1 ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ τὸ γηρᾶσαι Ισαακ καὶ ἠμβλύνθησαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτοῦ τοῦ ὁρᾶν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Ησαυ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ τὸν πρεσβύτερον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ υἱέ μου καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἐγώ 2 καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ γεγήρακα καὶ οὐ γινώσκω τὴν ἡμέραν τῆς τελευτῆς μου 3 νῦν οὖν λαβὲ τὸ σκεῦός σου τήν τε φαρέτραν καὶ τὸ τόξον καὶ ἔξελθε εἰς τὸ πεδίον καὶ θήρευσόν μοι θήραν 4 καὶ ποίησόν μοι ἐδέσματα ὡς φιλῶ ἐγώ καὶ ἔνεγκέ μοι ἵνα φάγω ὅπως εὐλογήσῃ σε ἡ ψυχή μου πρὶν ἀποθανεῖν με

1 And now Isaac was old, and his eyes had grown so dim that he saw nothing. One day he called to his elder son Esau, My son! and when he answered, I am here, at thy command, 2 See, his father said, how old a man I have grown; there is no telling how soon I may be overtaken by death. 3 Come, fetch that armoury of thine, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out hunting; when thou hast slain thy quarry, 4 make me a roast dish, such as I love well, and bring it me to eat. And so thou shalt have my blessing, against the time of my death.

1 Senuit autem Isaac, et caligaverunt oculi ejus, et videre non poterat: vocavitque Esau filium suum majorem, et dixit ei: Fili mi? Qui respondit: Adsum. 2 Cui pater: Vides, inquit, quod senuerim, et ignorem diem mortis meæ. 3 Sume arma tua, pharetram, et arcum, et egredere foras: cumque venatu aliquid apprehenderis, 4 fac mihi inde pulmentum sicut velle me nosti, et affer ut comedam: et benedicat tibi anima mea antequam moriar.

5 Ρεβεκκα δὲ ἤκουσεν λαλοῦντος Ισαακ πρὸς Ησαυ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπορεύθη δὲ Ησαυ εἰς τὸ πεδίον θηρεῦσαι θήραν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ 6 Ρεβεκκα δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς Ιακωβ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν ἐλάσσω ἰδὲ ἐγὼ ἤκουσα τοῦ πατρός σου λαλοῦντος πρὸς Ησαυ τὸν ἀδελφόν σου λέγοντος 7 ἔνεγκόν μοι θήραν καὶ ποίησόν μοι ἐδέσματα καὶ φαγὼν εὐλογήσω σε ἐναντίον κυρίου πρὸ τοῦ ἀποθανεῖν με 8 νῦν οὖν υἱέ ἄκουσόν μου καθὰ ἐγώ σοι ἐντέλλομαι 9 καὶ πορευθεὶς εἰς τὰ πρόβατα λαβέ μοι ἐκεῖθεν δύο ἐρίφους ἁπαλοὺς καὶ καλούς καὶ ποιήσω αὐτοὺς ἐδέσματα τῷ πατρί σου ὡς φιλεῖ 10 καὶ εἰσοίσεις τῷ πατρί σου καὶ φάγεται ὅπως εὐλογήσῃ σε ὁ πατήρ σου πρὸ τοῦ ἀποθανεῖν αὐτόν 11 εἶπεν δὲ Ιακωβ πρὸς Ρεβεκκαν τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ ἔστιν Ησαυ ὁ ἀδελφός μου ἀνὴρ δασύς ἐγὼ δὲ ἀνὴρ λεῖος 12 μήποτε ψηλαφήσῃ με ὁ πατήρ μου καὶ ἔσομαι ἐναντίον αὐτοῦ ὡς καταφρονῶν καὶ ἐπάξω ἐ{P'} ἐμαυτὸν κατάραν καὶ οὐκ εὐλογίαν 13 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ἡ μήτηρ ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ ἡ κατάρα σου τέκνον μόνον ὑπάκουσον τῆς φωνῆς μου καὶ πορευθεὶς ἔνεγκέ μοι 14 πορευθεὶς δὲ ἔλαβεν καὶ ἤνεγκεν τῇ μητρί καὶ ἐποίησεν ἡ μήτηρ αὐτοῦ ἐδέσματα καθὰ ἐφίλει ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ 15 καὶ λαβοῦσα Ρεβεκκα τὴν στολὴν Ησαυ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτῆς τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου τὴν καλήν ἣ ἦν πα{R'} αὐτῇ ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ ἐνέδυσεν Ιακωβ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν νεώτερον 16 καὶ τὰ δέρματα τῶν ἐρίφων περιέθηκεν ἐπὶ τοὺς βραχίονας αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ γυμνὰ τοῦ τραχήλου αὐτοῦ 17 καὶ ἔδωκεν τὰ ἐδέσματα καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους οὓς ἐποίησεν εἰς τὰς χεῖρας Ιακωβ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτῆς

