1 καὶ εἰσήγαγέν με εἰς τὸν ναόν ᾧ διεμέτρησεν τὸ αιλαμ πηχῶν ἓξ τὸ πλάτος ἔνθεν καὶ πηχῶν ἓξ τὸ εὖρος τοῦ αιλαμ ἔνθεν 2 καὶ τὸ εὖρος τοῦ πυλῶνος πηχῶν δέκα καὶ ἐπωμίδες τοῦ πυλῶνος πηχῶν πέντε ἔνθεν καὶ πηχῶν πέντε ἔνθεν καὶ διεμέτρησεν τὸ μῆκος αὐτοῦ πηχῶν τεσσαράκοντα καὶ τὸ εὖρος πηχῶν εἴκοσι 3 καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τὴν ἐσωτέραν καὶ διεμέτρησεν τὸ αιλ τοῦ θυρώματος πηχῶν δύο καὶ τὸ θύρωμα πηχῶν ἓξ καὶ τὰς ἐπωμίδας τοῦ θυρώματος πηχῶν ἑπτὰ ἔνθεν καὶ πηχῶν ἑπτὰ ἔνθεν 4 καὶ διεμέτρησεν τὸ μῆκος τῶν θυρῶν πηχῶν τεσσαράκοντα καὶ εὖρος πηχῶν εἴκοσι κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ ναοῦ καὶ εἶπεν τοῦτο τὸ ἅγιον τῶν ἁγίων

1 So he brought me into the temple, between pillars that were six cubits square by tabernacle measure.[1] 2 The door was ten cubits across, the recess behind the doorway five cubits on either side; the whole length of the outer temple was forty cubits, and the width twenty. 3 Then he went into the inner sanctuary, measuring the doorway, two cubits thick, the door, six cubits across, and the width of the recess behind the doorway, seven cubits. 4 Each side had the length of the side next to the outer temple, twenty cubits. This, said he, is the innermost sanctuary.

5 καὶ διεμέτρησεν τὸν τοῖχον τοῦ οἴκου πηχῶν ἓξ καὶ τὸ εὖρος τῆς πλευρᾶς πηχῶν τεσσάρων κυκλόθεν 6 καὶ τὰ πλευρὰ πλευρὸν ἐπὶ πλευρὸν τριάκοντα καὶ τρεῖς δίς καὶ διάστημα ἐν τῷ τοίχῳ τοῦ οἴκου ἐν τοῖς πλευροῖς κύκλῳ τοῦ εἶναι τοῖς ἐπιλαμβανομένοις ὁρᾶν ὅπως τὸ παράπαν μὴ ἅπτωνται τῶν τοίχων τοῦ οἴκου 7 καὶ τὸ εὖρος τῆς ἀνωτέρας τῶν πλευρῶν κατὰ τὸ πρόσθεμα ἐκ τοῦ τοίχου πρὸς τὴν ἀνωτέραν κύκλῳ τοῦ οἴκου ὅπως διαπλατύνηται ἄνωθεν καὶ ἐκ τῶν κάτωθεν ἀναβαίνωσιν ἐπὶ τὰ ὑπερῷα καὶ ἐκ τῶν μέσων ἐπὶ τὰ τριώροφα 8 καὶ τὸ θραελ τοῦ οἴκου ὕψος κύκλῳ διάστημα τῶν πλευρῶν ἴσον τῷ καλάμῳ πήχεων ἓξ διάστημα 9 καὶ εὖρος τοῦ τοίχου τῆς πλευρᾶς ἔξωθεν πηχῶν πέντε καὶ τὰ ἀπόλοιπα ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν πλευρῶν τοῦ οἴκου 10 καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ἐξεδρῶν εὖρος πηχῶν εἴκοσι τὸ περιφερὲς τῷ οἴκῳ κύκλῳ 11 καὶ αἱ θύραι τῶν ἐξεδρῶν ἐπὶ τὸ ἀπόλοιπον τῆς θύρας τῆς μιᾶς τῆς πρὸς βορρᾶν καὶ ἡ θύρα ἡ μία πρὸς νότον καὶ τὸ εὖρος τοῦ φωτὸς τοῦ ἀπολοίπου πηχῶν πέντε πλάτος κυκλόθεν

