1 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ Ααρων λέγων 2 λαβὲ τὸ κεφάλαιον τῶν υἱῶν Κααθ ἐκ μέσου υἱῶν Λευι κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν 3 ἀπὸ εἴκοσι καὶ πέντε ἐτῶν καὶ ἐπάνω καὶ ἕως πεντήκοντα ἐτῶν πᾶς ὁ εἰσπορευόμενος λειτουργεῖν ποιῆσαι πάντα τὰ ἔργα ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου 4 καὶ ταῦτα τὰ ἔργα τῶν υἱῶν Κααθ ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου ἅγιον τῶν ἁγίων 5 καὶ εἰσελεύσεται Ααρων καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ ὅταν ἐξαίρῃ ἡ παρεμβολή καὶ καθελοῦσιν τὸ καταπέτασμα τὸ συσκιάζον καὶ κατακαλύψουσιν ἐν αὐτῷ τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ μαρτυρίου 6 καὶ ἐπιθήσουσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ κατακάλυμμα δέρμα ὑακίνθινον καὶ ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν ἱμάτιον ὅλον ὑακίνθινον ἄνωθεν καὶ διεμβαλοῦσιν τοὺς ἀναφορεῖς 7 καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν τράπεζαν τὴν προκειμένην ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν ἱμάτιον ὁλοπόρφυρον καὶ τὰ τρυβλία καὶ τὰς θυίσκας καὶ τοὺς κυάθους καὶ τὰ σπονδεῖα ἐν οἷς σπένδει καὶ οἱ ἄρτοι οἱ διὰ παντὸς ἐ{P'} αὐτῆς ἔσονται 8 καὶ ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν ἱμάτιον κόκκινον καὶ καλύψουσιν αὐτὴν καλύμματι δερματίνῳ ὑακινθίνῳ καὶ διεμβαλοῦσιν δ{I'} αὐτῆς τοὺς ἀναφορεῖς 9 καὶ λήμψονται ἱμάτιον ὑακίνθινον καὶ καλύψουσιν τὴν λυχνίαν τὴν φωτίζουσαν καὶ τοὺς λύχνους αὐτῆς καὶ τὰς λαβίδας αὐτῆς καὶ τὰς ἐπαρυστρίδας αὐτῆς καὶ πάντα τὰ ἀγγεῖα τοῦ ἐλαίου οἷς λειτουργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτοῖς 10 καὶ ἐμβαλοῦσιν αὐτὴν καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτῆς εἰς κάλυμμα δερμάτινον ὑακίνθινον καὶ ἐπιθήσουσιν αὐτὴν ἐ{P'} ἀναφορέων 11 καὶ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον τὸ χρυσοῦν ἐπικαλύψουσιν ἱμάτιον ὑακίνθινον καὶ καλύψουσιν αὐτὸ καλύμματι δερματίνῳ ὑακινθίνῳ καὶ διεμβαλοῦσιν τοὺς ἀναφορεῖς αὐτοῦ 12 καὶ λήμψονται πάντα τὰ σκεύη τὰ λειτουργικά ὅσα λειτουργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐν τοῖς ἁγίοις καὶ ἐμβαλοῦσιν εἰς ἱμάτιον ὑακίνθινον καὶ καλύψουσιν αὐτὰ καλύμματι δερματίνῳ ὑακινθίνῳ καὶ ἐπιθήσουσιν ἐπὶ ἀναφορεῖς 13 καὶ τὸν καλυπτῆρα ἐπιθήσει ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον καὶ ἐπικαλύψουσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ ἱμάτιον ὁλοπόρφυρον 14 καὶ ἐπιθήσουσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ πάντα τὰ σκεύη ὅσοις λειτουργοῦσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ τὰ πυρεῖα καὶ τὰς κρεάγρας καὶ τὰς φιάλας καὶ τὸν καλυπτῆρα καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου καὶ ἐπιβαλοῦσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτὸ κάλυμμα δερμάτινον ὑακίνθινον καὶ διεμβαλοῦσιν τοὺς ἀναφορεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ λήμψονται ἱμάτιον πορφυροῦν καὶ συγκαλύψουσιν τὸν λουτῆρα καὶ τὴν βάσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐμβαλοῦσιν αὐτὰ εἰς κάλυμμα δερμάτινον ὑακίνθινον καὶ ἐπιθήσουσιν ἐπὶ ἀναφορεῖς 15 καὶ συντελέσουσιν Ααρων καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καλύπτοντες τὰ ἅγια καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τὰ ἅγια ἐν τῷ ἐξαίρειν τὴν παρεμβολήν καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εἰσελεύσονται υἱοὶ Κααθ αἴρειν καὶ οὐχ ἅψονται τῶν ἁγίων ἵνα μὴ ἀποθάνωσιν ταῦτα ἀροῦσιν οἱ υἱοὶ Κααθ ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου 16 ἐπίσκοπος Ελεαζαρ υἱὸς Ααρων τοῦ ἱερέως τὸ ἔλαιον τοῦ φωτὸς καὶ τὸ θυμίαμα