1 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ἔτει τῷ ἑβδόμῳ ἐν τῷ πέμπτῳ μηνὶ δεκάτῃ τοῦ μηνὸς ἦλθον ἄνδρες ἐκ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων οἴκου Ισραηλ ἐπερωτῆσαι τὸν κύριον καὶ ἐκάθισαν πρὸ προσώπου μου 2 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρός με λέγων 3 υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου λάλησον πρὸς τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους τοῦ Ισραηλ καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος εἰ ἐπερωτῆσαί με ὑμεῖς ἔρχεσθε ζῶ ἐγὼ εἰ ἀποκριθήσομαι ὑμῖν λέγει κύριος 4 εἰ ἐκδικήσω αὐτοὺς ἐκδικήσει υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου τὰς ἀνομίας τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν διαμάρτυραι αὐτοῖς 5 καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος ἀ{F'} ἧς ἡμέρας ᾑρέτισα τὸν οἶκον Ισραηλ καὶ ἐγνωρίσθην τῷ σπέρματι οἴκου Ιακωβ καὶ ἐγνώσθην αὐτοῖς ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτου καὶ ἀντελαβόμην τῇ χειρί μου αὐτῶν λέγων ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν 6 ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἀντελαβόμην τῇ χειρί μου αὐτῶν τοῦ ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτοὺς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν ἡτοίμασα αὐτοῖς γῆν ῥέουσαν γάλα καὶ μέλι κηρίον ἐστὶν παρὰ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν 7 καὶ εἶπα πρὸς αὐτούς ἕκαστος τὰ βδελύγματα τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτοῦ ἀπορριψάτω καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασιν Αἰγύπτου μὴ μιαίνεσθε ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν 8 καὶ ἀπέστησαν ἀ{P'} ἐμοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἠθέλησαν εἰσακοῦσαί μου τὰ βδελύγματα τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν αὐτῶν οὐκ ἀπέρριψαν καὶ τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα Αἰγύπτου οὐκ ἐγκατέλιπον καὶ εἶπα τοῦ ἐκχέαι τὸν θυμόν μου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς τοῦ συντελέσαι τὴν ὀργήν μου ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐν μέσῳ γῆς Αἰγύπτου 9 καὶ ἐποίησα ὅπως τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ παράπαν μὴ βεβηλωθῇ ἐνώπιον τῶν ἐθνῶν ὧν αὐτοί εἰσιν ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν ἐν οἷς ἐγνώσθην πρὸς αὐτοὺς ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν τοῦ ἐξαγαγεῖν αὐτοὺς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου 10 καὶ ἐξήγαγον αὐτοὺς ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν ἔρημον

1 And now it was the seventh year, the tenth day of the fifth month. Some of the Israelite leaders had come to visit me, asking what was the Lord’s will, and sat closeted with me. 2 And this message I had from the Lord: 3 Son of man, tell the leaders of Israel this from the Lord God: Would you come to ask my will? As I am a living God, the Lord says, you shall have no answer. 4 Arraign them, son of man, arraign them for their crimes; tell them what foul things their fathers did before them. 5 This shall be thy message to them from the Lord God: Long ago I made choice of Israel, plighted to Jacob my troth, when I made myself known to them in the land of Egypt. I swore to be their own God, 6 swore that I would take them away to the home I had destined for them, a land all milk and honey, the best of lands. 7 Only, I told them, his darling idolatries each man must set aside; not for you to be contaminated with the false gods of Egypt; I, the Lord, am your God. 8 All was defiance and disobedience; idolatry still cherished, the worship of Egypt’s gods still unforsaken. I was minded to let my anger have its way, glut my vengeance on them, there in Egypt. 9 But no, I would be their champion, for my own honour’s sake; the heathen all around, that had witnessed my coming to deliver them, must not learn to hold my honour cheap. 10 So from Egypt I rescued them, and led them out into the desert.

