1 καὶ προσήλθοσαν οἱ ἀρχιπατριῶται τῶν υἱῶν Λευι πρὸς Ελεαζαρ τὸν ἱερέα καὶ πρὸς Ἰησοῦν τὸν τοῦ Ναυη καὶ πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιφύλους πατριῶν ἐκ τῶν φυλῶν Ισραηλ 2 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἐν Σηλω ἐν γῇ Χανααν λέγοντες ἐνετείλατο κύριος ἐν χειρὶ Μωυσῆ δοῦναι ἡμῖν πόλεις κατοικεῖν καὶ τὰ περισπόρια τοῖς κτήνεσιν ἡμῶν 3 καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ τοῖς Λευίταις ἐν τῷ κατακληρονομεῖν διὰ προστάγματος κυρίου τὰς πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν

1 Meanwhile the heads of the Levite households approached the high priest Eleazar, and Josue the son of Nun, and the clan chiefs of Israel, 2 all gathered there at Silo now that Chanaan was won. It was the Lord’s command to Moses, they said, that we should have cities to live in, with lands round them on which we could pasture our beasts. 3 And so, in pursuance of the Lord’s command, cities and lands were granted to them by the sons of Israel.

4 καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ὁ κλῆρος τῷ δήμῳ Κααθ καὶ ἐγένετο τοῖς υἱοῖς Ααρων τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν τοῖς Λευίταις ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ιουδα καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Συμεων καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Βενιαμιν κληρωτὶ πόλεις δέκα τρεῖς 5 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Κααθ τοῖς καταλελειμμένοις ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Εφραιμ καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Δαν καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασση κληρωτὶ πόλεις δέκα 6 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Γεδσων ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Ισσαχαρ καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Ασηρ καὶ ἀπὸ τῆς φυλῆς Νεφθαλι καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασση ἐν τῷ Βασαν πόλεις δέκα τρεῖς 7 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Μεραρι κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ρουβην καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Γαδ καὶ ἀπὸ φυλῆς Ζαβουλων κληρωτὶ πόλεις δώδεκα 8 καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ τοῖς Λευίταις τὰς πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν ὃν τρόπον ἐνετείλατο κύριος τῷ Μωυσῇ κληρωτί

4 The lot fell first on the line of Caath. Among these, the family of the high priest Aaron were to receive thirteen cities from Juda, Simeon, and Benjamin; 5 the rest of the Caathites, Levites that were not of the priestly family, ten cities from Ephraim, Dan, and the western half of Manasses. 6 Issachar, Aser, Nephthali, and the eastern half of Manasses, in Basan, were to give the line of Gerson thirteen cities; 7 Ruben, Gad, and Zabulon to give the line of Merari twelve cities. 8 Thus was the command the Lord had given through Moses carried out, and the Israelites handed over to the Levites the cities and lands allotted to them.

9 These are the names of the cities which Josue handed over in Juda and Simeon 10 to the family of Aaron, whose lot came first among the descendants of Caath. 11 One was Cariath-Arbe, called after the father of Enac; Hebron, that is, in the hill-country of Juda, with lands round it. 12 (He had given the countryside, with the villages in it, to Caleb the son of Jephone as his portion; 13 but Hebron itself, the city of refuge, with the lands close to it, he gave to the family of Aaron.) The others were Lobna, and the lands round Lobna, 14 Jether, Esthemo, 15 Holon, Dabir, 16 Ain, Jeta, and Bethsames, with the lands round them; nine cities out of the two tribes aforesaid. 17 From the lands of Benjamin he handed over Gabaon, Gabae, 18 Anathoth and Almon, four city-enclosures. 19 Thus Aaron’s family had thirteen city-enclosures in all; 20 the Levites of Caath’s line 21 received from Ephraim, one city of refuge, Sichem, and besides this, Gazer, 22 Cibsaim and Bethoron, four city-enclosures. 23 From Dan, Eltheco, Gabathon, 24 Aialon, and Gethremmon, four city-enclosures. 25 From western Manasses, Thanach and their own town of Gethremmon,[1] two city-enclosures. 26 Thus there were ten city-enclosures to the Caathites of lower rank.

