1 τοῖς υἱοῖς Αμμων οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος μὴ υἱοὶ οὔκ εἰσιν ἐν Ισραηλ ἢ παραλημψόμενος οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτοῖς διὰ τί παρέλαβεν Μελχομ τὸν Γαδ καὶ ὁ λαὸς αὐτῶν ἐν πόλεσιν αὐτῶν ἐνοικήσει 2 διὰ τοῦτο ἰδοὺ ἡμέραι ἔρχονται φησὶν κύριος καὶ ἀκουτιῶ ἐπὶ Ραββαθ θόρυβον πολέμων καὶ ἔσονται εἰς ἄβατον καὶ εἰς ἀπώλειαν καὶ βωμοὶ αὐτῆς ἐν πυρὶ κατακαυθήσονται καὶ παραλήμψεται Ισραηλ τὴν ἀρχὴν αὐτοῦ 3 ἀλάλαξον Εσεβων ὅτι ὤλετο Γαι κεκράξατε θυγατέρες Ραββαθ περιζώσασθε σάκκους καὶ ἐπιλημπτεύσασθε καὶ κόψασθε ἐπὶ Μελχομ ὅτι ἐν ἀποικίᾳ βαδιεῖται οἱ ἱερεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες αὐτοῦ ἅμα 4 τί ἀγαλλιάσῃ ἐν τοῖς πεδίοις Ενακιμ θύγατερ ἰταμίας ἡ πεποιθυῖα ἐπὶ θησαυροῖς αὐτῆς ἡ λέγουσα τίς εἰσελεύσεται ἐ{P'} ἐμέ 5 ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ φέρω φόβον ἐπὶ σέ εἶπεν κύριος ἀπὸ πάσης τῆς περιοίκου σου καὶ διασπαρήσεσθε ἕκαστος εἰς πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὁ συνάγων 6

1 And thus the Lord speaks to the Ammonites: Did Israel, then, leave no sons, no heirs to follow him? How comes it that Melchom boasts possession of Gad, and worshippers of his dwell in yonder cities? 2 A time is coming, the Lord says, when Rabbath Ammon shall hear the din of fighting, and shall be thrown down in ruins; when her daughter cities shall be burnt to the ground, and Israel, so runs the divine promise, shall drive out the intruder. 3 Shall Hesebon mourn for Hai laid waste, and the women of Rabbath for Rabbath make no lament?[1] Nay, put on sackcloth, raise the dirge as you scatter among the hedge-rows; Melchom goes into banishment, his priests and his votary chieftains with him. 4 So proud of thy valleys! Wasted away, now, is that vale of thine, pampered maiden; confident in thy rich store, thou didst flatter thyself none should come near to harm thee, 5 but I mean to fill thee with dread, says the Lord, the God of hosts, dread of all thy neighbours. Each man shall take his own path, scattering in flight, and there shall be none to rally the fugitives. 6 Yet afterwards, the Lord says, I will bring the exiled sons of Ammon back to their home.

1 Ad filios Ammon.

Hæc dicit Dominus:
Numquid non filii sunt Israël,
aut hæres non est ei?
cur igitur hæreditate possedit Melchom Gad,
et populus ejus in urbibus ejus habitavit? 2
Ideo ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus,
et auditum faciam super Rabbath filiorum Ammon fremitum prælii,
et erit in tumultum dissipata,
filiæque ejus igni succendentur,
et possidebit Israël possessores suos, ait Dominus. 3
Ulula, Hesebon, quoniam vastata est Hai;
clamate, filiæ Rabbath:
accingite vos ciliciis,
plangite et circuite per sepes,
quoniam Melchom in transmigrationem ducetur,
sacerdotes ejus et principes ejus simul. 4
Quid gloriaris in vallibus?
defluxit vallis tua, filia delicata,
quæ confidebas in thesauris tuis,
et dicebas: Quis veniet ad me? 5
Ecce ego inducam super te terrorem,
ait Dominus Deus exercituum,
ab omnibus qui sunt in circuitu tuo:
et dispergemini singuli a conspectu vestro,
nec erit qui congreget fugientes. 6
Et post hæc reverti faciam
captivos filiorum Ammon, ait Dominus.