5 To all this, Rebecca listened; and when Esau had gone out hunting, to do as his father had bidden him, 6 she said to her son Jacob, I heard thy father talking to thy brother Esau, and thus he spoke to him; 7 Bring my venison from the chase, and make me a dish of meat; so thou shalt have my blessing, with the Lord to witness it, against the time of my death. 8 Nothing remains for thee, my son, but to fall in with this plan of mine. 9 Make thy way to the herd, and bring me two choice kids; of these I will make such a dish as thy father loves to eat, 10 and thou shalt take it in to him; so, when he has eaten it, his dying benediction shall be thine instead. 11 Bethink thee, answered Jacob, how hairy my brother Esau’s skin is, and mine how smooth! 12 What if my father should feel it? He will think that I have been trying to make game of him, and it is a curse, not a blessing, I shall win. 13 A curse, my son? said his mother. Let it fall on me; do but attend to my bidding, and fetch me what I ask for. 14 So he went and brought them to his mother, and she made a dish of meat, such as she knew his father loved. 15 She had fine clothes of Esau’s by her in the house, and she dressed Jacob in these; 16 enclosed his hands, too in skin he had taken from the kids, and covered his bare neck with it; 17 then she gave him the dish, and some loaves which she had cooked, to carry with him.

5 Quod cum audisset Rebecca, et ille abiisset in agrum ut jussionem patris impleret, 6 dixit filio suo Jacob: Audivi patrem tuum loquentem cum Esau fratre tuo, et dicentem ei: 7 Affer mihi de venatione tua, et fac cibos ut comedam, et benedicam tibi coram Domino antequam moriar. 8 Nunc ergo, fili mi, acquiesce consiliis meis: 9 et pergens ad gregem, affer mihi duos hædos optimos, ut faciam ex eis escas patri tuo, quibus libenter vescitur: 10 quas cum intuleris, et comederit, benedicat tibi priusquam moriatur. 11 Cui ille respondit: Nosti quod Esau frater meus homo pilosus sit, et ego lenis: 12 si attrectaverit me pater meus, et senserit, timeo ne putet me sibi voluisse illudere, et inducam super me maledictionem pro benedictione. 13 Ad quem mater: In me sit, ait, ista maledictio, fili mi: tantum audi vocem meam, et pergens, affer quæ dixi. 14 Abiit, et attulit, deditque matri. Paravit illa cibos, sicut velle noverat patrem illius. 15 Et vestibus Esau valde bonis, quas apud se habebat domi, induit eum: 16 pelliculasque hædorum circumdedit manibus, et colli nuda protexit: 17 deditque pulmentum, et panes, quos coxerat, tradidit.

