1 καὶ ἦλθεν Ροβοαμ εἰς Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ἐξεκκλησίασεν τὸν Ιουδαν καὶ Βενιαμιν ἑκατὸν ὀγδοήκοντα χιλιάδας νεανίσκων ποιούντων πόλεμον καὶ ἐπολέμει πρὸς Ισραηλ τοῦ ἐπιστρέψαι τὴν βασιλείαν τῷ Ροβοαμ 2 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρὸς Σαμαιαν ἄνθρωπον τοῦ θεοῦ λέγων 3 εἰπὸν πρὸς Ροβοαμ τὸν τοῦ Σαλωμων καὶ πρὸς πάντα Ιουδαν καὶ Βενιαμιν λέγων 4 τάδε λέγει κύριος οὐκ ἀναβήσεσθε καὶ οὐ πολεμήσετε πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν ἀποστρέφετε ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ ὅτι πα{R'} ἐμοῦ ἐγένετο τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο καὶ ἐπήκουσαν τοῦ λόγου κυρίου καὶ ἀπεστράφησαν τοῦ μὴ πορευθῆναι ἐπὶ Ιεροβοαμ

1 Upon reaching Jerusalem, Roboam mustered the whole forces of Juda and Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand tried warriors, to do battle with the Israelites and recover his kingdom. 2 But the Lord sent word to the prophet Semeias, 3 Here is a message for Roboam, son of Solomon, king of Juda, and for all the Israelites of Juda and Benjamin. 4 You are not to march out, the Lord says, and make war upon your own brethren; go home, every man of you; all this is my doing. Learning that this was the Lord’s will, all went home, and never marched out against Jeroboam.[1]

1 Venit autem Roboam in Jerusalem, et convocavit universam domum Juda et Benjamin, centum octoginta millia electorum atque bellantium, ut dimicaret contra Israël, et converteret ad se regnum suum. 2 Factusque est sermo Domini ad Semeiam hominem Dei, dicens: 3 Loquere ad Roboam filium Salomonis regem Juda, et ad universum Israël, qui est in Juda et Benjamin: 4 Hæc dicit Dominus: Non ascendetis, neque pugnabitis contra fratres vestros: revertatur unusquisque in domum suam, quia mea hoc gestum est voluntate. Qui cum audissent sermonem Domini, reversi sunt, nec perrexerunt contra Jeroboam.

5 καὶ κατῴκησεν Ροβοαμ εἰς Ιερουσαλημ καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν πόλεις τειχήρεις ἐν τῇ Ιουδαίᾳ 6 καὶ ᾠκοδόμησεν τὴν Βαιθλεεμ καὶ τὴν Αιταμ καὶ τὴν Θεκωε 7 καὶ τὴν Βαιθσουρα καὶ τὴν Σοκχωθ καὶ τὴν Οδολλαμ 8 καὶ τὴν Γεθ καὶ τὴν Μαρισαν καὶ τὴν Ζιφ 9 καὶ τὴν Αδωραιμ καὶ τὴν Λαχις καὶ τὴν Αζηκα 10 καὶ τὴν Σαραα καὶ τὴν Αιαλων καὶ τὴν Χεβρων ἥ ἐστιν τοῦ Ιουδα καὶ Βενιαμιν πόλεις τειχήρεις 11 καὶ ὠχύρωσεν αὐτὰς τείχεσιν καὶ ἔδωκεν ἐν αὐταῖς ἡγουμένους καὶ παραθέσεις βρωμάτων ἔλαιον καὶ οἶνον 12 κατὰ πόλιν καὶ κατὰ πόλιν θυρεοὺς καὶ δόρατα καὶ κατίσχυσεν αὐτὰς εἰς πλῆθος σφόδρα καὶ ἦσαν αὐτῷ Ιουδα καὶ Βενιαμιν 13 καὶ οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ οἱ Λευῖται οἳ ἦσαν ἐν παντὶ Ισραηλ συνήχθησαν πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐκ πάντων τῶν ὁρίων 14 ὅτι ἐγκατέλιπον οἱ Λευῖται τὰ σκηνώματα τῆς κατασχέσεως αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν πρὸς Ιουδαν εἰς Ιερουσαλημ ὅτι ἐξέβαλεν αὐτοὺς Ιεροβοαμ καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ τοῦ μὴ λειτουργεῖν κυρίῳ 15 καὶ κατέστησεν ἑαυτῷ ἱερεῖς τῶν ὑψηλῶν καὶ τοῖς εἰδώλοις καὶ τοῖς ματαίοις καὶ τοῖς μόσχοις ἃ ἐποίησεν Ιεροβοαμ 16 καὶ ἐξέβαλεν αὐτοὺς ἀπὸ φυλῶν Ισραηλ οἳ ἔδωκαν καρδίαν αὐτῶν τοῦ ζητῆσαι κύριον θεὸν Ισραηλ καὶ ἦλθον εἰς Ιερουσαλημ θῦσαι κυρίῳ θεῷ τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν 17 καὶ κατίσχυσαν τὴν βασιλείαν Ιουδα καὶ κατίσχυσαν Ροβοαμ τὸν τοῦ Σαλωμων εἰς ἔτη τρία ὅτι ἐπορεύθη ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς Δαυιδ καὶ Σαλωμων ἔτη τρία

