1 καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος κυρίου πρὸς Ιερεμιαν περὶ τῆς ἀβροχίας 2 ἐπένθησεν ἡ Ιουδαία καὶ αἱ πύλαι αὐτῆς ἐκενώθησαν καὶ ἐσκοτώθησαν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἡ κραυγὴ τῆς Ιερουσαλημ ἀνέβη 3 καὶ οἱ μεγιστᾶνες αὐτῆς ἀπέστειλαν τοὺς νεωτέρους αὐτῶν ἐ{F'} ὕδωρ ἤλθοσαν ἐπὶ τὰ φρέατα καὶ οὐχ εὕροσαν ὕδωρ καὶ ἀπέστρεψαν τὰ ἀγγεῖα αὐτῶν κενά 4 καὶ τὰ ἔργα τῆς γῆς ἐξέλιπεν ὅτι οὐκ ἦν ὑετός ᾐσχύνθησαν γεωργοί ἐπεκάλυψαν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτῶν 5 καὶ ἔλαφοι ἐν ἀγρῷ ἔτεκον καὶ ἐγκατέλιπον ὅτι οὐκ ἦν βοτάνη 6 ὄνοι ἄγριοι ἔστησαν ἐπὶ νάπας εἵλκυσαν ἄνεμον ἐξέλιπον οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ αὐτῶν ὅτι οὐκ ἦν χόρτος ἀπὸ λαοῦ ἀδικίας 7 εἰ αἱ ἁμαρτίαι ἡμῶν ἀντέστησαν ἡμῖν κύριε ποίησον ἡμῖν ἕνεκεν σοῦ ὅτι πολλαὶ αἱ ἁμαρτίαι ἡμῶν ἐναντίον σοῦ ὅτι σοὶ ἡμάρτομεν 8 ὑπομονὴ Ισραηλ κύριε καὶ σῴζεις ἐν καιρῷ κακῶν ἵνα τί ἐγενήθης ὡσεὶ πάροικος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ὡς αὐτόχθων ἐκκλίνων εἰς κατάλυμα 9 μὴ ἔσῃ ὥσπερ ἄνθρωπος ὑπνῶν ἢ ὡς ἀνὴρ οὐ δυνάμενος σῴζειν καὶ σὺ ἐν ἡμῖν εἶ κύριε καὶ τὸ ὄνομά σου ἐπικέκληται ἐ{F'} ἡμᾶς μὴ ἐπιλάθῃ ἡμῶν

1 How the Lord answered Jeremias in the matter of the drought. 2 Lamentation in Juda, faint hearts and the dress of mourners in the market-place, loud the cry that goes up from Jerusalem! 3 Master sends man to fetch water, but when cistern is reached, water is none; back go the pails empty, and disappointed vexation veils its head. 4 Vexation, too, and veiled heads among the country folk, so languish the fields for lack of rain; 5 hind forsakes its new-born young, out on the plain, because grass has failed it, 6 and the wild ass on the hill-side gasps for air, crocodile-fashion,[1] eyes dim with the vain search for pasture. 7 What though we have guilt to plead against us? For thy own honour, Lord, bring us aid, rebels so often, yet confessing how we have wronged thee! 8 Thou, Israel’s hope, in time of calamity its refuge still, wilt thou pass us by, like stranger in a land that is none of his, like some traveller that will ask for a night’s lodging and be gone? 9 Why dost thou hang back like a man irresolute, a warrior that has forgotten his strength? Lord, thy dwelling-place is among us; thy holy name we bear; wilt thou abandon us?

Luxit Judæa, et portæ ejus corruerunt,
et obscuratæ sunt in terra,
et clamor Jerusalem ascendit. 3
Majores miserunt minores suos ad aquam:
venerunt ad hauriendum.
Non invenerunt aquam:
reportaverunt vasa sua vacua.
Confusi sunt, et afflicti,
et operuerunt capita sua. 4
Propter terræ vastitatem,
quia non venit pluvia in terram,
confusi sunt agricolæ:
operuerunt capita sua. 5
Nam et cerva in agro peperit, et reliquit,
quia non erat herba. 6
Et onagri steterunt in rupibus;
traxerunt ventum quasi dracones:
defecerunt oculi eorum,
quia non erat herba. 7
Si iniquitates nostræ responderint nobis, Domine,
fac propter nomen tuum:
quoniam multæ sunt aversiones nostræ:
tibi peccavimus. 8
Exspectatio Israël,
salvator ejus in tempore tribulationis,
quare quasi colonus futurus es in terra,
et quasi viator declinans ad manendum? 9
quare futurus es velut vir vagus,
ut fortis qui non potest salvare?
Tu autem in nobis es, Domine,
et nomen tuum invocatum est super nos:
ne derelinquas nos.

