1 καὶ υἱοὶ Ιουδα Φαρες Αρσων καὶ Χαρμι καὶ Ωρ Σουβαλ 2 καὶ Ραια υἱὸς αὐτοῦ καὶ Σουβαλ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ιεθ καὶ Ιεθ ἐγέννησεν τὸν Αχιμι καὶ τὸν Λααδ αὗται αἱ γενέσεις τοῦ Σαραθι 3 καὶ οὗτοι υἱοὶ Αιταμ Ιεζραηλ καὶ Ραγμα καὶ Ιαβας καὶ ὄνομα ἀδελφῆς αὐτῶν Εσηλεββων 4 καὶ Φανουηλ πατὴρ Γεδωρ καὶ Αζηρ πατὴρ Ωσαν οὗτοι υἱοὶ Ωρ τοῦ πρωτοτόκου Εφραθα πατρὸς Βαιθλαεμ 5 καὶ τῷ Σαουρ πατρὶ Θεκωε ἦσαν δύο γυναῖκες Αωδα καὶ Θοαδα 6 καὶ ἔτεκεν αὐτῷ Αωδα τὸν Ωχαζαμ καὶ τὸν Ηφαδ καὶ τὸν Θαιμαν καὶ τὸν Ασθηραν πάντες οὗτοι υἱοὶ Αωδας 7 καὶ υἱοὶ Θοαδα Σαρεθ καὶ Σααρ καὶ Εθναν 8 καὶ Κως ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ενωβ καὶ τὸν Σαβηβα καὶ γεννήσεις ἀδελφοῦ Ρηχαβ υἱοῦ Ιαριμ 9 καὶ ἦν Ιγαβης ἔνδοξος ὑπὲρ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡ μήτηρ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ιγαβης λέγουσα ἔτεκον ὡς γαβης 10 καὶ ἐπεκαλέσατο Ιγαβης τὸν θεὸν Ισραηλ λέγων ἐὰν εὐλογῶν εὐλογήσῃς με καὶ πληθύνῃς τὰ ὅριά μου καὶ ᾖ ἡ χείρ σου με{T'} ἐμοῦ καὶ ποιήσεις γνῶσιν τοῦ μὴ ταπεινῶσαί με καὶ ἐπήγαγεν ὁ θεὸς πάντα ὅσα ᾐτήσατο

1 The men of Juda were descended from Phares, Hesron, Charmi, Hur, and Sobal. 2 Sobal was father of Raia, Raia of Jahath, Jahath of Ahumai and Laad; thence come the Sarathite families. 3 Jezrahel, Jesema, Jedebos and their sister Asalelphuni were children of Etam; 4 he, like Gedor’s father Phanuel and Hosa’s father Ezer, was descended from Ephratha’s first-born son Hur, from whom came Bethlehem. 5 Assur, father of Thecua, had two wives, Halaa and Naara; 6 Naara bore him Oozam, Hepher, Themani and Ahasthari, and besides these sons of hers 7 he had three sons by Halaa, Sereth, Isaar and Ethnan …. 8 From Cos came Anob and Soboba, and all the family of Aharehel son of Arum …. 9 Jabes was renowned above all his brethren; his mother had called him by that name as if she would say, Painfully I bore him. 10 And this was Jabes’ prayer to the Lord God of Israel, A full blessing, Lord! Wide lands, and thy hand with me, that enmity may never overcome me! And the Lord granted his request.

Et præstitit Deus quæ precatus est.