1 Et factum est in anno septimo, in quinto, in decima mensis, venerunt viri de senioribus Israël ut interrogarent Dominum, et sederunt coram me. 2 Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: 3 Fili hominis, loquere senioribus Israël, et dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Numquid ad interrogandum me vos venistis? vivo ego quia non respondebo vobis, ait Dominus Deus. 4 Si judicas eos, si judicas, fili hominis, abominationes patrum eorum ostende eis. 5 Et dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: In die qua elegi Israël, et levavi manum meam pro stirpe domus Jacob, et apparui eis in terra Ægypti, et levavi manum meam pro eis, dicens: Ego Dominus Deus vester: 6 in die illa levavi manum meam pro eis ut educerem eos de terra Ægypti, in terram quam provideram eis, fluentem lacte et melle, quæ est egregia inter omnes terras. 7 Et dixi ad eos: Unusquisque offensiones oculorum suorum abjiciat, et in idolis Ægypti nolite pollui: ego Dominus Deus vester. 8 Et irritaverunt me, nolueruntque me audire: unusquisque abominationes oculorum suorum non projecit, nec idola Ægypti reliquerunt. Et dixi ut effunderem indignationem meam super eos, et implerem iram meam in eis, in medio terræ Ægypti. 9 Et feci propter nomen meum, ut non violaretur coram gentibus in quarum medio erant, et inter quas apparui eis ut educerem eos de terra Ægypti. 10 Ejeci ergo eos de terra Ægypti, et eduxi eos in desertum.

11 καὶ ἔδωκα αὐτοῖς τὰ προστάγματά μου καὶ τὰ δικαιώματά μου ἐγνώρισα αὐτοῖς ὅσα ποιήσει αὐτὰ ἄνθρωπος καὶ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς 12 καὶ τὰ σάββατά μου ἔδωκα αὐτοῖς τοῦ εἶναι εἰς σημεῖον ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον αὐτῶν τοῦ γνῶναι αὐτοὺς διότι ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ ἁγιάζων αὐτούς 13 καὶ εἶπα πρὸς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Ισραηλ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ ἐν τοῖς προστάγμασίν μου πορεύεσθε καὶ οὐκ ἐπορεύθησαν καὶ τὰ δικαιώματά μου ἀπώσαντο ἃ ποιήσει αὐτὰ ἄνθρωπος καὶ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ τὰ σάββατά μου ἐβεβήλωσαν σφόδρα καὶ εἶπα τοῦ ἐκχέαι τὸν θυμόν μου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τοῦ ἐξαναλῶσαι αὐτούς 14 καὶ ἐποίησα ὅπως τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ παράπαν μὴ βεβηλωθῇ ἐνώπιον τῶν ἐθνῶν ὧν ἐξήγαγον αὐτοὺς κα{T'} ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν 15 καὶ ἐγὼ ἐξῆρα τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τὸ παράπαν τοῦ μὴ εἰσαγαγεῖν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν ἔδωκα αὐτοῖς γῆν ῥέουσαν γάλα καὶ μέλι κηρίον ἐστὶν παρὰ πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν 16 ἀν{Q'} ὧν τὰ δικαιώματά μου ἀπώσαντο καὶ ἐν τοῖς προστάγμασίν μου οὐκ ἐπορεύθησαν ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ τὰ σάββατά μου ἐβεβήλουν καὶ ὀπίσω τῶν ἐνθυμημάτων τῶν καρδιῶν αὐτῶν ἐπορεύοντο 17 καὶ ἐφείσατο ὁ ὀφθαλμός μου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς τοῦ ἐξαλεῖψαι αὐτοὺς καὶ οὐκ ἐποίησα αὐτοὺς εἰς συντέλειαν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ 18 καὶ εἶπα πρὸς τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ ἐν τοῖς νομίμοις τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν μὴ πορεύεσθε καὶ τὰ δικαιώματα αὐτῶν μὴ φυλάσσεσθε καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασιν αὐτῶν μὴ συναναμίσγεσθε καὶ μὴ μιαίνεσθε 19 ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν ἐν τοῖς προστάγμασίν μου πορεύεσθε καὶ τὰ δικαιώματά μου φυλάσσεσθε καὶ ποιεῖτε αὐτὰ 20 καὶ τὰ σάββατά μου ἁγιάζετε καὶ ἔστω εἰς σημεῖον ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ὑμῶν τοῦ γινώσκειν διότι ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεὸς ὑμῶν 21 καὶ παρεπίκρανάν με καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν ἐν τοῖς προστάγμασίν μου οὐκ ἐπορεύθησαν καὶ τὰ δικαιώματά μου οὐκ ἐφυλάξαντο τοῦ ποιεῖν αὐτά ἃ ποιήσει ἄνθρωπος καὶ ζήσεται ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ τὰ σάββατά μου ἐβεβήλουν καὶ εἶπα τοῦ ἐκχέαι τὸν θυμόν μου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τοῦ συντελέσαι τὴν ὀργήν μου ἐ{P'} αὐτούς 22 καὶ ἐποίησα ὅπως τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ παράπαν μὴ βεβηλωθῇ ἐνώπιον τῶν ἐθνῶν ὧν ἐξήγαγον αὐτοὺς κα{T'} ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν 23 καὶ ἐξῆρα τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τοῦ διασκορπίσαι αὐτοὺς ἐν τοῖς ἔθνεσιν καὶ διασπεῖραι αὐτοὺς ἐν ταῖς χώραις 24 ἀν{Q'} ὧν τὰ δικαιώματά μου οὐκ ἐποίησαν καὶ τὰ προστάγματά μου ἀπώσαντο καὶ τὰ σάββατά μου ἐβεβήλουν καὶ ὀπίσω τῶν ἐνθυμημάτων τῶν πατέρων αὐτῶν ἦσαν οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν 25 καὶ ἐγὼ ἔδωκα αὐτοῖς προστάγματα οὐ καλὰ καὶ δικαιώματα ἐν οἷς οὐ ζήσονται ἐν αὐτοῖς 26 καὶ μιανῶ αὐτοὺς ἐν τοῖς δόμασιν αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ διαπορεύεσθαί με πᾶν διανοῖγον μήτραν ὅπως ἀφανίσω αὐτούς