5 Then he measured the temple wall, which was six cubits thick; it was flanked all round by rooms four cubits square. 6 There were sixty of these rooms, in three storeys one on the top of another; and their upper storeys jutted out all round the temple wall, but keeping apart from it; the temple wall must not be touched. 7 And there was a round stair-case which went up in a spiral to this upper loft of the temple building, which projected outwards for that very reason; there was thus an easy passage from the lower to the middle, and from the middle to the upper storey.[2] 8 The building, I saw, was all raised above the ground; the rod shewed that the ground level of the rooms was six cubits up. 9 The rooms were at a distance of five cubits beyond the temple wall, and they enclosed it all round;[3] 10 and there was a close of twenty cubits’ width between these and a line of parlours which flanked the temple. 11 The doors of the inner rooms let out, to north and south, on a praying-walk,[4] five cubits in width, which ran round the temple.

5 Et mensus est parietem domus sex cubitorum: et latitudinem lateris quatuor cubitorum undique per circuitum domus. 6 Latera autem, latus ad latus, bis triginta tria: et erant eminentia, quæ ingrederentur per parietem domus, in lateribus per circuitum, ut continerent, et non attingerent parietem templi. 7 Et platea erat in rotundum, ascendens sursum per cochleam, et in cœnaculum templi deferebat per gyrum: idcirco latius erat templum in superioribus: et sic de inferioribus ascendebatur ad superiora in medium. 8 Et vidi in domo altitudinem per circuitum, fundata latera ad mensuram calami sex cubitorum spatio: 9 et latitudinem per parietem lateris forinsecus quinque cubitorum: et erat interior domus in lateribus domus. 10 Et inter gazophylacia latitudinem viginti cubitorum in circuitu domus undique, 11 et ostium lateris ad orationem: ostium unum ad viam aquilonis, et ostium unum ad viam australem: et latitudinem loci ad orationem, quinque cubitorum in circuitu.

12 καὶ τὸ διορίζον κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἀπολοίπου ὡς πρὸς θάλασσαν πηχῶν ἑβδομήκοντα πλάτος τοῦ τοίχου τοῦ διορίζοντος πήχεων πέντε εὖρος κυκλόθεν καὶ μῆκος αὐτοῦ πήχεων ἐνενήκοντα 13 καὶ διεμέτρησεν κατέναντι τοῦ οἴκου μῆκος πηχῶν ἑκατόν καὶ τὰ ἀπόλοιπα καὶ τὰ διορίζοντα καὶ οἱ τοῖχοι αὐτῶν μῆκος πηχῶν ἑκατόν 14 καὶ τὸ εὖρος κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ οἴκου καὶ τὰ ἀπόλοιπα κατέναντι πηχῶν ἑκατόν 15 καὶ διεμέτρησεν μῆκος τοῦ διορίζοντος κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἀπολοίπου τῶν κατόπισθεν τοῦ οἴκου ἐκείνου καὶ τὰ ἀπόλοιπα ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν πήχεων ἑκατὸν τὸ μῆκος καὶ ὁ ναὸς καὶ αἱ γωνίαι καὶ τὸ αιλαμ τὸ ἐξώτερον 16 πεφατνωμένα καὶ αἱ θυρίδες δικτυωταί ὑποφαύσεις κύκλῳ τοῖς τρισὶν ὥστε διακύπτειν καὶ ὁ οἶκος καὶ τὰ πλησίον ἐξυλωμένα κύκλῳ καὶ τὸ ἔδαφος καὶ ἐκ τοῦ ἐδάφους ἕως τῶν θυρίδων καὶ αἱ θυρίδες ἀναπτυσσόμεναι τρισσῶς εἰς τὸ διακύπτειν 17 καὶ ἕως πλησίον τῆς ἐσωτέρας καὶ ἕως τῆς ἐξωτέρας καὶ ἐ{F'} ὅλον τὸν τοῖχον κύκλῳ ἐν τῷ ἔσωθεν καὶ ἐν τῷ ἔξωθεν 18 γεγλυμμένα χερουβιν καὶ φοίνικες ἀνὰ μέσον χερουβ καὶ χερουβ δύο πρόσωπα τῷ χερουβ 19 πρόσωπον ἀνθρώπου πρὸς τὸν φοίνικα ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν καὶ πρόσωπον λέοντος πρὸς τὸν φοίνικα ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν διαγεγλυμμένος ὅλος ὁ οἶκος κυκλόθεν 20 ἐκ τοῦ ἐδάφους ἕως τοῦ φατνώματος τὰ χερουβιν καὶ οἱ φοίνικες διαγεγλυμμένοι

