spear.

Numquid in fluminibus iratus es, Domine?
aut in fluminibus furor tuus?
vel in mari indignatio tua?
Qui ascendes super equos tuos, et quadrigæ tuæ salvatio. 9
Suscitans suscitabis arcum tuum,
juramenta tribubus quæ locutus es;
fluvios scindes terræ. 10
Viderunt te, et doluerunt montes;
gurges aquarum transiit:
dedit abyssus vocem suam;
altitudo manus suas levavit. 11
Sol et luna steterunt in habitaculo suo:
in luce sagittarum tuarum ibunt,
in splendore fulgurantis hastæ tuæ.

12 ἐν ἀπειλῇ ὀλιγώσεις γῆν καὶ ἐν θυμῷ κατάξεις ἔθνη 13 ἐξῆλθες εἰς σωτηρίαν λαοῦ σου τοῦ σῶσαι τοὺς χριστούς σου ἔβαλες εἰς κεφαλὰς ἀνόμων θάνατον ἐξήγειρας δεσμοὺς ἕως τραχήλου διάψαλμα 14 διέκοψας ἐν ἐκστάσει κεφαλὰς δυναστῶν σεισθήσονται ἐν αὐτῇ διανοίξουσιν χαλινοὺς αὐτῶν ὡς ἔσθων πτωχὸς λάθρᾳ 15 καὶ ἐπεβίβασας εἰς θάλασσαν τοὺς ἵππους σου ταράσσοντας ὕδωρ πολύ

12 Nay, if thou ride through the world so angrily, with thy disdain striking the nations dumb, 13 it is to rescue thy own people, rescue thy own anointed servant, that thou goest out to battle. Down fall the turrets in yonder castle of godlessness, down sink the foundations to their very base; 14 lights thy ban on its princes, on the heads of its warriors, whose blustering rage would overthrow me, confident now as some petty tyrant who oppresses the poor in secret. 15 Over the sea, over the ooze beneath its waves, thou hast made a path for thy horses to tread.

Egressus es in salutem populi tui,
in salutem cum christo tuo:
percussisti caput de domo impii,
denudasti fundamentum ejus usque ad collum. 14
Maledixisti sceptris ejus,
capiti bellatorum ejus,
venientibus ut turbo ad dispergendum me:
exsultatio eorum, sicut ejus qui devorat pauperem in abscondito. 15
Viam fecisti in mari equis tuis,
in luto aquarum multarum.

16 ἐφυλαξάμην καὶ ἐπτοήθη ἡ κοιλία μου ἀπὸ φωνῆς προσευχῆς χειλέων μου καὶ εἰσῆλθεν τρόμος εἰς τὰ ὀστᾶ μου καὶ ὑποκάτωθέν μου ἐταράχθη ἡ ἕξις μου ἀναπαύσομαι ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θλίψεως τοῦ ἀναβῆναι εἰς λαὸν παροικίας μου 17 διότι συκῆ οὐ καρποφορήσει καὶ οὐκ ἔσται γενήματα ἐν ταῖς ἀμπέλοις ψεύσεται ἔργον ἐλαίας καὶ τὰ πεδία οὐ ποιήσει βρῶσιν ἐξέλιπον ἀπὸ βρώσεως πρόβατα καὶ οὐχ ὑπάρχουσιν βόες ἐπὶ φάτναις 18 ἐγὼ δὲ ἐν τῷ κυρίῳ ἀγαλλιάσομαι χαρήσομαι ἐπὶ τῷ θεῷ τῷ σωτῆρί μου 19 κύριος ὁ θεὸς δύναμίς μου καὶ τάξει τοὺς πόδας μου εἰς συντέλειαν ἐπὶ τὰ ὑψηλὰ ἐπιβιβᾷ με τοῦ νικῆσαι ἐν τῇ ᾠδῇ αὐτοῦ

16 Such was the tale that set my whole frame trembling; at the rumour of it my lips quivered with fear; there was a faintness overcame my whole being, my steps faltered as I went. Now with tranquil heart let me await this day of doom; upon the enemies of our people it is destined to fall.[6] 17 What though the fig-tree never bud, the vine yield no fruit, the olive fail, the fields bear no harvest; what though our folds stand empty of sheep, our byres of cattle? 18 Still will I make my boast in the Lord, triumph in the deliverance God sends me. 19 The Lord, the ruler of all, is my stronghold; he will bring me safely on my way, safe as the hind whose feet echo already on the hills.

Audivi, et conturbatus est venter meus;
a voce contremuerunt labia mea.
Ingrediatur putredo in ossibus meis,
et subter me scateat:
ut requiescam in die tribulationis,
ut ascendam ad populum accinctum nostrum. 17
Ficus enim non florebit,
et non erit germen in vineis;
mentietur opus olivæ,
et arva non afferent cibum:
abscindetur de ovili pecus,
et non erit armentum in præsepibus. 18
Ego autem in Domino gaudebo;
et exsultabo in Deo Jesu meo. 19
Deus Dominus fortitudo mea,
et ponet pedes meos quasi cervorum:
et super excelsa mea deducet me
victor in psalmis canentem.

[1] ‘For Shigionoth’ appears to be a musical direction, of uncertain meaning. The Vulgate Latin renders ‘for faults of inadvertence’.

[2] ‘The wasting sickness’; this is the rendering of the new Latin Psalter; the Vulgate Latin translates, ‘the devil’.

[3] Literally, ‘the tents of Ethiopia under affliction’. The Vulgate gives a less probable rendering, ‘the tents of Ethiopia (requited) for their guilt’.

[4] ‘Which grants to Israel the assurance of thy succour’; literally, ‘the promises which thou hast made to the tribes’, see Gen. 49.24. The new Latin Psalter has ‘thy quiver so full of arrows’, a reading based on certain manuscripts of the Septuagint Greek.

[5] ‘The heights beckon from above; sun and moon linger in their dwelling-place’; the new Latin Psalter reads (with certain manuscripts of the Septuagint Greek) ‘the sun forgets to dawn in splendour, the moon lingers in her bower’.

[6] This is the rendering given by the new Latin Psalter; no satisfactory sense is offered by the Vulgate here: ‘Let rottenness enter into my bones, and fester beneath me, that I may have rest in the day of affliction, that I may go up to this people of ours which is girded for battle’.

[7] The musical direction here printed in brackets is omitted in the new Latin Psalter; the Vulgate has confused it with the text of the canticle.