10 οὕτως λέγει κύριος τῷ λαῷ τούτῳ ἠγάπησαν κινεῖν πόδας αὐτῶν καὶ οὐκ ἐφείσαντο καὶ ὁ θεὸς οὐκ εὐδόκησεν ἐν αὐτοῖς νῦν μνησθήσεται τῶν ἀδικιῶν αὐτῶν 11 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με μὴ προσεύχου περὶ τοῦ λαοῦ τούτου εἰς ἀγαθά 12 ὅτι ἐὰν νηστεύσωσιν οὐκ εἰσακούσομαι τῆς δεήσεως αὐτῶν καὶ ἐὰν προσενέγκωσιν ὁλοκαυτώματα καὶ θυσίας οὐκ εὐδοκήσω ἐν αὐτοῖς ὅτι ἐν μαχαίρᾳ καὶ ἐν λιμῷ καὶ ἐν θανάτῳ ἐγὼ συντελέσω αὐτούς 13 καὶ εἶπα ὦ κύριε ἰδοὺ οἱ προφῆται αὐτῶν προφητεύουσιν καὶ λέγουσιν οὐκ ὄψεσθε μάχαιραν οὐδὲ λιμὸς ἔσται ἐν ὑμῖν ὅτι ἀλήθειαν καὶ εἰρήνην δώσω ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς καὶ ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ 14 καὶ εἶπεν κύριος πρός με ψευδῆ οἱ προφῆται προφητεύουσιν ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου οὐκ ἀπέστειλα αὐτοὺς καὶ οὐκ ἐνετειλάμην αὐτοῖς καὶ οὐκ ἐλάλησα πρὸς αὐτούς ὅτι ὁράσεις ψευδεῖς καὶ μαντείας καὶ οἰωνίσματα καὶ προαιρέσεις καρδίας αὐτῶν αὐτοὶ προφητεύουσιν ὑμῖν 15 διὰ τοῦτο τάδε λέγει κύριος περὶ τῶν προφητῶν τῶν προφητευόντων ἐπὶ τῷ ὀνόματί μου ψευδῆ καὶ ἐγὼ οὐκ ἀπέστειλα αὐτούς οἳ λέγουσιν μάχαιρα καὶ λιμὸς οὐκ ἔσται ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ταύτης ἐν θανάτῳ νοσερῷ ἀποθανοῦνται καὶ ἐν λιμῷ συντελεσθήσονται οἱ προφῆται 16 καὶ ὁ λαός οἷς αὐτοὶ προφητεύουσιν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἔσονται ἐρριμμένοι ἐν ταῖς διόδοις Ιερουσαλημ ἀπὸ προσώπου μαχαίρας καὶ τοῦ λιμοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ θάπτων αὐτούς καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες αὐτῶν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτῶν καὶ αἱ θυγατέρες αὐτῶν καὶ ἐκχεῶ ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς τὰ κακὰ αὐτῶν

10 Hearts ever in love with wandering, never at rest, what answer will the Lord make them? That his favour is not for them; at this hour he keeps their guilt in memory, for all their misdoings calls them to account. 11 Nay, the Lord said to me, do not pray for the welfare of such a people as this. 12 Fast they, their prayers shall go unheard; offer they burnt-sacrifice and victim, I will have none of it; sword, and famine, and the pestilence shall wear them down. 13 Alas, alas, Lord God, said I, here are their prophets telling them they shall never see sword drawn, famine shall be none among them; theirs shall be a land of lasting content. 14 These are but false promises, the Lord said, that they utter in my name; warrant they never had from me, nor errand, nor message; of false visions they tell you, and soothsayings, and trickery, and their own hearts’ inventions. 15 Here is the Lord’s sentence upon prophets not of his sending, who speak to you in his name of a land unhurt by sword or famine; by sword and famine those prophets shall be devoured. 16 Slain by sword and famine, the common folk that listen to them shall lie in the streets of Jerusalem, with none to bury them; wives and sons and daughters shall die with them; their own misdoings shall be a flood to drown them.

Hæc dicit Dominus populo huic,
qui dilexit movere pedes suos,
et non quievit,
et Domino non placuit:
Nunc recordabitur iniquitatum eorum,
et visitabit peccata eorum. 11
Et dixit Dominus ad me:
Noli orare pro populo isto in bonum. 12
Cum jejunaverint,
non exaudiam preces eorum,
et si obtulerint holocautomata et victimas,
non suscipiam ea:
quoniam gladio, et fame, et peste consumam eos. 13 Et dixi:

A, a, a, Domine Deus:
prophetæ dicunt eis:
Non videbitis gladium,
et fames non erit in vobis:
sed pacem veram dabit vobis in loco isto. 14 Et dicit Dominus ad me:

Falso prophetæ vaticinantur in nomine meo:
non misi eos, et non præcepi eis,
neque locutus sum ad eos.
Visionem mendacem, et divinationem,
et fraudulentiam, et seductionem cordis sui,
prophetant vobis. 15
Idcirco hæc dicit Dominus
de prophetis qui prophetant in nomine meo,
quos ego non misi, dicentes:
Gladius et fames non erit in terra hac:
In gladio et fame consumentur prophetæ illi. 16
Et populi quibus prophetant
erunt projecti in viis Jerusalem
præ fame et gladio,
et non erit qui sepeliat eos:
ipsi et uxores eorum,
filii et filiæ eorum:
et effundam super eos malum suum.

