1 Ὁμοία γάρ ἐστιν ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ οἰκοδεσπότῃ ὅστις ἐξῆλθεν ἅμα πρωῒ μισθώσασθαι ἐργάτας εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ. 2 συμφωνήσας δὲ μετὰ τῶν ἐργατῶν ἐκ δηναρίου τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα αὐτοῦ. 3 καὶ ἐξελθὼν περὶ τρίτην ὥραν εἶδεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας ἐν τῇ ἀγορᾷ ἀργούς, 4 καὶ ἐκείνοις εἶπεν: ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα, καὶ ὃ ἐὰν ᾖ δίκαιον δώσω ὑμῖν. 5 οἱ δὲ ἀπῆλθον. πάλιν δὲ ἐξελθὼν περὶ ἕκτην καὶ ἐνάτην ὥραν ἐποίησεν ὡσαύτως. 6 περὶ δὲ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ἐξελθὼν εὗρεν ἄλλους ἑστῶτας, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς: τί ὧδε ἑστήκατε ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀργοί; 7 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: ὅτι οὐδεὶς ἡμᾶς ἐμισθώσατο. λέγει αὐτοῖς: ὑπάγετε καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν ἀμπελῶνα.

1 Here is an image of the kingdom of heaven; a rich man went out at day-break to hire labourers for work in his vineyard; 2 and when he sent them out into his vineyard he agreed with the labourers on a silver piece for the day’s wages. 3 About the third hour he came out again, and found others standing idle in the market-place; 4 and to these also he said, Away with you to the vineyard like the others; you shall have whatever payment is fair. 5 Away they went; and at noon, and once more at the ninth hour, he came out and did the like. 6 Yet he found others standing there when he came out at the eleventh hour; How is it, he said to them, that you are standing here, and have done nothing all the day? 7 They told him, It is because nobody has hired us; and he said, Away with you to the vineyard like the rest.

1 Simile est regnum cælorum homini patrifamilias, qui exiit primo mane conducere operarios in vineam suam. 2 Conventione autem facta cum operariis ex denario diurno, misit eos in vineam suam. 3 Et egressus circa horam tertiam, vidit alios stantes in foro otiosos, 4 et dixit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam, et quod justum fuerit dabo vobis. 5 Illi autem abierunt. Iterum autem exiit circa sextam et nonam horam: et fecit similiter. 6 Circa undecimam vero exiit, et invenit alios stantes, et dicit illis: Quid hic statis tota die otiosi? 7 Dicunt ei: Quia nemo nos conduxit. Dicit illis: Ite et vos in vineam meam.

8 ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης λέγει ὁ κύριος τοῦ ἀμπελῶνος τῷ ἐπιτρόπῳ αὐτοῦ: κάλεσον τοὺς ἐργάτας καὶ ἀπόδος αὐτοῖς τὸν μισθὸν ἀρξάμενος ἀπὸ τῶν ἐσχάτων ἕως τῶν πρώτων. 9 καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ περὶ τὴν ἑνδεκάτην ὥραν ἔλαβον ἀνὰ δηνάριον. 10 καὶ ἐλθόντες οἱ πρῶτοι ἐνόμισαν ὅτι πλεῖον λήμψονται: καὶ ἔλαβον τὸ ἀνὰ δηνάριον καὶ αὐτοί. 11 λαβόντες δὲ ἐγόγγυζον κατὰ τοῦ οἰκοδεσπότου 12 λέγοντες: οὗτοι οἱ ἔσχατοι μίαν ὥραν ἐποίησαν, καὶ ἴσους ἡμῖν αὐτοὺς ἐποίησας τοῖς βαστάσασι τὸ βάρος τῆς ἡμέρας καὶ τὸν καύσωνα. 13 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς ἑνὶ αὐτῶν εἶπεν: ἑταῖρε, οὐκ ἀδικῶ σε: οὐχὶ δηναρίου συνεφώνησάς μοι; 14 ἆρον τὸ σὸν καὶ ὕπαγε. θέλω δὲ τούτῳ τῷ ἐσχάτῳ δοῦναι ὡς καὶ σοί: 15 ἢ οὐκ ἔξεστίν μοι ὃ θέλω ποιῆσαι ἐν τοῖς ἐμοῖς; ἢ ὁ ὀφθαλμός σου πονηρός ἐστιν ὅτι ἐγὼ ἀγαθός εἰμι; 16 οὕτως ἔσονται οἱ ἔσχατοι πρῶτοι καὶ οἱ πρῶτοι ἔσχατοι.

