1 ὁ λόγος ὁ γενόμενος παρὰ κυρίου πρὸς Ιερεμιαν ὕστερον μετὰ τὸ ἀποστεῖλαι αὐτὸν Ναβουζαρδαν τὸν ἀρχιμάγειρον τὸν ἐκ Δαμαν ἐν τῷ λαβεῖν αὐτὸν ἐν χειροπέδαις ἐν μέσῳ ἀποικίας Ιουδα τῶν ἠγμένων εἰς Βαβυλῶνα 2 καὶ ἔλαβεν αὐτὸν ὁ ἀρχιμάγειρος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ κύριος ὁ θεός σου ἐλάλησεν τὰ κακὰ ταῦτα ἐπὶ τὸν τόπον τοῦτον 3 καὶ ἐποίησεν κύριος ὅτι ἡμάρτετε αὐτῷ καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε αὐτοῦ τῆς φωνῆς 4 ἰδοὺ ἔλυσά σε ἀπὸ τῶν χειροπέδων τῶν ἐπὶ τὰς χεῖράς σου εἰ καλὸν ἐναντίον σου ἐλθεῖν με{T'} ἐμοῦ εἰς Βαβυλῶνα ἧκε καὶ θήσω τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς μου ἐπὶ σέ 5 εἰ δὲ μή ἀπότρεχε καὶ ἀνάστρεψον πρὸς Γοδολιαν υἱὸν Αχικαμ υἱοῦ Σαφαν ὃν κατέστησεν βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος ἐν γῇ Ιουδα καὶ οἴκησον με{T'} αὐτοῦ ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ λαοῦ ἐν γῇ Ιουδα εἰς ἅπαντα τὰ ἀγαθὰ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς σου τοῦ πορευθῆναι πορεύου καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ὁ ἀρχιμάγειρος δῶρα καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτόν 6 καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς Γοδολιαν εἰς Μασσηφα καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ καταλειφθέντος ἐν τῇ γῇ

1 To Jeremias the word of the Lord still came, after the captain of the bodyguard, Nabuzardan, had set him at liberty. This happened at Rama, where he was singled out, still in chains, among the prisoners from Jerusalem and Juda who were on their way to Babylon. 2 As he took him apart from the rest, the captain of the bodyguard said to him, With calamity the Lord thy God threatened this land of thine, 3 and calamity he has brought upon it; his threat is fulfilled. What guilt was this, to refuse the Lord obedience! And here is the issue. 4 From thy hands I have struck the chains, as thou seest; bear me company, if thou wilt, to Babylon, and I will take good care of thee; if thou wilt not go my way, then abide where thou art. The whole land is at thy disposal, and thou art free to take thy own path; none may constrain thee to go with me. 5 Here is Godolias, son of Ahicam, son of Saphan, that is entrusted by the king of Babylon with the charge of all Juda; dwell with him if thou wilt, here among thy own people, or where thou hast a mind betake thee. And with that, the captain of the bodyguard furnished him with provisions, and made him a present besides, and so took leave of him. 6 It was to Godolias son of Ahicam, at Maspath, that Jeremias repaired, and dwelt with him among the remnant of the land’s inhabitants.

1 Sermo qui factus est ad Jeremiam a Domino, postquam dimissus est a Nabuzardan magistro militiæ de Rama, quando tulit eum vinctum catenis in medio omnium qui migrabant de Jerusalem et Juda, et ducebantur in Babylonem. 2 Tollens ergo princeps militiæ Jeremiam, dixit ad eum: Dominus Deus tuus locutus est malum hoc super locum istum: 3 et adduxit, et fecit Dominus sicut locutus est, quia peccastis Domino, et non audistis vocem ejus: et factus est vobis sermo hic. 4 Nunc ergo ecce solvi te hodie de catenis quæ sunt in manibus tuis: si placet tibi ut venias mecum in Babylonem, veni, et ponam oculos meos super te: si autem displicet tibi venire mecum in Babylonem, reside: ecce omnis terra in conspectu tuo est: quod elegeris, et quo placuerit tibi ut vadas, illuc perge: 5 et mecum noli venire, sed habita apud Godoliam filium Ahicam filii Saphan, quem præposuit rex Babylonis civitatibus Juda: habita ergo cum eo in medio populi: vel quocumque placuerit tibi ut vadas, vade. Dedit quoque ei magister militiæ cibaria et munuscula, et dimisit eum. 6 Venit autem Jeremias ad Godoliam filium Ahicam in Masphath, et habitavit cum eo in medio populi qui relictus fuerat in terra.