7 τῇ Ιδουμαίᾳ τάδε λέγει κύριος οὐκ ἔστιν ἔτι σοφία ἐν Θαιμαν ἀπώλετο βουλὴ ἐκ συνετῶν ὤχετο σοφία αὐτῶν 8 ἠπατήθη ὁ τόπος αὐτῶν βαθύνατε εἰς κάθισιν οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Δαιδαν ὅτι δύσκολα ἐποίησεν ἤγαγον ἐ{P'} αὐτὸν ἐν χρόνῳ ᾧ ἐπεσκεψάμην ἐ{P'} αὐτόν 9 ὅτι τρυγηταὶ ἦλθόν σοι οὐ καταλείψουσίν σοι καταλείμματα ὡς κλέπται ἐν νυκτὶ ἐπιθήσουσιν χεῖρα αὐτῶν 10 ὅτι ἐγὼ κατέσυρα τὸν Ησαυ ἀνεκάλυψα τὰ κρυπτὰ αὐτῶν κρυβῆναι οὐ μὴ δύνωνται ὤλοντο διὰ χεῖρα ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ γείτονος αὐτοῦ καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν 11 ὑπολείπεσθαι ὀρφανόν σου ἵνα ζήσηται καὶ ἐγὼ ζήσομαι καὶ χῆραι ἐ{P'} ἐμὲ πεποίθασιν 12 ὅτι τάδε εἶπεν κύριος οἷς οὐκ ἦν νόμος πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον ἔπιον καὶ σὺ ἀθῳωμένη οὐ μὴ ἀθῳωθῇς ὅτι πίνων πίεσαι 13 ὅτι κα{T'} ἐμαυτοῦ ὤμοσα λέγει κύριος ὅτι εἰς ἄβατον καὶ εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν καὶ εἰς κατάρασιν ἔσῃ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις αὐτῆς ἔσονται ἔρημοι εἰς αἰῶνα

7 And for Edom, this. No more is Theman wise, as of old, says the Lord of hosts; the prudence of that breed is lost, its wisdom all gone to waste. 8 Flee away, men of Dedan, and never look behind you, or hide deep in earth; I am bringing ruin upon Esau, calling him to account at last. 9 Here are such vintagers as will leave thee never a cluster, such night-robbers as will have their fill; 10 mine to strip Esau bare, dig up his lairs till there is no hiding in them. The whole brood of him must be destroyed, never a kinsman or neighbour left, that will say,[2] 11 To my care entrust thy orphans, to me let thy widows look for support. 12 So many there are, the Lord says, that must drink the cup of vengeance all undeserving; and wouldst thou be spared, wouldst thou be acquitted? Acquittal for thee is none; thou shalt drain it to the dregs. 13 By my own honour I have sworn it, the Lord says, that Bosra shall be an empty wilderness, a name to revile and to curse by; that her daughter cities shall for ever be desolate.

7 Ad Idumæam.

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:
Numquid non ultra est sapientia in Theman?
periit consilium a filiis;
inutilis facta est sapientia eorum. 8
Fugite, et terga vertite;
descendite in voraginem, habitatores Dedan:
quoniam perditionem Esau adduxi super eum,
tempus visitationis ejus. 9
Si vindemiatores venissent super te,
non reliquissent racemum:
si fures in nocte rapuissent quod sufficeret sibi. 10
Ego vero discooperui Esau:
revelavi abscondita ejus,
et celari non poterit:
vastatum est semen ejus,
et fratres ejus, et vicini ejus, et non erit. 11
Relinque pupillos tuos: ego faciam eos vivere:
et viduæ tuæ in me sperabunt. 12
Quia hæc dicit Dominus:
Ecce quibus non erat judicium ut biberent calicem,
bibentes bibent:
et tu, quasi innocens relinqueris?
non eris innocens, sed bibens bibes. 13
Quia per memetipsum juravi, dicit Dominus,
quod in solitudinem, et in opprobrium,
et in desertum, et in maledictionem erit Bosra,
et omnes civitates ejus erunt in solitudines sempiternas.

