1 ἐν τῷ ἔτει τῷ δεκάτῳ ἐν τῷ δεκάτῳ μηνὶ μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 2 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου στήρισον τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἐπὶ Φαραω βασιλέα Αἰγύπτου καὶ προφήτευσον ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν καὶ ἐ{P'} Αἴγυπτον ὅλην 3 καὶ εἰπόν τάδε λέγει κύριος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπὶ Φαραω τὸν δράκοντα τὸν μέγαν τὸν ἐγκαθήμενον ἐν μέσῳ ποταμῶν αὐτοῦ τὸν λέγοντα ἐμοί εἰσιν οἱ ποταμοί καὶ ἐγὼ ἐποίησα αὐτούς 4 καὶ ἐγὼ δώσω παγίδας εἰς τὰς σιαγόνας σου καὶ προσκολλήσω τοὺς ἰχθῦς τοῦ ποταμοῦ σου πρὸς τὰς πτέρυγάς σου καὶ ἀνάξω σε ἐκ μέσου τοῦ ποταμοῦ σου καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἰχθύας τοῦ ποταμοῦ σου 5 καὶ καταβαλῶ σε ἐν τάχει καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἰχθύας τοῦ ποταμοῦ σου ἐπὶ πρόσωπον τοῦ πεδίου πεσῇ καὶ οὐ μὴ συναχθῇς καὶ οὐ μὴ περισταλῇς τοῖς θηρίοις τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῖς πετεινοῖς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ δέδωκά σε εἰς κατάβρωμα 6 καὶ γνώσονται πάντες οἱ κατοικοῦντες Αἴγυπτον ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἐγενήθης ῥάβδος καλαμίνη τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ 7 ὅτε ἐπελάβοντό σου τῇ χειρὶ αὐτῶν ἐθλάσθης καὶ ὅτε ἐπεκράτησεν ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς πᾶσα χεὶρ καὶ ὅτε ἐπανεπαύσαντο ἐπὶ σέ συνετρίβης καὶ συνέκλασας αὐτῶν πᾶσαν ὀσφύν

1 It was the tenth year of Sedecias, on the eleventh day of its tenth month, when word came to me from the Lord: 2 Son of man, turn thy regard towards Pharao, king of Egypt, and prophesy his and all Egypt’s doom. 3 This message give him from the Lord God: Have at thee, Pharao, king of Egypt, great dragon that liest couched between thy streams, boasting that yonder river is thy own, thou art a god, self-created![1] 4 Trust me, I will bridle those jaws of thine, and all the fish in thy river I will fasten to thy scales! Out of the river, fish clinging to scales, I will drag thee, 5 and leave thee aground in the desert, and thy fish too. None shall go out to search for thy corpse, or bring it home; carrion it shall be for beast on earth, for bird in heaven, 6 and all the citizens of Egypt shall learn my power. This, because thou didst prove a staff of cane to the men of Israel;[2] 7 grasped they that staff, it splintered, and there was an arm wounded; leaned they on it, it broke, and their strength gave way under them.

1 In anno decimo, decimo mense, undecima die mensis, factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens: 2 Fili hominis, pone faciem tuam contra Pharaonem regem Ægypti, et prophetabis de eo, et de Ægypto universa. 3 Loquere, et dices:

Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Ecce ego ad te, Pharao rex Ægypti, draco magne,
qui cubas in medio fluminum tuorum, et dicis:
Meus est fluvius, et ego feci memetipsum. 4
Et ponam frenum in maxillis tuis,
et agglutinabo pisces fluminum tuorum squamis tuis,
et extraham te de medio fluminum tuorum,
et universi pisces tui squamis tuis adhærebunt. 5
Et projiciam te in desertum,
et omnes pisces fluminis tui:
super faciem terræ cades;
non colligeris, neque congregaberis:
bestiis terræ et volatilibus cæli dedi te ad devorandum. 6
Et scient omnes habitatores Ægypti quia ego Dominus,
pro eo quod fuisti baculus arundineus domui Israël: 7
quando apprehenderunt te manu, et confractus es,
et lacerasti omnem humerum eorum:
et innitentibus eis super te comminutus es,
et dissolvisti omnes renes eorum.

