1 καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ οἰκίας ἐν πόλει Δαυιδ καὶ ἡτοίμασεν τὸν τόπον τῇ κιβωτῷ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ ἐποίησεν αὐτῇ σκηνήν 2 τότε εἶπεν Δαυιδ οὐκ ἔστιν ἆραι τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ἀλ{L'} ἢ τοὺς Λευίτας ὅτι αὐτοὺς ἐξελέξατο κύριος αἴρειν τὴν κιβωτὸν κυρίου καὶ λειτουργεῖν αὐτῷ ἕως αἰῶνος 3 καὶ ἐξεκκλησίασεν Δαυιδ τὸν πάντα Ισραηλ εἰς Ιερουσαλημ τοῦ ἀνενέγκαι τὴν κιβωτὸν κυρίου εἰς τὸν τόπον ὃν ἡτοίμασεν αὐτῇ 4 καὶ συνήγαγεν Δαυιδ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ααρων καὶ τοὺς Λευίτας 5 τῶν υἱῶν Κααθ Ουριηλ ὁ ἄρχων καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι 6 τῶν υἱῶν Μεραρι Ασαια ὁ ἄρχων καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ διακόσιοι πεντήκοντα 7 τῶν υἱῶν Γηρσαμ Ιωηλ ὁ ἄρχων καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἑκατὸν πεντήκοντα 8 τῶν υἱῶν Ελισαφαν Σαμαιας ὁ ἄρχων καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ διακόσιοι 9 τῶν υἱῶν Χεβρων Ελιηλ ὁ ἄρχων καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ὀγδοήκοντα 10 τῶν υἱῶν Οζιηλ Αμιναδαβ ὁ ἄρχων καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἑκατὸν δέκα δύο 11 καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Δαυιδ τὸν Σαδωκ καὶ Αβιαθαρ τοὺς ἱερεῖς καὶ τοὺς Λευίτας τὸν Ουριηλ Ασαια Ιωηλ Σαμαιαν Ελιηλ Αμιναδαβ 12 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς ἄρχοντες πατριῶν τῶν Λευιτῶν ἁγνίσθητε ὑμεῖς καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ὑμῶν καὶ ἀνοίσετε τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ θεοῦ Ισραηλ οὗ ἡτοίμασα αὐτῇ 13 ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ πρότερον ὑμᾶς εἶναι διέκοψεν ὁ θεὸς ἡμῶν ἐν ἡμῖν ὅτι οὐκ ἐζητήσαμεν ἐν κρίματι

1 When he put up buildings in the Keep of David, he was careful to leave a plot of ground for God’s ark, and pitch a tent for it there. 2 He thought to himself, too, God’s ark must not be carried this way and that by the first comer; the Levites, whom the Lord has chosen out to be his servants for all time, have the duty of carrying it. 3 So now, summoning all Israel to Jerusalem, for the removal of the ark to the site he had prepared for it, 4 he summoned among the rest Aaron’s descendants, and the Levites. 5 There were a hundred and twenty Caathites, under Uriel, 6 two hundred and twenty Merarites, under Asaia, 7 a hundred and thirty Gersonites, under Joel, 8 two hundred of Elisaphan’s clan, under Semeias, 9 eighty of Hebron’s, under Eliel, 10 and a hundred and twelve of Oziel’s, under Aminadab. 11 These six David sent for, with the chief priests, Sadoc and Abiathar; 12 You, he said, are the chiefs of the Levite clans; look well to it that you and your brethren are purified of all defilement before you bring the ark of the Lord God of Israel to the site prepared for it. 13 Earlier, when you were not there, we brought on ourselves the Lord’s chastisement; there must be no such happening now, for want of due order taken.

1 Fecit quoque sibi domos in civitate David: et ædificavit locum arcæ Dei, tetenditque ei tabernaculum. 2 Tunc dixit David: Illicitum est ut a quocumque portetur arca Dei nisi a Levitis, quos elegit Dominus ad portandum eam, et ad ministrandum sibi usque in æternum. 3 Congregavitque universum Israël in Jerusalem, ut afferretur arca Dei in locum suum, quem præparaverat ei: 4 necnon et filios Aaron, et Levitas. 5 De filiis Caath, Uriel princeps fuit, et fratres ejus centum viginti. 6 De filiis Merari, Asaia princeps: et fratres ejus ducenti viginti. 7 De filiis Gersom, Joël princeps: et fratres ejus centum triginta. 8 De filiis Elisaphan, Semeias princeps: et fratres ejus ducenti. 9 De filiis Hebron, Eliel princeps: et fratres ejus octoginta. 10 De filiis Oziel, Aminadab princeps: et fratres ejus centum duodecim. 11 Vocavitque David Sadoc et Abiathar sacerdotes, et Levitas, Uriel, Asaiam, Joël, Semeiam, Eliel, et Aminadab: 12 et dixit ad eos: Vos, qui estis principes familiarum Leviticarum, sanctificamini cum fratribus vestris, et afferte arcam Domini Dei Israël ad locum qui ei præparatus est: 13 ne ut a principio, quia non eratis præsentes, percussit nos Dominus; sic et nunc fiat, illicitum quid nobis agentibus.

