1 καὶ εἶπεν πρός με υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου κατάφαγε τὴν κεφαλίδα ταύτην καὶ πορεύθητι καὶ λάλησον τοῖς υἱοῖς Ισραηλ 2 καὶ διήνοιξα τὸ στόμα μου καὶ ἐψώμισέν με τὴν κεφαλίδα 3 καὶ εἶπεν πρός με υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου τὸ στόμα σου φάγεται καὶ ἡ κοιλία σου πλησθήσεται τῆς κεφαλίδος ταύτης τῆς δεδομένης εἰς σέ καὶ ἔφαγον αὐτήν καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ στόματί μου ὡς μέλι γλυκάζον 4 καὶ εἶπεν πρός με υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου βάδιζε εἴσελθε πρὸς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Ισραηλ καὶ λάλησον τοὺς λόγους μου πρὸς αὐτούς 5 διότι οὐ πρὸς λαὸν βαθύχειλον καὶ βαρύγλωσσον σὺ ἐξαποστέλλῃ πρὸς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Ισραηλ 6 οὐδὲ πρὸς λαοὺς πολλοὺς ἀλλοφώνους ἢ ἀλλογλώσσους οὐδὲ στιβαροὺς τῇ γλώσσῃ ὄντας ὧν οὐκ ἀκούσῃ τοὺς λόγους αὐτῶν καὶ εἰ πρὸς τοιούτους ἐξαπέστειλά σε οὗτοι ἂν εἰσήκουσάν σου 7 ὁ δὲ οἶκος τοῦ Ισραηλ οὐ μὴ θελήσωσιν εἰσακοῦσαί σου διότι οὐ βούλονται εἰσακούειν μου ὅτι πᾶς ὁ οἶκος Ισραηλ φιλόνεικοί εἰσιν καὶ σκληροκάρδιοι 8 καὶ ἰδοὺ δέδωκα τὸ πρόσωπόν σου δυνατὸν κατέναντι τῶν προσώπων αὐτῶν καὶ τὸ νεῖκός σου κατισχύσω κατέναντι τοῦ νείκους αὐτῶν 9 καὶ ἔσται διὰ παντὸς κραταιότερον πέτρας μὴ φοβηθῇς ἀ{P'} αὐτῶν μηδὲ πτοηθῇς ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν διότι οἶκος παραπικραίνων ἐστίν

1 Son of man, he told me, eat thou must what eat thou canst; here is this scroll for thy eating. After that, go and give my message to the sons of Israel. 2 Thereupon I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat, 3 promising me safe digestion and a full belly with the gift; and indeed, it was sweet as honey when I ate it. 4 Now, son of man, said he, to the men of Israel betake thee, and give them my message. 5 Are they strange folk that lisp and stammer,[1] these men of Israel? Ah, no; 6 nations there are a many that lisp and stammer, past thy understanding, but I am sending thee to Israel instead. These might have listened to thee;[2] 7 hearing from Israel thou shalt have none; my word goes ever unheeded, so stubborn of forehead they are and so hard-hearted, all the brood of them. 8 But see, I have given thee strength of brow, hardness of forehead, that shall outmatch theirs; 9 unyielding as flint or adamant thou shalt face them. Fear them not, never let their frown daunt thee, this brood of rebels.

1 Et dixit ad me: Fili hominis, quodcumque inveneris, comede: comede volumen istud, et vadens loquere ad filios Israël. 2 Et aperui os meum, et cibavit me volumine illo: 3 et dixit ad me: Fili hominis, venter tuus comedet, et viscera tua complebuntur volumine isto quod ego do tibi. Et comedi illud, et factum est in ore meo sicut mel dulce. 4 Et dixit ad me: Fili hominis, vade ad domum Israël, et loqueris verba mea ad eos. 5 Non enim ad populum profundi sermonis et ignotæ linguæ tu mitteris ad domum Israël: 6 neque ad populos multos profundi sermonis et ignotæ linguæ, quorum non possis audire sermones: et si ad illos mittereris, ipsi audirent te: 7 domus autem Israël nolunt audire te, quia nolunt audire me: omnis quippe domus Israël attrita fronte est, et duro corde. 8 Ecce dedi faciem tuam valentiorem faciebus eorum, et frontem tuam duriorem frontibus eorum: 9 ut adamantem et ut silicem dedi faciem tuam: ne timeas eos, neque metuas a facie eorum, quia domus exasperans est.

