1 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 2 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου ἐν μέσῳ τῶν ἀδικιῶν αὐτῶν σὺ κατοικεῖς οἳ ἔχουσιν ὀφθαλμοὺς τοῦ βλέπειν καὶ οὐ βλέπουσιν καὶ ὦτα ἔχουσιν τοῦ ἀκούειν καὶ οὐκ ἀκούουσιν διότι οἶκος παραπικραίνων ἐστίν 3 καὶ σύ υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου ποίησον σεαυτῷ σκεύη αἰχμαλωσίας ἡμέρας ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν καὶ αἰχμαλωτευθήσῃ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου σου εἰς ἕτερον τόπον ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ὅπως ἴδωσιν διότι οἶκος παραπικραίνων ἐστίν 4 καὶ ἐξοίσεις τὰ σκεύη σου ὡς σκεύη αἰχμαλωσίας ἡμέρας κα{T'} ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν καὶ σὺ ἐξελεύσῃ ἑσπέρας ὡς ἐκπορεύεται αἰχμάλωτος 5 ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν διόρυξον σεαυτῷ εἰς τὸν τοῖχον καὶ διεξελεύσῃ δ{I'} αὐτοῦ 6 ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν ἐ{P'} ὤμων ἀναλημφθήσῃ καὶ κεκρυμμένος ἐξελεύσῃ τὸ πρόσωπόν σου συγκαλύψεις καὶ οὐ μὴ ἴδῃς τὴν γῆν διότι τέρας δέδωκά σε τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ

1 Word came to me from the Lord: 2 Son of man, thou dwellest among a brood of rebels, that have eyes to see with, ears to hear with, yet see and hear nothing, so bent are they on rebellion. 3 Do thou, then, son of man, provide thee with an exile’s pack, and while it is daylight, let them see thee marching to and fro; in their full view, if those rebellious eyes will but mark it, remove from one place to another, 4 carrying those goods of thine with thee, as if ready for a journey. Then, at nightfall, take thy leave in public, as if thou wert going into exile. 5 Let them see thee dig a hole through the wall of thy house, to escape by; 6 let them see thee carried out on men’s shoulders, darkness all around, blindfold, so that thou canst not view the land about thee. A portent of doom thou shalt be to the men of Israel.[1]

1 Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: 2 Fili hominis, in medio domus exasperantis tu habitas: qui oculos habent ad videndum, et non vident, et aures ad audiendum, et non audiunt: quia domus exasperans est. 3 Tu ergo, fili hominis, fac tibi vasa transmigrationis, et transmigrabis per diem coram eis. Transmigrabis autem de loco tuo ad locum alterum in conspectu eorum, si forte aspiciant, quia domus exasperans est: 4 et efferes foras vasa tua quasi vasa transmigrantis per diem in conspectu eorum: tu autem egredieris vespere coram eis, sicut egreditur migrans. 5 Ante oculos eorum perfode tibi parietem, et egredieris per eum. 6 In conspectu eorum in humeris portaberis; in caligine effereris: faciem tuam velabis, et non videbis terram, quia portentum dedi te domui Israël.

7 καὶ ἐποίησα οὕτως κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ἐνετείλατό μοι καὶ σκεύη ἐξήνεγκα ὡς σκεύη αἰχμαλωσίας ἡμέρας καὶ ἑσπέρας διώρυξα ἐμαυτῷ τὸν τοῖχον καὶ κεκρυμμένος ἐξῆλθον ἐ{P'} ὤμων ἀνελήμφθην ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν 8 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με τὸ πρωὶ λέγων 9 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου οὐκ εἶπαν πρὸς σὲ ὁ οἶκος τοῦ Ισραηλ οἶκος ὁ παραπικραίνων τί σὺ ποιεῖς 10 εἰπὸν πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος ὁ ἄρχων καὶ ὁ ἀφηγούμενος ἐν Ιερουσαλημ καὶ παντὶ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ οἵ εἰσιν ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν 11 εἰπὸν ὅτι ἐγὼ τέρατα ποιῶ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς ὃν τρόπον πεποίηκα οὕτως ἔσται αὐτοῖς ἐν μετοικεσίᾳ καὶ ἐν αἰχμαλωσίᾳ πορεύσονται 12 καὶ ὁ ἄρχων ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν ἐ{P'} ὤμων ἀρθήσεται καὶ κεκρυμμένος ἐξελεύσεται διὰ τοῦ τοίχου καὶ διορύξει τοῦ ἐξελθεῖν αὐτὸν δ{I'} αὐτοῦ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ συγκαλύψει ὅπως μὴ ὁραθῇ ὀφθαλμῷ καὶ αὐτὸς τὴν γῆν οὐκ ὄψεται 13 καὶ ἐκπετάσω τὸ δίκτυόν μου ἐ{P'} αὐτόν καὶ συλλημφθήσεται ἐν τῇ περιοχῇ μου καὶ ἄξω αὐτὸν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα εἰς γῆν Χαλδαίων καὶ αὐτὴν οὐκ ὄψεται καὶ ἐκεῖ τελευτήσει 14 καὶ πάντας τοὺς κύκλῳ αὐτοῦ τοὺς βοηθοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀντιλαμβανομένους αὐτοῦ διασπερῶ εἰς πάντα ἄνεμον καὶ ῥομφαίαν ἐκκενώσω ὀπίσω αὐτῶν 15 καὶ γνώσονται διότι ἐγὼ κύριος ἐν τῷ διασκορπίσαι με αὐτοὺς ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ διασπερῶ αὐτοὺς ἐν ταῖς χώραις 16 καὶ ὑπολείψομαι ἐξ αὐτῶν ἄνδρας ἀριθμῷ ἐκ ῥομφαίας καὶ ἐκ λιμοῦ καὶ ἐκ θανάτου ὅπως ἐκδιηγῶνται πάσας τὰς ἀνομίας αὐτῶν ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν οὗ εἰσήλθοσαν ἐκεῖ καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγὼ κύριος