14 ἀκοὴν ἤκουσα παρὰ κυρίου καὶ ἀγγέλους εἰς ἔθνη ἀπέστειλεν συνάχθητε καὶ παραγένεσθε εἰς αὐτήν ἀνάστητε εἰς πόλεμον 15 μικρὸν ἔδωκά σε ἐν ἔθνεσιν εὐκαταφρόνητον ἐν ἀνθρώποις 16 ἡ παιγνία σου ἐνεχείρησέν σοι ἰταμία καρδίας σου κατέλυσεν τρυμαλιὰς πετρῶν συνέλαβεν ἰσχὺν βουνοῦ ὑψηλοῦ ὅτι ὕψωσεν ὥσπερ ἀετὸς νοσσιὰν αὐτοῦ ἐκεῖθεν καθελῶ σε 17 καὶ ἔσται ἡ Ιδουμαία εἰς ἄβατον πᾶς ὁ παραπορευόμενος ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν συριεῖ 18 ὥσπερ κατεστράφη Σοδομα καὶ Γομορρα καὶ αἱ πάροικοι αὐτῆς εἶπεν κύριος παντοκράτωρ οὐ μὴ καθίσῃ ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπος καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐνοικήσῃ ἐκεῖ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου 19 ἰδοὺ ὥσπερ λέων ἀναβήσεται ἐκ μέσου τοῦ Ιορδάνου εἰς τόπον Αιθαμ ὅτι ταχὺ ἐκδιώξω αὐτοὺς ἀ{P'} αὐτῆς καὶ τοὺς νεανίσκους ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν ἐπιστήσατε ὅτι τίς ὥσπερ ἐγώ καὶ τίς ἀντιστήσεταί μοι καὶ τίς οὗτος ποιμήν ὃς στήσεται κατὰ πρόσωπόν μου 20 διὰ τοῦτο ἀκούσατε βουλὴν κυρίου ἣν ἐβουλεύσατο ἐπὶ τὴν Ιδουμαίαν καὶ λογισμὸν αὐτοῦ ὃν ἐλογίσατο ἐπὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Θαιμαν ἐὰν μὴ συμψησθῶσιν τὰ ἐλάχιστα τῶν προβάτων ἐὰν μὴ ἀβατωθῇ ἐ{P'} αὐτὴν κατάλυσις αὐτῶν 21 ὅτι ἀπὸ φωνῆς πτώσεως αὐτῶν ἐσείσθη ἡ γῆ καὶ κραυγή σου ἐν θαλάσσῃ ἠκούσθη 22 ἰδοὺ ὥσπερ ἀετὸς ὄψεται καὶ ἐκτενεῖ τὰς πτέρυγας ἐ{P'} ὀχυρώματα αὐτῆς καὶ ἔσται ἡ καρδία τῶν ἰσχυρῶν τῆς Ιδουμαίας ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ὡς καρδία γυναικὸς ὠδινούσης

14 Hue and cry the Lord has brought to my ears, that even now goes out among the nations, Muster we and march we against her; on to battle! 15 A little thing I mean thee to be in the world’s eyes henceforward, unregarded among the nations; 16 till now, pride and the insolence of thy heart deluded thee, so safe thy nest among the rock-crevices, so close thou didst cling to the mountain summits; but now, be thy eyrie high as the eagle’s, I will yet drag thee down, the Lord says.[3] 17 A very desert Edom shall be; no passer-by but will stand amazed, and hiss derision at its sufferings; 18 not more ruinously Sodom fell, and Gomorrha, and their neighbour cities, that lie uninhabited, far from the homes of men. 19 See how lion from the fens of Jordan sallies out against yonder protected fold! Not less sudden the alarm shall be;[4] and the flock shall have a master of my own choosing. Match for me is none, there is none dare implead me, no rival shepherd may challenge a claim like mine! 20 Would you know what the Lord’s design is for Edom, what plans he is devising against the homesteads of Theman? Why, he says, it will but need an array of weaklings to dislodge them,[5] pull their dwelling-place down about their ears! 21 And with the crash of that ruin earth shakes, far as the Red Sea ring the echoes of it. 22 An eagle’s flight yonder conqueror has, to soar high and sweep down on Bosra; cowed as woman’s heart in child-bearing are the warrior hearts of Edom.