8 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπάγω ἐπὶ σὲ ῥομφαίαν καὶ ἀπολῶ ἀνθρώπους ἀπὸ σοῦ καὶ κτήνη 9 καὶ ἔσται ἡ γῆ Αἰγύπτου ἀπώλεια καὶ ἔρημος καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος ἀντὶ τοῦ λέγειν σε οἱ ποταμοὶ ἐμοί εἰσιν καὶ ἐγὼ ἐποίησα αὐτούς 10 διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ποταμούς σου καὶ δώσω γῆν Αἰγύπτου εἰς ἔρημον καὶ ῥομφαίαν καὶ ἀπώλειαν ἀπὸ Μαγδώλου καὶ Συήνης καὶ ἕως ὁρίων Αἰθιόπων 11 οὐ μὴ διέλθῃ ἐν αὐτῇ ποὺς ἀνθρώπου καὶ ποὺς κτήνους οὐ μὴ διέλθῃ αὐτήν καὶ οὐ κατοικηθήσεται τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη 12 καὶ δώσω τὴν γῆν αὐτῆς ἀπώλειαν ἐν μέσῳ γῆς ἠρημωμένης καὶ αἱ πόλεις αὐτῆς ἐν μέσῳ πόλεων ἠρημωμένων ἔσονται τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη καὶ διασπερῶ Αἴγυπτον ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ λικμήσω αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰς χώρας

8 This doom, then, the Lord God pronounces: For thee, the sword; man nor beast will I spare in thee; 9 a lonely desert thou shalt be, till thou hast learned what my power is, thou that wouldst be river’s lord and river’s maker. 10 Out upon thee, out upon those streams of thine; a desert Egypt shall be, devastated by the sword, from Syene’s tower to the marches of Ethiopia; 11 man nor beast shall set foot in it till it has lain forty years desolate. 12 Land of Egypt shall be as the desert lands are, cities of Egypt as the ruined cities are, for forty years uninhabited; and the men of Egypt shall be scattered wide as earth among the nations.

Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Ecce ego adducam super te gladium,
et interficiam de te hominem et jumentum. 9
Et erit terra Ægypti in desertum et in solitudinem:
et scient quia ego Dominus,
pro eo quod dixeris: Fluvius meus est, et ego feci eum. 10
Idcirco ecce ego ad te, et ad flumina tua:
daboque terram Ægypti in solitudines,
gladio dissipatam,
a turre Syenes usque ad terminos Æthiopiæ. 11
Non pertransibit eam pes hominis,
neque pes jumenti gradietur in ea,
et non habitabitur quadraginta annis. 12
Daboque terram Ægypti desertam in medio terrarum desertarum,
et civitates ejus in medio urbium subversarum,
et erunt desolatæ quadraginta annis:
et dispergam Ægyptios in nationes,
et ventilabo eos in terras.

13 τάδε λέγει κύριος μετὰ τεσσαράκοντα ἔτη συνάξω τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους ἀπὸ τῶν ἐθνῶν οὗ διεσκορπίσθησαν ἐκεῖ 14 καὶ ἀποστρέψω τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν τῶν Αἰγυπτίων καὶ κατοικίσω αὐτοὺς ἐν γῇ Παθουρης ἐν τῇ γῇ ὅθεν ἐλήμφθησαν καὶ ἔσται ἀρχὴ ταπεινὴ 15 παρὰ πάσας τὰς ἀρχάς οὐ μὴ ὑψωθῇ ἔτι ἐπὶ τὰ ἔθνη καὶ ὀλιγοστοὺς αὐτοὺς ποιήσω τοῦ μὴ εἶναι αὐτοὺς πλείονας ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν 16 καὶ οὐκέτι ἔσονται τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ εἰς ἐλπίδα ἀναμιμνῄσκουσαν ἀνομίαν ἐν τῷ αὐτοὺς ἀκολουθῆσαι ὀπίσω αὐτῶν καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος

13 This too: At the end of forty years I will bring the Egyptians back from their countries of exile, 14 restore them from banishment, and in Phatures, the land of their birth, give them a home once more; there they shall be a kingdom of little account. 15 Least of the kingdoms Egypt shall be, no more hold up its head among the nations, too weak for empire now. 16 No more shall it raise hopes among the men of Israel, and bring upon them the guilt of finding a refuge there; they shall learn that I, the Lord, am their God.