10 καὶ εἶπεν πρός με υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου πάντας τοὺς λόγους οὓς λελάληκα μετὰ σοῦ λαβὲ εἰς τὴν καρδίαν σου καὶ τοῖς ὠσίν σου ἄκουε 11 καὶ βάδιζε εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν πρὸς τοὺς υἱοὺς τοῦ λαοῦ σου καὶ λαλήσεις πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος ἐὰν ἄρα ἀκούσωσιν ἐὰν ἄρα ἐνδῶσιν 12 καὶ ἀνέλαβέν με πνεῦμα καὶ ἤκουσα κατόπισθέν μου φωνὴν σεισμοῦ μεγάλου εὐλογημένη ἡ δόξα κυρίου ἐκ τοῦ τόπου αὐτοῦ 13 καὶ εἶδον φωνὴν πτερύγων τῶν ζῴων πτερυσσομένων ἑτέρα πρὸς τὴν ἑτέραν καὶ φωνὴ τῶν τροχῶν ἐχομένη αὐτῶν καὶ φωνὴ τοῦ σεισμοῦ 14 καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα ἐξῆρέν με καὶ ἀνέλαβέν με καὶ ἐπορεύθην ἐν ὁρμῇ τοῦ πνεύματός μου καὶ χεὶρ κυρίου ἐγένετο ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ κραταιά 15 καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν μετέωρος καὶ περιῆλθον τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐπὶ τοῦ ποταμοῦ τοῦ Χοβαρ τοὺς ὄντας ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐκάθισα ἐκεῖ ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας ἀναστρεφόμενος ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν

10 Then he said to me, Son of man, all the words I tell thee heed and hear; 11 then to captive Israel betake thee, and give them thy message in the name of the Lord God, hear they or deny thee hearing. 12 And with that, a sudden transport seized me, and as I went, I heard the noise of a great stir behind me. … Blessed be the glory of the Lord … from the place where he was.[3] 13 Beat of wing against wing as the living figures moved onwards, and whirr of the wheels that followed them, great stirring there was all about me; 14 and I, in a transport borne up and on, set out on my journey, unwillingly enough, and vexed at heart, but the Lord’s hand was there to hold me to my purpose. 15 So I made my way to the settlement of exiles at Tel-Abib,[4] near the river Chobar; and when I had found them, I sat there for seven days in their company, dumb all the while with grief.

10 Et dixit ad me: Fili hominis, omnes sermones meos quos ego loquor ad te, assume in corde tuo, et auribus tuis audi: 11 et vade, ingredere ad transmigrationem, ad filios populi tui, et loqueris ad eos: et dices eis: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: si forte audiant et quiescant. 12 Et assumpsit me spiritus, et audivi post me vocem commotionis magnæ: Benedicta gloria Domini de loco suo: 13 et vocem alarum animalium percutientium alteram ad alteram, et vocem rotarum sequentium animalia, et vocem commotionis magnæ. 14 Spiritus quoque levavit me, et assumpsit me: et abii amarus in indignatione spiritus mei: manus enim Domini erat mecum, confortans me. 15 Et veni ad transmigrationem, ad acervum novarum frugum, ad eos qui habitabant juxta flumen Chobar: et sedi ubi illi sedebant, et mansi ibi septem diebus mœrens in medio eorum.