18 καὶ εἰσήνεγκεν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ εἶπεν δέ πάτερ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ἐγώ τίς εἶ σύ τέκνον 19 καὶ εἶπεν Ιακωβ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ ἐγὼ Ησαυ ὁ πρωτότοκός σου ἐποίησα καθὰ ἐλάλησάς μοι ἀναστὰς κάθισον καὶ φάγε τῆς θήρας μου ὅπως εὐλογήσῃ με ἡ ψυχή σου 20 εἶπεν δὲ Ισαακ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ τί τοῦτο ὃ ταχὺ εὗρες ὦ τέκνον ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ὃ παρέδωκεν κύριος ὁ θεός σου ἐναντίον μου 21 εἶπεν δὲ Ισαακ τῷ Ιακωβ ἔγγισόν μοι καὶ ψηλαφήσω σε τέκνον εἰ σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱός μου Ησαυ ἢ οὔ 22 ἤγγισεν δὲ Ιακωβ πρὸς Ισαακ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐψηλάφησεν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν ἡ μὲν φωνὴ φωνὴ Ιακωβ αἱ δὲ χεῖρες χεῖρες Ησαυ 23 καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνω αὐτόν ἦσαν γὰρ αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ὡς αἱ χεῖρες Ησαυ τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ δασεῖαι καὶ ηὐλόγησεν αὐτόν 24 καὶ εἶπεν σὺ εἶ ὁ υἱός μου Ησαυ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ἐγώ 25 καὶ εἶπεν προσάγαγέ μοι καὶ φάγομαι ἀπὸ τῆς θήρας σου τέκνον ἵνα εὐλογήσῃ σε ἡ ψυχή μου καὶ προσήγαγεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἔφαγεν καὶ εἰσήνεγκεν αὐτῷ οἶνον καὶ ἔπιεν

18 So he brought them in, and said, Father. Yes, my son, he said; who is it? 19 I am Esau, said Jacob, Esau, thy first-born; I have done thy bidding. Rise up, I pray thee, sit at table, and eat this venison of mine, and give me a father’s blessing. 20 Why, answered Isaac, how didst thou come to find thy quarry in so short a time, my son? It was God’s pleasure, said he, to send it in my way. 21 Then Isaac said, Come near, and let me feel thee, to make sure whether thou art my son Esau or not. 22 So he went close to his father; and he, upon feeling the touch of him, said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau. 23 There was no recognizing Jacob, since his hands were hairy like Esau’s hands, and he must needs give his blessing. 24 Thou art my son, he said, my son Esau? Yes, he answered, I am. 25 Why then, said he, bring it here; let me eat my son’s venison, and give him a father’s blessing. So he ate what was brought him, and Jacob offered him wine too, and he drank.

18 Quibus illatis, dixit: Pater mi? At ille respondit: Audio. Quis es tu, fili mi? 19 Dixitque Jacob: Ego sum primogenitus tuus Esau: feci sicut præcepisti mihi: surge, sede, et comede de venatione mea, ut benedicat mihi anima tua. 20 Rursumque Isaac ad filium suum: Quomodo, inquit, tam cito invenire potuisti, fili mi? Qui respondit: Voluntas Dei fuit ut cito occurreret mihi quod volebam. 21 Dixitque Isaac: Accede huc, ut tangam te, fili mi, et probem utrum tu sis filius meus Esau, an non. 22 Accessit ille ad patrem, et palpato eo, dixit Isaac: Vox quidem, vox Jacob est: sed manus, manus sunt Esau. 23 Et non cognovit eum, quia pilosæ manus similitudinem majoris expresserant. Benedicens ergo illi, 24 ait: Tu es filius meus Esau? Respondit: Ego sum. 25 At ille: Affer mihi, inquit, cibos de venatione tua, fili mi, ut benedicat tibi anima mea. Quos cum oblatos comedisset, obtulit ei etiam vinum. Quo hausto,