27 καὶ τοῖς υἱοῖς Γεδσων τοῖς Λευίταις ἐκ τοῦ ἡμίσους φυλῆς Μανασση τὰς πόλεις τὰς ἀφωρισμένας τοῖς φονεύσασι τὴν Γαυλων ἐν τῇ Βασανίτιδι καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Βοσοραν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις δύο 28 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ισσαχαρ τὴν Κισων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Δεββα καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ 29 καὶ τὴν Ρεμμαθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Πηγὴν γραμμάτων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τέσσαρες 30 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ασηρ τὴν Βασελλαν καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Δαββων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ 31 καὶ Χελκατ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Ρααβ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τέσσαρες 32 καὶ ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Νεφθαλι τὴν πόλιν τὴν ἀφωρισμένην τῷ φονεύσαντι τὴν Καδες ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ τὴν Εμμαθ καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ καὶ Θεμμων καὶ τὰ ἀφωρισμένα αὐτῇ πόλεις τρεῖς 33 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις τοῦ Γεδσων κατὰ δήμους αὐτῶν πόλεις δέκα τρεῖς

27 The Levites of Gerson’s line received from eastern Manasses one city of refuge, Gaulon in Basan; and also Bosram; two city-enclosures. From Issachar, 28 Cesion and Dabereth, 29 Jaramoth and Engannim; four city-enclosures. 30 From Aser, Masal, Abdon, 31 Helcath and Rohob; four city-enclosures. 32 From Nephthali, one city of refuge, Cedes in the pale of Nephthali; also Hammoth-Dor and Carthan; three city-enclosures. 33 Thus there were thirteen city-enclosures granted to the Gersonites.

34 The Merarites’ families, all Levites of lower rank, received from Zabulon Jecnam, Cartha, 35 Damna and Naalol; four city-enclosures. 36 From Ruben on the east side of Jordan, there was one city of refuge, Bosor out in the wilderness; and four other city-enclosures were also taken out, Misor, Jaser, Jethson and Mephaath.[2] 37 From Gad, one city of refuge, Ramoth in Galaad; also Manaim, Hesebon and Jaser, four city-enclosures; 38 thus there were twelve city-enclosures granted to the families of Merari.

39 Altogether, then, the Levites had forty-eight cities, distributed among the various possessions of Israel, 40 and lands attached to them; each family among them had its own domain.

41 πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις τῶν Λευιτῶν ἐν μέσῳ κατασχέσεως υἱῶν Ισραηλ τεσσαράκοντα ὀκτὼ πόλεις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια αὐτῶν 42 κύκλῳ τῶν πόλεων τούτων πόλις καὶ τὰ περισπόρια κύκλῳ τῆς πόλεως πάσαις ταῖς πόλεσιν ταύταις καὶ συνετέλεσεν Ἰησοῦς διαμερίσας τὴν γῆν ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτῶν καὶ ἔδωκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ισραηλ μερίδα τῷ Ἰησοῖ κατὰ πρόσταγμα κυρίου ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ τὴν πόλιν ἣν ᾐτήσατο τὴν Θαμνασαραχ ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ ὄρει Εφραιμ καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν Ἰησοῦς τὴν πόλιν καὶ ᾤκησεν ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰησοῦς τὰς μαχαίρας τὰς πετρίνας ἐν αἷς περιέτεμεν τοὺς υἱοὺς Ισραηλ τοὺς γενομένους ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ ἔθηκεν αὐτὰς ἐν Θαμνασαραχ 43 καὶ ἔδωκεν κύριος τῷ Ισραηλ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἣν ὤμοσεν δοῦναι τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν καὶ κατεκληρονόμησαν αὐτὴν καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ κατέπαυσεν αὐτοὺς κύριος κυκλόθεν καθότι ὤμοσεν τοῖς πατράσιν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀνέστη οὐθεὶς κατενώπιον αὐτῶν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν πάντας τοὺς ἐχθροὺς αὐτῶν παρέδωκεν κύριος εἰς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν οὐ διέπεσεν ἀπὸ πάντων τῶν ῥημάτων τῶν καλῶν ὧν ἐλάλησεν κύριος τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ πάντα παρεγένετο

41 Thus the Lord God made over to Israel the whole of the territory he had promised to their fathers; they had a home of their own to settle in, 42 secure from attack by any of the nations which surrounded them, since these no longer ventured to offer resistance, but submitted to their rule. 43 No word of the promises which the Lord had made to them remained unfulfilled.

41 Itaque civitates universæ Levitarum in medio possessionis filiorum Israël fuerunt quadraginta octo 42 cum suburbanis suis, singulæ per familias distributæ. 43 Deditque Dominus Deus Israëli omnem terram, quam traditurum se patribus eorum juraverat: et possederunt illam, atque habitaverunt in ea. Ne unum quidem verbum, quod illis præstiturum se esse promiserat, irritum fuit, sed rebus expleta sunt omnia.

[1] Both the Hebrew text and the Latin version seem to imply that there were two separate cities called Gethremmon; but this may be due to an oversight in copying. The Septuagint Greek has a different name in this verse, Jebatha (or perhaps Bethsa); a different name again, Baalam, is found in I Par. 6.70.

[2] The Hebrew text is here uncertain; both the Septuagint Greek and Latin versions give five cities instead of four, if Bosor is included. Probably Jaser has been copied into this verse by mistake, and belongs really to the verse following (under Gad).