τῆς συνθέσεως καὶ ἡ θυσία ἡ κα{Q'} ἡμέραν καὶ τὸ ἔλαιον τῆς χρίσεως ἡ ἐπισκοπὴ ὅλης τῆς σκηνῆς καὶ ὅσα ἐστὶν ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν τῷ ἁγίῳ ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔργοις 17 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν καὶ Ααρων λέγων 18 μὴ ὀλεθρεύσητε τῆς φυλῆς τὸν δῆμον τὸν Κααθ ἐκ μέσου τῶν Λευιτῶν 19 τοῦτο ποιήσατε αὐτοῖς καὶ ζήσονται καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνωσιν προσπορευομένων αὐτῶν πρὸς τὰ ἅγια τῶν ἁγίων Ααρων καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ προσπορευέσθωσαν καὶ καταστήσουσιν αὐτοὺς ἕκαστον κατὰ τὴν ἀναφορὰν αὐτοῦ 20 καὶ οὐ μὴ εἰσέλθωσιν ἰδεῖν ἐξάπινα τὰ ἅγια καὶ ἀποθανοῦνται

1 Then the Lord bade Moses and Aaron 2 register the sons of Caath, household by household, family by family, apart from the rest of the Levites; 3 men between the ages of thirty and fifty, who went into the tabernacle to wait and work there. 4 The sons of Caath, he said, there in the tabernacle, are to have the holiest task of all. 5 When the order is given for marching, it is for Aaron and his sons to go in and take down the veil at the sanctuary entrance, in which they will wrap up the ark; 6 then they will enfold it again in a covering of skins dyed violet, and spread a cloth over it all of blue, and so they will put the poles in to carry it. 7 They will spread another blue cloth over the table, which will have its cups and bowls and dishes on it, and goblets for pouring out libations, and the bread set forth there as always; 8 a red cloth over that, and a covering dyed violet, and put the poles in. 9 Then, with a blue cloth, they will cover the lamp-stand, with its lamps, tongs, snuffers, and all the phials of oil for feeding the lamps, 10 enfolding all in skins dyed violet, and so they will make it ready for carrying. 11 Then a blue cloth, and a covering of violet skins, for the golden altar; 12 and all the appurtenances of sanctuary worship they shall cover up in the same way, and make these, too, ready for carrying. 13 The brazen altar they will rid of its ashes, and wrap it in a purple cloth, 14 enclosing with it all the appurtenances used for its ceremonies, fire-pans, flesh-hooks, forks, pot-hooks and shovels; they must wrap up all the appurtenances of this altar in a covering of violet skins, and then put poles through the rings of the altar itself. 15 Then when Aaron and his sons have wrapped up the sanctuary and all its appurtenances ready for the march, the sons of Caath will enter and carry them away in their wrappings; they are not to touch the things of the sanctuary, on pain of death. Such charge will the sons of Caath have over the tabernacle that attests my covenant; 16 and Eleazar, son of the high priest Aaron, will be in command of them. Under his care is the oil for feeding the lamps, and the spices for the incense; under his care the continual sacrifice, and the oil used for anointing, and all that concerns the worship paid in the tabernacle, and all the furniture of the sanctuary. 17 This warning, too, the Lord gave to Moses and Aaron; 18 Would you have the family of Caath lost to Levi’s tribe? 19 If you value their lives, order their doings thus; death is the penalty, if they should touch what has been set apart for holy uses. Only Aaron and his sons may enter; and they will direct what is to be the task of each Levite, what burden he is to carry. 20 None must pry into the secrets of the shrine while they are yet uncovered, on pain of death.