16 καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ τὰς ἑπτὰ ἡμέρας λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 17 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου σκοπὸν δέδωκά σε τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ καὶ ἀκούσῃ ἐκ στόματός μου λόγον καὶ διαπειλήσῃ αὐτοῖς πα{R'} ἐμοῦ 18 ἐν τῷ λέγειν με τῷ ἀνόμῳ θανάτῳ θανατωθήσῃ καὶ οὐ διεστείλω αὐτῷ οὐδὲ ἐλάλησας τοῦ διαστείλασθαι τῷ ἀνόμῳ ἀποστρέψαι ἀπὸ τῶν ὁδῶν αὐτοῦ τοῦ ζῆσαι αὐτόν ὁ ἄνομος ἐκεῖνος τῇ ἀδικίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἀποθανεῖται καὶ τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐκ χειρός σου ἐκζητήσω 19 καὶ σὺ ἐὰν διαστείλῃ τῷ ἀνόμῳ καὶ μὴ ἀποστρέψῃ ἀπὸ τῆς ἀνομίας αὐτοῦ καὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ αὐτοῦ ὁ ἄνομος ἐκεῖνος ἐν τῇ ἀδικίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἀποθανεῖται καὶ σὺ τὴν ψυχήν σου ῥύσῃ 20 καὶ ἐν τῷ ἀποστρέφειν δίκαιον ἀπὸ τῶν δικαιοσυνῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ποιήσῃ παράπτωμα καὶ δώσω τὴν βάσανον εἰς πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ αὐτὸς ἀποθανεῖται ὅτι οὐ διεστείλω αὐτῷ καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἁμαρτίαις αὐτοῦ ἀποθανεῖται διότι οὐ μὴ μνησθῶσιν αἱ δικαιοσύναι αὐτοῦ ἃς ἐποίησεν καὶ τὸ αἷμα αὐτοῦ ἐκ τῆς χειρός σου ἐκζητήσω 21 σὺ δὲ ἐὰν διαστείλῃ τῷ δικαίῳ τοῦ μὴ ἁμαρτεῖν καὶ αὐτὸς μὴ ἁμάρτῃ ὁ δίκαιος ζωῇ ζήσεται ὅτι διεστείλω αὐτῷ καὶ σὺ τὴν σεαυτοῦ ψυχὴν ῥύσῃ

16 Then, when seven days had passed, the Lord’s word came to me. 17 Son of man, he told me, I am posting thee here as a sentry, to give the sons of Israel warning; no message I send thee but thou must pass it on in my name. 18 When I threaten I the sinner with doom of death, it is for thee to give him word, and warn him, as he loves his life, to have done with sinning. If not, he shall die as he deserves, but for his undoing thyself shalt be called to account. 19 If thou warn him, and leave his rebellious sinning he will not, die he shall as he deserves, and thou go free. 20 Or if the upright man leaves his innocence, and I take him unawares in his wrong-doing, dies he for want of warning? Die he shall, his good deeds all forgotten, but thou for his undoing shalt be called to account. 21 Thine to warn the upright man against the marring of his innocence; and he, sin avoiding, shall owe his life to thy remonstrance; thy duty is done.[5]

16 Cum autem pertransissent septem dies, factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens: 17 Fili hominis, speculatorem dedi te domui Israël, et audies de ore meo verbum, et annuntiabis eis ex me. 18 Si, dicente me ad impium: Morte morieris, non annuntiaveris ei, neque locutus fueris ut avertatur a via sua impia et vivat, ipse impius in iniquitate sua morietur, sanguinem autem ejus de manu tua requiram. 19 Si autem tu annuntiaveris impio, et ille non fuerit conversus ab impietate sua et a via sua impia, ipse quidem in iniquitate sua morietur: tu autem animam tuam liberasti. 20 Sed et si conversus justus a justitia sua fuerit, et fecerit iniquitatem, ponam offendiculum coram eo: ipse morietur quia non annuntiasti ei. In peccato suo morietur, et non erunt in memoria justitiæ ejus quas fecit: sanguinem vero ejus de manu tua requiram. 21 Si autem tu annuntiaveris justo ut non peccet justus, et ille non peccaverit, vivens vivet, quia annuntiasti ei, et tu animam tuam liberasti.