14 καὶ ἡγνίσθησαν οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ οἱ Λευῖται τοῦ ἀνενέγκαι τὴν κιβωτὸν θεοῦ Ισραηλ 15 καὶ ἔλαβον οἱ υἱοὶ τῶν Λευιτῶν τὴν κιβωτὸν τοῦ θεοῦ ὡς ἐνετείλατο Μωυσῆς ἐν λόγῳ θεοῦ κατὰ τὴν γραφήν ἐν ἀναφορεῦσιν ἐ{P'} αὐτούς 16 καὶ εἶπεν Δαυιδ τοῖς ἄρχουσιν τῶν Λευιτῶν στήσατε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτῶν τοὺς ψαλτῳδοὺς ἐν ὀργάνοις ᾠδῶν νάβλαις καὶ κινύραις καὶ κυμβάλοις τοῦ φωνῆσαι εἰς ὕψος ἐν φωνῇ εὐφροσύνης 17 καὶ ἔστησαν οἱ Λευῖται τὸν Αιμαν υἱὸν Ιωηλ ἐκ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ Ασαφ υἱὸς Βαραχια καὶ ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Μεραρι ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ Αιθαν υἱὸς Κισαιου 18 καὶ με{T'} αὐτῶν ἀδελφοὶ αὐτῶν οἱ δεύτεροι Ζαχαριας καὶ Οζιηλ καὶ Σεμιραμωθ καὶ Ιιηλ καὶ Ωνι καὶ Ελιαβ καὶ Βαναια καὶ Μαασαια καὶ Ματταθια καὶ Ελιφαλια καὶ Μακενια καὶ Αβδεδομ καὶ Ιιηλ καὶ Οζιας οἱ πυλωροί 19 καὶ οἱ ψαλτῳδοί Αιμαν Ασαφ καὶ Αιθαν ἐν κυμβάλοις χαλκοῖς τοῦ ἀκουσθῆναι ποιῆσαι 20 Ζαχαριας καὶ Οζιηλ Σεμιραμωθ Ιιηλ Ωνι Ελιαβ Μασαιας Βαναιας ἐν νάβλαις ἐπὶ αλαιμωθ 21 καὶ Ματταθιας καὶ Ελιφαλιας καὶ Μακενιας καὶ Αβδεδομ καὶ Ιιηλ καὶ Οζιας ἐν κινύραις αμασενιθ τοῦ ἐνισχῦσαι 22 καὶ Χωνενια ἄρχων τῶν Λευιτῶν ἄρχων τῶν ᾠδῶν ὅτι συνετὸς ἦν 23 καὶ Βαραχια καὶ Ηλκανα πυλωροὶ τῆς κιβωτοῦ 24 καὶ Σοβνια καὶ Ιωσαφατ καὶ Ναθαναηλ καὶ Αμασαι καὶ Ζαχαρια καὶ Βαναι καὶ Ελιεζερ οἱ ἱερεῖς σαλπίζοντες ταῖς σάλπιγξιν ἔμπροσθεν τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Αβδεδομ καὶ Ιια πυλωροὶ τῆς κιβωτοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ

14 So priest and Levite cleansed themselves for carrying the ark of the Lord God of Israel; 15 and the ark was carried by Levites, with poles resting on their shoulders, as Moses, speaking in the Lord’s name, had enjoined. 16 Then David would have the Levite chiefs appoint some of their brethren to be singers, chanting there with instruments of music, zither and harp and cymbals, till heaven rang with the echoes of their rejoicing. 17 So they appointed two Gersonites, Joel’s son Heman and Asaph son of Barachias, and Ethan, son of Casias, of the clan of Merari, 18 with others of lesser degree, their fellow clansmen, Zacharias, Ben, Jaziel, Semiramoth, Jahiel, Ani, Eliab, Banaias, Maasias, Mathathias, Eliphalu, Macenias, Obededom and Jehiel, that all held the office of door-keeper. 19 Of these singers, Heman, Asaph and Ethan beat cymbals together, 20 Zacharias, Oziel, Semiramoth, Jahiel, Ani, Eliab, Maasias and Banaias played, on their zithers, the Alamoth,[1] 21 while Mathathias, Eliphalu, Macenias, Obededom, Jehiel and Ozaziu led the triumph-song, Seminith-fashion,[2] with the harps they bore. 22 And Chonenias, chief of the Levites, was burden-master,[3] a burden-master chosen for his excellent skill. 23 The doors of the ark were guarded by Barachias and Elcana; 24 and there were seven priests, Sebenias, Josaphat, Nathanael, Amasai, Zacharias, Banaias and Eliezer, that blew trumpets before it. (And the doors of the ark were guarded by Obededom and Jehias.[4])