Auditum audivi a Domino,
et legatus ad gentes missus est:
Congregamini, et venite contra eam,
et consurgamus in prælium. 15
Ecce enim parvulum dedi te in gentibus,
contemptibilem inter homines. 16
Arrogantia tua decepit te,
et superbia cordis tui,
qui habitas in cavernis petræ,
et apprehendere niteris altitudinem collis:
cum exaltaveris quasi aquila nidum tuum,
inde detraham te, dicit Dominus. 17
Et erit Idumæa deserta:
omnis qui transibit per eam stupebit,
et sibilabit super omnes plagas ejus. 18
Sicut subversa est Sodoma et Gomorrha,
et vicinæ ejus, ait Dominus:
non habitabit ibi vir,
et non incolet eam filius hominis. 19
Ecce quasi leo ascendet
de superbia Jordanis ad pulchritudinem robustam,
quia subito currere faciam eum ad illam.
Et quis erit electus, quem præponam ei?
quis enim similis mei?
et quis sustinebit me?
et quis est iste pastor, qui resistat vultui meo? 20
Propterea audite consilium Domini quod iniit de Edom,
et cogitationes ejus quas cogitavit de habitatoribus Theman:
si non dejecerint eos parvuli gregis,
nisi dissipaverint cum eis habitaculum eorum. 21
A voce ruinæ eorum commota est terra;
clamor in mari Rubro auditus est vocis ejus. 22
Ecce quasi aquila ascendet,
et avolabit, et expandet alas suas super Bosran:
et erit cor fortium Idumææ in die illa
quasi cor mulieris parturientis.

23 τῇ Δαμασκῷ κατῃσχύνθη Ημαθ καὶ Αρφαδ ὅτι ἤκουσαν ἀκοὴν πονηράν ἐξέστησαν ἐθυμώθησαν ἀναπαύσασθαι οὐ μὴ δύνωνται 24 ἐξελύθη Δαμασκός ἀπεστράφη εἰς φυγήν τρόμος ἐπελάβετο αὐτῆς 25 πῶς οὐχὶ ἐγκατέλιπεν πόλιν ἐμήν κώμην ἠγάπησαν 26 διὰ τοῦτο πεσοῦνται νεανίσκοι ἐν πλατείαις σου καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες οἱ πολεμισταί σου πεσοῦνται φησὶν κύριος 27 καὶ καύσω πῦρ ἐν τείχει Δαμασκοῦ καὶ καταφάγεται ἄμφοδα υἱοῦ Αδερ

23 And for Damascus, this. Hamath and Arphad see their hopes betray them; grievous the news that reaches them, and they are rocked on a sea of doubt; anxiety gives them no respite. 24 As for Damascus, her strength has left her; no thought has she but for flight, daunted by her peril, overcome, like woman in child-bearing, with sharp pangs. 25 City so renowned, home of such delights, must all abandon her? 26 In her streets they lie slain, all the flower of her youth, all her brave warriors lie silent now, the Lord says; 27 and such a fire I will light within Damascus walls as shall feed on the palaces of Benadad.

23 Ad Damascum.

Confusa est Emath et Arphad,
quia auditum pessimum audierunt:
turbati sunt in mari;
præ sollicitudine quiescere non potuit. 24
Dissoluta est Damascus,
versa est in fugam:
tremor apprehendit eam,
angustia et dolores tenuerunt eam quasi parturientem. 25
Quomodo dereliquerunt civitatem laudabilem,
urbem lætitiæ? 26
Ideo cadent juvenes ejus in plateis ejus,
et omnes viri prælii conticescent in die illa,
ait Dominus exercituum. 27
Et succendam ignem in muro Damasci,
et devorabit mœnia Benadad.

