1 καὶ λαβόντες οἱ δύο υἱοὶ Ααρων Ναδαβ καὶ Αβιουδ ἕκαστος τὸ πυρεῖον αὐτοῦ ἐπέθηκαν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ πῦρ καὶ ἐπέβαλον ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ θυμίαμα καὶ προσήνεγκαν ἔναντι κυρίου πῦρ ἀλλότριον ὃ οὐ προσέταξεν κύριος αὐτοῖς 2 καὶ ἐξῆλθεν πῦρ παρὰ κυρίου καὶ κατέφαγεν αὐτούς καὶ ἀπέθανον ἔναντι κυρίου 3 καὶ εἶπεν Μωυσῆς πρὸς Ααρων τοῦτό ἐστιν ὃ εἶπεν κύριος λέγων ἐν τοῖς ἐγγίζουσίν μοι ἁγιασθήσομαι καὶ ἐν πάσῃ τῇ συναγωγῇ δοξασθήσομαι καὶ κατενύχθη Ααρων 4 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Μωυσῆς τὸν Μισαδαι καὶ τὸν Ελισαφαν υἱοὺς Οζιηλ υἱοὺς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ τοῦ πατρὸς Ααρων καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς προσέλθατε καὶ ἄρατε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν ἐκ προσώπου τῶν ἁγίων ἔξω τῆς παρεμβολῆς 5 καὶ προσῆλθον καὶ ἦραν ἐν τοῖς χιτῶσιν αὐτῶν ἔξω τῆς παρεμβολῆς ὃν τρόπον εἶπεν Μωυσῆς 6 καὶ εἶπεν Μωυσῆς πρὸς Ααρων καὶ Ελεαζαρ καὶ Ιθαμαρ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ τοὺς καταλελειμμένους τὴν κεφαλὴν ὑμῶν οὐκ ἀποκιδαρώσετε καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια ὑμῶν οὐ διαρρήξετε ἵνα μὴ ἀποθάνητε καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν συναγωγὴν ἔσται θυμός οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ὑμῶν πᾶς ὁ οἶκος Ισραηλ κλαύσονται τὸν ἐμπυρισμόν ὃν ἐνεπυρίσθησαν ὑπὸ κυρίου 7 καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς θύρας τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου οὐκ ἐξελεύσεσθε ἵνα μὴ ἀποθάνητε τὸ γὰρ ἔλαιον τῆς χρίσεως τὸ παρὰ κυρίου ἐ{F'} ὑμῖν καὶ ἐποίησαν κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμα Μωυσῆ

1 There were two of Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abiu, who took up their censers and put coals and incense into them, to burn unhallowed fire in the Lord’s presence,[1] not in accordance with his command; 2 whereupon the Lord sent down fire which devoured them, and they died there in the Lord’s presence. 3 And Moses told Aaron, The Lord gave us warning of this when he said: I mean to vindicate my holiness among those who come near me, win reverence in the eyes of the whole people. And with that, Aaron kept silence. 4 Meanwhile, Moses summoned Misael and Elisaphan, sons of Oziel that was Aaron’s uncle, and said to them, Go and remove the bodies of your brethren from the tabernacle door, and carry them away from the camp. 5 So they went without more ado and took them up just as they lay there, still clothed in their robes of linen; and they carried them away as he bade them. 6 Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, Do not bare your heads or rend your garments, on pain of death, and such vengeance as may overtake the whole people; let your brethren, and all the race of Israel bewail this fresh kindling of the Lord’s fire. 7 You must not, on pain of death, leave the tabernacle door, with the oil of your consecration still upon you. So they did as Moses bade them.

1 Arreptisque Nadab et Abiu filii Aaron thuribulis, posuerunt ignem, et incensum desuper, offerentes coram Domino ignem alienum: quod eis præceptum non erat. 2 Egressusque ignis a Domino, devoravit eos, et mortui sunt coram Domino. 3 Dixitque Moyses ad Aaron: Hoc est quod locutus est Dominus: Sanctificabor in iis qui appropinquant mihi, et in conspectu omnis populi glorificabor. Quod audiens tacuit Aaron. 4 Vocatis autem Moyses Misaële et Elisaphan filiis Oziel, patrui Aaron, ait ad eos: Ite, et tollite fratres vestros de conspectu sanctuarii, et asportate extra castra. 5 Confestimque pergentes, tulerunt eos sicut jacebant, vestitos lineis tunicis, et ejecerunt foras, ut sibi fuerat imperatum. 6 Locutusque est Moyses ad Aaron, et ad Eleazar, et Ithamar, filios ejus: Capita vestra nolite nudare, et vestimenta nolite scindere, ne forte moriamini, et super omnem cœtum oriatur indignatio. Fratres vestri, et omnis domus Israël, plangant incendium quod Dominus suscitavit: 7 vos autem non egrediemini fores tabernaculi, alioquin peribitis: oleum quippe sanctæ unctionis est super vos. Qui fecerunt omnia juxta præceptum Moysi.