5 Roboam had his capital at Jerusalem, but there were many other cities in Juda he fortified, 6 Bethlehem, Etam, Thecue, 7 Bethsur, Socho, Odollam, 8 Geth, Maresa, Ziph, 9 Aduram, Lachis, Azecha, 10 Saraa, Aialon and Hebron. All these cities of Juda and Benjamin were fastnesses of his, 11 each of them walled about, and furnished with a commander, and stores of food, wine and oil, 12 and an armoury full of shields and spears; no pains did he spare in making them secure. Juda and Benjamin were his subjects, 13 and from their homes in every part of Israel the priests and Levites rallied to him. 14 Precincts and lands must be left behind, to Juda and Jerusalem they must betake themselves, now that Jeroboam and his heirs would have none of their divinely appointed ministrations; 15 Jeroboam must have his own priests, to serve the hill-shrines, and the devil-gods, and the calves he had made. 16 Nay, in all the tribes of Israel there were dedicated hearts that had recourse still to the Lord God of Israel; these, when they had victims to offer, would present themselves at Jerusalem, before the Lord God of their fathers. 17 These added strength to the kingdom of Juda, and lent courage to Roboam, the son of Solomon, but only for three years. Only for three years did they follow loyally in the steps of David and Solomon.

5 Habitavit autem Roboam in Jerusalem, et ædificavit civitates muratas in Juda. 6 Exstruxitque Bethlehem, et Etam, et Thecue, 7 Bethsur quoque, et Socho, et Odollam, 8 necnon et Geth, et Maresa, et Ziph, 9 sed et Aduram, et Lachis, et Azeca, 10 Saraa quoque, et Ajalon, et Hebron, quæ erant in Juda et Benjamin, civitates munitissimas. 11 Cumque clausisset eas muris, posuit in eis principes, ciborumque horrea, hoc est, olei, et vini. 12 Sed et in singulis urbibus fecit armamentarium scutorum et hastarum, firmavitque eas summa diligentia, et imperavit super Judam et Benjamin. 13 Sacerdotes autem et Levitæ qui erant in universo Israël, venerunt ad eum de cunctis sedibus suis, 14 relinquentes suburbana et possessiones suas, et transeuntes ad Judam et Jerusalem: eo quod abjecisset eos Jeroboam et posteri ejus, ne sacerdotio Domini fungerentur. 15 Qui constituit sibi sacerdotes excelsorum, et dæmoniorum, vitulorumque quos fecerat. 16 Sed et de cunctis tribubus Israël, quicumque dederant cor suum ut quærerent Dominum Deum Israël, venerunt in Jerusalem ad immolandum victimas suas coram Domino Deo patrum suorum. 17 Et roboraverunt regnum Juda, et confirmaverunt Roboam filium Salomonis per tres annos: ambulaverunt enim in viis David et Salomonis, annis tantum tribus.