11 There I gave them a law, made known to them the usages that bring life; 12 bade them share my sabbath rest, that should be a token between me and them, a token that they were divinely set apart. 13 What did Israel then? Defied my anger, disobeyed my law, life-giving commandments cast away, left my sabbath all unhonoured. Should I give vent to my anger, and make an end of them, there in the desert? 14 And let the heathen see my work of deliverance half accomplished? For my honour’s sake, I must not. 15 But I swore, out in the desert, that the promised land, all milk and honey, best of lands, should never be theirs. 16 My will defied, my law forsaken, my sabbath neglected, a heart set on idols, they should learn to rue; 17 had not my pity spared them, they should have died there and then, swallowed up in those wastes. 18 To their sons, the desert-born, warning I gave: Not for you your fathers’ example, your fathers’ traditions, the contamination of the false gods they worshipped. 19 I, the Lord, am your God; mine the laws you must follow, the usages you must cherish and obey; 20 my sabbath you must honour, in token that the Lord is the God you worship. 21 But they too, the sons, defied me; my laws forsook, my life-giving usages forgot, my sabbaths profaned. There in the desert I would have given vent to my anger, let my vengeance take its toll of them, 22 but still I held my hand; for my own honour, the heathen must see my work of deliverance accomplished. 23 But once more in the desert I bound myself by an oath …[1] I would scatter them among all the nations, spread them over the face of earth, 24 men defiant of my will, contemptuous of my law, careless of my sabbath as ever, after the false gods of their fathers hankering still. 25 Laws they should have, but for their harm, usages that brought, not life, but death; 26 guilty, they should stain themselves with fresh guilt by the very offerings they made, when they consecrated their first-born to the fire; they must have proof of my power at last.[2]