8 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος τῷ Ααρων λέγων 9 οἶνον καὶ σικερα οὐ πίεσθε σὺ καὶ οἱ υἱοί σου μετὰ σοῦ ἡνίκα ἂν εἰσπορεύησθε εἰς τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου ἢ προσπορευομένων ὑμῶν πρὸς τὸ θυσιαστήριον καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνητε νόμιμον αἰώνιον εἰς τὰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν 10 διαστεῖλαι ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ἁγίων καὶ τῶν βεβήλων καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ἀκαθάρτων καὶ τῶν καθαρῶν 11 καὶ συμβιβάσεις τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ πάντα τὰ νόμιμα ἃ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς αὐτοὺς διὰ χειρὸς Μωυσῆ

8 The Lord, too, said to Aaron, 9 When you are for entering the tabernacle, thou and thy sons, drink neither wine nor strong drink, on pain of death; such is the commandment you must observe, age after age. 10 It is your task to distinguish between what is holy and what is profane, what is defiled and what is clean; 11 and to teach the sons of Israel all these commandments of mine, the Lord’s word to them through Moses.

8 Dixit quoque Dominus ad Aaron: 9 Vinum, et omne quod inebriare potest, non bibetis tu et filii tui, quando intratis in tabernaculum testimonii, ne moriamini: quia præceptum sempiternum est in generationes vestras: 10 et ut habeatis scientiam discernendi inter sanctum et profanum, inter pollutum et mundum; 11 doceatisque filios Israël omnia legitima mea quæ locutus est Dominus ad eos per manum Moysi.

12 καὶ εἶπεν Μωυσῆς πρὸς Ααρων καὶ πρὸς Ελεαζαρ καὶ Ιθαμαρ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ααρων τοὺς καταλειφθέντας λάβετε τὴν θυσίαν τὴν καταλειφθεῖσαν ἀπὸ τῶν καρπωμάτων κυρίου καὶ φάγεσθε ἄζυμα παρὰ τὸ θυσιαστήριον ἅγια ἁγίων ἐστίν 13 καὶ φάγεσθε αὐτὴν ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ νόμιμον γάρ σοί ἐστιν καὶ νόμιμον τοῖς υἱοῖς σου τοῦτο ἀπὸ τῶν καρπωμάτων κυρίου οὕτω γὰρ ἐντέταλταί μοι 14 καὶ τὸ στηθύνιον τοῦ ἀφορίσματος καὶ τὸν βραχίονα τοῦ ἀφαιρέματος φάγεσθε ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ σὺ καὶ οἱ υἱοί σου καὶ ὁ οἶκός σου μετὰ σοῦ νόμιμον γὰρ σοὶ καὶ νόμιμον τοῖς υἱοῖς σου ἐδόθη ἀπὸ τῶν θυσιῶν τοῦ σωτηρίου τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ 15 τὸν βραχίονα τοῦ ἀφαιρέματος καὶ τὸ στηθύνιον τοῦ ἀφορίσματος ἐπὶ τῶν καρπωμάτων τῶν στεάτων προσοίσουσιν ἀφόρισμα ἀφορίσαι ἔναντι κυρίου καὶ ἔσται σοὶ καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς σου καὶ ταῖς θυγατράσιν σου μετὰ σοῦ νόμιμον αἰώνιον ὃν τρόπον συνέταξεν κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ

12 And now Moses said to Aaron, and to his surviving sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, You must take up what is left of the bloodless sacrifice offered to the Lord, and eat it, still unleavened, near the altar; it is set apart for holy uses, 13 and on holy ground it must be eaten, as the share given to thee and to thy sons in the Lord’s own offering; such was the Divine command. 14 The breast, too, that was held up in worship, and the shoulder that was set apart, you must eat in a place that is clean of all defilement, thou and thy sons and thy daughters, too, with thee. This share of the welcome-offerings the sons of Israel bring is kept for thee and thy children; 15 priestly hands have lifted up, in the Lord’s presence, the shoulder and the breast and the fat which was afterwards burnt on the altar, and it is the Lord’s bidding that they should belong to thee and thy sons, by right perpetual.