14 Sanctificati sunt ergo sacerdotes et Levitæ ut portarent arcam Domini Dei Israël. 15 Et tulerunt filii Levi arcam Dei, sicut præceperat Moyses juxta verbum Domini, humeris suis in vectibus. 16 Dixitque David principibus Levitarum, ut constituerent de fratribus suis cantores in organis musicorum, nablis videlicet, et lyris, et cymbalis, ut resonaret in excelsis sonitus lætitiæ. 17 Constitueruntque Levitas: Heman filium Joël, et de fratribus ejus Asaph filium Barachiæ: de filiis vero Merari, fratribus eorum: Ethan filium Casaiæ. 18 Et cum eis fratres eorum: in secundo ordine, Zachariam, et Ben, et Jaziel, et Semiramoth, et Jahiel, et Ani, Eliab, et Banaiam, et Maasiam, et Mathathiam, et Eliphalu, et Maceniam, et Obededom, et Jehiel, janitores. 19 Porro cantores, Heman, Asaph, et Ethan, in cymbalis æneis concrepantes. 20 Zacharias autem, et Oziel, et Semiramoth, et Jahiel, et Ani, et Eliab, et Maasias, et Banaias in nablis arcana cantabant. 21 Porro Mathathias, et Eliphalu, et Macenias, et Obededom, et Jehiel, et Ozaziu, in citharis pro octava canebant epinicion. 22 Chonenias autem princeps Levitarum, prophetiæ præerat, ad præcinendam melodiam: erat quippe valde sapiens. 23 Et Barachias, et Elcana, janitores arcæ. 24 Porro Sebenias, et Josaphat, et Nathanaël, et Amasai, et Zacharias, et Banaias, et Eliezer sacerdotes, clangebant tubis coram arca Dei: et Obededom et Jehias erant janitores arcæ.

25 καὶ ἦν Δαυιδ καὶ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι Ισραηλ καὶ οἱ χιλίαρχοι οἱ πορευόμενοι τοῦ ἀναγαγεῖν τὴν κιβωτὸν τῆς διαθήκης κυρίου ἐξ οἴκου Αβδεδομ ἐν εὐφροσύνῃ 26 καὶ ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ κατισχῦσαι τὸν θεὸν τοὺς Λευίτας αἴροντας τὴν κιβωτὸν τῆς διαθήκης κυρίου καὶ ἔθυσαν ἑπτὰ μόσχους καὶ ἑπτὰ κριούς 27 καὶ Δαυιδ περιεζωσμένος ἐν στολῇ βυσσίνῃ καὶ πάντες οἱ Λευῖται αἴροντες τὴν κιβωτὸν διαθήκης κυρίου καὶ οἱ ψαλτῳδοὶ καὶ Χωνενιας ὁ ἄρχων τῶν ᾠδῶν τῶν ᾀδόντων καὶ ἐπὶ Δαυιδ στολὴ βυσσίνη 28 καὶ πᾶς Ισραηλ ἀνάγοντες τὴν κιβωτὸν διαθήκης κυρίου ἐν σημασίᾳ καὶ ἐν φωνῇ σωφερ καὶ ἐν σάλπιγξιν καὶ ἐν κυμβάλοις ἀναφωνοῦντες νάβλαις καὶ ἐν κινύραις 29 καὶ ἐγένετο κιβωτὸς διαθήκης κυρίου καὶ ἦλθεν ἕως πόλεως Δαυιδ καὶ Μελχολ θυγάτηρ Σαουλ παρέκυψεν διὰ τῆς θυρίδος καὶ εἶδεν τὸν βασιλέα Δαυιδ ὀρχούμενον καὶ παίζοντα καὶ ἐξουδένωσεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτῆς

25 So with great rejoicing went David, and with him went all the elders of Israel and all his captains, to Obededom’s house, to fetch the ark that bears witness of the Lord’s covenant. 26 And as the Lord sped the Levites on their journey, with the ark for their load, seven bulls and seven rams were offered in sacrifice. 27 Like the Levites who carried the ark, the singers, and Chonenias that went as burden-master among the singers, David was clad in a robe of lawn; and he had a mantle of linen as well. 28 Thus all Israel brought the ark home, keeping high festival, to the sound of horn and trumpet and cymbals and zither and harp. 29 Only Michal, Saul’s daughter, watching from her window as the ark reached David’s Citadel, thought scorn of king David as she saw him dancing and making music there.[5]

25 Igitur David, et omnes majores natu Israël, et tribuni, ierunt ad deportandam arcam fœderis Domini de domo Obededom cum lætitia. 26 Cumque adjuvisset Deus Levitas qui portabant arcam fœderis Domini, immolabantur septem tauri, et septem arietes. 27 Porro David erat indutus stola byssina, et universi Levitæ qui portabant arcam, cantoresque, et Chonenias princeps prophetiæ inter cantores: David autem etiam indutus erat ephod lineo. 28 Universusque Israël deducebant arcam fœderis Domini in jubilo, et sonitu buccinæ, et tubis, et cymbalis, et nablis, et citharis concrepantes. 29 Cumque pervenisset arca fœderis Domini usque ad civitatem David, Michol filia Saul prospiciens per fenestram vidit regem David saltantem atque ludentem, et despexit eum in corde suo.