1 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron, dicens: 2 Tolle summam filiorum Caath de medio Levitarum per domos et familias suas, 3 a trigesimo anno et supra, usque ad quinquagesimum annum, omnium qui ingrediuntur ut stent et ministrent in tabernaculo fœderis. 4 Hic est cultus filiorum Caath: tabernaculum fœderis, et Sanctum sanctorum 5 ingredientur Aaron et filii ejus, quando movenda sunt castra, et deponent velum quod pendet ante fores, involventque eo arcam testimonii, 6 et operient rursum velamine janthinarum pellium, extendentque desuper pallium totum hyacinthinum, et inducent vectes. 7 Mensam quoque propositionis involvent hyacinthino pallio, et ponent cum ea thuribula et mortariola, cyathos et crateras ad liba fundenda: panes semper in ea erunt: 8 extendentque desuper pallium coccineum, quod rursum operient velamento janthinarum pellium, et inducent vectes. 9 Sument et pallium hyacinthinum, quo operient candelabrum cum lucernis et forcipibus suis et emunctoriis et cunctis vasis olei, quæ ad concinnandas lucernas necessaria sunt: 10 et super omnia ponent operimentum janthinarum pellium, et inducent vectes. 11 Necnon et altare aureum involvent hyacinthino vestimento, et extendent desuper operimentum janthinarum pellium, inducentque vectes. 12 Omnia vasa, quibus ministratur in sanctuario, involvent hyacinthino pallio, et extendent desuper operimentum janthinarum pellium, inducentque vectes. 13 Sed et altare mundabunt cinere, et involvent illud purpureo vestimento, 14 ponentque cum eo omnia vasa, quibus in ministerio ejus utuntur, id est, ignium receptacula, fuscinulas ac tridentes, uncinos et batilla. Cuncta vasa altaris operient simul velamine janthinarum pellium, et inducent vectes. 15 Cumque involverint Aaron et filii ejus sanctuarium et omnia vasa ejus in commotione castrorum, tunc intrabunt filii Caath ut portent involuta: et non tangent vasa sanctuarii, ne moriantur. Ista sunt onera filiorum Caath in tabernaculo fœderis: 16 super quos erit Eleazar filius Aaron sacerdotis, ad cujus curam pertinet oleum ad concinnandas lucernas, et compositionis incensum, et sacrificium, quod semper offertur, et oleum unctionis, et quidquid ad cultum tabernaculi pertinet, omniumque vasorum, quæ in sanctuario sunt. 17 Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron, dicens: 18 Nolite perdere populum Caath de medio Levitarum: 19 sed hoc facite eis, ut vivant, et non moriantur, si tetigerint Sancta sanctorum. Aaron et filii ejus intrabunt, ipsique disponent opera singulorum, et divident quid portare quis debeat. 20 Alii nulla curiositate videant quæ sunt in sanctuario priusquam involvantur, alioquin morientur.

