1 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λάξευσον σεαυτῷ δύο πλάκας λιθίνας καθὼς καὶ αἱ πρῶται καὶ ἀνάβηθι πρός με εἰς τὸ ὄρος καὶ γράψω ἐπὶ τῶν πλακῶν τὰ ῥήματα ἃ ἦν ἐν ταῖς πλαξὶν ταῖς πρώταις αἷς συνέτριψας 2 καὶ γίνου ἕτοιμος εἰς τὸ πρωὶ καὶ ἀναβήσῃ ἐπὶ τὸ ὄρος τὸ Σινα καὶ στήσῃ μοι ἐκεῖ ἐ{P'} ἄκρου τοῦ ὄρους 3 καὶ μηδεὶς ἀναβήτω μετὰ σοῦ μηδὲ ὀφθήτω ἐν παντὶ τῷ ὄρει καὶ τὰ πρόβατα καὶ αἱ βόες μὴ νεμέσθωσαν πλησίον τοῦ ὄρους ἐκείνου 4 καὶ ἐλάξευσεν δύο πλάκας λιθίνας καθάπερ καὶ αἱ πρῶται καὶ ὀρθρίσας Μωυσῆς ἀνέβη εἰς τὸ ὄρος τὸ Σινα καθότι συνέταξεν αὐτῷ κύριος καὶ ἔλαβεν Μωυσῆς τὰς δύο πλάκας τὰς λιθίνας 5 καὶ κατέβη κύριος ἐν νεφέλῃ καὶ παρέστη αὐτῷ ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τῷ ὀνόματι κυρίου 6 καὶ παρῆλθεν κύριος πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐκάλεσεν κύριος ὁ θεὸς οἰκτίρμων καὶ ἐλεήμων μακρόθυμος καὶ πολυέλεος καὶ ἀληθινὸς 7 καὶ δικαιοσύνην διατηρῶν καὶ ποιῶν ἔλεος εἰς χιλιάδας ἀφαιρῶν ἀνομίας καὶ ἀδικίας καὶ ἁμαρτίας καὶ οὐ καθαριεῖ τὸν ἔνοχον ἐπάγων ἀνομίας πατέρων ἐπὶ τέκνα καὶ ἐπὶ τέκνα τέκνων ἐπὶ τρίτην καὶ τετάρτην γενεάν 8 καὶ σπεύσας Μωυσῆς κύψας ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν προσεκύνησεν 9 καὶ εἶπεν εἰ εὕρηκα χάριν ἐνώπιόν σου συμπορευθήτω ὁ κύριός μου με{Q'} ἡμῶν ὁ λαὸς γὰρ σκληροτράχηλός ἐστιν καὶ ἀφελεῖς σὺ τὰς ἁμαρτίας ἡμῶν καὶ τὰς ἀνομίας ἡμῶν καὶ ἐσόμεθα σοί

1 After this the Lord said to him, Carve two tablets of stone, like those others, and I will write on them the same words as I wrote on the tablets thou didst break. 2 Be ready to come up on to mount Sinai in the morning, and there thou shalt stand before me on the mountain top. 3 No one else is to climb up with thee, no one else is to be in sight on any part of the mountain; even the cattle and the sheep must not be allowed to graze within view. 4 So Moses carved two tablets of stone, like the others; and he rose at dawn and went up mount Sinai at the Lord’s bidding, with the tablets in his hand. 5 The Lord came down to meet him, hidden in cloud, and Moses stood with him there, calling on the Lord’s name. 6 Thus the Lord passed by, and he cried out, It is the Lord God, the ruler of all things, the merciful, the gracious; slow to take vengeance, rich in kindness, faithful to his promises. 7 He is true to his promise of mercy a thousand times over; shame or sin or guilt is none but he forgives it; yet, before him, none can claim innocence in his own right, and when he punishes, the son must make amends for the father’s guilt, to the third and the fourth generation.[1] 8 Then, without more ado, Moses fell prostrate with his face to the ground in worship. 9 Lord, he said, if thou dost look on me with favour, I entreat thee to go with us on our journey, stiff-necked as this people is; guilt of our sins do thou pardon, and keep us for thy own.

