1 ἰδοὺ ἡμέραι ἔρχονται τοῦ κυρίου καὶ διαμερισθήσεται τὰ σκῦλά σου ἐν σοί 2 καὶ ἐπισυνάξω πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ἐπὶ Ιερουσαλημ εἰς πόλεμον καὶ ἁλώσεται ἡ πόλις καὶ διαρπαγήσονται αἱ οἰκίαι καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες μολυνθήσονται καὶ ἐξελεύσεται τὸ ἥμισυ τῆς πόλεως ἐν αἰχμαλωσίᾳ οἱ δὲ κατάλοιποι τοῦ λαοῦ μου οὐ μὴ ἐξολεθρευθῶσιν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως 3 καὶ ἐξελεύσεται κύριος καὶ παρατάξεται ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἐκείνοις καθὼς ἡμέρα παρατάξεως αὐτοῦ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πολέμου 4 καὶ στήσονται οἱ πόδες αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐπὶ τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν τὸ κατέναντι Ιερουσαλημ ἐξ ἀνατολῶν καὶ σχισθήσεται τὸ ὄρος τῶν ἐλαιῶν τὸ ἥμισυ αὐτοῦ πρὸς ἀνατολὰς καὶ τὸ ἥμισυ αὐτοῦ πρὸς θάλασσαν χάος μέγα σφόδρα καὶ κλινεῖ τὸ ἥμισυ τοῦ ὄρους πρὸς βορρᾶν καὶ τὸ ἥμισυ αὐτοῦ πρὸς νότον 5 καὶ ἐμφραχθήσεται φάραγξ ὀρέων μου καὶ ἐγκολληθήσεται φάραγξ ὀρέων ἕως Ιασολ καὶ ἐμφραχθήσεται καθὼς ἐνεφράγη ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις τοῦ σεισμοῦ ἐν ἡμέραις Οζιου βασιλέως Ιουδα καὶ ἥξει κύριος ὁ θεός μου καὶ πάντες οἱ ἅγιοι με{T'} αὐτοῦ

1 The Lord’s appointed time is coming, when spoil of thee shall be divided in thy midst. 2 All the nations of the world I will muster to the siege of Jerusalem; taken the city shall be, and its houses pillaged, and its women-folk ravished; of the defenders, half will go into exile, and leave but a remnant in the city. 3 And then the Lord will go out to battle against those nations, as he did ever in the decisive hour. 4 There on the mount of Olives, that faces Jerusalem on the east, his feet shall be set; to east and west the mount of Olives shall be cloven in two halves, with a great chasm between, and the two halves shall move apart, one northward, one southward. 5 Down the clefts of that sacred hill-side you shall flee, each of them now leading to the next; flee as you fled before the earthquake, in Ozias’ time, that reigned over Juda; on, on he comes, the Lord my God, with all his sacred retinue.

1 Ecce venient dies Domini, et dividentur spolia tua in medio tui. 2 Et congregabo omnes gentes ad Jerusalem in prælium: et capietur civitas, et vastabuntur domus, et mulieres violabuntur: et egredietur media pars civitatis in captivitatem, et reliquum populi non auferetur ex urbe. 3 Et egredietur Dominus, et præliabitur contra gentes illas, sicut præliatus est in die certaminis. 4 Et stabunt pedes ejus in die illa super montem Olivarum, qui est contra Jerusalem ad orientem: et scindetur mons Olivarum ex media parte sui ad orientem et ad occidentem, prærupto grandi valde: et separabitur medium montis ad aquilonem, et medium ejus ad meridiem. 5 Et fugietis ad vallem montium eorum, quoniam conjungetur vallis montium usque ad proximum: et fugietis sicut fugistis a facie terræmotus in diebus Oziæ regis Juda: et veniet Dominus Deus meus, omnesque sancti cum eo.

6 ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ οὐκ ἔσται φῶς καὶ ψῦχος καὶ πάγος 7 ἔσται μίαν ἡμέραν καὶ ἡ ἡμέρα ἐκείνη γνωστὴ τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ οὐχ ἡμέρα καὶ οὐ νύξ καὶ πρὸς ἑσπέραν ἔσται φῶς 8 καὶ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἐξελεύσεται ὕδωρ ζῶν ἐξ Ιερουσαλημ τὸ ἥμισυ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τὴν πρώτην καὶ τὸ ἥμισυ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τὴν ἐσχάτην καὶ ἐν θέρει καὶ ἐν ἔαρι ἔσται οὕτως 9 καὶ ἔσται κύριος εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἔσται κύριος εἷς καὶ τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ ἕν 10 κυκλῶν πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν καὶ τὴν ἔρημον ἀπὸ Γαβε ἕως Ρεμμων κατὰ νότον Ιερουσαλημ Ραμα δὲ ἐπὶ τόπου μενεῖ ἀπὸ τῆς πύλης Βενιαμιν ἕως τοῦ τόπου τῆς πύλης τῆς πρώτης ἕως τῆς πύλης τῶν γωνιῶν καὶ ἕως τοῦ πύργου Ανανεηλ ἕως τῶν ὑποληνίων τοῦ βασιλέως 11 κατοικήσουσιν ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ἀνάθεμα ἔτι καὶ κατοικήσει Ιερουσαλημ πεποιθότως

