1 τότε ᾖσεν Μωυσῆς καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ τὴν ᾠδὴν ταύτην τῷ θεῷ καὶ εἶπαν λέγοντες ᾄσωμεν τῷ κυρίῳ ἐνδόξως γὰρ δεδόξασται ἵππον καὶ ἀναβάτην ἔρριψεν εἰς θάλασσαν 2 βοηθὸς καὶ σκεπαστὴς ἐγένετό μοι εἰς σωτηρίαν οὗτός μου θεός καὶ δοξάσω αὐτόν θεὸς τοῦ πατρός μου καὶ ὑψώσω αὐτόν 3 κύριος συντρίβων πολέμους κύριος ὄνομα αὐτῷ 4 ἅρματα Φαραω καὶ τὴν δύναμιν αὐτοῦ ἔρριψεν εἰς θάλασσαν ἐπιλέκτους ἀναβάτας τριστάτας κατεπόντισεν ἐν ἐρυθρᾷ θαλάσσῃ 5 πόντῳ ἐκάλυψεν αὐτούς κατέδυσαν εἰς βυθὸν ὡσεὶ λίθος 6 ἡ δεξιά σου κύριε δεδόξασται ἐν ἰσχύι ἡ δεξιά σου χείρ κύριε ἔθραυσεν ἐχθρούς 7 καὶ τῷ πλήθει τῆς δόξης σου συνέτριψας τοὺς ὑπεναντίους ἀπέστειλας τὴν ὀργήν σου καὶ κατέφαγεν αὐτοὺς ὡς καλάμην 8 καὶ διὰ πνεύματος τοῦ θυμοῦ σου διέστη τὸ ὕδωρ ἐπάγη ὡσεὶ τεῖχος τὰ ὕδατα ἐπάγη τὰ κύματα ἐν μέσῳ τῆς θαλάσσης

1 Then Moses and the Israelites sang praise to the Lord, and this was their song: A psalm for the Lord, so great he is and so glorious; horse and rider hurled into the sea! 2 Who but the Lord is my protector, the pride of my song; who but the Lord has brought me deliverance? Shall I not praise him, my own God; shall I not extol him, the God of my father before me? 3 The Lord, the warrior God, whose very name tells of omnipotence![1] 4 That power could hurl Pharao’s chariots, Pharao’s army, into the sea; drowned in the Red Sea, the flower of all his chivalry; 5 the depths closed over them, and they sank to the bottom like a stone. 6 How magnificent, Lord, is the strength of thy right hand; that right hand which has shattered the enemy! 7 Against such majesty rose they but to fall; the hot breath of thy anger burnt them up like stubble. 8 The waters were piled high through the blast of thy fury; the waves were still, at the sea’s heart the depths congealed.

1 Tunc cecinit Moyses et filii Israël carmen hoc Domino, et dixerunt:

Cantemus Domino: gloriose enim magnificatus est,
equum et ascensorem dejecit in mare. 2
Fortitudo mea, et laus mea Dominus,
et factus est mihi in salutem:
iste Deus meus, et glorificabo eum:
Deus patris mei, et exaltabo eum. 3
Dominus quasi vir pugnator,
Omnipotens nomen ejus, 4
currus Pharaonis et exercitum ejus projecit in mare:
electi principes ejus submersi sunt in mari Rubro. 5
Abyssi operuerunt eos;
descenderunt in profundum quasi lapis. 6
Dextera tua, Domine, magnificata est in fortitudine:
dextera tua, Domine, percussit inimicum. 7
Et in multitudine gloriæ tuæ deposuisti adversarios tuos:
misisti iram tuam, quæ devoravit eos sicut stipulam. 8
Et in spiritu furoris tui congregatæ sunt aquæ:
stetit unda fluens, congregata sunt abyssi in medio mari.

9 εἶπεν ὁ ἐχθρός διώξας καταλήμψομαι μεριῶ σκῦλα ἐμπλήσω ψυχήν μου ἀνελῶ τῇ μαχαίρῃ μου κυριεύσει ἡ χείρ μου 10 ἀπέστειλας τὸ πνεῦμά σου ἐκάλυψεν αὐτοὺς θάλασσα ἔδυσαν ὡσεὶ μόλιβος ἐν ὕδατι σφοδρῷ 11 τίς ὅμοιός σοι ἐν θεοῖς κύριε τίς ὅμοιός σοι δεδοξασμένος ἐν ἁγίοις θαυμαστὸς ἐν δόξαις ποιῶν τέρατα 12 ἐξέτεινας τὴν δεξιάν σου κατέπιεν αὐτοὺς γῆ

9 After them, seize them! the enemy cried; there will be spoils for all, to our heart’s content; now to unsheathe my sword, and deal the fatal blow! 10 A breath from thee, and the sea closed over them; they sank in the raging waters like lead. 11 What power is there, Lord, that can match thee? Who, as thou art, is august in holiness, who so worthy of fear and of praise, who so wonderful in his doings? 12 Thou hadst but to stretch out thy hand, and the earth swallowed them up.