1 Ac deinceps: Præcide, ait, tibi duas tabulas lapideas instar priorum, et scribam super eas verba, quæ habuerunt tabulæ quas fregisti. 2 Esto paratus mane, ut ascendas statim in montem Sinai, stabisque mecum super verticem montis. 3 Nullus ascendat tecum, nec videatur quispiam per totum montem: boves quoque et oves non pascantur e contra. 4 Excidit ergo duas tabulas lapideas, quales antea fuerant: et de nocte consurgens ascendit in montem Sinai, sicut præceperat ei Dominus, portans secum tabulas. 5 Cumque descendisset Dominus per nubem, stetit Moyses cum eo, invocans nomen Domini. 6 Quo transeunte coram eo, ait: Dominator Domine Deus, misericors et clemens, patiens et multæ miserationis, ac verax, 7 qui custodis misericordiam in millia; qui aufers iniquitatem, et scelera, atque peccata, nullusque apud te per se innocens est; qui reddis iniquitatem patrum filiis, ac nepotibus in tertiam et quartam progeniem. 8 Festinusque Moyses, curvatus est pronus in terram, et adorans 9 ait: Si inveni gratiam in conspectu tuo, Domine, obsecro ut gradiaris nobiscum (populus enim duræ cervicis est) et auferas iniquitates nostras atque peccata, nosque possideas.

10 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ τίθημί σοι διαθήκην ἐνώπιον παντὸς τοῦ λαοῦ σου ποιήσω ἔνδοξα ἃ οὐ γέγονεν ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ καὶ ἐν παντὶ ἔθνει καὶ ὄψεται πᾶς ὁ λαός ἐν οἷς εἶ σύ τὰ ἔργα κυρίου ὅτι θαυμαστά ἐστιν ἃ ἐγὼ ποιήσω σοι 11 πρόσεχε σὺ πάντα ὅσα ἐγὼ ἐντέλλομαί σοι ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐκβάλλω πρὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν τὸν Αμορραῖον καὶ Χαναναῖον καὶ Χετταῖον καὶ Φερεζαῖον καὶ Ευαῖον καὶ Γεργεσαῖον καὶ Ιεβουσαῖον 12 πρόσεχε σεαυτῷ μήποτε θῇς διαθήκην τοῖς ἐγκαθημένοις ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς εἰς ἣν εἰσπορεύῃ εἰς αὐτήν μή σοι γένηται πρόσκομμα ἐν ὑμῖν 13 τοὺς βωμοὺς αὐτῶν καθελεῖτε καὶ τὰς στήλας αὐτῶν συντρίψετε καὶ τὰ ἄλση αὐτῶν ἐκκόψετε καὶ τὰ γλυπτὰ τῶν θεῶν αὐτῶν κατακαύσετε ἐν πυρί 14 οὐ γὰρ μὴ προσκυνήσητε θεῷ ἑτέρῳ ὁ γὰρ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ζηλωτὸν ὄνομα θεὸς ζηλωτής ἐστιν 15 μήποτε θῇς διαθήκην τοῖς ἐγκαθημένοις πρὸς ἀλλοφύλους ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἐκπορνεύσωσιν ὀπίσω τῶν θεῶν αὐτῶν καὶ θύσωσι τοῖς θεοῖς αὐτῶν καὶ καλέσωσίν σε καὶ φάγῃς τῶν θυμάτων αὐτῶν 16 καὶ λάβῃς τῶν θυγατέρων αὐτῶν τοῖς υἱοῖς σου καὶ τῶν θυγατέρων σου δῷς τοῖς υἱοῖς αὐτῶν καὶ ἐκπορνεύσωσιν αἱ θυγατέρες σου ὀπίσω τῶν θεῶν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐκπορνεύσωσιν τοὺς υἱούς σου ὀπίσω τῶν θεῶν αὐτῶν 17 καὶ θεοὺς χωνευτοὺς οὐ ποιήσεις σεαυτῷ

10 And the Lord answered, Here is my covenant, to which I am pledged. In the presence of you all I will do such marvels as were never yet seen on earth by any nation; the people among whom thou dwellest shall see for themselves what the Lord can do, and be terrified at the sight. 11 Thy part is to keep all the commandments I am now giving thee.