11 Et dedi eis præcepta mea, et judicia mea ostendi eis, quæ faciens homo vivet in eis. 12 Insuper et sabbata mea dedi eis, ut essent signum inter me et eos, et scirent quia ego Dominus sanctificans eos. 13 Et irritaverunt me domus Israël in deserto: in præceptis meis non ambulaverunt, et judicia mea projecerunt, quæ faciens homo vivet in eis, et sabbata mea violaverunt vehementer. Dixi ergo ut effunderem furorem meum super eos in deserto, et consumerem eos: 14 et feci propter nomen meum, ne violaretur coram gentibus de quibus ejeci eos in conspectu earum. 15 Ego igitur levavi manum meam super eos in deserto, ne inducerem eos in terram quam dedi eis, fluentem lacte et melle, præcipuam terrarum omnium: 16 quia judicia mea projecerunt, et in præceptis meis non ambulaverunt, et sabbata mea violaverunt: post idola enim cor eorum gradiebatur. 17 Et pepercit oculus meus super eos, ut non interficerem eos: nec consumpsi eos in deserto. 18 Dixi autem ad filios eorum in solitudine: In præceptis patrum vestrorum nolite incedere, nec judicia eorum custodiatis, nec in idolis eorum polluamini. 19 Ego Dominus Deus vester: in præceptis meis ambulate: judicia mea custodite, et facite ea, 20 et sabbata mea sanctificate, ut sint signum inter me et vos, et sciatis quia ego sum Dominus Deus vester. 21 Et exacerbaverunt me filii: in præceptis meis non ambulaverunt, et judicia mea non custodierunt ut facerent ea, quæ cum fecerit homo, vivet in eis, et sabbata mea violaverunt. Et comminatus sum ut effunderem furorem meum super eos, et implerem iram meam in eis in deserto. 22 Averti autem manum meam, et feci propter nomen meum, ut non violaretur coram gentibus de quibus ejeci eos in oculis earum. 23 Iterum levavi manum meam in eos in solitudine, ut dispergerem illos in nationes, et ventilarem in terras, 24 eo quod judicia mea non fecissent, et præcepta mea reprobassent, et sabbata mea violassent, et post idola patrum suorum fuissent oculi eorum. 25 Ergo et ego dedi eis præcepta non bona, et judicia in quibus non vivent. 26 Et pollui eos in muneribus suis, cum offerrent omne quod aperit vulvam, propter delicta sua: et scient quia ego Dominus.

27 διὰ τοῦτο λάλησον πρὸς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Ισραηλ υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτούς τάδε λέγει κύριος ἕως τούτου παρώργισάν με οἱ πατέρες ὑμῶν ἐν τοῖς παραπτώμασιν αὐτῶν ἐν οἷς παρέπεσον εἰς ἐμέ 28 καὶ εἰσήγαγον αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν γῆν ἣν ἦρα τὴν χεῖρά μου τοῦ δοῦναι αὐτοῖς καὶ εἶδον πᾶν βουνὸν ὑψηλὸν καὶ πᾶν ξύλον κατάσκιον καὶ ἔθυσαν ἐκεῖ τοῖς θεοῖς αὐτῶν καὶ ἔταξαν ἐκεῖ ὀσμὴν εὐωδίας καὶ ἔσπεισαν ἐκεῖ σπονδὰς αὐτῶν 29 καὶ εἶπον πρὸς αὐτούς τί ἐστιν Αβαμα ὅτι ὑμεῖς εἰσπορεύεσθε ἐκεῖ καὶ ἐπεκάλεσαν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Αβαμα ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας

27 They blasphemed me (tell Israel from the Lord God), those fathers of yours, and did me great despite. 28 Scarce had I brought them into the promised land, when the sight of high mountain here, thick forest there, set them offering victims in honour of my rivals, burning incense, pouring libations! 29 Well might I ask them, Whither resort you? And hill-resorts they are called to this day.[3]

27 Quam ob rem loquere ad domum Israël, fili hominis, et dices ad eos: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Adhuc et in hoc blasphemaverunt me patres vestri, cum sprevissent me contemnentes, 28 et induxissem eos in terram super quam levavi manum meam ut darem eis: viderunt omnem collem excelsum, et omne lignum nemorosum, et immolaverunt ibi victimas suas, et dederunt ibi irritationem oblationis suæ, et posuerunt ibi odorem suavitatis suæ, et libaverunt libationes suas. 29 Et dixi ad eos: Quid est excelsum, ad quod vos ingredimini? et vocatum est nomen ejus Excelsum usque ad hanc diem.