21 καὶ ἐλάλησεν κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν λέγων 22 λαβὲ τὴν ἀρχὴν τῶν υἱῶν Γεδσων καὶ τούτους κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν 23 ἀπὸ πεντεκαιεικοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω ἕως πεντηκονταετοῦς ἐπίσκεψαι αὐτούς πᾶς ὁ εἰσπορευόμενος λειτουργεῖν καὶ ποιεῖν τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου 24 αὕτη ἡ λειτουργία τοῦ δήμου τοῦ Γεδσων λειτουργεῖν καὶ αἴρειν 25 καὶ ἀρεῖ τὰς δέρρεις τῆς σκηνῆς καὶ τὴν σκηνὴν τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ τὸ κάλυμμα αὐτῆς καὶ τὸ κάλυμμα τὸ ὑακίνθινον τὸ ὂν ἐ{P'} αὐτῆς ἄνωθεν καὶ τὸ κάλυμμα τῆς θύρας τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου 26 καὶ τὰ ἱστία τῆς αὐλῆς ὅσα ἐπὶ τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ τὰ περισσὰ καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τὰ λειτουργικά ὅσα λειτουργοῦσιν ἐν αὐτοῖς ποιήσουσιν 27 κατὰ στόμα Ααρων καὶ τῶν υἱῶν αὐτοῦ ἔσται ἡ λειτουργία τῶν υἱῶν Γεδσων κατὰ πάσας τὰς λειτουργίας αὐτῶν καὶ κατὰ πάντα τὰ ἀρτὰ δ{I'} αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπισκέψῃ αὐτοὺς ἐξ ὀνομάτων πάντα τὰ ἀρτὰ ὑ{P'} αὐτῶν 28 αὕτη ἡ λειτουργία τῶν υἱῶν Γεδσων ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου καὶ ἡ φυλακὴ αὐτῶν ἐν χειρὶ Ιθαμαρ τοῦ υἱοῦ Ααρων τοῦ ἱερέως 29 υἱοὶ Μεραρι κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν κα{T'} οἴκους πατριῶν αὐτῶν ἐπισκέψασθε αὐτούς 30 ἀπὸ πεντεκαιεικοσαετοῦς καὶ ἐπάνω ἕως πεντηκονταετοῦς ἐπισκέψασθε αὐτούς πᾶς ὁ εἰσπορευόμενος λειτουργεῖν τὰ ἔργα τῆς σκηνῆς τοῦ μαρτυρίου 31 καὶ ταῦτα τὰ φυλάγματα τῶν αἰρομένων ὑ{P'} αὐτῶν κατὰ πάντα τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου τὰς κεφαλίδας τῆς σκηνῆς καὶ τοὺς μοχλοὺς καὶ τοὺς στύλους αὐτῆς καὶ τὰς βάσεις αὐτῆς καὶ τὸ κατακάλυμμα καὶ αἱ βάσεις αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ στύλοι αὐτῶν καὶ τὸ κατακάλυμμα τῆς θύρας τῆς σκηνῆς 32 καὶ τοὺς στύλους τῆς αὐλῆς κύκλῳ καὶ αἱ βάσεις αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς στύλους τοῦ καταπετάσματος τῆς πύλης τῆς αὐλῆς καὶ τὰς βάσεις αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς πασσάλους αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς κάλους αὐτῶν καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτῶν καὶ πάντα τὰ λειτουργήματα αὐτῶν ἐξ ὀνομάτων ἐπισκέψασθε αὐτοὺς καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τῆς φυλακῆς τῶν αἰρομένων ὑ{P'} αὐτῶν 33 αὕτη ἡ λειτουργία δήμου υἱῶν Μεραρι ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ σκηνῇ τοῦ μαρτυρίου ἐν χειρὶ Ιθαμαρ υἱοῦ Ααρων τοῦ ἱερέως

21 Then the Lord bade Moses 22 register the sons of Gerson, by households and families; 23 men between the ages of thirty and fifty, who went into the tabernacle to work there. 24 The task of these sons of Gerson, he told them, 25 is to carry the curtains of the tabernacle, and the second covering that makes a roof over the place of covenant, and the purple canopy over all, and the screen at the entrance of the tabernacle; 26 the hangings, too, of the court, and the screen at the entrance of the court, opposite the tabernacle.[1] All that belongs to the altar, and all the ropes, and the appurtenances that go with them, 27 shall be carried by the family of Gerson, as Aaron and his sons shall direct; they will make known what burden falls to each. 28 This is the charge which the sons of Gerson will have over the tabernacle which attests my covenant, and Ithamar, son of the high priest Aaron, will have the disposal of them. 29 The households and families of Merari’s line must also be registered; 30 men between the ages of thirty and fifty, who go about their work in the shrine of the covenant. 31 They have the charge of carrying the frames and poles of the tabernacle, its posts with their sockets; 32 posts, too, sockets and pegs and ropes for the court round about. All such appurtenances shall be handed over to them one by one, to carry with them. 33 Such duties and tasks the sons of Merari will have, in the tabernacle that attests my covenant, and these too will be at the disposal of Ithamar, son of the high priest Aaron.