When I dispossess Amorrhite, Chanaanite, Hethite, Pherezite, Hevite and Jebusite at thy coming, 12 make no treaty of friendship with any inhabitant of the land, or it will be thy ruin; 13 destroy their altars, break their images, cut down their forest shrines.[2] 14 Never pay worship to any alien god; the very name of the Lord bespeaks jealous love, he will endure no rival. 15 Do not ally yourselves, then, with those who dwell there; those faithless hearts will be set on their own gods, and when they do sacrifice to their idols, someone will bid thee come and feast upon the meat so offered. 16 Nor must thou find wives for thy sons among their daughters; faithless themselves, they will make thy sons, too, faithless, and worshippers of their own gods. 17 Cast no metal to make thyself idols.

10 Respondit Dominus: Ego inibo pactum videntibus cunctis: signa faciam quæ numquam visa sunt super terram, nec in ullis gentibus, ut cernat populus iste, in cujus es medio, opus Domini terribile quod facturus sum. 11 Observa cuncta quæ hodie mando tibi: ego ipse ejiciam ante faciem tuam Amorrhæum, et Chananæum, et Hethæum, Pherezæum quoque, et Hevæum, et Jebusæum. 12 Cave ne umquam cum habitatoribus terræ illius jungas amicitias, quæ sint tibi in ruinam: 13 sed aras eorum destrue, confringe statuas, lucosque succide: 14 noli adorare deum alienum. Dominus zelotes nomen ejus; Deus est æmulator. 15 Ne ineas pactum cum hominibus illarum regionum: ne, cum fornicati fuerint cum diis suis, et adoraverint simulacra eorum, vocet te quispiam ut comedas de immolatis. 16 Nec uxorem de filiabus eorum accipies filiis tuis: ne, postquam ipsæ fuerint fornicatæ, fornicari faciant et filios tuos in deos suos. 17 Deos conflatiles non facies tibi.

18 καὶ τὴν ἑορτὴν τῶν ἀζύμων φυλάξῃ ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας φάγῃ ἄζυμα καθάπερ ἐντέταλμαί σοι εἰς τὸν καιρὸν ἐν μηνὶ τῶν νέων ἐν γὰρ μηνὶ τῶν νέων ἐξῆλθες ἐξ Αἰγύπτου

18 Observe the feast of unleavened bread. For seven days, in the first month of spring, thou shalt eat thy bread without leaven, as I bade thee; it was in that spring month thou didst escape from Egypt.

18 Solemnitatem azymorum custodies. Septem diebus vesceris azymis, sicut præcepi tibi, in tempore mensis novorum: mense enim verni temporis egressus es de Ægypto.

19 πᾶν διανοῖγον μήτραν ἐμοί τὰ ἀρσενικά πρωτότοκον μόσχου καὶ πρωτότοκον προβάτου 20 καὶ πρωτότοκον ὑποζυγίου λυτρώσῃ προβάτῳ ἐὰν δὲ μὴ λυτρώσῃ αὐτό τιμὴν δώσεις πᾶν πρωτότοκον τῶν υἱῶν σου λυτρώσῃ οὐκ ὀφθήσῃ ἐνώπιόν μου κενός

19 The first male thing that comes from every womb is forfeit to me; every such living thing, be it ox or ass, is mine by right. 20 When an ass has her first foal, thou shalt offer a sheep in payment of its ransom; or, if thou hast no mind to ransom it, let it be killed. The first-born of thy own sons thou must ransom, presenting thyself before me with an offering.

19 Omne quod aperit vulvam generis masculini, meum erit. De cunctis animantibus, tam de bobus, quam de ovibus, meum erit. 20 Primogenitum asini redimes ove: sin autem nec pretium pro eo dederis, occidetur. Primogenitum filiorum tuorum redimes: nec apparebis in conspectu meo vacuus.