30 διὰ τοῦτο εἰπὸν πρὸς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ Ισραηλ τάδε λέγει κύριος εἰ ἐν ταῖς ἀνομίαις τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν ὑμεῖς μιαίνεσθε καὶ ὀπίσω τῶν βδελυγμάτων αὐτῶν ὑμεῖς ἐκπορνεύετε 31 καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἀπαρχαῖς τῶν δομάτων ὑμῶν ἐν τοῖς ἀφορισμοῖς ὑμεῖς μιαίνεσθε ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἐνθυμήμασιν ὑμῶν ἕως τῆς σήμερον ἡμέρας καὶ ἐγὼ ἀποκριθῶ ὑμῖν οἶκος τοῦ Ισραηλ ζῶ ἐγώ λέγει κύριος εἰ ἀποκριθήσομαι ὑμῖν καὶ εἰ ἀναβήσεται ἐπὶ τὸ πνεῦμα ὑμῶν τοῦτο 32 καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὃν τρόπον ὑμεῖς λέγετε ἐσόμεθα ὡς τὰ ἔθνη καὶ ὡς αἱ φυλαὶ τῆς γῆς τοῦ λατρεύειν ξύλοις καὶ λίθοις 33 διὰ τοῦτο ζῶ ἐγώ λέγει κύριος ἐν χειρὶ κραταιᾷ καὶ ἐν βραχίονι ὑψηλῷ καὶ ἐν θυμῷ κεχυμένῳ βασιλεύσω ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς 34 καὶ ἐξάξω ὑμᾶς ἐκ τῶν λαῶν καὶ εἰσδέξομαι ὑμᾶς ἐκ τῶν χωρῶν οὗ διεσκορπίσθητε ἐν αὐταῖς ἐν χειρὶ κραταιᾷ καὶ ἐν βραχίονι ὑψηλῷ καὶ ἐν θυμῷ κεχυμένῳ 35 καὶ ἄξω ὑμᾶς εἰς τὴν ἔρημον τῶν λαῶν καὶ διακριθήσομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐκεῖ πρόσωπον κατὰ πρόσωπον 36 ὃν τρόπον διεκρίθην πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ὑμῶν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ γῆς Αἰγύπτου οὕτως κρινῶ ὑμᾶς λέγει κύριος 37 καὶ διάξω ὑμᾶς ὑπὸ τὴν ῥάβδον μου καὶ εἰσάξω ὑμᾶς ἐν ἀριθμῷ 38 καὶ ἐκλέξω ἐξ ὑμῶν τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς καὶ τοὺς ἀφεστηκότας διότι ἐκ τῆς παροικεσίας αὐτῶν ἐξάξω αὐτούς καὶ εἰς τὴν γῆν τοῦ Ισραηλ οὐκ εἰσελεύσονται καὶ ἐπιγνώσεσθε διότι ἐγὼ κύριος 39 καὶ ὑμεῖς οἶκος Ισραηλ τάδε λέγει κύριος κύριος ἕκαστος τὰ ἐπιτηδεύματα αὐτοῦ ἐξάρατε καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα εἰ μὴ ὑμεῖς εἰσακούετέ μου καὶ τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ ἅγιον οὐ βεβηλώσετε οὐκέτι ἐν τοῖς δώροις ὑμῶν καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἐπιτηδεύμασιν ὑμῶν