12 Locutusque est Moyses ad Aaron, et ad Eleazar, et Ithamar, filios ejus, qui erant residui: Tollite sacrificium, quod remansit de oblatione Domini, et comedite illud absque fermento juxta altare, quia Sanctum sanctorum est. 13 Comedetis autem in loco sancto: quod datum est tibi et filiis tuis de oblationibus Domini, sicut præceptum est mihi. 14 Pectusculum quoque quod oblatum est, et armum qui separatus est, edetis in loco mundissimo tu et filii tui, et filiæ tuæ tecum: tibi enim ac liberis tuis reposita sunt de hostiis salutaribus filiorum Israël: 15 eo quod armum et pectus, et adipes qui cremantur in altari, elevaverunt coram Domino, et pertineant ad te, et ad filios tuos, lege perpetua, sicut præcepit Dominus.

16 καὶ τὸν χίμαρον τὸν περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας ζητῶν ἐξεζήτησεν Μωυσῆς καὶ ὅδε ἐνεπεπύριστο καὶ ἐθυμώθη Μωυσῆς ἐπὶ Ελεαζαρ καὶ Ιθαμαρ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ααρων τοὺς καταλελειμμένους λέγων 17 διὰ τί οὐκ ἐφάγετε τὸ περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ ὅτι γὰρ ἅγια ἁγίων ἐστίν τοῦτο ἔδωκεν ὑμῖν φαγεῖν ἵνα ἀφέλητε τὴν ἁμαρτίαν τῆς συναγωγῆς καὶ ἐξιλάσησθε περὶ αὐτῶν ἔναντι κυρίου 18 οὐ γὰρ εἰσήχθη τοῦ αἵματος αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ ἅγιον κατὰ πρόσωπον ἔσω φάγεσθε αὐτὸ ἐν τόπῳ ἁγίῳ ὃν τρόπον μοι συνέταξεν κύριος 19 καὶ ἐλάλησεν Ααρων πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων εἰ σήμερον προσαγειόχασιν τὰ περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ ὁλοκαυτώματα αὐτῶν ἔναντι κυρίου καὶ συμβέβηκέν μοι ταῦτα καὶ φάγομαι τὰ περὶ τῆς ἁμαρτίας σήμερον μὴ ἀρεστὸν ἔσται κυρίῳ 20 καὶ ἤκουσεν Μωυσῆς καὶ ἤρεσεν αὐτῷ

16 Meanwhile, when Moses went to look for the goat that was their transgression-victim, he found its body all consumed by fire, and angered by this, he asked Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s two surviving sons, 17 Why did you not eat, on holy ground, this transgression-victim, all holiness, which was handed over to you so that you might take the faults of the people on yourselves, and make intercession for them in the Lord’s presence? 18 Its blood had not been carried within the sanctuary; you should have eaten it on holy ground, in obedience to the commandment that was given me. 19 But Aaron’s answer was, Why, this very day transgression-victim and burnt-sacrifice have been offered to the Lord, and thou seest what has befallen me in spite of it. How could I find acceptance with the Lord in eating my share of it, with a heart so mournful? 20 And with that, Moses was content.[2]

16 Inter hæc, hircum, qui oblatus fuerat pro peccato, cum quæreret Moyses, exustum reperit: iratusque contra Eleazar et Ithamar filios Aaron, qui remanserant, ait: 17 Cur non comedistis hostiam pro peccato in loco sancto, quæ Sancta sanctorum est, et data vobis ut portetis iniquitatem multitudinis, et rogetis pro ea in conspectu Domini, 18 præsertim cum de sanguine illius non sit illatum intra sancta, et comedere debueritis eam in Sanctuario, sicut præceptum est mihi? 19 Respondit Aaron: Oblata est hodie victima pro peccato, et holocaustum coram Domino: mihi autem accidit quod vides; quomodo potui comedere eam, aut placere Domino in cæremoniis mente lugubri? 20 Quod cum audisset Moyses, recepit satisfactionem.

[1] ‘Unhallowed’; literally ‘foreign’. It is clear that the two priests offended by some act of contumacious disobedience, but the exact nature of their offence remains doubtful. Some think they had neglected the command given in Ex. 30.9 (where the literal meaning of the Hebrew is ‘foreign incense’); others, that they ought to have lighted their censers from the holy fire on the altar.

[2] The offering made in 9.15 above was not that ordinarily made for the faults of the whole congregation, a bullock whose blood was sprinkled before the veil in the sanctuary (4.16) and whose flesh was not eaten but burnt (6.30). On this special occasion of Aaron’s hallowing, the people offered what was ordinarily the transgression-victim for a ruler, a goat whose blood was only smeared on the altar of burnt-sacrifice (4.25), and whose flesh should therefore have been dealt with on the general principle laid down in 6.25. Aaron explains that he and his sons burnt the goat’s flesh because they had no heart to eat it. The words ‘with a heart so mournful’ are not in the Hebrew text.