17 καὶ ἐρεῖς πρὸς αὐτοὺς τὸν λόγον τοῦτον καταγάγετε ἐ{P'} ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν δάκρυα ἡμέρας καὶ νυκτός καὶ μὴ διαλιπέτωσαν ὅτι συντρίμματι συνετρίβη θυγάτηρ λαοῦ μου καὶ πληγῇ ὀδυνηρᾷ σφόδρα 18 ἐὰν ἐξέλθω εἰς τὸ πεδίον καὶ ἰδοὺ τραυματίαι μαχαίρας καὶ ἐὰν εἰσέλθω εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ ἰδοὺ πόνος λιμοῦ ὅτι ἱερεὺς καὶ προφήτης ἐπορεύθησαν εἰς γῆν ἣν οὐκ ᾔδεισαν 19 μὴ ἀποδοκιμάζων ἀπεδοκίμασας τὸν Ιουδαν καὶ ἀπὸ Σιων ἀπέστη ἡ ψυχή σου ἵνα τί ἔπαισας ἡμᾶς καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἡμῖν ἴασις ὑπεμείναμεν εἰς εἰρήνην καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἀγαθά εἰς καιρὸν ἰάσεως καὶ ἰδοὺ ταραχή 20 ἔγνωμεν κύριε ἁμαρτήματα ἡμῶν ἀδικίας πατέρων ἡμῶν ὅτι ἡμάρτομεν ἐναντίον σου 21 κόπασον διὰ τὸ ὄνομά σου μὴ ἀπολέσῃς θρόνον δόξης σου μνήσθητι μὴ διασκεδάσῃς τὴν διαθήκην σου τὴν με{Q'} ἡμῶν 22 μὴ ἔστιν ἐν εἰδώλοις τῶν ἐθνῶν ὑετίζων καὶ εἰ ὁ οὐρανὸς δώσει πλησμονὴν αὐτοῦ οὐχὶ σὺ εἶ αὐτός καὶ ὑπομενοῦμέν σε ὅτι σὺ ἐποίησας πάντα ταῦτα

17 This too thou shalt say to them …[2]

… Weep, eyes, day and night, never resting, at the great hurt, the grievous wound she suffers, my people, inviolable till now! 18 Nothing the country-side shews but massacre, nothing the city but faces pinched with famine; prophet and priest are gone, in a land of strangers they must ply their trade[3] now. 19 Hast thou abandoned Juda once for all, art thou weary of Sion? Past all healing thou hast wounded us; how we long for better times, and no relief comes to us, for remedy at last, and danger still threatens! 20 Lord, we acknowledge our rebelliousness, acknowledge our fathers’ guilt, confess that we have wronged thee; 21 for thy own honour, do not shame us, do not drag thy own royal glory in the dust; wilt thou forget, wilt thou annul the covenant that binds thee? 22 Grant rain they cannot, the false gods of the heathen, the dumb skies have no showers of their own to give; for these, his creatures, wait we patiently on the Lord our God.

Et dices ad eos verbum istud:
Deducant oculi mei lacrimam per noctem et diem,
et non taceant,
quoniam contritione magna
contrita est virgo filia populi mei,
plaga pessima vehementer. 18
Si egressus fuero ad agros,
ecce occisi gladio:
et si introiero in civitatem,
ecce attenuati fame.
Propheta quoque et sacerdos abierunt in terram quam ignorabant. 19
Numquid projiciens abjecisti Judam?
aut Sion abominata est anima tua?
quare ergo percussisti nos ita ut nulla sit sanitas?
Exspectavimus pacem,
et non est bonum:
et tempus curationis,
et ecce turbatio. 20
Cognovimus, Domine, impietates nostras,
iniquitates patrum nostrorum,
quia peccavimus tibi. 21
Ne des nos in opprobrium, propter nomen tuum,
neque facias nobis contumeliam solii gloriæ tuæ:
recordare, ne irritum facias fœdus tuum nobiscum. 22
Numquid sunt in sculptilibus gentium qui pluant?
aut cæli possunt dare imbres?
nonne tu es Dominus Deus noster, quem exspectavimus?
tu enim fecisti omnia hæc.

[1] Literally, ‘as the dragons do’. Some would interpret, ‘as the jackals do’.

[2] It does not seem likely that the rubric ‘This too thou shalt say to them’ applies to the very human remonstrances which follow; an omission or a dislocation in the text is more probable.

[3] This is definitely implied by the verb used in the Hebrew text; the Latin version has obscured its significance.