11 καὶ Χαλεβ πατὴρ Ασχα ἐγέννησεν τὸν Μαχιρ οὗτος πατὴρ Ασσαθων 12 καὶ Ασσαθων ἐγέννησεν τὸν Βαθρεφαν καὶ τὸν Φεσσηε καὶ τὸν Θανα πατέρα πόλεως Ναας ἀδελφοῦ Εσελων τοῦ Κενεζι οὗτοι ἄνδρες Ρηφα 13 καὶ υἱοὶ Κενεζ Γοθονιηλ καὶ Σαραια καὶ υἱοὶ Γοθονιηλ Αθαθ 14 καὶ Μαναθι ἐγέννησεν τὸν Γοφερα καὶ Σαραια ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ιωαβ πατέρα Αγεαδδαϊρ ὅτι τέκτονες ἦσαν 15 καὶ υἱοὶ Χαλεβ υἱοῦ Ιεφοννη Ηρα Αλα καὶ Νοομ καὶ υἱοὶ Αλα Κενεζ 16 καὶ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Γεσεηλ Αμηαχι καὶ Ζαφα καὶ Ζαιρα καὶ Εσεραηλ 17 καὶ υἱοὶ Εσρι Ιεθερ Μωραδ καὶ Αφερ καὶ Ιαλων καὶ ἐγέννησεν Ιεθερ τὸν Μαρων καὶ τὸν Σεμαι καὶ τὸν Μαρεθ πατέρα Εσθεμων 18 καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ αὕτη Αδια ἔτεκεν τὸν Ιαρεδ πατέρα Γεδωρ καὶ τὸν Αβερ πατέρα Σωχων καὶ τὸν Ιεκθιηλ πατέρα Ζανω καὶ οὗτοι υἱοὶ Γελια θυγατρὸς Φαραω ἣν ἔλαβεν Μωρηδ 19 καὶ υἱοὶ γυναικὸς τῆς Ιδουιας ἀδελφῆς Ναχεμ καὶ Δαλια πατὴρ Κεϊλα καὶ Σεμειων πατὴρ Ιωμαν καὶ υἱοὶ Ναημ πατρὸς Κεϊλα Αγαρμι καὶ Εσθεμωη Μαχαθι 20 καὶ υἱοὶ Σεμιων Αμνων καὶ Ρανα υἱὸς Αναν καὶ Θιλων καὶ υἱοὶ Ισεϊ Ζωαθ καὶ υἱοὶ Ζωαθ

11 … From Caleb, brother of Sua, through Mahir and Esthon, 12 came Bethrapha, and from Bethrapha Phesse and Tehinna, and from Tehinna the city of Naas; these are the men of Recha …. 13 Cenez was father of Othoniel and Saraia, Othoniel of Hathath and Maonathi, 14 and Maonathi of Ophra. Saraia’s son was Joab, founder of the Valley of the Smiths, where all the folk were craftsmen …. 15 Caleb, son of Jephone, had sons called Hir, Ela and Naham; from Ela came Cenez … 16 and from Jalaleel Ziph, Zipha, Thiria and Asrael …. 17 The sons of Ezra were Jether, Mered, Epher and Jalon; and Mered[1] begot Mariam, and Sammai, and Jesba, father of Esthamo; 18 his Jewish wife bore him Jared, father of Gedor, and Heber, father of Socho, and Icuthiel, father of Zanoe, but these others were his children by Bethia, daughter of Pharao, whom Mered took to wife …. 19 (And the sons of the wife of Odaias, that was sister to Naham, father of Garmite Ceila and Machathite Esthamo) …. 20 The sons of Simon were called Amnon, Rinna, Ben-Hanan and Thilon; and Jesi’s were called Zoheth and Ben-Zoheth.

Filii quoque Ela: Cenez. 16 Filii quoque Jaleleel: Ziph, et Zipha, Thiria, et Asraël. 17 Et filii Ezra, Jether, et Mered, et Epher, et Jalon, genuitque Mariam, et Sammai, et Jesba patrem Esthamo. 18 Uxor quoque ejus Judaia, peperit Jared patrem Gedor, et Heber patrem Socho, et Icuthiel patrem Zanoë: hi autem filii Bethiæ filiæ Pharaonis, quam accepit Mered. 19 Et filii uxoris Odaiæ sororis Naham patris Ceila, Garmi, et Esthamo, qui fuit de Machathi. 20 Filii quoque Simon, Amnon, et Rinna filius Hanan, et Thilon. Et filii Jesi, Zoheth, et Benzoheth.

21 υἱοὶ Σηλωμ υἱοῦ Ιουδα Ηρ πατὴρ Ληχα καὶ Λααδα πατὴρ Μαρησα καὶ γενέσεις οἰκιῶν εφραθ αβακ τῷ οἴκῳ Εσοβα 22 καὶ Ιωακιμ καὶ ἄνδρες Χωζηβα καὶ Ιωας καὶ Σαραφ οἳ κατῴκησαν ἐν Μωαβ καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν αὐτοὺς αβεδηριν αθουκιιν 23 οὗτοι κεραμεῖς οἱ κατοικοῦντες ἐν Ναταϊμ καὶ Γαδηρα μετὰ τοῦ βασιλέως ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ αὐτοῦ ἐνίσχυσαν καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐκεῖ

21 Juda’s son Sela begot Her, father of Lecha, and Laada, father of Maresa; from them, too, come the weaver-folk of Asbea 22 and Jokim, and the men of Choseba, and Joas and Saraph, lords once of Moab; the men, too, of Jasubi-lehem. But that was in bygone days; 23 now they are potters, living about Netaim and Gedera to do the king’s work for him; that is why they are left there.

