| 1 προσθεὶς δὲ Ελιους ἔτι λέγει 2 μεῖνόν με μικρὸν ἔτι ἵνα διδάξω σε ἔτι γὰρ ἐν ἐμοί ἐστιν λέξις 3 ἀναλαβὼν τὴν ἐπιστήμην μου μακρὰν ἔργοις δέ μου δίκαια ἐρῶ 4 ἐ{P'} ἀληθείας καὶ οὐκ ἄδικα ῥήματα ἀδίκως συνίεις 5 γίγνωσκε δὲ ὅτι ὁ κύριος οὐ μὴ ἀποποιήσηται τὸν ἄκακον δυνατὸς ἰσχύι καρδίας 6 ἀσεβῆ οὐ μὴ ζωοποιήσει καὶ κρίμα πτωχῶν δώσει 7 οὐκ ἀφελεῖ ἀπὸ δικαίου ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ καὶ μετὰ βασιλέων εἰς θρόνον καὶ καθιεῖ αὐτοὺς εἰς νεῖκος καὶ ὑψωθήσονται 8 καὶ εἰ πεπεδημένοι ἐν χειροπέδαις συσχεθήσονται ἐν σχοινίοις πενίας 9 καὶ ἀναγγελεῖ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἔργα αὐτῶν καὶ τὰ παραπτώματα αὐτῶν ὅτι ἰσχύσουσιν 10 ἀλλὰ τοῦ δικαίου εἰσακούσεται καὶ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐπιστραφήσονται ἐξ ἀδικίας 11 ἐὰν ἀκούσωσιν καὶ δουλεύσωσιν συντελέσουσιν τὰς ἡμέρας αὐτῶν ἐν ἀγαθοῖς καὶ τὰ ἔτη αὐτῶν ἐν εὐπρεπείαις 12 ἀσεβεῖς δὲ οὐ διασῴζει παρὰ τὸ μὴ βούλεσθαι εἰδέναι αὐτοὺς τὸν κύριον καὶ διότι νουθετούμενοι ἀνήκοοι ἦσαν 13 καὶ ὑποκριταὶ καρδίᾳ τάξουσιν θυμόν οὐ βοήσονται ὅτι ἔδησεν αὐτούς 14 ἀποθάνοι τοίνυν ἐν νεότητι ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτῶν ἡ δὲ ζωὴ αὐτῶν τιτρωσκομένη ὑπὸ ἀγγέλων 15 ἀν{Q'} ὧν ἔθλιψαν ἀσθενῆ καὶ ἀδύνατον κρίμα δὲ πραέων ἐκθήσει 16 καὶ προσέτι ἠπάτησέν σε ἐκ στόματος ἐχθροῦ ἄβυσσος κατάχυσις ὑποκάτω αὐτῆς καὶ κατέβη τράπεζά σου πλήρης πιότητος |
1 And still Eliu would have his say: 2 Bear with me a little while I declare my thought to thee; I have more to say yet on God’s behalf. 3 From a deep source I will draw my reasons, proving him, my Maker, to be just; 4 here is no delusive eloquence, the full truth shall be made known to thee. 5 He, the all-powerful, does not grudge men power; 6 it is only to the wicked he denies his aid; the friendless shall have redress. 7 Never from the just is his favour withdrawn; a royal throne is theirs for ever, so high he exalts them. 8 If he should leave them in chains, caught in the toils of sore need, 9 it is but to apprise them of their own ill deeds, their own tyrannous deeds; 10 he will speak home to them for their correction, warn them to turn back from their guilty ways. 11 Hear they and heed, they shall live long in ease and renown; 12 if hear they will not, it is the sword’s point for them, to their last gasp fools still. 13 It is the cunning, the false-hearted, that are God’s sworn enemies; from them no cry comes when the chains close about them; 14 the storm sweeps them away, forgotten in death as the temple minions are forgotten;[1] 15 it is the friendless he rescues in their need, speaks home to them through the afflictions they endure. 16 From the pit’s mouth, where the ground seems lost under thy feet, he will bring thee out into full freedom; thou shalt take thy ease at a table loaded with dainties. |
1 Addens quoque Eliu, hæc locutus est: 2
Sustine me paululum, et indicabo tibi:
adhuc enim habeo quod pro Deo loquar. 3
Repetam scientiam meam a principio,
et operatorem meum probabo justum. 4
Vere enim absque mendacio sermones mei,
et perfecta scientia probabitur tibi. 5
Deus potentes non abjicit,
cum et ipse sit potens: 6
sed non salvat impios,
et judicium pauperibus tribuit. 7
Non auferet a justo oculos suos:
et reges in solio collocat in perpetuum,
et illi eriguntur. 8
Et si fuerint in catenis,
et vinciantur funibus paupertatis, 9
indicabit eis opera eorum,
et scelera eorum, quia violenti fuerunt. 10
Revelabit quoque aurem eorum, ut corripiat:
et loquetur, ut revertantur ab iniquitate. 11
Si audierint et observaverint, complebunt dies suos in bono,
et annos suos in gloria: 12
si autem non audierint,
transibunt per gladium,
et consumentur in stultitia. 13
Simulatores et callidi provocant iram Dei,
neque clamabunt cum vincti fuerint. 14
Morietur in tempestate anima eorum,
et vita eorum inter effeminatos. 15
Eripiet de angustia sua pauperem,
et revelabit in tribulatione aurem ejus. 16
Igitur salvabit te de ore angusto latissime,
et non habente fundamentum subter se:
requies autem mensæ tuæ erit plena pinguedine. |