12 Round this again was the close of twenty cubits, and beyond that, on the west, a pavilion seventy cubits by ninety, with a wall five cubits thick. 13 He shewed me that the temple was a hundred cubits long; the close with the pavilion beyond it, including its walls, a hundred cubits long; 14 the eastern face of the temple, with the close on each side of it, a hundred cubits long; 15 and the breadth from side to side of the pavilion beyond the close (with its galleries) a hundred cubits long …[5]

… and the inner sanctuary, and the halls that gave on to the courtyard, 16 the doorways, the slanting windows, the galleries that went round on three sides, over the several doorways; all were completely panelled in wood. The panelling ran right up to the windows, which it framed, right up to the top level of the doorway; 17 ran all the way round to meet the inner sanctuary, keeping the same height within and without it. 18 The design was of alternate cherubs and palm-trees, and each cherub had two faces, 19 shewing like a man towards one palm-tree and like a young lion towards the other; the same pattern ran all through the building, 20 carved cherubs and palm-trees on each wall from ground level to the height of the door’s lintel.

12 Et ædificium, quod erat separatum, versumque ad viam respicientem ad mare, latitudinis septuaginta cubitorum: paries autem ædificii, quinque cubitorum latitudinis per circuitum: et longitudo ejus nonaginta cubitorum. 13 Et mensus est domus longitudinem, centum cubitorum: et quod separatum erat ædificium, et parietes ejus, longitudinis centum cubitorum. 14 Latitudo autem ante faciem domus, et ejus quod erat separatum contra orientem, centum cubitorum. 15 Et mensus est longitudinem ædificii contra faciem ejus, quod erat separatum ad dorsum: ethecas ex utraque parte centum cubitorum: et templum interius, et vestibula atrii. 16 Limina, et fenestras obliquas, et ethecas in circuitu per tres partes, contra uniuscujusque limen, stratumque ligno per gyrum in circuitu: terra autem usque ad fenestras, et fenestræ clausæ super ostia. 17 Et usque ad domum interiorem, et forinsecus per omnem parietem in circuitu, intrinsecus et forinsecus, ad mensuram. 18 Et fabrefacta cherubim et palmæ: et palma inter cherub et cherub, duasque facies habebat cherub. 19 Faciem hominis juxta palmam ex hac parte, et faciem leonis juxta palmam ex alia parte: expressam per omnem domum in circuitu. 20 De terra usque ad superiora portæ, cherubim et palmæ cælatæ erant in pariete templi.