30 Give the men of Israel, then, this message from the Lord God: Still the same ways your fathers went, still the same itch for things abominable? 31 To this day, when you would make offering, you pass your sons through the fire; guilt of idolatry stains you yet, and shall I make answer to you, men of Israel? As I am a living God, the Lord says, you shall have no answer from me! 32 Never think I will allow you to worship wood and stone like other races of men, your neighbours; 33 as I am a living God, the Lord says, I mean to reign over you, though it should need all the exercise of my constraining power, all the outpouring of my vengeance. 34 Rescued from many masters, summoned from many lands, you shall serve me perforce, my power constraining you, my vengeance threatening you. 35 I will lead you out into a desert world, and there plead my cause against you, 36 as I did with your fathers long ago, in the desert confines of Egypt. 37 I will force you under my sceptre, chain you to my covenant. 38 The rebels I will set apart, and though I summon them away from their banishment, they shall never return to the land of Israel; then you will know what manner of God you serve. 39 Come, then, says the Lord God, let each man have recourse to his own idol, and pay it due worship! 30 Propterea dic ad domum Israël: Hæc dicit Dominus Deus: Certe in via patrum vestrorum vos polluimini, et post offendicula eorum vos fornicamini: 31 et in oblatione donorum vestrorum, cum traducitis filios vestros per ignem, vos polluimini in omnibus idolis vestris usque hodie: et ego respondebo vobis, domus Israël? 40 On that holy mountain of mine, the Lord God says, that high mountain that looks down over Israel, all the race of Israel shall be my worshippers, favoured suitors in a favoured land; first-fruit and tithe, all your hallowings shall be awaited there. 41 Rescued from so many masters, summoned from so many lands, you shall be a fragrant offering; all my dealings with you the heathen shall acclaim, 42 and you yourselves shall recognize my power, restored to the land of Israel, the land I promised to your fathers. 43 False paths and foul misdoings you shall remember yet, and think with loathing of what you were; 44 my power you shall know, men of Israel, says the Lord God; and that I was your benefactor, not for your deserts, that erred and sinned, but for my own honour’s sake.

45 Word came to me from the Lord: 46 Look southward, son of man; pour out thy complaint towards the noon-day sun, and let the southern woodlands hear thee prophesy. 47 To the listening forest give this message from the Lord God: I mean to set thee alight, burn up green tree and dry; unquenchable, that flame shall scorch the faces of all beholders, northward and south alike; 48 plain enough it shall be for all the world to see that it was I, the Lord, set it ablaze, and there is no quenching it.

45 Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens: 46

Fili hominis, pone faciem tuam contra viam austri,
et stilla ad africum,
et propheta ad saltum agri meridiani. 47
Et dices saltui meridiano:
Audi verbum Domini:
Hæc dicit Dominus Deus:
Ecce ego succendam in te ignem,
et comburam in te omne lignum viride,
et omne lignum aridum:
non extinguetur flamma succensionis:
et comburetur in ea omnis facies
ab austro usque ad aquilonem, 48
et videbit universa caro quia ego Dominus succendi eam,
nec extinguetur.

49 καὶ εἶπα μηδαμῶς κύριε κύριε αὐτοὶ λέγουσιν πρός με οὐχὶ παραβολή ἐστιν λεγομένη αὕτη

49 Alas for pity, Lord God, said I, they are complaining already that I speak to them only in parables!

49 Et dixi: A, a, a, Domine Deus: ipsi dicunt de me: Numquid non per parabolas loquitur iste?

[1] It seems possible there has been an omission here, such as is very likely to occur in a passage full of repetitions. Verse 24 seems to deal with an existing situation (not with a future situation, like Deut. 4.27, etc.); and if so, the threat of dispersal would more naturally be uttered against a people already settled in Chanaan.

[2] vv. 25, 26. This passage cannot mean that Almighty God commanded the sacrifice of children; cf. Jer. 32,35. The prophet implies, by a kind of ironical exaggeration, that by refusing aid to his guilty people God drove them to become worshippers of Moloch, whose usages brought death instead of life. ‘Laws they should have’, ‘they should stain themselves’; literally, ‘I gave them laws’, ‘I stained them’.

[3] This verse contains a (probably fanciful) derivation of the usual Hebrew word for ‘hill-shrines’. It is perhaps intended to emphasize the fact that the shrines were still used in the prophet’s own day, in spite of all the punishments Israel had experienced.

[4] It seems clear that there is an omission after this verse, unless indeed the text of it has been incorrectly transmitted.