26 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ισαακ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ ἔγγισόν μοι καὶ φίλησόν με τέκνον 27 καὶ ἐγγίσας ἐφίλησεν αὐτόν καὶ ὠσφράνθη τὴν ὀσμὴν τῶν ἱματίων αὐτοῦ καὶ ηὐλόγησεν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπεν ἰδοὺ ὀσμὴ τοῦ υἱοῦ μου ὡς ὀσμὴ ἀγροῦ πλήρους ὃν ηὐλόγησεν κύριος 28 καὶ δῴη σοι ὁ θεὸς ἀπὸ τῆς δρόσου τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς πιότητος τῆς γῆς καὶ πλῆθος σίτου καὶ οἴνου 29 καὶ δουλευσάτωσάν σοι ἔθνη καὶ προσκυνήσουσίν σοι ἄρχοντες καὶ γίνου κύριος τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου καὶ προσκυνήσουσίν σοι οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ πατρός σου ὁ καταρώμενός σε ἐπικατάρατος ὁ δὲ εὐλογῶν σε εὐλογημένος 30 καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὸ παύσασθαι Ισαακ εὐλογοῦντα Ιακωβ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐγένετο ὡς ἐξῆλθεν Ιακωβ ἀπὸ προσώπου Ισαακ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ Ησαυ ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ ἦλθεν ἀπὸ τῆς θήρας 31 καὶ ἐποίησεν καὶ αὐτὸς ἐδέσματα καὶ προσήνεγκεν τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν τῷ πατρί ἀναστήτω ὁ πατήρ μου καὶ φαγέτω τῆς θήρας τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ ὅπως εὐλογήσῃ με ἡ ψυχή σου 32 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ισαακ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ τίς εἶ σύ ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ υἱός σου ὁ πρωτότοκος Ησαυ 33 ἐξέστη δὲ Ισαακ ἔκστασιν μεγάλην σφόδρα καὶ εἶπεν τίς οὖν ὁ θηρεύσας μοι θήραν καὶ εἰσενέγκας μοι καὶ ἔφαγον ἀπὸ πάντων πρὸ τοῦ σε ἐλθεῖν καὶ ηὐλόγησα αὐτόν καὶ εὐλογημένος ἔστω

26 Then he said to Jacob, Come here, my son, and kiss me. 27 And when he came near, and kissed him, all at once Isaac caught the smell of his garments, and this was the blessing he gave him: How it breathes about this son of mine, the fragrance of earth when the Lord’s blessing is on it! 28 God give thee dew from heaven and fruitful soil, corn and wine in plenty. 29 Let nations serve thee, and peoples bow before thee; mayst thou be lord over thy brethren, receive obeisance from thy own mother’s sons; a curse on those who curse, a blessing on those who bless thee! 30 Scarcely had Isaac finished speaking, and Jacob gone out, when Esau returned. 31 And now he brought his father a dish of venison; Rise up, father, he said, eat thy son’s venison, and give me a father’s blessing. 32 Why, who art thou? Isaac asked. I am thy son, he answered, thy first-born son Esau. 33 At this, quite overcome with dread, astonished past belief, Isaac cried out, Why then, who is it that has already brought me venison from the chase? Before ever thou camest back to me, I have eaten my fill and to him given my blessing; on him the blessing will come.

26 dixit ad eum: Accede ad me, et da mihi osculum, fili mi. 27 Accessit, et osculatus est eum. Statimque ut sensit vestimentorum illius fragrantiam, benedicens illi, ait:

Ecce odor filii mei
sicut odor agri pleni,
cui benedixit Dominus. 28
Det tibi Deus de rore cæli
et de pinguedine terræ
abundantiam frumenti et vini. 29
Et serviant tibi populi,
et adorent te tribus:
esto dominus fratrum tuorum,
et incurventur ante te filii matris tuæ:
qui maledixerit tibi, sit ille maledictus,
et qui benedixerit tibi, benedictionibus repleatur. 30 Vix Isaac sermonem impleverat, et egresso Jacob foras, venit Esau, 31 coctosque de venatione cibos intulit patri, dicens: Surge, pater mi, et comede de venatione filii tui, ut benedicat mihi anima tua. 32 Dixitque illi Isaac: Quis enim es tu? Qui respondit: Ego sum filius tuus primogenitus Esau. 33 Expavit Isaac stupore vehementi: et ultra quam credi potest admirans, ait: Quis igitur ille est qui dudum captam venationem attulit mihi, et comedi ex omnibus priusquam tu venires; benedixique ei, et erit benedictus?