Dixit inimicus: Persequar et comprehendam,
dividam spolia, implebitur anima mea:
evaginabo gladium meum, interficiet eos manus mea. 10
Flavit spiritus tuus, et operuit eos mare:
submersi sunt quasi plumbum in aquis vehementibus. 11
Quis similis tui in fortibus, Domine?
quis similis tui, magnificus in sanctitate,
terribilis atque laudabilis, faciens mirabilia? 12
Extendisti manum tuam, et devoravit eos terra.

13 ὡδήγησας τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ σου τὸν λαόν σου τοῦτον ὃν ἐλυτρώσω παρεκάλεσας τῇ ἰσχύι σου εἰς κατάλυμα ἅγιόν σου 14 ἤκουσαν ἔθνη καὶ ὠργίσθησαν ὠδῖνες ἔλαβον κατοικοῦντας Φυλιστιιμ 15 τότε ἔσπευσαν ἡγεμόνες Εδωμ καὶ ἄρχοντες Μωαβιτῶν ἔλαβεν αὐτοὺς τρόμος ἐτάκησαν πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες Χανααν 16 ἐπιπέσοι ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς φόβος καὶ τρόμος μεγέθει βραχίονός σου ἀπολιθωθήτωσαν ἕως ἂν παρέλθῃ ὁ λαός σου κύριε ἕως ἂν παρέλθῃ ὁ λαός σου οὗτος ὃν ἐκτήσω 17 εἰσαγαγὼν καταφύτευσον αὐτοὺς εἰς ὄρος κληρονομίας σου εἰς ἕτοιμον κατοικητήριόν σου ὃ κατειργάσω κύριε ἁγίασμα κύριε ὃ ἡτοίμασαν αἱ χεῖρές σου 18 κύριος βασιλεύων τὸν αἰῶνα καὶ ἐ{P'} αἰῶνα καὶ ἔτι 19 ὅτι εἰσῆλθεν ἵππος Φαραω σὺν ἅρμασιν καὶ ἀναβάταις εἰς θάλασσαν καὶ ἐπήγαγεν ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς κύριος τὸ ὕδωρ τῆς θαλάσσης οἱ δὲ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ ἐπορεύθησαν διὰ ξηρᾶς ἐν μέσῳ τῆς θαλάσσης

13 Thy mercy had delivered Israel; thy mercy should be their guide; thy strong arms should carry them to the holy place where thou dwellest. 14 The heathen raged in their hill-fastnesses;[2] anguish came upon Philistia’s citizens, 15 the chieftains of Edom were dismayed, the warriors of Moab overcome with fear; a numbness seized upon all that dwelt in Chanaan. 16 Terror and dread must needs fall upon them; still as a stone, under the threat of thy powerful arm, they must watch thy people go by, thy ransomed people, Lord, go by unharmed. 17 Entry thy people should have, and a home on the mountain thou claimest for thy own, the inviolable dwelling-place, Lord, thou hast made for thyself, the sanctuary thy own hands have fashioned![3] 18 The reign of the Lord will endure for ever and ever. 19 To horse! cried Pharao, and swept chariots and horsemen on into the sea; and the Lord brought the waters of the sea back over them, while the sons of Israel went through the midst of it dry-shod.[4]

Irruat super eos formido et pavor, in magnitudine brachii tui:
fiant immobiles quasi lapis,
donec pertranseat populus tuus, Domine,
donec pertranseat populus tuus iste, quem possedisti. 17
Introduces eos, et plantabis in monte hæreditatis tuæ,
firmissimo habitaculo tuo quod operatus es, Domine:
sanctuarium tuum, Domine, quod firmaverunt manus tuæ. 18
Dominus regnabit in æternum et ultra. 19
Ingressus est enim eques Pharao
cum curribus et equitibus ejus in mare:
et reduxit super eos Dominus
aquas maris:
filii autem Israël ambulaverunt per siccum in medio ejus.

20 λαβοῦσα δὲ Μαριαμ ἡ προφῆτις ἡ ἀδελφὴ Ααρων τὸ τύμπανον ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτῆς καὶ ἐξήλθοσαν πᾶσαι αἱ γυναῖκες ὀπίσω αὐτῆς μετὰ τυμπάνων καὶ χορῶν 21 ἐξῆρχεν δὲ αὐτῶν Μαριαμ λέγουσα ᾄσωμεν τῷ κυρίῳ ἐνδόξως γὰρ δεδόξασται ἵππον καὶ ἀναβάτην ἔρριψεν εἰς θάλασσαν

20 Hereupon Mary the prophetess, Aaron’s sister,[5] went out with a tambour in her hand, and all the women-folk followed her, with tambour and with dances, 21 and took up from her the refrain, A psalm for the Lord, so great he is and so glorious; horse and rider hurled into the sea!