22 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ χεὶρ κυρίου καὶ εἶπεν πρός με ἀνάστηθι καὶ ἔξελθε εἰς τὸ πεδίον καὶ ἐκεῖ λαληθήσεται πρὸς σέ 23 καὶ ἀνέστην καὶ ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὸ πεδίον καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐκεῖ δόξα κυρίου εἱστήκει καθὼς ἡ ὅρασις καὶ καθὼς ἡ δόξα ἣν εἶδον ἐπὶ τοῦ ποταμοῦ τοῦ Χοβαρ καὶ πίπτω ἐπὶ πρόσωπόν μου 24 καὶ ἦλθεν ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ πνεῦμα καὶ ἔστησέν με ἐπὶ πόδας μου καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρός με καὶ εἶπέν μοι εἴσελθε καὶ ἐγκλείσθητι ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ οἴκου σου 25 καὶ σύ υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου ἰδοὺ δέδονται ἐπὶ σὲ δεσμοί καὶ δήσουσίν σε ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐξέλθῃς ἐκ μέσου αὐτῶν 26 καὶ τὴν γλῶσσάν σου συνδήσω καὶ ἀποκωφωθήσῃ καὶ οὐκ ἔσῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς ἄνδρα ἐλέγχοντα διότι οἶκος παραπικραίνων ἐστίν 27 καὶ ἐν τῷ λαλεῖν με πρὸς σὲ ἀνοίξω τὸ στόμα σου καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος ὁ ἀκούων ἀκουέτω καὶ ὁ ἀπειθῶν ἀπειθείτω διότι οἶκος παραπικραίνων ἐστίν

22 Then the power of the Lord came over me, bidding me rise up and keep tryst with him, out in the open plain. 23 Rise up I did, and when I reached the open plain, there was the glory of the Lord rising above it, such as I had seen it by the banks of Chobar; and I fell face to earth. 24 But a divine force mastered me and raised me to my feet again. Now go within doors, he said, and shut thyself in there … 25 And thou, son of man … here are bonds confining thee; closely thy fellow-countrymen shall keep thee imprisoned, so that thou canst not escape from them. 26 And I, meanwhile, will keep tongue of thine fast fixed in thy mouth; dumb thou shalt be, when thou wouldst fain expostulate with a rebellious brood. 27 Then, when my message I give thee, I will unseal thy lips, and thou shalt speak to that rebellious brood in the name of the Lord God, hear they or deny thee hearing.[6]

22 Et facta est super me manus Domini, et dixit ad me: Surgens egredere in campum, et ibi loquar tecum. 23 Et surgens egressus sum in campum: et ecce ibi gloria Domini stabat, quasi gloria quam vidi juxta fluvium Chobar: et cecidi in faciem meam. 24 Et ingressus est in me spiritus, et statuit me super pedes meos, et locutus est mihi, et dixit ad me: Ingredere, et includere in medio domus tuæ. 25 Et tu, fili hominis, ecce data sunt super te vincula, et ligabunt te in eis, et non egredieris de medio eorum. 26 Et linguam tuam adhærere faciam palato tuo, et eris mutus, nec quasi vir objurgans, quia domus exasperans est. 27 Cum autem locutus fuero tibi, aperiam os tuum, et dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Qui audit, audiat, et qui quiescit, quiescat: quia domus exasperans est.

[1] Literally, ‘of deep speech and unknown tongue’; in the Hebrew text, ‘of deep lips and heavy tongue’. The language of the other Semitic races suggested an attempt to talk Hebrew under difficulties.

[2] Literally, in the Latin, ‘If I were sending thee to these, they would be listening to thee’. The sense of the Hebrew text is probably, ‘But no, I am sending thee to these (the Israelites). These (the other nations) would be listening to thee’.

[3] If one consonant is altered, the Hebrew text would give the sense, ‘I heard the noise of a great stir behind me, as the glory of the Lord rose up from the place where it was’.

[4] Tel-Abib (not the modern Tel-Aviv, in Palestine) is translated, instead of being transliterated, in the Latin version; ‘to the Mound of New Crops’.

[5] vv. 16-21. The sense of these verses, and in great part the actual language of them, can be found repeated in ch. 33, and some think they have been misplaced here through an error.

[6] vv. 24-27. There has perhaps been some fault in the manuscript transmission of these verses, which run very awkwardly. The Hebrew text has ‘so that thou canst not go out among them’ instead of ‘so that thou canst not escape from them’.