34 ἐγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἤκουσεν Ησαυ τὰ ῥήματα Ισαακ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ ἀνεβόησεν φωνὴν μεγάλην καὶ πικρὰν σφόδρα καὶ εἶπεν εὐλόγησον δὴ κἀμέ πάτερ 35 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ἐλθὼν ὁ ἀδελφός σου μετὰ δόλου ἔλαβεν τὴν εὐλογίαν σου 36 καὶ εἶπεν δικαίως ἐκλήθη τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ιακωβ ἐπτέρνικεν γάρ με ἤδη δεύτερον τοῦτο τά τε πρωτοτόκιά μου εἴληφεν καὶ νῦν εἴληφεν τὴν εὐλογίαν μου καὶ εἶπεν Ησαυ τῷ πατρὶ αὐτοῦ οὐχ ὑπελίπω μοι εὐλογίαν πάτερ 37 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ισαακ εἶπεν τῷ Ησαυ εἰ κύριον αὐτὸν ἐποίησά σου καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐποίησα αὐτοῦ οἰκέτας σίτῳ καὶ οἴνῳ ἐστήρισα αὐτόν σοὶ δὲ τί ποιήσω τέκνον 38 εἶπεν δὲ Ησαυ πρὸς τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ μὴ εὐλογία μία σοί ἐστιν πάτερ εὐλόγησον δὴ κἀμέ πάτερ κατανυχθέντος δὲ Ισαακ ἀνεβόησεν φωνὴν Ησαυ καὶ ἔκλαυσεν 39 ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Ισαακ ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἰδοὺ ἀπὸ τῆς πιότητος τῆς γῆς ἔσται ἡ κατοίκησίς σου καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς δρόσου τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἄνωθεν 40 καὶ ἐπὶ τῇ μαχαίρῃ σου ζήσῃ καὶ τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου δουλεύσεις ἔσται δὲ ἡνίκα ἐὰν καθέλῃς καὶ ἐκλύσεις τὸν ζυγὸν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ τραχήλου σου

34 Esau, on hearing his father’s words, broke out into a loud cry of anguish; Thy blessing, father, for me also thy blessing! 35 Thy brother, it seems, Isaac answered, came in disguised; he has snatched thy blessing from thee. 36 Why, said Esau, he is well named Jacob, the Supplanter; first he took away my birthright, and now he has stolen my blessing. And then, turning to his father, he asked, Hast thou no blessing left, then, a blessing for me too? 37 Nay, answered Isaac, I have designated him thy master; I have condemned all his brethren to do him service; I have assured him of corn and wine; what claim have I left myself to make for thee, my son? 38 But Esau pleaded still, Hast thou only one blessing to give, father? I pray thee, bless me too. And he could not control his voice, but wept aloud. 39 Then Isaac said, greatly moved, All thy blessing shall come from earth’s fruitfulness, and from the dew of heaven.[1] 40 Thy sword shall be the breath of life to thee, but thou shalt be subject to thy brother, until the day comes when thou wilt rebel, and wilt shake off his yoke from thy neck.

34 Auditis Esau sermonibus patris, irrugiit clamore magno: et consternatus, ait: Benedic etiam et mihi, pater mi. 35 Qui ait: Venit germanus tuus fraudulenter, et accepit benedictionem tuam. 36 At ille subjunxit: Juste vocatum est nomen ejus Jacob: supplantavit enim me en altera vice: primogenita mea ante tulit, et nunc secundo surripuit benedictionem meam. Rursumque ad patrem: Numquid non reservasti, ait, et mihi benedictionem? 37 Respondit Isaac: Dominum tuum illum constitui, et omnes fratres ejus servituti illius subjugavi; frumento et vino stabilivi eum: et tibi post hæc, fili mi, ultra quid faciam? 38 Cui Esau: Num unam, inquit, tantum benedictionem habes, pater? mihi quoque obsecro ut benedicas. Cumque ejulatu magno fleret, 39 motus Isaac, dixit ad eum:

In pinguedine terræ,
et in rore cæli desuper, 40
erit benedictio tua.
Vives in gladio, et fratri tuo servies:
tempusque veniet, cum excutias et solvas jugum ejus de cervicibus tuis.