21 ἓξ ἡμέρας ἐργᾷ τῇ δὲ ἑβδόμῃ καταπαύσεις τῷ σπόρῳ καὶ τῷ ἀμήτῳ καταπαύσεις

21 Thou hast six days to work in; on the seventh, both ploughing and reaping must cease.

22 καὶ ἑορτὴν ἑβδομάδων ποιήσεις μοι ἀρχὴν θερισμοῦ πυρῶν καὶ ἑορτὴν συναγωγῆς μεσοῦντος τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ 23 τρεῖς καιροὺς τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ὀφθήσεται πᾶν ἀρσενικόν σου ἐνώπιον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ Ισραηλ 24 ὅταν γὰρ ἐκβάλω τὰ ἔθνη πρὸ προσώπου σου καὶ πλατύνω τὰ ὅριά σου οὐκ ἐπιθυμήσει οὐδεὶς τῆς γῆς σου ἡνίκα ἂν ἀναβαίνῃς ὀφθῆναι ἐναντίον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ σου τρεῖς καιροὺς τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ

22 Thou shalt keep the feast of the seven weeks, with the first-fruits of thy wheat harvest, and another feast at the end of the year, when all is gathered in. 23 Thrice in the year all thy men folk shall present themselves before the Lord, the almighty God of Israel. 24 And so, when I have dispossessed the nations at thy coming, and given thee wide lands to dwell in, three times a year present thyself before the Lord thy God, and thy lands none shall invade by treachery.

22 Solemnitatem hebdomadarum facies tibi in primitiis frugum messis tuæ triticeæ, et solemnitatem, quando redeunte anni tempore cuncta conduntur. 23 Tribus temporibus anni apparebit omne masculinum tuum in conspectu omnipotentis Domini Dei Israël. 24 Cum enim tulero gentes a facie tua, et dilatavero terminos tuos, nullus insidiabitur terræ tuæ, ascendente te, et apparente in conspectu Domini Dei tui ter in anno.

25 οὐ σφάξεις ἐπὶ ζύμῃ αἷμα θυμιαμάτων μου καὶ οὐ κοιμηθήσεται εἰς τὸ πρωὶ θύματα τῆς ἑορτῆς τοῦ πασχα

25 When thou offerest living things in sacrifice to me, the bread that goes with them shall not be leavened, nor shalt thou leave any of the paschal victim till the morrow.

25 Non immolabis super fermento sanguinem hostiæ meæ: neque residebit mane de victima solemnitatis Phase.

26 τὰ πρωτογενήματα τῆς γῆς σου θήσεις εἰς τὸν οἶκον κυρίου τοῦ θεοῦ σου οὐ προσοίσεις ἄρνα ἐν γάλακτι μητρὸς αὐτοῦ

26 Bring the first-fruits of thy land as an offering to the house of the Lord thy God. Seething a kid in its dam’s milk is a rite forbidden thee.

26 Primitias frugum terræ tuæ offeres in domo Domini Dei tui. Non coques hædum in lacte matris suæ.

27 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν γράψον σεαυτῷ τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα ἐπὶ γὰρ τῶν λόγων τούτων τέθειμαί σοι διαθήκην καὶ τῷ Ισραηλ 28 καὶ ἦν ἐκεῖ Μωυσῆς ἐναντίον κυρίου τεσσαράκοντα ἡμέρας καὶ τεσσαράκοντα νύκτας ἄρτον οὖκ ἔφαγεν καὶ ὕδωρ οὐκ ἔπιεν καὶ ἔγραψεν τὰ ῥήματα ταῦτα ἐπὶ τῶν πλακῶν τῆς διαθήκης τοὺς δέκα λόγους 29 ὡς δὲ κατέβαινεν Μωυσῆς ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους καὶ αἱ δύο πλάκες ἐπὶ τῶν χειρῶν Μωυσῆ καταβαίνοντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ ὄρους Μωυσῆς οὐκ ᾔδει ὅτι δεδόξασται ἡ ὄψις τοῦ χρώματος τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ λαλεῖν αὐτὸν αὐτῷ 30 καὶ εἶδεν Ααρων καὶ πάντες οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ισραηλ τὸν Μωυσῆν καὶ ἦν δεδοξασμένη ἡ ὄψις τοῦ χρώματος τοῦ προσώπου αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν ἐγγίσαι αὐτοῦ 31 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτοὺς Μωυσῆς καὶ ἐπεστράφησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν Ααρων καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄρχοντες τῆς συναγωγῆς καὶ ἐλάλησεν αὐτοῖς Μωυσῆς 32 καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα προσῆλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντες οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ καὶ ἐνετείλατο αὐτοῖς πάντα ὅσα ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ὄρει Σινα 33 καὶ ἐπειδὴ κατέπαυσεν λαλῶν πρὸς αὐτούς ἐπέθηκεν ἐπὶ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ κάλυμμα 34 ἡνίκα {D'} ἂν εἰσεπορεύετο Μωυσῆς ἔναντι κυρίου λαλεῖν αὐτῷ περιῃρεῖτο τὸ κάλυμμα ἕως τοῦ ἐκπορεύεσθαι καὶ ἐξελθὼν ἐλάλει πᾶσιν τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ ὅσα ἐνετείλατο αὐτῷ κύριος 35 καὶ εἶδον οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ τὸ πρόσωπον Μωυσῆ ὅτι δεδόξασται καὶ περιέθηκεν Μωυσῆς κάλυμμα ἐπὶ τὸ πρόσωπον ἑαυτοῦ ἕως ἂν εἰσέλθῃ συλλαλεῖν αὐτῷ