8 And now it was evening, and the owner of the vineyard said to his bailiff, Send for the workmen and pay them their wages, beginning with the last comers and going back to the first. 9 And so the men who were hired about the eleventh hour came forward, and each was paid a silver piece. 10 So that when the others came, who were hired first, they hoped to receive more. But they were paid a silver piece each, like their fellows. 11 And they were indignant with the rich man over their pay. 12 Here are these late-comers, they said, who have worked but one hour, and thou hast made no difference between them and us, who have borne the day’s burden and the heat. 13 But he answered one of them thus; My friend, I am not doing thee a wrong; did we not agree on a silver piece for thy wages? 14 Take what is thy due, and away with thee; it is my pleasure to give as much to this late-comer as thee. 15 Am I not free to use my money as I will? Must thou give me sour looks, because I am generous? 16 So it is that they shall be first who were last, and they shall be last who were first. Many are called, but few are chosen.

8 Cum sero autem factum esset, dicit dominus vineæ procuratori suo: Voca operarios, et redde illis mercedem incipiens a novissimis usque ad primos. 9 Cum venissent ergo qui circa undecimam horam venerant, acceperunt singulos denarios. 10 Venientes autem et primi, arbitrati sunt quod plus essent accepturi: acceperunt autem et ipsi singulos denarios. 11 Et accipientes murmurabant adversus patremfamilias, 12 dicentes: Hi novissimi una hora fecerunt, et pares illos nobis fecisti, qui portavimus pondus diei, et æstus. 13 At ille respondens uni eorum, dixit: Amice, non facio tibi injuriam: nonne ex denario convenisti mecum? 14 Tolle quod tuum est, et vade: volo autem et huic novissimo dare sicut et tibi. 15 Aut non licet mihi quod volo, facere? an oculus tuus nequam est, quia ego bonus sum? 16 Sic erunt novissimi primi, et primi novissimi. Multi enim sunt vocati, pauci vero electi.

17 Καὶ ἀναβαίνων ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παρέλαβεν τοὺς δώδεκα μαθητὰς κατ' ἰδίαν, καὶ ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς: 18 ἰδοὺ ἀναβαίνομεν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα, καὶ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου παραδοθήσεται τοῖς ἀρχιερεῦσιν καὶ γραμματεῦσιν, καὶ κατακρινοῦσιν αὐτὸν θανάτῳ. 19 καὶ παραδώσουσιν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εἰς τὸ ἐμπαῖξαι καὶ μαστιγῶσαι καὶ σταυρῶσαι, καὶ τῇ τρίτῃ ἡμέρᾳ ἐγερθήσεται. 20 Τότε προσῆλθεν αὐτῷ ἡ μήτηρ τῶν υἱῶν Ζεβεδαίου μετὰ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτῆς, προσκυνοῦσα καὶ αἰτοῦσά τι ἀπ' αὐτοῦ. 21 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ: τί θέλεις; λέγει αὐτῷ: εἰπὲ ἵνα καθίσωσιν οὗτοι οἱ δύο υἱοί μου εἷς ἐκ δεξιῶν σου καὶ εἷς ἐξ εὐωνύμων σου ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ σου. 22 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν: οὐκ οἴδατε τί αἰτεῖσθε. δύνασθε πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ὃ ἐγὼ μέλλω πίνειν; λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: δυνάμεθα. 23 λέγει αὐτοῖς: τὸ μὲν ποτήριόν μου πίεσθε, τὸ δὲ καθίσαι ἐκ δεξιῶν μου καὶ ἐξ εὐωνύμων, οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν τοῦτο δοῦναι, ἀλλ' οἷς ἡτοίμασται ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός μου. 24 καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ δέκα ἠγανάκτησαν περὶ τῶν δύο ἀδελφῶν. 25 ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς εἶπεν: οἴδατε ὅτι οἱ ἄρχοντες τῶν ἐθνῶν κατακυριεύουσιν αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ μεγάλοι κατεξουσιάζουσιν αὐτῶν. 26 οὐχ οὕτως ἔσται ἐν ὑμῖν: ἀλλ' ὃς ἐὰν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν μέγας γενέσθαι ἔσται ὑμῶν διάκονος, 27 καὶ ὃς ἂν θέλῃ ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος ἔσται ὑμῶν δοῦλος: 28 ὥσπερ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἦλθεν διακονηθῆναι, ἀλλὰ διακονῆσαι καὶ δοῦναι τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ λύτρον ἀντὶ πολλῶν.