7 His bidding was done; while daylight served, I brought my exile’s pack out into the open; then, at nightfall, dug wall through and went out on my dark journey, borne on men’s shoulders, plain to view. 8 And word came to me from the Lord: 9 What of the rebel brood? Have the Israelites asked to know what thou meanest? 10 This tell them from the Lord God, A princely burden![2] Here went the prince that rules over Jerusalem, and over all such Israelites as dwell in their native country. 11 Tell them, This is your own doom I foreshadow; the men of Israel shall fare as I do, exile and prison their lot, 12 and he who rules among them shall be fain to escape in the darkness, borne on men’s shoulders. They shall breach wall to make way for him, and he shall go with his face covered, so that he will look on the land no more. 13 But my net is spread; I have him in the noose; Babylon for him, the Chaldaean country for him; that land, too, he shall not see, yet die in that land he must.[3] 14 Retinue and bodyguard of his, nay, all his army, I will scatter to the four winds, with my naked sword at their heels. 15 Then at last they shall learn what manner of God I am, when they find themselves lost among the nations, dispersed all the world over! 16 A few shall survive, in despite of sword, famine, and pestilence, to tell these new neighbours of theirs what foul deeds they did; so shall the Gentiles[4] learn to know me.

7 Feci ergo sicut præceperat mihi Dominus: vasa mea protuli quasi vasa transmigrantis per diem, et vespere perfodi mihi parietem manu: et in caligine egressus sum, in humeris portatus in conspectu eorum. 8 Et factus est sermo Domini mane ad me, dicens: 9 Fili hominis, numquid non dixerunt ad te domus Israël, domus exasperans: Quid tu facis? 10 Dic ad eos:

Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Super ducem onus istud, qui est in Jerusalem,
et super omnem domum Israël, quæ est in medio eorum. 11 Dic:

Ego portentum vestrum:
quomodo feci, sic fiet illis:
in transmigrationem et in captivitatem ibunt. 12
Et dux qui est in medio eorum,
in humeris portabitur; in caligine egredietur:
parietem perfodient, ut educant eum;
facies ejus operietur, ut non videat oculo terram. 13
Et extendam rete meum super eum,
et capietur in sagena mea:
et adducam eum in Babylonem, in terram Chaldæorum,
et ipsam non videbit:
ibique morietur. 14
Et omnes qui circa eum sunt,
præsidium ejus, et agmina ejus,
dispergam in omnem ventum,
et gladium evaginabo post eos. 15
Et scient quia ego Dominus,
quando dispersero illos in gentibus,
et disseminavero eos in terris. 16
Et relinquam ex eis viros paucos
a gladio, et fame, et pestilentia,
ut enarrent omnia scelera eorum
in gentibus ad quas ingredientur,
et scient quia ego Dominus.

17 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 18 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου τὸν ἄρτον σου με{T'} ὀδύνης φάγεσαι καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ σου μετὰ βασάνου καὶ θλίψεως πίεσαι 19 καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς τὸν λαὸν τῆς γῆς τάδε λέγει κύριος τοῖς κατοικοῦσιν Ιερουσαλημ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς τοῦ Ισραηλ τοὺς ἄρτους αὐτῶν με{T'} ἐνδείας φάγονται καὶ τὸ ὕδωρ αὐτῶν μετὰ ἀφανισμοῦ πίονται ὅπως ἀφανισθῇ ἡ γῆ σὺν πληρώματι αὐτῆς ἐν ἀσεβείᾳ γὰρ πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν αὐτῇ 20 καὶ αἱ πόλεις αὐτῶν αἱ κατοικούμεναι ἐξερημωθήσονται καὶ ἡ γῆ εἰς ἀφανισμὸν ἔσται καὶ ἐπιγνώσεσθε διότι ἐγὼ κύριος

17 Word came to me from the Lord: 18 Son of man, tremble still when bread thou eatest, nor ever drink water but with anxious fear; 19 and this message send from the Lord God to thy countrymen that are left at home: Never citizen of Jerusalem, never inhabitant of Israel, but must eat in fear, put cup to his lips unmanned, till at last unmanned it lies, the whole country-side around them, for their guilt that dwelt in it. 20 Lonely the crowded streets, wasted the country-side must be, ere you learn to know me.