21 καὶ τὸ ἅγιον καὶ ὁ ναὸς ἀναπτυσσόμενος τετράγωνα κατὰ πρόσωπον τῶν ἁγίων ὅρασις ὡς ὄψις 22 θυσιαστηρίου ξυλίνου πηχῶν τριῶν τὸ ὕψος αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ μῆκος πηχῶν δύο καὶ τὸ εὖρος πηχῶν δύο καὶ κέρατα εἶχεν καὶ ἡ βάσις αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ τοῖχοι αὐτοῦ ξύλινοι καὶ εἶπεν πρός με αὕτη ἡ τράπεζα ἡ πρὸ προσώπου κυρίου 23 καὶ δύο θυρώματα τῷ ναῷ καὶ τῷ ἁγίῳ 24 δύο θυρώματα τοῖς δυσὶ θυρώμασι τοῖς στροφωτοῖς δύο θυρώματα τῷ ἑνὶ καὶ δύο θυρώματα τῇ θύρᾳ τῇ δευτέρᾳ 25 καὶ γλυφὴ ἐ{P'} αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπὶ τὰ θυρώματα τοῦ ναοῦ χερουβιν καὶ φοίνικες κατὰ τὴν γλυφὴν τῶν ἁγίων καὶ σπουδαῖα ξύλα κατὰ πρόσωπον τοῦ αιλαμ ἔξωθεν 26 καὶ θυρίδες κρυπταί καὶ διεμέτρησεν ἔνθεν καὶ ἔνθεν εἰς τὰ ὀροφώματα τοῦ αιλαμ καὶ τὰ πλευρὰ τοῦ οἴκου ἐζυγωμένα

21 The entrance of the temple stood square, facing the inner sanctuary; 22 facing the altar, which was of wood, three feet high, and two feet across; corners and slab and sides were all of wood. This, he told me, is the table that stands in the Lord’s presence.[6] 23 Outer temple, inner sanctuary, had two doors each; 24 and either door had leaves that folded together, two leaves on each door, 25 with the same pattern of cherubs and palm-trees that the walls had. To match this, the outer porch was faced with thick beams[7] 26 reaching up to the level of the slanting windows; thick beams figured with palm-trees in either recess … matching the width of the rooms and of the temple walls.

21 Limen quadrangulum, et facies sanctuarii, aspectus contra aspectum. 22 Altaris lignei trium cubitorum altitudo, et longitudo ejus duorum cubitorum: et anguli ejus, et longitudo ejus, et parietes ejus lignei. Et locutus est ad me: Hæc est mensa coram Domino. 23 Et duo ostia erant in templo et in sanctuario. 24 Et in duobus ostiis ex utraque parte bina erant ostiola quæ in se invicem plicabantur: bina enim ostia erant ex utraque parte ostiorum. 25 Et cælata erant in ipsis ostiis templi cherubim, et sculpturæ palmarum, sicut in parietibus quoque expressæ erant: quam ob rem et grossiora erant ligna in vestibuli fronte forinsecus. 26 Super quæ fenestræ obliquæ, et similitudo palmarum hinc atque inde in humerulis vestibuli, secundum latera domus, latitudinemque parietum.

[1] This whole chapter is even more obscure than the last, and it is difficult to believe there have not been omissions, if not faults of copying, in the text.

[2] vv. 6, 7. Cf. III Kg. 6.5, 6; here, as there, it seems clear that the rooms at the side must have no architectural connexion with the sacred walls of the temple itself; beyond that, nothing is clear. The rendering above assumes the accuracy of the Latin version; it differs widely both from the Hebrew text and from the Septuagint Greek, which are unintelligible. It is not easy to see why projecting upper storeys should have matched especially well with a spiral stair-case. According to the Hebrew text, there were three storeys of thirty rooms each; the Latin version may imply three storeys of twenty rooms, or two storeys of thirty-three rooms each.

[3] The Hebrew text seems to imply that there was a five-foot wall outside the rooms all round, as well as a six-foot wall inside. But it is not likely that so many rooms should have been made receiving no light whatever.

[4] In the Hebrew text simply ‘an open strip of ground’. This seems to have been a narrow strip at the edge of the raised platform; the twenty-foot close was on ground level.

[5] It looks as if there must have been an omission here, to account for the sudden change of subject. ‘With its galleries’ is difficult to explain; we should have expected ‘including its walls’.

[6] This was presumably the altar of incense; some, however, identify it with the table on which the sacred loaves were exposed (Ex. 25.23, 30.1).

[7] The Hebrew word translated ‘thick beams’ is of very doubtful significance. The last words of the chapter are difficult to understand, whether in the Hebrew, in the Greek, or in the Latin; if the text of them is right, it looks as if there had been a fresh omission.
