| 14 αὕτη ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτῶν σκάνδαλον αὐτοῖς καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐν τῷ στόματι αὐτῶν εὐδοκήσουσιν διάψαλμα 15 ὡς πρόβατα ἐν ᾅδῃ ἔθεντο θάνατος ποιμαίνει αὐτούς καὶ κατακυριεύσουσιν αὐτῶν οἱ εὐθεῖς τὸ πρωί καὶ ἡ βοήθεια αὐτῶν παλαιωθήσεται ἐν τῷ ᾅδῃ ἐκ τῆς δόξης αὐτῶν 16 πλὴν ὁ θεὸς λυτρώσεται τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐκ χειρὸς ᾅδου ὅταν λαμβάνῃ με διάψαλμα 17 μὴ φοβοῦ ὅταν πλουτήσῃ ἄνθρωπος καὶ ὅταν πληθυνθῇ ἡ δόξα τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ 18 ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ ἀποθνῄσκειν αὐτὸν λήμψεται τὰ πάντα οὐδὲ συγκαταβήσεται αὐτῷ ἡ δόξα αὐτοῦ 19 ὅτι ἡ ψυχὴ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ζωῇ αὐτοῦ εὐλογηθήσεται ἐξομολογήσεταί σοι ὅταν ἀγαθύνῃς αὐτῷ 20 εἰσελεύσεται ἕως γενεᾶς πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἕως αἰῶνος οὐκ ὄψεται φῶς 21 ἄνθρωπος ἐν τιμῇ ὢν οὐ συνῆκεν παρασυνεβλήθη τοῖς κτήνεσιν τοῖς ἀνοήτοις καὶ ὡμοιώθη αὐτοῖς |
14 Fatal path, that ensnares the reckless! Pitiful end of the men that love life! 15 There they lie in the world beneath, huddled like sheep, with death for their shepherd, the just for their masters; soon, soon their image fades, the grave for its tenement. 16 But my life God will rescue from the power of that lower darkness, a life that finds acceptance with him. 17 Do not be disturbed, then, when a man grows rich, and there is no end to his household’s magnificence; 18 he cannot take all that with him when he dies, magnificence will not follow him to the grave. 19 While life lasts, he calls himself happy: None but will envy my success; 20 but soon he will be made one with the line of his fathers, never again to see the light. 21 Short is man’s careless enjoyment of earthly goods; match him with the brute beasts, and he is no better than they. |

Hæc via illorum scandalum ipsis;
et postea in ore suo complacebunt. 15
Sicut oves in inferno positi sunt:
mors depascet eos.
Et dominabuntur eorum justi in matutino;
et auxilium eorum veterascet in inferno a gloria eorum. 16
Verumtamen Deus redimet animam meam de manu inferi,
cum acceperit me. 17
Ne timueris cum dives factus fuerit homo,
et cum multiplicata fuerit gloria domus ejus: 18
quoniam, cum interierit, non sumet omnia,
neque descendet cum eo gloria ejus. 19
Quia anima ejus in vita ipsius benedicetur;
confitebitur tibi cum benefeceris ei. 20
Introibit usque in progenies patrum suorum;
et usque in æternum non videbit lumen. 21
Homo, cum in honore esset, non intellexit.