41 καὶ ἐνεκότει Ησαυ τῷ Ιακωβ περὶ τῆς εὐλογίας ἧς εὐλόγησεν αὐτὸν ὁ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ εἶπεν δὲ Ησαυ ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ ἐγγισάτωσαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ πένθους τοῦ πατρός μου ἵνα ἀποκτείνω Ιακωβ τὸν ἀδελφόν μου 42 ἀπηγγέλη δὲ Ρεβεκκα τὰ ῥήματα Ησαυ τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτῆς τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου καὶ πέμψασα ἐκάλεσεν Ιακωβ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν νεώτερον καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ ἰδοὺ Ησαυ ὁ ἀδελφός σου ἀπειλεῖ σοι τοῦ ἀποκτεῖναί σε 43 νῦν οὖν τέκνον ἄκουσόν μου τῆς φωνῆς καὶ ἀναστὰς ἀπόδραθι εἰς τὴν Μεσοποταμίαν πρὸς Λαβαν τὸν ἀδελφόν μου εἰς Χαρραν 44 καὶ οἴκησον με{T'} αὐτοῦ ἡμέρας τινὰς ἕως τοῦ ἀποστρέψαι τὸν θυμὸν 45 καὶ τὴν ὀργὴν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ ἐπιλάθηται ἃ πεποίηκας αὐτῷ καὶ ἀποστείλασα μεταπέμψομαί σε ἐκεῖθεν μήποτε ἀτεκνωθῶ ἀπὸ τῶν δύο ὑμῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ μιᾷ 46 εἶπεν δὲ Ρεβεκκα πρὸς Ισαακ προσώχθικα τῇ ζωῇ μου διὰ τὰς θυγατέρας τῶν υἱῶν Χετ εἰ λήμψεται Ιακωβ γυναῖκα ἀπὸ τῶν θυγατέρων τῆς γῆς ταύτης ἵνα τί μοι ζῆν

41 But ever Esau bore Jacob a grudge over the blessing he had won from their father. Soon, he thought, the days will come when we shall be mourning for my father’s death; that is the time to kill my brother. 42 News of this reached Rebecca; so she sent for her son Jacob, and told him, Thy brother Esau is threatening thy life. 43 Thou must needs do what I bid thee, my son; bestir thyself, and take refuge in Haran with thy uncle, Laban. 44 There thou must dwell for a short while, till thy brother’s anger dies down. 45 Soon his rage will cool, and he will forget the wrong thou hast done him; then I will send there, and bring thee back home; only begone; shall I let one day’s work rob me of both my sons?[2] 46 And to Isaac Rebecca said, I am weary of life, with these Hethite women about me; if Jacob weds a bride of this native stock, may I not live to see it!

41 Oderat ergo semper Esau Jacob pro benedictione qua benedixerat ei pater: dixitque in corde suo: Venient dies luctus patris mei, et occidam Jacob fratrem meum. 42 Nuntiata sunt hæc Rebeccæ: quæ mittens et vocans Jacob filium suum, dixit ad eum: Ecce Esau frater tuus minatur ut occidat te. 43 Nunc ergo, fili mi, audi vocem meam, et consurgens fuge ad Laban fratrem meum in Haran: 44 habitabisque cum eo dies paucos, donec requiescat furor fratris tui, 45 et cesset indignatio ejus, obliviscaturque eorum quæ fecisti in eum: postea mittam, et adducam te inde huc: cur utroque orbabor filio in uno die? 46 Dixitque Rebecca ad Isaac: Tædet me vitæ meæ propter filias Heth: si acceperit Jacob uxorem de stirpe hujus terræ, nolo vivere.

[1] ‘Thy blessing’; in the Hebrew text, ‘thy dwelling-place’. Some think the meaning is, ‘Thy dwelling-place shall be far from earth’s fruitfulness, and the dew of heaven’, since these advantages had already been pledged to Jacob (verse 28 above).

[2] Rebecca probably means that if Esau killed Jacob he would become a fugitive, like Cain, and thus be lost to her.