18 καὶ ἔλαβεν ἑαυτῷ Ροβοαμ γυναῖκα τὴν Μολλαθ θυγατέρα Ιεριμουθ υἱοῦ Δαυιδ Αβαιαν θυγατέρα Ελιαβ τοῦ Ιεσσαι 19 καὶ ἔτεκεν αὐτῷ υἱοὺς τὸν Ιαους καὶ τὸν Σαμαριαν καὶ τὸν Ροολλαμ 20 καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἔλαβεν ἑαυτῷ τὴν Μααχα θυγατέρα Αβεσσαλωμ καὶ ἔτεκεν αὐτῷ τὸν Αβια καὶ τὸν Ιεθθι καὶ τὸν Ζιζα καὶ τὸν Εμμωθ 21 καὶ ἠγάπησεν Ροβοαμ τὴν Μααχαν θυγατέρα Αβεσσαλωμ ὑπὲρ πάσας τὰς γυναῖκας αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰς παλλακὰς αὐτοῦ ὅτι γυναῖκας δέκα ὀκτὼ εἶχεν καὶ παλλακὰς τριάκοντα καὶ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς εἴκοσι ὀκτὼ καὶ θυγατέρας ἑξήκοντα 22 καὶ κατέστησεν εἰς ἄρχοντα Ροβοαμ τὸν Αβια τὸν τῆς Μααχα εἰς ἡγούμενον ἐν τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ ὅτι βασιλεῦσαι διενοεῖτο αὐτόν 23 καὶ ηὐξήθη παρὰ πάντας τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτοῦ ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς ὁρίοις Ιουδα καὶ Βενιαμιν καὶ ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν ταῖς ὀχυραῖς καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐταῖς τροφὰς πλῆθος πολὺ καὶ ᾐτήσατο πλῆθος γυναικῶν

18 Roboam married, first Mahalath, daughter of David’s son Jerimoth, then Abihail, daughter of Jesse’s son Eliab, 19 the mother of Jehus, Somoria and Zoöm, 20 then Absalom’s daughter Maacha, who bore him Abia, Ethai, Ziza and Salomith. 21 Roboam had eighteen wives and sixty concubines, who bore him twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters; but Maacha, Absalom’s daughter, he loved best of all. 22 And it was to Maacha’s son Abia that he gave the foremost place among the royal princes, meaning to make him king. 23 This prince was abler than the rest, and had more influence up and down Juda and Benjamin, as well as in the garrison cities. All alike must be well cared for, and wives a many found for the royal house.[2]

18 Duxit autem Roboam uxorem Mahalath filiam Jerimoth filii David: Abihail quoque filiam Eliab filii Isai, 19 quæ peperit ei filios Jehus, et Somoriam, et Zoom. 20 Post hanc quoque accepit Maacha filiam Absalom, quæ peperit ei Abia, et Ethai, et Ziza, et Salomith. 21 Amavit autem Roboam Maacha filiam Absalom super omnes uxores suas et concubinas: nam uxores decem et octo duxerat, concubinas autem sexaginta: et genuit viginti octo filios, et sexaginta filias. 22 Constituit vero in capite Abiam filium Maacha ducem super omnes fratres suos: ipsum enim regem facere cogitabat, 23 quia sapientior fuit, et potentior super omnes filios ejus, et in cunctis finibus Juda et Benjamin, et in universis civitatibus muratis: præbuitque eis escas plurimas, et multas petivit uxores.

[2] The sense of this verse is obscure, and the text doubtful. Some understand it as meaning that king Roboam distributed his sons among the various districts of his kingdom. It is not clear whether it was Roboam or Abia who demanded many wives, and whether this was done, by one or the other of them, for himself or for the royal princes.