17 Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: 18

Fili hominis, panem tuum in conturbatione comede,
sed et aquam tuam in festinatione et mœrore bibe. 19
Et dices ad populum terræ:
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus
ad eos qui habitant in Jerusalem, in terra Israël:
Panem suum in sollicitudine comedent,
et aquam suam in desolatione bibent:
ut desoletur terra a multitudine sua,
propter iniquitatem omnium qui habitant in ea. 20
Et civitates quæ nunc habitantur, desolatæ erunt,
terraque deserta,
et scietis quia ego Dominus.

21 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 22 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου τίς ὑμῖν ἡ παραβολὴ αὕτη ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς τοῦ Ισραηλ λέγοντες μακρὰν αἱ ἡμέραι ἀπόλωλεν ὅρασις 23 διὰ τοῦτο εἰπὸν πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος ἀποστρέψω τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην καὶ οὐκέτι μὴ εἴπωσιν τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην οἶκος τοῦ Ισραηλ ὅτι λαλήσεις πρὸς αὐτούς ἠγγίκασιν αἱ ἡμέραι καὶ λόγος πάσης ὁράσεως 24 ὅτι οὐκ ἔσται ἔτι πᾶσα ὅρασις ψευδὴς καὶ μαντευόμενος τὰ πρὸς χάριν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραηλ 25 διότι ἐγὼ κύριος λαλήσω τοὺς λόγους μου λαλήσω καὶ ποιήσω καὶ οὐ μὴ μηκύνω ἔτι ὅτι ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ὑμῶν οἶκος ὁ παραπικραίνων λαλήσω λόγον καὶ ποιήσω λέγει κύριος 26 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 27 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου ἰδοὺ οἶκος Ισραηλ ὁ παραπικραίνων λέγοντες λέγουσιν ἡ ὅρασις ἣν οὗτος ὁρᾷ εἰς ἡμέρας πολλάς καὶ εἰς καιροὺς μακροὺς οὗτος προφητεύει 28 διὰ τοῦτο εἰπὸν πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος οὐ μὴ μηκύνωσιν οὐκέτι πάντες οἱ λόγοι μου οὓς ἂν λαλήσω λαλήσω καὶ ποιήσω λέγει κύριος

21 Word came to me from the Lord: 22 What means this saying you have in Israel, The days drag on, and never a warning comes true? 23 Tell them this from the Lord God: Here is a proverb shall be heard in Israel no more; I mean to do away with it. Tell them the time is close at hand now for the fulfilment of all my warnings. 24 Vain vision and flattering hopes Israel shall know no longer; 25 the divine foretelling shall not wait for the divine fulfilling; in your own days, brood of rebels, you shall witness both, the Lord God says. 26 And the Lord’s word came to me: 27 Fond hope of Israel, that these should be distant things thou foretellest, the prophet of a later age! 28 Give them word from the Lord God: Warning of mine knows no delay; here and now, the Lord says, it shall be accomplished.

21 Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: 22

Fili hominis, quod est proverbium istud
vobis in terra Israël, dicentium:
In longum differentur dies,
et peribit omnis visio? 23
Ideo dic ad eos:
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Quiescere faciam proverbium istud,
neque vulgo dicetur ultra in Israël:
et loquere ad eos quod appropinquaverint dies,
et sermo omnis visionis. 24
Non enim erit ultra omnis visio cassa,
neque divinatio ambigua in medio filiorum Israël: 25
quia ego Dominus loquar,
et quodcumque locutus fuero verbum, fiet,
et non prolongabitur amplius:
sed in diebus vestris, domus exasperans,
loquar verbum, et faciam illud,
dicit Dominus Deus. 26 Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: 27

Fili hominis, ecce domus Israël dicentium:
Visio quam hic videt,
in dies multos et in tempora longa iste prophetat. 28
Propterea dic ad eos:
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Non prolongabitur ultra omnis sermo meus:
verbum quod locutus fuero, complebitur,
dicit Dominus Deus.

[1] Here, and in verses 7 and 12, the fugitive is represented by the Septuagint Greek, and by the Latin version, as being carried on men’s shoulders; by the Hebrew text, as carrying his pack on his shoulders. It is doubtful whether the Hebrew verbs are rightly pointed; the more so, as they have no pronoun to express the object they refer to. The implication is perhaps that it will be impossible or unsafe for Sedecias to escape on horseback. Presumably he has his face muffled so as to be unrecognizable; the darkness is perhaps only the effect of the blindfolding, since the escape must have taken place at twilight if the men of Israel were to see it.

[2] In the Hebrew text, there is a play upon words, the burden being ‘that which is lifted up’ and the prince ‘he who is lifted up’. Curiously, the Hebrew text here represents Sedecias as being carried, the Latin as being weighed down with a burden.

[4] In the original simply ‘they’, which can be read, less probably, as referring to the exiles themselves.