28 τῇ Κηδαρ βασιλίσσῃ τῆς αὐλῆς ἣν ἐπάταξεν Ναβουχοδονοσορ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος οὕτως εἶπεν κύριος ἀνάστητε καὶ ἀνάβητε ἐπὶ Κηδαρ καὶ πλήσατε τοὺς υἱοὺς Κεδεμ 29 σκηνὰς αὐτῶν καὶ πρόβατα αὐτῶν λήμψονται ἱμάτια αὐτῶν καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη αὐτῶν καὶ καμήλους αὐτῶν λήμψονται ἑαυτοῖς καὶ καλέσατε ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς ἀπώλειαν κυκλόθεν 30 φεύγετε λίαν βαθύνατε εἰς κάθισιν καθήμενοι ἐν τῇ αὐλῇ ὅτι ἐβουλεύσατο ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος βουλὴν καὶ ἐλογίσατο ἐ{F'} ὑμᾶς λογισμόν

28 And this for Cedar, and the realms of Asor, that were destroyed by Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon. Word comes from the Lord: Up, march against Cedar, despoil we these children of the East! 29 Pillage there shall be of home and herd, plundering of tents and gear and camels, and cries of Danger everywhere. 30 Flee away, wander far away, men of Asor; deep, says the Lord, be your hiding-places! Here is Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon holding a council of war, devising plans against you.

28 Ad Cedar, et ad regna Asor, quæ percussit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis.

Hæc dicit Dominus:
Surgite, et ascendite ad Cedar,
et vastate filios orientis. 29
Tabernacula eorum, et greges eorum capient:
pelles eorum, et omnia vasa eorum,
et camelos eorum tollent sibi,
et vocabunt super eos formidinem in circuitu. 30
Fugite, abite vehementer, in voraginibus sedete,
qui habitatis Asor, ait Dominus:
iniit enim contra vos Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis consilium,
et cogitavit adversum vos cogitationes.

31 ἀνάστηθι καὶ ἀνάβηθι ἐ{P'} ἔθνος εὐσταθοῦν καθήμενον εἰς ἀναψυχήν οἷς οὔκ εἰσιν θύραι οὐ βάλανοι οὐ μοχλοί μόνοι καταλύουσιν 32 καὶ ἔσονται κάμηλοι αὐτῶν εἰς προνομὴν καὶ πλῆθος κτηνῶν αὐτῶν εἰς ἀπώλειαν καὶ λικμήσω αὐτοὺς παντὶ πνεύματι κεκαρμένους πρὸ προσώπου αὐτῶν ἐκ παντὸς πέραν αὐτῶν οἴσω τὴν τροπὴν αὐτῶν εἶπεν κύριος 33 καὶ ἔσται ἡ αὐλὴ διατριβὴ στρουθῶν καὶ ἄβατος ἕως αἰῶνος οὐ μὴ καθίσῃ ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπος καὶ οὐ μὴ κατοικήσῃ ἐκεῖ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου

31 Up, march against a people that lives at ease, fearing no attack, the Lord says; gates and bars they have none, dwelling there in the wilderness; 32 camels for your plunder, herds a many for your prey! Scattered they shall be to all the winds, the folk that clip their foreheads bare, and from every corner of their lands death shall threaten them, the Lord says. 33 Asor shall be a lair for serpents, a land for ever desolate; uninhabited it shall lie, far from the homes of men.

Consurgite, et ascendite ad gentem quietam,
et habitantem confidenter, ait Dominus:
non ostia, nec vectes eis: soli habitant. 32
Et erunt cameli eorum in direptionem,
et multitudo jumentorum in prædam:
et dispergam eos in omnem ventum,
qui sunt attonsi in comam,
et ex omni confinio eorum adducam interitum super eos, ait Dominus. 33
Et erit Asor in habitaculum draconum,
deserta usque in æternum:
non manebit ibi vir,
nec incolet eam filius hominis.