7 καὶ ἤκουσαν πάντες οἱ ἡγεμόνες τῆς δυνάμεως τῆς ἐν ἀγρῷ αὐτοὶ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτῶν ὅτι κατέστησεν βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος τὸν Γοδολιαν ἐν τῇ γῇ καὶ παρεκατέθετο αὐτῷ ἄνδρας καὶ γυναῖκας αὐτῶν οὓς οὐκ ἀπῴκισεν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα 8 καὶ ἦλθεν πρὸς Γοδολιαν εἰς Μασσηφα Ισμαηλ υἱὸς Ναθανιου καὶ Ιωαναν υἱὸς Καρηε καὶ Σαραιας υἱὸς Θαναεμεθ καὶ υἱοὶ Ωφε τοῦ Νετωφατι καὶ Ιεζονιας υἱὸς τοῦ Μοχατι αὐτοὶ καὶ οἱ ἄνδρες αὐτῶν 9 καὶ ὤμοσεν αὐτοῖς Γοδολιας καὶ τοῖς ἀνδράσιν αὐτῶν λέγων μὴ φοβηθῆτε ἀπὸ προσώπου τῶν παίδων τῶν Χαλδαίων κατοικήσατε ἐν τῇ γῇ καὶ ἐργάσασθε τῷ βασιλεῖ Βαβυλῶνος καὶ βέλτιον ἔσται ὑμῖν 10 καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ κάθημαι ἐναντίον ὑμῶν εἰς Μασσηφα στῆναι κατὰ πρόσωπον τῶν Χαλδαίων οἳ ἂν ἔλθωσιν ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς καὶ ὑμεῖς συναγάγετε οἶνον καὶ ὀπώραν καὶ συναγάγετε ἔλαιον καὶ βάλετε εἰς τὰ ἀγγεῖα ὑμῶν καὶ οἰκήσατε ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν αἷς κατεκρατήσατε 11 καὶ πάντες οἱ Ιουδαῖοι οἱ ἐν γῇ Μωαβ καὶ ἐν υἱοῖς Αμμων καὶ οἱ ἐν τῇ Ιδουμαίᾳ καὶ οἱ ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ ἤκουσαν ὅτι ἔδωκεν βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος κατάλειμμα τῷ Ιουδα καὶ ὅτι κατέστησεν ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς τὸν Γοδολιαν υἱὸν Αχικαμ 12 καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς Γοδολιαν εἰς γῆν Ιουδα εἰς Μασσηφα καὶ συνήγαγον οἶνον καὶ ὀπώραν πολλὴν σφόδρα καὶ ἔλαιον

7 Men, women, and children, to Godolias son of Ahicam the king of Babylon entrusted them, all these landless folk who had not been carried off into exile. And when the news of this appointment reached the army chieftains, scattered here and there with their men, 8 they rallied to Godolias at Maspha. Here were Ismahel, son of Nathanias, Johanan and Jonathan, sons of Caree, Sareas, son of Thanehumeth, the sons of Ophi from Netophathi, and Jezonias, son of Maachathi, all with men at their backs. 9 To these, chiefs and men alike, Godolias son of Ahicam son of Saphan took an oath. They need have no fear of living under Chaldaean rule; let them remain in the country as the king of Babylon’s vassals, and all should go well with them. 10 I am living here in Masphath, said he, to take the orders sent me from Chaldaea; it is for you to gather in vintage and harvest and olive-yield, each of you abiding in the city he now occupies. 11 There were other Jews living in Moab, Ammon, Edom, and the countries round about; these, when they heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant in Juda, and put Godolias, son of Ahicam, son of Saphan, in charge of them, 12 came back from the countries where they had taken refuge into Judaea, came to Godolias at Masphath; and abundant was the store they brought in, of grapes and grain both.