Numera omnes qui ingrediuntur et ministrant in tabernaculo fœderis. 24 Hoc est officium familiæ Gersonitarum, 25 ut portent cortinas tabernaculi et tectum fœderis, operimentum aliud, et super omnia velamen janthinum tentoriumque quod pendet in introitu tabernaculi fœderis, 26 cortinas atrii, et velum in introitu quod est ante tabernaculum. Omnia quæ ad altare pertinent, funiculos, et vasa ministerii, 27 jubente Aaron et filiis ejus, portabunt filii Gerson: et scient singuli cui debeant oneri mancipari. 28 Hic est cultus familiæ Gersonitarum in tabernaculo fœderis, eruntque sub manu Ithamar filii Aaron sacerdotis. 29 Filios quoque Merari per familias et domos patrum suorum recensebis, 30 a triginta annis et supra, usque ad annos quinquaginta, omnes qui ingrediuntur ad officium ministerii sui et cultum fœderis testimonii. 31 Hæc sunt onera eorum: portabunt tabulas tabernaculi et vectes ejus, columnas ac bases earum, 32 columnas quoque atrii per circuitum cum basibus et paxillis et funibus suis. Omnia vasa et supellectilem ad numerum accipient, sicque portabunt. 33 Hoc est officium familiæ Meraritarum et ministerium in tabernaculo fœderis: eruntque sub manu Ithamar filii Aaron sacerdotis.

34 So Moses and Aaron and the chieftains registered the households and families of Caath, 35 all the tabernacle servants between the ages of thirty and fifty; 36 of these there were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 38 Then the Gersonites; 40 of these there were two thousand six hundred and thirty. 42 Then the Merarites; 44 of these there were three thousand two hundred.[2] 46 So that the full register of the Levites, which Moses and Aaron and the chieftains made, household by household and family by family, 47 men between thirty and fifty, fit to carry burdens and do the work of the tabernacle, 48 contained eight thousand five hundred and eighty names altogether. 49 And Moses, as the Lord had bidden him, registered all their names with the duties and burdens that fell to each.

34 Recensuerunt igitur Moyses et Aaron et principes synagogæ filios Caath per cognationes et domos patrum suorum, 35 a triginta annis et supra, usque ad annum quinquagesimum, omnes qui ingrediuntur ad ministerium tabernaculi fœderis: 36 et inventi sunt duo millia septingenti quinquaginta. Hic est numerus populi Caath qui intrant tabernaculum fœderis: hos numeravit Moyses et Aaron juxta sermonem Domini per manum Moysi. 38 Numerati sunt et filii Gerson per cognationes et domos patrum suorum, a triginta annos et supra, usque ad quinquagesimum annum, omnes qui ingrediuntur ut ministrent in tabernaculo fœderis: 40 et inventi sunt duo millia sexcenti triginta. Hic est populus Gersonitarum, quos numeraverunt Moyses et Aaron juxta verbum Domini. 42 Numerati sunt et filii Merari per cognationes et domos patrum suorum, a triginta annis et supra, usque ad annum quinquagesimum, omnes qui ingrediuntur ad explendos ritus tabernaculi fœderis: 44 et inventi sunt tria millia ducenti. Hic est numerus filiorum Merari, quos recensuerunt Moyses et Aaron juxta imperium Domini per manum Moysi. 46 Omnes qui recensiti sunt de Levitis, et quos recenseri fecit ad nomen Moyses et Aaron, et principes Israël per cognationes et domos patrum suorum, 47 a triginta annis et supra, usque ad annum quinquagesimum, ingredientes ad ministerium tabernaculi, et onera portanda, 48 fuerunt simul octo millia quingenti octoginta. 49 Juxta verbum Domini recensuit eos Moyses, unumquemque juxta officium et onera sua, sicut præceperat ei Dominus.