6 Light there shall be none that day, all shall be frost and cold;[1] 7 one day there shall be, none but the Lord knows the length of it, that shall be neither daylight nor dark, but when evening comes, there shall be light. 8 Then a living stream will flow from Jerusalem, half to the eastern, half to the western sea, winter and summer both; 9 and over all the earth the Lord shall be king, one Lord, called everywhere by one name. 10 What shall be the land’s frontiers? The desert, and Geba, and Remmon[2] that is south of Jerusalem. What of the city? It shall be built up high, and its true limits keep, from gate of Benjamin to main gate and corner gate, from tower of Hananeel to the king’s wine-press. 11 A populous city, no ban resting on it thenceforward; a secure dwelling-place.

6 Et erit in die illa: non erit lux, sed frigus et gelu. 7 Et erit dies una quæ nota est Domino, non dies neque nox: et in tempore vesperi erit lux. 8 Et erit in die illa: exibunt aquæ vivæ de Jerusalem: medium earum ad mare orientale, et medium earum ad mare novissimum: in æstate et in hieme erunt. 9 Et erit Dominus rex super omnem terram: in die illa erit Dominus unus, et erit nomen ejus unum. 10 Et revertetur omnis terra usque ad desertum, de colle Remmon ad austrum Jerusalem: et exaltabitur, et habitabit in loco suo, a porta Benjamin usque ad locum portæ prioris, et usque ad portam angulorum, et a turre Hananeel usque ad torcularia regis. 11 Et habitabunt in ea, et anathema non erit amplius, sed sedebit Jerusalem secura.

12 καὶ αὕτη ἔσται ἡ πτῶσις ἣν κόψει κύριος πάντας τοὺς λαούς ὅσοι ἐπεστράτευσαν ἐπὶ Ιερουσαλημ τακήσονται αἱ σάρκες αὐτῶν ἑστηκότων αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν ῥυήσονται ἐκ τῶν ὀπῶν αὐτῶν καὶ ἡ γλῶσσα αὐτῶν τακήσεται ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν 13 καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἔκστασις κυρίου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς μεγάλη καὶ ἐπιλήμψονται ἕκαστος τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ καὶ συμπλακήσεται ἡ χεὶρ αὐτοῦ πρὸς χεῖρα τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ 14 καὶ ὁ Ιουδας παρατάξεται ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ συνάξει τὴν ἰσχὺν πάντων τῶν λαῶν κυκλόθεν χρυσίον καὶ ἀργύριον καὶ ἱματισμὸν εἰς πλῆθος σφόδρα 15 καὶ αὕτη ἔσται ἡ πτῶσις τῶν ἵππων καὶ τῶν ἡμιόνων καὶ τῶν καμήλων καὶ τῶν ὄνων καὶ πάντων τῶν κτηνῶν τῶν ὄντων ἐν ταῖς παρεμβολαῖς ἐκείναις κατὰ τὴν πτῶσιν ταύτην

12 And what of the visitation that shall smite down the assailants of Jerusalem? Wasted away the flesh of them, till they can keep their feet no longer; wasted away eye in socket and tongue in mouth; 13 with great tumult of mind the Lord will bemuse them that day, each of them laying hands on his fellow, brother engaging brother in fight. 14 Juda meanwhile, shall set about the regaining of Jerusalem,[3] and find the spoils of every neighbouring people amassed there, gold, and silver, and of raiment great abundance; 15 but as for horse and mule, camel and ass, and all the cattle in yonder camp, these will have perished by the same plague as their masters.

12 Et hæc erit plaga qua percutiet Dominus omnes gentes quæ pugnaverunt adversus Jerusalem: tabescet caro uniuscujusque stantis super pedes suos: et oculi ejus contabescent in foraminibus suis, et lingua eorum contabescet in ore suo. 13 In die illa erit tumultus Domini magnus in eis: et apprehendet vir manum proximi sui, et conseretur manus ejus super manum proximi sui. 14 Sed et Judas pugnabit adversus Jerusalem: et congregabuntur divitiæ omnium gentium in circuitu, aurum, et argentum, et vestes multæ satis. 15 Et sic erit ruina equi, et muli, et cameli, et asini, et omnium jumentorum quæ fuerint in castris illis, sicut ruina hæc.