7 Cumque audissent omnes principes exercitus, qui dispersi fuerant per regiones, ipsi et socii eorum, quod præfecisset rex Babylonis Godoliam filium Ahicam terræ, et quod commendasset ei viros, et mulieres, et parvulos, et de pauperibus terræ, qui non fuerant translati in Babylonem, 8 venerunt ad Godoliam in Masphath, et Ismahel filius Nathaniæ, et Johanan et Jonathan filii Caree, et Sareas filius Thanehumeth, et filii Ophi, qui erant de Netophathi, et Jezonias filius Maachathi, ipsi et viri eorum. 9 Et juravit eis Godolias filius Ahicam filii Saphan, et comitibus eorum, dicens: Nolite timere servire Chaldæis: habitate in terra, et servite regi Babylonis, et bene erit vobis. 10 Ecce ego habito in Masphath, ut respondeam præcepto Chaldæorum qui mittuntur ad nos: vos autem colligite vindemiam, et messem, et oleum, et condite in vasis vestris, et manete in urbibus vestris quas tenetis. 11 Sed et omnes Judæi qui erant in Moab, et in filiis Ammon, et in Idumæa, et in universis regionibus, audito quod dedisset rex Babylonis reliquias in Judæa, et quod præposuisset super eos Godoliam filium Ahicam filii Saphan, 12 reversi sunt, inquam, omnes Judæi de universis locis ad quæ profugerant, et venerunt in terram Juda ad Godoliam in Masphath, et collegerunt vinum et messem multam nimis.

13 καὶ Ιωαναν υἱὸς Καρηε καὶ πάντες οἱ ἡγεμόνες τῆς δυνάμεως οἱ ἐν τοῖς ἀγροῖς ἦλθον πρὸς Γοδολιαν εἰς Μασσηφα 14 καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ εἰ γνώσει γινώσκεις ὅτι Βελισα βασιλεὺς υἱῶν Αμμων ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς σὲ τὸν Ισμαηλ πατάξαι σου ψυχήν καὶ οὐκ ἐπίστευσεν αὐτοῖς Γοδολιας 15 καὶ Ιωαναν εἶπεν τῷ Γοδολια κρυφαίως ἐν Μασσηφα πορεύσομαι δὴ καὶ πατάξω τὸν Ισμαηλ καὶ μηθεὶς γνώτω μὴ πατάξῃ σου ψυχὴν καὶ διασπαρῇ πᾶς Ιουδα οἱ συνηγμένοι πρὸς σὲ καὶ ἀπολοῦνται οἱ κατάλοιποι Ιουδα 16 καὶ εἶπεν Γοδολιας πρὸς Ιωαναν μὴ ποιήσῃς τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο ὅτι ψευδῆ σὺ λέγεις περὶ Ισμαηλ

13 And now, at Masphath, Godolias was visited by Johanan son of Caree, and the other chieftains from the countryside, 14 with this warning: We have information that Ismahel, son of Nathanias, was sent here by Baalis, king of Ammon, to take thy life. But Godolias would not believe it. 15 When Johanan was at Masphath he took Godolias aside; Let me go and make away with Ismahel secretly, he urged; if he should take thy life, all the Jews that have rallied about thee will be scattered again, and Juda have a remnant no more. 16 But Godolias would have none of it; Nay, said he to Johanan, leave off thy purpose; it is but a false report thou tellest me concerning Ismahel.

13 Johanan autem filius Caree, et omnes principes exercitus qui dispersi fuerant in regionibus, venerunt ad Godoliam in Masphath, 14 et dixerunt ei: Scito quod Baalis, rex filiorum Ammon, misit Ismahel filium Nathaniæ percutere animam tuam. Et non credidit eis Godolias filius Ahicam. 15 Johanan autem filius Caree dixit ad Godoliam seorsum in Masphath, loquens: Ibo, et percutiam Ismahel filium Nathaniæ, nullo sciente, ne interficiat animam tuam, et dissipentur omnes Judæi qui congregati sunt ad te, et peribunt reliquiæ Juda. 16 Et ait Godolias filius Ahicam ad Johanan filium Caree: Noli facere verbum hoc: falsum enim tu loqueris de Ismahel.