21 Filii Sela, filii Juda: Her pater Lecha, et Laada pater Maresa, et cognationes domus operantium byssum in domo juramenti. 22 Et qui stare fecit solem, virique Mendacii, et Securus, et Incendens, qui principes fuerunt in Moab, et qui reversi sunt in Lahem: hæc autem verba vetera. 23 Hi sunt figuli habitantes in plantationibus et in sepibus, apud regem in operibus ejus: commoratique sunt ibi.

24 υἱοὶ Συμεων Ναμουηλ καὶ Ιαμιν Ιαριβ Ζαρε Σαουλ 25 Σαλεμ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Μαβασαμ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Μασμα υἱὸς αὐτοῦ 26 Αμουηλ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Σαβουδ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Ζακχουρ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Σεμεϊ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ 27 καὶ τῷ Σεμεϊ υἱοὶ ἑκκαίδεκα καὶ θυγατέρες τρεῖς καὶ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτῶν οὐκ ἦσαν υἱοὶ πολλοί καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ πατριαὶ αὐτῶν οὐκ ἐπλεόνασαν ὡς υἱοὶ Ιουδα 28 καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐν Βηρσαβεε καὶ Σαμα καὶ Μωλαδα καὶ Εσηρσουαλ 29 καὶ ἐν Βαλαα καὶ Βοασομ καὶ Θουλαδ 30 καὶ Βαθουηλ καὶ Ερμα καὶ Σεκλαγ 31 καὶ Βαιθμαρχαβωθ καὶ ἥμισυ Σωσιμ καὶ οἶκον Βαρουμσεωριμ αὗται πόλεις αὐτῶν ἕως βασιλέως Δαυιδ 32 καὶ ἐπαύλεις αὐτῶν Αιταμ καὶ Ηνρεμμων καὶ Θοκκαν καὶ Αισαν πόλεις πέντε 33 καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ ἐπαύλεις αὐτῶν κύκλῳ τῶν πόλεων τούτων ἕως Βααλ αὕτη ἡ κατάσχεσις αὐτῶν καὶ ὁ καταλοχισμὸς αὐτῶν

24 And now for the sons of Simeon; these were Namuel, Jamin, Jarib, Zara, Saul; 25 from him came Sellum, Mapsa and Masma; 26 Masma that was father of Hamuel, Zachur and Semei. 27 This Semei had sixteen sons and six daughters, but his brothers had not many children, and the whole clan could not rival the sons of Juda for numbers. 28 They dwelt in Bersabee, Molada, Hasarsuhal, 29 Bala, Asom, Tholad, 30 Bathuel, Horma, Siceleg, 31 Bethmarchaboth, Hasarsusim, Bethberai and Saarim; and these were the cities up to king David’s time. 32 They had villages, too, the five townships of Etam, Aën, Remmon, Thochen and Asan, 33 and other villages too round about their cities right up to Baal. So they dwelt, so their homes were distributed.

24 Filii Simeon: Namuel et Jamin, Jarib, Zara, Saul. 25 Sellum filius ejus, Mapsam filius ejus, Masma filius ejus. 26 Filii Masma: Hamuel filius ejus, Zachur filius ejus, Semei filius ejus. 27 Filii Semei sedecim, et filiæ sex: fratres autem ejus non habuerunt filios multos, et universa cognatio non potuit adæquare summam filiorum Juda. 28 Habitaverunt autem in Bersabee, et Molada, et Hasarsuhal, 29 et in Bala, et in Asom, et in Tholad, 30 et in Bathuel, et in Horma, et in Siceleg, 31 et in Bethmarchaboth, et in Hasarsusim, et in Bethberai, et in Saarim: hæ civitates eorum usque ad regem David. 32 Villæ quoque eorum: Etam, et Aën, Remmon, et Thochen, et Asan, civitates quinque. 33 Et universi viculi eorum per circuitum civitatum istarum usque ad Baal: hæc est habitatio eorum, et sedium distributio.