20 Sumpsit ergo Maria prophetissa, soror Aaron, tympanum in manu sua: egressæque sunt omnes mulieres post eam cum tympanis et choris, 21 quibus præcinebat, dicens:

22 ἐξῆρεν δὲ Μωυσῆς τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ ἀπὸ θαλάσσης ἐρυθρᾶς καὶ ἤγαγεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν ἔρημον Σουρ καὶ ἐπορεύοντο τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ οὐχ ηὕρισκον ὕδωρ ὥστε πιεῖν 23 ἦλθον δὲ εἰς Μερρα καὶ οὐκ ἠδύναντο πιεῖν ἐκ Μερρας πικρὸν γὰρ ἦν διὰ τοῦτο ἐπωνομάσθη τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου πικρία 24 καὶ διεγόγγυζεν ὁ λαὸς ἐπὶ Μωυσῆν λέγοντες τί πιόμεθα 25 ἐβόησεν δὲ Μωυσῆς πρὸς κύριον καὶ ἔδειξεν αὐτῷ κύριος ξύλον καὶ ἐνέβαλεν αὐτὸ εἰς τὸ ὕδωρ καὶ ἐγλυκάνθη τὸ ὕδωρ ἐκεῖ ἔθετο αὐτῷ δικαιώματα καὶ κρίσεις καὶ ἐκεῖ ἐπείρασεν αὐτὸν 26 καὶ εἶπεν ἐὰν ἀκοῇ ἀκούσῃς τῆς φωνῆς κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ σου καὶ τὰ ἀρεστὰ ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ποιήσῃς καὶ ἐνωτίσῃ ταῖς ἐντολαῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ φυλάξῃς πάντα τὰ δικαιώματα αὐτοῦ πᾶσαν νόσον ἣν ἐπήγαγον τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις οὐκ ἐπάξω ἐπὶ σέ ἐγὼ γάρ εἰμι κύριος ὁ ἰώμενός σε 27 καὶ ἤλθοσαν εἰς Αιλιμ καὶ ἦσαν ἐκεῖ δώδεκα πηγαὶ ὑδάτων καὶ ἑβδομήκοντα στελέχη φοινίκων παρενέβαλον δὲ ἐκεῖ παρὰ τὰ ὕδατα

22 And now Moses led Israel away from the Red Sea, and they went out into the desert of Sur, where they found no water in three days’ marching over waste ground. 23 So they came to Mara, and even here they could not drink the water, so brackish it was to the taste; it was with good reason he called it Mara, for Mara means Bitterness. 24 Here the people were loud in their complaints against Moses; What shall we do for water? they said. 25 Whereupon he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord shewed him a tree whose wood turned the waters sweet when it was thrown into them. Here, too, he gave them laws and decrees to live by,[6] and issued this challenge to them: 26 If thou wilt listen to the voice of the Lord thy God, his will doing, his word obeying, and all he bids thee observe, observing faithfully, never shall they fall on thee, the many woes brought on Egypt; I am the Lord, and it is health I bring thee. 27 After this the Israelites came to Elim, where they found twelve springs of water and seventy palm-trees, and pitched their tents beside the water.

22 Tulit autem Moyses Israël de mari Rubro, et egressi sunt in desertum Sur: ambulaveruntque tribus diebus per solitudinem, et non inveniebant aquam. 23 Et venerunt in Mara, nec poterant bibere aquas de Mara, eo quod essent amaræ: unde et congruum loco nomen imposuit, vocans illum Mara, id est, amaritudinem. 24 Et murmuravit populus contra Moysen, dicens: Quid bibemus? 25 At ille clamavit ad Dominum, qui ostendit ei lignum: quod cum misisset in aquas, in dulcedinem versæ sunt: ibi constituit ei præcepta, atque judicia, et ibi tentavit eum, 26 dicens: Si audieris vocem Domini Dei tui, et quod rectum est coram eo feceris, et obedieris mandatis ejus, custodierisque omnia præcepta illius, cunctum languorem, quem posui in Ægypto, non inducam super te: ego enim Dominus sanator tuus. 27 Venerunt autem in Elim filii Israël, ubi erant duodecim fontes aquarum, et septuaginta palmæ: et castrametati sunt juxta aquas.

[1] ‘Whose very name tells of omnipotence’; in the Hebrew text, ‘his name is Yahweh’. This was the divine name communicated to Moses in Ex. 3.14; commonly in the Latin version this is translated ‘the Lord’, but here ‘the omnipotent’ as if to stress that it is a significant word, and not a mere title.

[2] The Hebrew text has, ‘The nations heard and were afraid’; the Latin version, ‘The nations went up and were angry’; it is not clear in what sense.

[3] Some of the verbs in this passage may refer either to the future or to the past and it has been suggested that it was added to the song at a later period, after the conquest of Chanaan. But it seems more natural to understand it as an anticipation, on the part of the Israelites, of an unlaborious victory over Chanaan, which was in fact denied them.

[4] Some regard this verse not as part of the song, but as an historical résumé leading up to verse 20. According to the Hebrew text, it was ‘the horses of Pharao’ that went into the sea; the Latin implies that Pharao himself went into the sea on horseback, but this is probably due to a textual error.

[5] And sister, also, of Moses, but the mention of the elder brother’s name is a genealogical formality, cf. Gen. 36.22.

[6] ‘He gave them’; literally, ‘he gave it’, i.e. the people, or (less probably) ‘he gave him’, i.e. Moses.