Quia hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Post finem quadraginta annorum congregabo Ægyptum
de populis in quibus dispersi fuerant. 14
Et reducam captivitatem Ægypti,
et collocabo eos in terra Phathures,
in terra nativitatis suæ,
et erunt ibi in regnum humile. 15
Inter cetera regna erit humillima,
et non elevabitur ultra super nationes,
et imminuam eos ne imperent gentibus. 16
Neque erunt ultra domui Israël in confidentia,
docentes iniquitatem ut fugiant, et sequantur eos:
et scient quia ego Dominus Deus.

17 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἑβδόμῳ καὶ εἰκοστῷ ἔτει μιᾷ τοῦ μηνὸς τοῦ πρώτου ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 18 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου Ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος κατεδουλώσατο αὐτοῦ τὴν δύναμιν δουλείᾳ μεγάλῃ ἐπὶ Τύρου πᾶσα κεφαλὴ φαλακρὰ καὶ πᾶς ὦμος μαδῶν καὶ μισθὸς οὐκ ἐγενήθη αὐτῷ καὶ τῇ δυνάμει αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ Τύρου καὶ τῆς δουλείας ἧς ἐδούλευσαν ἐ{P'} αὐτήν 19 τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος ἰδοὺ δίδωμι τῷ Ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλεῖ Βαβυλῶνος γῆν Αἰγύπτου καὶ προνομεύσει τὴν προνομὴν αὐτῆς καὶ σκυλεύσει τὰ σκῦλα αὐτῆς καὶ ἔσται μισθὸς τῇ δυνάμει αὐτοῦ 20 ἀντὶ τῆς λειτουργίας αὐτοῦ ἧς ἐδούλευσεν ἐπὶ Τύρον δέδωκα αὐτῷ γῆν Αἰγύπτου τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος 21 ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀνατελεῖ κέρας παντὶ τῷ οἴκῳ Ισραηλ καὶ σοὶ δώσω στόμα ἀνεῳγμένον ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι κύριος

17 It was on the first day of the twenty-seventh year[3] that word came to me from the Lord: 18 Son of man, here is great drudgery king Nabuchodonosor of Babylon has given his men in the assault upon Tyre; every head worn bald, every shoulder smooth, by the burdens they carried! A thankless service it was they did me there, he and his army; 19 but now, says the Lord God, I will make use of Egypt to pay Nabuchodonosor his wages; all its great wealth he shall have, spoil for his spoiling, plunder for his plundering, and so his men shall have their reward. 20 He has fought my battles, and Egypt shall be his recompense, the Lord God says. 21 When that day comes, new life shall spring from the stock of Israel, and to the men of Israel thou shalt speak with unhampered utterance, to attest my divine power.

17 Et factum est in vigesimo et septimo anno, in primo, in una mensis: factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens: 18

Fili hominis, Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis
servire fecit exercitum suum servitute magna adversum Tyrum:
omne caput decalvatum, et omnis humerus depilatus est:
et merces non est reddita ei, neque exercitui ejus, de Tyro,
pro servitute qua servivit mihi adversus eam. 19
Propterea hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Ecce ego dabo Nabuchodonosor regem Babylonis in terra Ægypti:
et accipiet multitudinem ejus,
et deprædabitur manubias ejus,
et diripiet spolia ejus:
et erit merces exercitui illius, 20
et operi quo servivit adversus eam:
dedi ei terram Ægypti pro eo quod laboraverit mihi,
ait Dominus Deus. 21
In die illo pullulabit cornu domui Israël,
et tibi dabo apertum os in medio eorum,
et scient quia ego Dominus.

[1] Literally, ‘thou didst make thyself’, but some think the sense is ‘thou didst make it (the river) for thyself’, cf. verse 9.

[2] Cf. Is. 36.6.

[3] The other dates given in these chapters plainly refer to the reign of Sedecias, though this is not expressed in the original. Less certainty can be felt about the ‘twenty-seventh year’; cf. note on 1.1.