17 And now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, and he took his twelve disciples aside on the way, and warned them, 18 Now we are going up to Jerusalem; and there the Son of Man will be given up into the hands of the chief priests and scribes, who will condemn him to death. 19 And these will give him up into the hands of the Gentiles, to be mocked and scourged and crucified; but on the third day he will rise again.[1] 20 Thereupon the mother of the sons of Zebedee brought them to him, falling on her knees to make a request of him. 21 And when he asked her, What is thy will? she said to him, Here are my two sons; grant that in thy kingdom one may take his place on thy right and the other on thy left. 22 But Jesus answered, You do not know what it is you ask. Have you strength to drink of the cup I am to drink of? They said, We have. 23 And he told them, You shall indeed drink of my cup; but a place on my right hand or my left is not mine to give; it is for those for whom my Father has destined it. 24 The ten others were angry with the two brethren when they heard it; 25 but Jesus called them to him, and said, You know that, among the Gentiles, those who bear rule lord it over them, and great men vaunt their power over them; 26 with you it must be otherwise; whoever would be a great man among you, must be your servant, 27 and whoever has a mind to be first among you, must be your slave. 28 So it is that the Son of Man did not come to have service done him; he came to serve others, and to give his life as a ransom for the lives of many.[2]

17 Et ascendens Jesus Jerosolymam, assumpsit duodecim discipulos secreto, et ait illis: 18 Ecce ascendimus Jerosolymam, et Filius hominis tradetur principibus sacerdotum, et scribis, et condemnabunt eum morte, 19 et tradent eum gentibus ad illudendum, et flagellandum, et crucifigendum, et tertia die resurget. 20 Tunc accessit ad eum mater filiorum Zebedæi cum filiis suis, adorans et petens aliquid ab eo. 21 Qui dixit ei: Quid vis? Ait illi: Dic ut sedeant hi duo filii mei, unus ad dexteram tuam, et unus ad sinistram in regno tuo. 22 Respondens autem Jesus, dixit: Nescitis quid petatis. Potestis bibere calicem, quem ego bibiturus sum? Dicunt ei: Possumus. 23 Ait illis: Calicem quidem meum bibetis: sedere autem ad dexteram meam vel sinistram non est meum dare vobis, sed quibus paratum est a Patre meo. 24 Et audientes decem, indignati sunt de duobus fratribus. 25 Jesus autem vocavit eos ad se, et ait: Scitis quia principes gentium dominantur eorum: et qui majores sunt, potestatem exercent in eos. 26 Non ita erit inter vos: sed quicumque voluerit inter vos major fieri, sit vester minister: 27 et qui voluerit inter vos primus esse, erit vester servus. 28 Sicut Filius hominis non venit ministrari, sed ministrare, et dare animam suam redemptionem pro multis.

29 Καὶ ἐκπορευομένων αὐτῶν ἀπὸ Ἰεριχὼ ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολύς. 30 καὶ ἰδοὺ δύο τυφλοὶ καθήμενοι παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν, ἀκούσαντες ὅτι Ἰησοῦς παράγει, ἔκραξαν λέγοντες, ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς, κύριε υἱὸς Δαυίδ. 31 ὁ δὲ ὄχλος ἐπετίμησεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα σιωπήσωσιν: οἱ δὲ μεῖζον ἔκραξαν λέγοντες: ἐλέησον ἡμᾶς κύριε υἱὸς Δαυίδ. 32 καὶ στὰς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐφώνησεν αὐτοὺς καὶ εἶπεν: τί θέλετε ποιήσω ὑμῖν; 33 λέγουσιν αὐτῷ: κύριε, ἵνα ἀνοιγῶσιν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ ἡμῶν. 34 σπλαγχνισθεὶς δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἥψατο τῶν ὀμμάτων αὐτῶν, καὶ εὐθέως ἀνέβλεψαν καὶ ἠκολούθησαν αὐτῷ.

29 When they were leaving Jericho, there was a great multitude that followed him. 30 And there, by the road-side, sat two blind folk, who heard of Jesus’ passing by, and cried aloud, Lord, son of David, have pity on us. 31 The multitude rebuked them, bidding them be silent; but they cried out all the more, Son of David, Lord, have pity on us. 32 Then Jesus stopped, and called them to him; What would you have me do for you? he asked. 33 Lord, they said to him, we would have our eyes opened. 34 And Jesus, moved with compassion, touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight, and followed after him.[3]

29 Et egredientibus illis ab Jericho, secuta est eum turba multa, 30 et ecce duo cæci sedentes secus viam audierunt quia Jesus transiret: et clamaverunt, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David. 31 Turba autem increpabat eos ut tacerent. At illi magis clamabant, dicentes: Domine, miserere nostri, fili David. 32 Et stetit Jesus, et vocavit eos, et ait: Quid vultis ut faciam vobis? 33 Dicunt illi: Domine, ut aperiantur oculi nostri. 34 Misertus autem eorum Jesus, tetigit oculos eorum. Et confestim viderunt, et secuti sunt eum.