16 καὶ ἔσται ὅσοι ἐὰν καταλειφθῶσιν ἐκ πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν τῶν ἐλθόντων ἐπὶ Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἀναβήσονται κα{T'} ἐνιαυτὸν τοῦ προσκυνῆσαι τῷ βασιλεῖ κυρίῳ παντοκράτορι καὶ τοῦ ἑορτάζειν τὴν ἑορτὴν τῆς σκηνοπηγίας 17 καὶ ἔσται ὅσοι ἐὰν μὴ ἀναβῶσιν ἐκ πασῶν τῶν φυλῶν τῆς γῆς εἰς Ιερουσαλημ τοῦ προσκυνῆσαι τῷ βασιλεῖ κυρίῳ παντοκράτορι καὶ οὗτοι ἐκείνοις προστεθήσονται 18 ἐὰν δὲ φυλὴ Αἰγύπτου μὴ ἀναβῇ μηδὲ ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐπὶ τούτοις ἔσται ἡ πτῶσις ἣν πατάξει κύριος πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ὅσα ἐὰν μὴ ἀναβῇ τοῦ ἑορτάσαι τὴν ἑορτὴν τῆς σκηνοπηγίας 19 αὕτη ἔσται ἡ ἁμαρτία Αἰγύπτου καὶ ἡ ἁμαρτία πάντων τῶν ἐθνῶν ὅσα ἂν μὴ ἀναβῇ τοῦ ἑορτάσαι τὴν ἑορτὴν τῆς σκηνοπηγίας

16 Yet of all the nations that sent their armies against Jerusalem there shall be some remnant left; and these, year by year, shall make pilgrimage, to worship their King, the Lord of hosts, and keep his feast of Tent-dwelling. 17 Come and worship their King they must, the Lord of hosts; else no rain shall fall on them, all the world over. 18 What then of Egypt’s folk, that rain have none? What if they refuse to go on pilgrimage? Why, for their neglecting of this feast, the same plague shall fall on them which the Lord sent on the heathen armies aforesaid.[4] 19 Be it Egypt, or be it any other nation, that will not keep the feast of Tent-dwelling, punished it shall be in this fashion or in that.

16 Et omnes qui reliqui fuerint de universis gentibus quæ venerunt contra Jerusalem, ascendent ab anno in annum ut adorent regem, Dominum exercituum, et celebrent festivitatem tabernaculorum. 17 Et erit: qui non ascenderit de familiis terræ ad Jerusalem ut adoret regem, Dominum exercituum, non erit super eos imber. 18 Quod etsi familia Ægypti non ascenderit et non venerit, nec super eos erit: sed erit ruina, qua percutiet Dominus omnes gentes quæ non ascenderint ad celebrandam festivitatem tabernaculorum. 19 Hoc erit peccatum Ægypti, et hoc peccatum omnium gentium quæ non ascenderint ad celebrandam festivitatem tabernaculorum.

20 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἔσται τὸ ἐπὶ τὸν χαλινὸν τοῦ ἵππου ἅγιον τῷ κυρίῳ παντοκράτορι καὶ ἔσονται οἱ λέβητες οἱ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ κυρίου ὡς φιάλαι πρὸ προσώπου τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου 21 καὶ ἔσται πᾶς λέβης ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἐν τῷ Ιουδα ἅγιον τῷ κυρίῳ παντοκράτορι καὶ ἥξουσιν πάντες οἱ θυσιάζοντες καὶ λήμψονται ἐξ αὐτῶν καὶ ἑψήσουσιν ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ οὐκ ἔσται Χαναναῖος οὐκέτι ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ κυρίου παντοκράτορος ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ

20 Spoils from the enemy’s bridle-rein shall be consecrated on that day to the Lord’s service, till there is never pot or pan in his temple but rivals the altar’s bowls for costliness![5] 21 Nay, never pot or pan in all Jerusalem but shall be consecrated to the Lord of hosts, for any who will to come and take it and seethe victim in it; trafficking there shall be no more in the Lord’s temple, when that day comes.[6]

20 In die illa, erit quod super frenum equi est, sanctum Domino: et erunt lebetes in domo Domini quasi phialæ coram altari. 21 Et erit omnis lebes in Jerusalem et in Juda sanctificatus Domino exercituum: et venient omnes immolantes, et sument ex eis, et coquent in eis: et non erit mercator ultra in domo Domini exercituum in die illo.

[1] The sense of this verse is doubtful, and it seems possible the text needs emendation; perhaps the prophet wrote ‘there shall be neither light nor darkness, heat nor cold’.

[2] For ‘the desert, and Geba, and Remmon’ the Latin version has ‘the desert from the hill of Remmon’.

[3] ‘Set about the regaining of Jerusalem’; in the original simply ‘fight against Jerusalem’. But it is clear from the context that we have gone back to the situation described in verse 2, where Jerusalem is enemy-occupied. The Vulgate here gives the form ‘Judas’, instead of the more usual form ‘Juda’, perhaps with the idea that Judas Machabaeus is referred to.

[4] The Hebrew text is obscure, and perhaps corrupt, but it seems most likely that the sense given above was the general sense of it. The Latin version gives no satisfactory meaning here.

[5] Literally, ‘On that day that which is on the horse’s bridle shall be holy to the Lord, and the caldrons in the Lord’s house will be like bowls before the altar’. The Hebrew text is usually interpreted as meaning that the bells on the trappings of the horses (it is difficult to see what horses) will be inscribed, ‘Holiness to the Lord’.

[6] This verse seems to imply that only consecrated vessels might be used in seething the victim before a sacrifice; and further, that some charge was made by the Temple authorities for the use of the vessels in question.