27 Then the Lord said to Moses, Put these words in writing, as terms of the covenant I am making with thee and with Israel. 28 So, for forty days and nights, without food or drink, he remained there with the Lord; and he wrote down on the tablets the ten precepts of the covenant.[3] 29 Moses came down, after this, from Mount Sinai, bearing with him the two tablets on which the law was written; and his face, although he did not know it, was all radiant[4] after the meeting at which he had held speech with God. 30 The sight of that radiance made Aaron and the sons of Israel shrink from all near approach to him; 31 he must call out to Aaron and the leaders of the people before they would gather round him. To these he spoke first; 32 then all the Israelites came to greet him, and he passed on to them all the commands he had received on mount Sinai. 33 When he had finished speaking, he put a veil over his face, 34 which he only laid aside when he went into the Lord’s presence and had speech with him. Afterwards he would come out, and tell the Israelites what commands had been given him; 35 so they saw his face, as he came out, still radiant, but always, when he spoke to them, he veiled his face as before.

27 Dixitque Dominus ad Moysen: Scribe tibi verba hæc, quibus et tecum et cum Israël pepigi fœdus. 28 Fuit ergo ibi cum Domino quadraginta dies et quadraginta noctes: panem non comedit, et aquam non bibit, et scripsit in tabulis verba fœderis decem. 29 Cumque descenderet Moyses de monte Sinai, tenebat duas tabulas testimonii, et ignorabat quod cornuta esset facies sua ex consortio sermonis Domini. 30 Videntes autem Aaron et filii Israël cornutam Moysi faciem, timuerunt prope accedere. 31 Vocatique ab eo, reversi sunt tam Aaron, quam principes synagogæ. Et postquam locutus est ad eos, 32 venerunt ad eum etiam omnes filii Israël: quibus præcepit cuncta quæ audierat a Domino in monte Sinai. 33 Impletisque sermonibus, posuit velamen super faciem suam. 34 Quod ingressus ad Dominum, et loquens cum eo, auferebat donec exiret, et tunc loquebatur ad filios Israël omnia quæ sibi fuerant imperata. 35 Qui videbant faciem egredientis Moysi esse cornutam, sed operiebat ille rursus faciem suam, siquando loquebatur ad eos.

[1] In the Latin version, it is Moses who cries aloud the Lord’s name, and describes him in the terms of verses 6 and 7. But according to the Hebrew text, it is the Almighty who cries out his own name as he comes near, and verses 6 and 7 give the terms in which he does so. This is more in keeping with the promise made above (33.19).

[2] ‘Images’; the word here used, which is of frequent occurrence, perhaps refers to stone pillars set up by the side of heathen altars; they may, originally, have been meant for representations of deity. The ‘forest shrines’ seem to have been sacred wooden poles similarly erected by the side of altars. These may have been survivals of tree-worship; cf. the emphasis on worshipping under trees in (e.g.) Jer. 2.20; 3.6, 13.

[3] The text is awkward, suggesting that Moses wrote on the two tablets of stone the precepts, largely ceremonial, given in the preceding verses (11-26). But it is clear from verse 1 above that it was God who wrote on this occasion, reinscribing the moral precepts of Ex. 20.2-17; Moses will have carried out the command given to him in verse 27 later on, with ordinary writing materials.