34 ἐν ἀρχῇ βασιλεύοντος Σεδεκιου τοῦ βασιλέως ἐγένετο ὁ λόγος οὗτος περὶ Αιλαμ 35 τάδε λέγει κύριος συντριβήτω τὸ τόξον Αιλαμ ἀρχὴ δυναστείας αὐτῶν 36 καὶ ἐπάξω ἐπὶ Αιλαμ τέσσαρας ἀνέμους ἐκ τῶν τεσσάρων ἄκρων τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ διασπερῶ αὐτοὺς ἐν πᾶσιν τοῖς ἀνέμοις τούτοις καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ἔθνος ὃ οὐχ ἥξει ἐκεῖ οἱ ἐξωσμένοι Αιλαμ 37 καὶ πτοήσω αὐτοὺς ἐναντίον τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν τῶν ζητούντων τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπάξω ἐ{P'} αὐτοὺς κακὰ κατὰ τὴν ὀργὴν τοῦ θυμοῦ μου καὶ ἐπαποστελῶ ὀπίσω αὐτῶν τὴν μάχαιράν μου ἕως τοῦ ἐξαναλῶσαι αὐτούς 38 καὶ θήσω τὸν θρόνον μου ἐν Αιλαμ καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ ἐκεῖθεν βασιλέα καὶ μεγιστᾶνας 39 καὶ ἔσται ἐ{P'} ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν ἀποστρέψω τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν Αιλαμ λέγει κύριος

34 And here is the doom the Lord pronounced to the prophet Jeremias against Aelam, at the beginning of Sedecias’ reign in Juda. 35 A message from the Lord of hosts! I mean to break the bows of yonder Aelamites, wherein lies all their strength. 36 Upon Aelam I will bid the winds blow from the four corners of heaven, and before each scatter them like chaff, till nation is none that has not seen their fugitives. 37 Daunted the Aelamites shall be by the onset of their mortal enemies; my angry vengeance I will let loose against them, the Lord says, and my sword shall go at their heels till I have taken full toll of them. 38 In Aelam I will set up my throne, he says, and rid it altogether of kings and princes. 39 Yet afterwards, so runs the divine promise, I will bring the exiled sons of Aelam back to their home.

34 Quod facum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam adversus Ælam, in principio regni Sedeciæ regis Juda, dicens: 35

Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum:
Ecce ego confringam arcum Ælam,
et summam fortitudinem eorum: 36
et inducam super Ælam quatuor ventos a quatuor plagis cæli,
et ventilabo eos in omnes ventos istos,
et non erit gens ad quam non perveniant profugi Ælam. 37
Et pavere faciam Ælam coram inimicis suis,
et in conspectu quærentium animam eorum:
et adducam super eos malum,

[1] The original runs simply, ‘Mourn, Hesebon, for Hai is laid waste; lament, daughters of Rabbath’. But it seems clear that Hesebon, which had no connexion with the Ammonites, is only brought in by way of comparison. No town of Hai is elsewhere mentioned east of the Jordan, and many think the text is corrupt.

[2] vv. 10, 11. The words ‘that will say’ are not expressed in the original, but it seems necessary to supply them; otherwise the two verses are in direct contradiction, and the mention of ‘neighbours’ is inexplicable.

[3] vv. 14-16. The prophecy of Abdias opens with (substantially) the same expressions, and Abd. 5 is a reminiscence of verse 9 above. The use of common material by the two prophets seems the most probable explanation; cf. note on 48.29-38.

[4] Literally, ‘I will suddenly make him run to it’, but the Hebrew text has, ‘I will make him (Edom) suddenly run away from it’.

[5] Literally, ‘the little ones of the flock will throw them down’; the Hebrew text can be interpreted as meaning, ‘they will throw down the little ones of the flock’.