34 καὶ Μοσωβαβ καὶ Ιεμολοχ καὶ Ιωσια υἱὸς Αμασια 35 καὶ Ιωηλ καὶ οὗτος υἱὸς Ισαβια υἱὸς Σαραια υἱὸς Ασιηλ 36 καὶ Ελιωηναι καὶ Ιακαβα καὶ Ιασουια καὶ Ασαια καὶ Εδιηλ καὶ Ισμαηλ καὶ Βαναια 37 καὶ Ζουζα υἱὸς Σεφεϊ υἱοῦ Αλλων υἱοῦ Ιεδια υἱοῦ Σαμαρι υἱοῦ Σαμαιου 38 οὗτοι οἱ διελθόντες ἐν ὀνόμασιν ἀρχόντων ἐν ταῖς γενέσεσιν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐν οἴκοις πατριῶν αὐτῶν ἐπληθύνθησαν εἰς πλῆθος 39 καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν Γεραρα ἕως τῶν ἀνατολῶν τῆς Γαι τοῦ ζητῆσαι νομὰς τοῖς κτήνεσιν αὐτῶν 40 καὶ εὗρον νομὰς πίονας καὶ ἀγαθάς καὶ ἡ γῆ πλατεῖα ἐναντίον αὐτῶν καὶ εἰρήνη καὶ ἡσυχία ὅτι ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Χαμ τῶν κατοικούντων ἐκεῖ ἔμπροσθεν 41 καὶ ἤλθοσαν οὗτοι οἱ γεγραμμένοι ἐ{P'} ὀνόματος ἐν ἡμέραις Εζεκιου βασιλέως Ιουδα καὶ ἐπάταξαν τοὺς οἴκους αὐτῶν καὶ τοὺς Μιναίους οὓς εὕροσαν ἐκεῖ καὶ ἀνεθεμάτισαν αὐτοὺς ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης καὶ ᾤκησαν ἀν{T'} αὐτῶν ὅτι νομαὶ τοῖς κτήνεσιν αὐτῶν ἐκεῖ 42 καὶ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Συμεων ἐπορεύθησαν εἰς ὄρος Σηιρ ἄνδρες πεντακόσιοι καὶ Φαλεττια καὶ Νωαδια καὶ Ραφαια καὶ Οζιηλ υἱοὶ Ιεσι ἄρχοντες αὐτῶν 43 καὶ ἐπάταξαν τοὺς καταλοίπους τοὺς καταλειφθέντας τοῦ Αμαληκ καὶ κατῴκησαν ἐκεῖ ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ταύτης

34 For chiefs, they had Mosobab, Jemlech, Josa son of Amasias, 35 Joel, Jehu son of Josabias, the sons of Saraia, the sons of Asiel, 36 Elioenai, Jacoba, Isuhaia, Asaia, Adiel, Ismiel, Banaia, 37 Ziza son of Sephei, son of Allon, son of Idaia, son of Semri, son of Samaia; 38 all these named were chieftains of their clans. And now, their households growing more numerous, 39 they went further afield till they reached Gador, on the eastern side of the valley, in quest of a feeding-ground for their flocks. 40 Pasture they found, rich and nourishing; and all that wide, fruitful land was free from alarms, long inhabited by descendants of Cham. 41 Hither they came, the chieftains named above, in the days of Ezechias king of Juda; smote tents and tent-dwellers there, so that to-day none of them are left, and occupied those fair pasture-lands instead. 42 It was men of Simeon, too, five hundred strong, that invaded the hill-country of Seir, under Jesi’s sons, Phaltias, Naarias, Raphaia and Oziel; 43 defeated the Amalecites who had taken refuge there, and occupy their land to this day.[2]

34 Mosobab quoque et Jemlech, et Josa filius Amasiæ, 35 et Joël, et Jehu filius Josabiæ filii Saraiæ filii Asiel, 36 et Elioënai, et Jacoba, et Isuhaia, et Asaia, et Adiel, et Ismiel, et Banaia, 37 Ziza quoque filius Sephei filii Allon filii Idaia filii Semri filii Samaia. 38 Isti sunt nominati principes in cognationibus suis, et in domo affinitatum suarum multiplicati sunt vehementer. 39 Et profecti sunt ut ingrederentur in Gador usque ad orientem vallis, et ut quærerent pascua gregibus suis. 40 Inveneruntque pascuas uberes, et valde bonas, et terram latissimam et quietam et fertilem, in qua ante habitaverant de stirpe Cham. 41 Hi ergo venerunt, quos supra descripsimus nominatim, in diebus Ezechiæ regis Juda: et percusserunt tabernacula eorum, et habitatores qui inventi fuerant ibi, et deleverunt eos usque in præsentem diem: habitaveruntque pro eis, quoniam uberrimas pascuas ibidem repererunt. 42 De filiis quoque Simeon abierunt in montem Seir viri quingenti, habentes principes Phalthiam et Naariam et Raphaiam et Oziel filios Jesi: 43 et percusserunt reliquias, quæ evadere potuerant, Amalecitarum, et habitaverunt ibi pro eis usque ad diem hanc.

[1] The name Mered is not expressed in the original, but it seems clear from the following verse that this is intended.

[2] The notices throughout this chapter here seem disconnected, as if they were fragments of an older document, put together on some principle which is now hard to discover. Some of the proper names here given are rendered by the Latin version as if they were common nouns.
